Asking for help and advice

Hello:

We just finished the draft for Invasive Species in US article. Here is our sandbox. Could you give us some suggestions?Thanks

--TiMkOk (talk) 18:58, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Looks really great! Most of the comments I would have made others have mentioned. Mostly, tighten up the section headings and format the references. Other than that, you've got a great, comprehensive article. PrincessofLlyr royal court 02:10, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your advice. We will put the article on Wiki soon. --TiMkOk (talk) 03:28, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I'm here again to bother you (again and again... sorry). Things seem to go much better at MOTD, right now. THANK YOU!!!
The reason why I'm writing you is the following: next Sunday (8th of May) is Mother's Day. I know that it is celebrated on different days around the world, but I'd love if we could (and are able to) make our "very-little" contribution in honour of all the mothers in the world. For the upcoming 8th of May (Sunday) there is already a motto in schedule, but I think that we can move the motto approved for that day to another date and to put one about mothers in place of it. Here is my nomination.
Thank you in advance and all the best! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 12:49, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

MOTD Barnstar for helping to keep our project "alive"

The MOTD Barnstar
I award the MOTD Barnstar to PrincessofLlyr for helping to keep our project "alive" during this difficult time. Without you and your so precious help and contributions, we all probably would have seen the end of this project. A BIG THANK YOU!!! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 19:45, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

A brief note, please, read it carefully, especially the last part in bold: The last time we (our project) gave awards to our (its) members on last Summer, then the number of new nominations and reviews of the existing nominations has been diminishing. The end result was the "April crisis" with no mottos for about an entire week. On the contrary, I hope this award will help to maintain our level high or, at least, appropriate to its needs, the needs of our project. I think that around 10 minutes a week to "devote" to the project, when it is possible of course, should be more than enough to achieve the desired result.
Of course, I gave you this award personally, in a personal way and not in the name of the project. This is just a way to say a BIG thank you, so, refrain from returning the award to me or I would be overwhelmed by stars and banners and it is not my intention to "profit" on this, really! Please, do NOT return the award! And, there is no need to thank me, it was my pleasure.
Thanks again (I think I can speak for all the contributors to MOTD) and all the very best!!! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 19:45, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Please help assess articles for Public Policy Initiative research

Hi PrincessofLlyr/2011/May,

Your work as an Online Ambassador is making a big contribution to Wikipedia. Right now, we're trying to measure just how much student work improves the quality of Wikipedia. If you'd like contribute to this research and get a firsthand look at the quality improvement that is happening through the project, please sign up to assess articles. Assessment is happening now, just use the quantitative metric and start assessing! Your help would be hugely appreciated!

Thank you, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 17:13, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

XD

The Working Woman's Barnstar
Thank you for keeping a lot of crap off literature-related articles. Your watchful eye is essential in maintaining the project's content. Your consistent diligence does not go unnoticed. Airplaneman 02:32, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! It feels like that's all I ever do anymore...thanks for noticing. Also, very thoughtful of you to change the gender on the barnstar. This made my day! PrincessofLlyr royal court 19:25, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Adoption

I would live to talk to you about adoption iff its a convenient time for you and you don't lack capacity due to existing workload? MikeBeckett (talk) 19:46, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello Mike! My existing workload should soon drop with cessation of the student adoption program, and I have no long foreseeable absences in the near future, so I would be happy to adopt you. Do you have any immediate questions or concerns? PrincessofLlyr royal court 22:47, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Nothing pressing atm, I am delighted to accept your offer of adoption. Can you suggest a badge(?) or something (form of words) I can/should use to update my userpage? MikeBeckett (talk) 23:22, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, the tag {{Adoptee|PrincessofLlyr}} will display a userbox indicating the adoption. I will add a corresponding one to my page. You should also remove the seeking adoption userbox from your page to avoid confusion. Do you need any general instruction into editing, or are you mostly looking for answers to any questions that happen to occur? I'm comfortable with either method of mentoring, so whichever suits you best is fine with me. PrincessofLlyr royal court 01:15, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
userbox seeking adoption swapped with adoptee. May I make three requests (a) I would like feedback on the first page I created 'Reform Cat/ which has been deleted if you have time to review it. I would like to learn from my mistakes to make a better article next time I see something I think is missing from wiki and is imo (although mileage may vary) worthy of a Wikipedia page. (b) I have checked out several peoples userpage and adapted the page I have now any feedback on improving it would also be appreciated. (c) I have learnt a little about Wikipedia code by research and trial and error, do you know of a good crib sheet for Wikipedia code, for ease of reference.

Lastly for my terms of reference may I ask how would you prefer to be addressed PrincessofLlyr?, Princess Eilonwy? or if it is not too informal Princess?, Llyr?, Eilonwy? I do not wish to cause you offence, or to be too intimate or too distant, or to be too formal or too informal or for that matter to put at risk your right to anonymity. I am just asking what handle you wish to be used and wanting to ensure I use etiquette/ abbreviations you are comfortable with. MikeBeckett (talk) 22:21, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)From personal experience, I suggest Princess or PrincessofLlyr. I'll let her answer you directly though. (By the way, I'm one of Princess' friendly talkpage stalkers). Brambleclawx 00:58, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Hi BCx a pleasure to virtually meet you thank you for the heads up much appreciated! MikeBeckett (talk) 14:59, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
BCx is right, Princess is probably the most common adaptation, and likely the easiest. As for question (a), is there a copy of your reform cat article somewhere in your userspace? As deleted content, the article you created is not available to me. I'll do a little research as to notability of the topic and get back to you on that.
Hi Princess as requested User:MikeBeckett/Sandbox I have put the ' code for the page' below the code 'that went with the picture'. While I think I understand the notability arguments, I felt that it would be newsworthy that this unofficial campaign was more prominent virally than the Yes and No referendum campaigns combined (I included stats on the talk page now deleted) someone unknown editor deleted the delete page icons but then an admin deleted the page anyway, a decision I have not contested this, but am determined to learn from (hence getting adopted!).

(b), your userpage is most impressive for a new user. However, I would suggest that for the near future you focus on editing articles, as too much work on your userpage could lead some users to accuse you of myspacing. My own userpage was not fully designed until a year after I began editing.

*blush* why thank you (to your first clause). *blush* *shock* *horror* (to your next sentence) I have never had a myspace, I always felt a little too old... Editor it is then! btw oldschool emo-con used asterixs each side of an emotion to show not prose, this does not seem to work in Wikipedia due to formattign, is their another way to do this in talk pages?

(c), a couple of good pages might be the cheatsheet or the complete markup list. If that's not what you were looking for let me know.

In further regard to my username, it is very difficult to offend me and I normally adopt a fairly informal manner of interaction. Very little of this account directly relates to my real life identity, which would make it difficult for you to out me in any way. That is simply a personal choice I have made and I very much respect users like yourself who choose to use their real identities here. If you have any preferences in regard to address and/or formality, let me know and I will be happy to respect those.
Lastly, I should have warned you before, but I do have numerous talk page stalkers whom you may encounter. All of them are friendly and unfailingly helpful. They will normally allow me to answer your questions, unless they have particular expertise in the area or I have taken too long to answer. I completely welcome their assistance and hope you will find them helpful also. Long answer, but I hope it sufficiently addressed all of your questions (very good ones, by the way!). PrincessofLlyr royal court 03:55, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the links, will look at these in more depth before commenting further. I prefer Mike for those with whom I work and generally err towards informal but I like to check first . I respect your choice PrincessofLlyr,(and I don't plan on using Prin or POL as abbreviations!) . Happy to communicate with all stalker, with the caveat that if I detect malice I may politely challenge (that seems rather strong, what evidence do you have to back up such an assertion? or would you like to consider revising your position after further thought?) or revert a change I perceive to be less than friendly (page blanking), if this is not too much of a presumption on my part. I appreciate your engagement while I get wikinducted or whatever the correct terminology might be?

MikeBeckett (talk) 15:24, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

#include <iostream>
int main ( int argc,  char **argv ) {
    std::cout << "Hello PrincessofLlyr, yes the link is helpful for formatting!";
    return 0;
}

MikeBeckett (talk) 15:40, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Looks like you're learning fast! As you probably know already, your sandbox is a good place to practice markup as you're allowed to do anything you desire there. In reqards to asterisks, in Wiki-markup they represent bulleting, like so:
  • 1
  • 2, etc.
To get around that, you would use the tags <nowiki></nowiki> around the phrase, which would display as *blush*.
My tps (which does not have the same negative connotation as "stalker" in real life) should not ever give you trouble, but you are allowed to revert actions such as blanking or vandalism by any editor. Civil interaction is expected with all users on Wikipedia (WP:CIVIL), but polite disagreement is never discouraged. Oh, and the most common term in regards to a situation like this is "mentoring". Just remember that you are still a full member of the community and allowed, even encouraged, to edit on your own while still learning from me. I have discovered that trial and error is sometimes the best method of learning! PrincessofLlyr royal court 16:38, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Hi PrincessmentorofLlyr,

Been risking political edits and comments and a few random ones too.

At the risk of MyWikipacing, I have trial and error attempted to create this section on my userpage (Unable to do without interfering with real Wikipedia). Any guidance on this admitedly low priority vanity project would be appreciated, norush! {|class="wikitable" border="1" width="100%" |- |[[Special:Categories|Categories:]] [[:Category:1975 births|1975 births]] | [[Category:British people]] | [[Category:British people of English descent]] | [[:Category:Alumni_of_Goldsmiths,_University_of_London|Alumni of Goldsmiths, University of London]] | [[:Category:Living people|Living people]] | [[Category:British democracy activists]] | [[Category:English activists|Social]] | [[Category:Liberal Democrat (UK) politicians|Councillors]] | [[Category:Local political office-holders in the United Kingdom]] | [[Category:Councillors in Yorkshire and the Humber]] | [[Category:Local government in North Yorkshire|Councillors]] | [[Category:Members of the Institute of Directors]] |}

Yours Mentee-ly Mike with apologies for all errors and trials caused. MikeBeckett (talk) 23:09, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

I have experimented with a new signature, any feedback appreciated? User:MikeBeckett Please do say 'Hi!' 19:15, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mike! I have posted a corrected version of the categories table on your userpage. The main problem was that categories are designed not to show, but instead to appear at the bottom of the page. I fixed that by adding a colon (:) inside the first set of links. Your new sig is very nice. You obviously pick up code quite quickly! PrincessofLlyr royal court 19:57, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
You are a star! thank you PrincessofLlyr much appreciated! User:MikeBeckett Please do say 'Hi!' 20:43, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Help I have a problem on the bottom of my User page the last of the Category: Local government in North Yorkshire. This is a main Wikipedia Category which I should not be in how do i remove myself from this category? Thank in anticipation, Mike User:MikeBeckett Please do say 'Hi!' 22:50, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

It's from your list of categories higher up: when you type [[Category: example]] to a page, it places that page into the category (not what you were trying to do, I presume). What I think you were trying to do was create a link to the category page, in which case, add a colon in front of the word cateogry, example: [[:Category:example]]. Brambleclawx 02:14, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Cool tyvm User:MikeBeckett Please do say 'Hi!' 16:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador sweatshirt

Hi! This is the last call for signing on for a Wikipedia Ambassador hooded sweatshirt (in case you missed the earlier message in one of the program newsletters about it). If you would like one, please email me with your name, mailing address, and (US) sweatshirt size. We have a limited number left, so it will be first-come, first-served. (If more than one size would work for you, note that as well.)

Progress

I hope you are well. Just thought I would let you know that this week I received Reviewers, Rollbackers flags. I was thinking about emulating your userpage show hide panels, might reduce the Mywikispaceness if I did, just a thought. I am gaining experience and confidence thank you for your support User:MikeBeckett Please do say 'Hi!' 01:13, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

I am doing well, thank you. I have been watching your progress periodically and it looks as if you are doing well. I would suggest that you study the criteria for speedy deletion very carefully and always try to use the best one. When in doubt, use the prod or AfD reasonings. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, Twinkle is a good tool for patrol. Keep up the good work and let me know if you have any questions. PrincessofLlyr royal court 03:21, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

I have started using Twinkle and it is most useful thank you, so is AWB, although not yet used to Huggle all these things take time to master.

A question if it is not too personal, would you be interested in being nominated as an admin?

I have taken the liberty of nominating myself for the ambassador role, lets see what happens... User:MikeBeckett -> User talk:MikeBeckett Please say 'Hi' 16:30, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, the various tools do take time to master. As always, be careful of your actions with the tools. Automation is no excuse. No, I am not interested in becoming an administrator, although thank you for the offer. For one thing, I do not have the time, nor do I crave the stress it is likely to create. And secondly, I know that I would not currently pass, so running would be futile. But again, thanks for the offer. PrincessofLlyr royal court 18:35, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Annabeth Chase

Before you look at the talk page, tell me: what quality level do you think the article is currently at? Brambleclawx 21:33, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

C, easily. Not B, which would need much more significant sourcing, but definitely a C-class. PrincessofLlyr royal court 22:59, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
Which particular section(s) are you thinking of in terms of sourcing issues? Brambleclawx 14:27, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
A good deal of "Fictional Biography", some of which I should be able to help with, "Lost Hero", and the end of "In the Film". Those are the major ones. A more difficult task is a balance of in-world (in the books....) and real life perspective. The reception section is paltry compared to everything else. Random note: I was actually looking at the article when the new message sign popped up! PrincessofLlyr royal court 14:33, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Ok, well, still not having read the books, I still can't really help with Fictional Biography... Lost Hero, I ref'ed, and is there a third-party source that mentions annabeth's hair, or will we have to cite the film (which I watched in English class). Brambleclawx 00:25, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
Just wondering: is it really necessary to document her actions in each book, or can that be merged into Fictional Biography, along with her Physical Description, Romance, and Powers? Brambleclawx 00:54, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I lost track of answering this. There is very likely a third-party source for the thing about her hair, as I know it was a commonly noted difference among fans. As for you second question, I'm not really sure. That has been our style, to use the fic bio for general details about the character, and book-by-book descriptions for plot details. I personally think it works out fairly well, but you're welcome to change it, especially if other PJTF members agree. PrincessofLlyr royal court 03:34, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Just checked my watchlist - massive congrats on the GA for Moonrise!!! I had seen the comments just earlier today, so you fixed that fast! PrincessofLlyr royal court 03:37, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
That GA was possibly one of the most difficult I've ever done. Oh wait, That's because I've only nominated GAs 5 times. Oh well. I was just thinking about merging the stuff because of the extreme size of the in-universe stuff. If someone else ever brings it up, I may do something about it then. I'm still hoping to push Annabeth to B at some point. Brambleclawx 00:44, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
