FYI

Just a note, I added the little bit of CSS you wrote to widen the search box in vector as a Gadget. Mr.Z-man 01:02, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

That's great. Now when will this become the default? PleaseStand (talk) 01:14, 16 May 2010 (UTC) Just a note: The original code set the width to 15em (compare to the default 10em and the gadget 20em). The margin-top of 0.6em (vs. 0.5em) is to line up the search box better with the rest of the tab text.

User info

May I suggest for the user info scrip a change from "A user" to "A standard user" or something like that? kcylsnavS {screech} 01:27, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

A registered user — are you fine with that? PleaseStand (talk) 01:32, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
P.S.: but not show the word "registered" if the user is blocked? I don't like "a blocked registered user". PleaseStand (talk) 01:36, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh, yes, that would be cool. I'm just wanting some sort of nice adjective. You could even if{user=Svanslyck; "awesomely cool"; else registered} or some such. Just kidding. kcylsnavS {screech} 01:37, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
I have made the change as described for clarity. WP:BYPASS and you should see it. PleaseStand (talk) 01:59, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Please make sure User:Rd232 shows up as a "blocked administrator". I found a bug while making the change you suggested. PleaseStand (talk) 02:14, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Nope. He just shows up as an administrator. kcylsnavS {screech} 02:24, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Then WP:BYPASS and it should work. PleaseStand (talk) 02:25, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Yep - it's good. Glad to help. kcylsnavS {screech} 02:26, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

AfC

Hi, just thought you might want to check out User:Tim Song/afchelper4.js. It's a handy script for AfC reviewing, and notifies the page creator as well. Cheers, fetch·comms 20:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. It makes accepting articles much easier. PleaseStand (talk) 21:18, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

FFU

Regarding this, it does fall under fair use as the subject is now deceased. fetch·comms 22:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

The comment seemed to suggest that the requester holds the copyright. Is it acceptable for an uploader to upload his own image to Wikipedia, allowing others to use it only under "fair use"? PleaseStand (talk) 22:32, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
It doesn't matter who owns the copyright (that's because it's fair use--using copyrighted materials) as long as the use falls under the NFCC, which this image does. fetch·comms 22:40, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
So should I go ahead and upload the file then, even though I have already closed the request? PleaseStand (talk) 22:42, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Sure, just change the template when done or whatever. fetch·comms 22:45, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Submission re Veterans' Memorial Hall, Duluth, MN

Dear PleaseStand, you reviewed and denied this submission--would it be better if I followed up with you with my questions, or should I use live chat? (My comment/question: I did rewrite this myself, and added information from a few other sources. Was it just too close to what is on the website?) Thanks for your time. MtRainier7 17:55, 21 May 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MtRainier7 (talkcontribs) Sorry, I'm a newbie: I thought I'd signed this. Let me try again.66.173.73.72 (talk) 18:01, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Comparing your submission with About the Museum, it is obvious that the structure of your article matches theirs, just with parts deleted, which is evidence of plagiarism (link to Wikipedia policy). In many places, paraphrasing is too close to the original as well. ("At the turn of the 20th century, St. Louis County’s population was booming, and county leaders decided to build a courthouse that would be unrivalled in Minnesota." and "As the years progressed, the number of GAR members diminished." are two examples). All this with no quotation marks anywhere.
If you want to ask someone else about your submission, you should be able to find someone on live chat. I am not on there, but you can always leave a message for me on this page, and I will respond as soon as I can. PleaseStand (talk) 20:28, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for the clarification! That is exceedingly helpful.MtRainier7 03:59, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

The Web 2.0 Copywriting Article

Hi PleaseStand, thanks for your feedback about this article - I could really use some help with it, the topic is still so new but its getting bigger and bigger everyday which is why I thought there should be a wiki on it so that people know what it is. I've taken all the bits about Contrast Media out - but I've left the seo copy section in, I know it overlaps but it is a fundamental part of web 2.0 copywriting and I think to understand it properly people need to make the connection. Please let me know what else I can do to make this page go live! WordsforLife (talk) 08:20, 19 May 2010 (UTC) Wordsforlife

(For convenience, here is a link to the submission: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Web 2.0 Copywriting.)
Well, to start with, you should look at Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners and cite the sources you used within the text, just after you state the fact (this sentence is a deliberate example).[1] If you use the scheme they describe, be sure to add {{reflist}} to the bottom of the article.[1] If you can't figure it out, just number the sources you used and put the numbers where you want them (in brackets [1] or something like that), and I can fix it so that it works correctly. PleaseStand (talk) 03:13, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

All the sources were from articles and websites that wiki says I can't list? That's where I'm having the trouble. Most of the stuff I got off the Michael Fortin website and off Contrast Media's website. There are also a few blogs about it, but nothing that wiki would consider 'verifiable' info. Maybe I should wait until web 2.0 copywriting get bigger? WordsforLife (talk) 13:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC) WordsForLife

Your problem could be that "Web 2.0 copywriting" is really a buzzword invented by Contrast Media to market their services. Perhaps it would be best to add a section to social media marketing that elaborates on the challenges of writing marketing copy for Twitter, for example, if you can find this information. Do you believe that it is time for me to decline your submission because you have not been able to find sources? You can resubmit your article if you find them later, and if you think that "Web 2.0 copywriting" is something that people might type into our search box, I can redirect it to the article that already exists for you. PleaseStand (talk) 00:49, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Note: the submission was declined. PleaseStand (talk) 03:45, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi again, its okay that the article was declined I'll wait until the term gets bigger - but it certainly isn't only Contrast Media's buzzword thats for sure! There are tons of writers and companies using it either as 'web 2.0 copywriting' or Copywriting 2.0. Like I said before its a new term that has yet to grow, but it will! I'll resubmit the article when it does. Thanks for all of your help:) WordsforLife (talk) 10:48, 25 May 2010 (UTC) WordsForLife

Julius Chajes

Hi, I just tried to create an entry on Julius Chajes using the bio I had written & posted on my personal web page. You rightly noted that the text was identical to the text on my website! Must I rewrite it in order to submit it to Wikipedia? What if I delete it from my personal website before resubmitting? Thanks, Yosele11 (talk) 15:34, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Jeffrey

If you are related to the subject of the article, I advise you not to resubmit because that would be a conflict of interest. Comment highlighting link doesn't

Hey, I'm standing, but still have a problem anyway. :) I've got "Toggle comment highlighting" below "Special pages" in my toolbox submenu, but I cannot tab to it. When I mouse over it, it changes to underscored (it usually isn't) but the mouse cursor does not change to permit clickability. Thots? kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 00:27, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

OK, it should be fixed now. Also, it is now not in the toolbox; it is under the drop-down arrow on Vector and shown as a tab in Monobook (otherwise Vector's collapsing sidebar would make it hard to get to). PleaseStand (talk) 02:05, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, that's confusing. Any idea what I'm seeing? Viewing the webpage code doesn't reveal anything useful that I can see. Also, my advanced editing features have disappeared (cite extension, vector's features, and so on), so I'm no longer seeing any dropdowns. It looks just like monobook used to. Is there maybe some adverse effect being caused by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:PleaseStand/highlight-comments.js or my lack of proper implementation? Ctrl-Shift-R and the toolbox menu item is gone but the vector editing tools are still not there. Hmmm. kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 02:59, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
It doesn't have to do with my script; even with all scripts and gadgets turned off, the old edit toolbar still shows up on the Vector skin. Others are saying the same thing at WP:VPT. PleaseStand (talk) 03:16, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Um, what "dropdown arrow in Vector"? I'm still not seeing it. I have dropdowns for Advanced, Special Characters, Help and Cite. Am I missing one? kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 02:26, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
In Vector, there is a drop-down arrow next to the watch page star that contains functions including the move function. PleaseStand (talk) 04:03, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
I see now. I was not clear on what this did. I thought it highlighted comments in the edit box, but what it really does is highlight my comments, or messages or whatever, on talk pages. Maybe add something to the documentation based on my confusion. kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 12:54, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

After reading one of the Village Pump messages regarding server lag

Maybe automatic (edit=autoconfirmed, move=sysop) status should be applied to all pages whenever server lag is higher than 300 seconds. I'm already used to it from YouTube maintenance. Any full-protected pages could remain full protected. The last two spikes that I saw anyhow were under 200. mechamind90 18:02, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm not a MediaWiki dev or Wikipedia sysadmin, but I do know that 1000 s database lag is not an ordinary event. The most recent spike (at about 1000 s lag) probably happened as a result of a mistaken global oversighting of a long-time editor's 140,000+ edits and did not last for very long. Note that some of Wikipedia's bots are already coded to slow down or stop editing when lag exceeds 3–5 s. PleaseStand (talk) 19:40, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Map zooming

Hi. I know you are an expert on coding but how are you on template coding? See National Portrait Gallery (United States). You know on ebay when you are browsing items you can hover over a picture with the mouse to zoom in? Ideally what would be useful here is when you hover over the map it produces a zoomed larger version with the pin still on it to make out street names. Is this possible? Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:00, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

If you click on the globe icon next to "Coordinates" at the top of the page, you get the WikiMiniAtlas view but that does not include streets. You might be interested in the OpenStreetMap-Wikipedia collaboration, which aims to integrate free street maps with Wikipedia's articles. PleaseStand (talk) 19:57, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

LOL, yes I know about that, I have made nearly a hundred open street map locators of cities and province on here. Check out this. When you click the geo globe on German wiki now it features on the open street map at different zoomable levels. If we could import this technology this would be perfect.... Highlight by default

On the MediaWiki-l mailing list I asked

> User:PleaseStand/highlight-comments.js is a script on Wikipedia. One has to click
> a link on the page to activate it. Is there some way to make it activate on page load?

and received the reply

Replace the call to addPortletLink with HighlightCommentsJsHighlight()

The gentleman who suggested this is on the other side of the planet and won't be back till the sun comes 'round to his land again, but I'm impatient. Any idea how I might implement the suggestion? kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 22:19, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

This has been added, but for now this will not be the default setting. Update the monobook/vector.js code as described at User:PleaseStand/Comment highlighter to turn on highlighting as a default setting. PleaseStand (talk) 23:24, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
You are so cool. Thanks! kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 23:35, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Strange Problem with custom user pages

Hi. I've noticed this sort of thing happening on several user pages: http://tinypic.com/r/2re2iaw/6 . That example is from User:Selfworm. I think it's coming from css or js on their own pages. kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 03:59, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

That is because he is trying to CSS-position his heading over the real one. The Vector skin is different from Monobook, and therefore it does not look right. Turning off the user info script, you would still see the duplicate headings. PleaseStand (talk) 04:06, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
I figured it was something like that. Not gonna turn off your script though. I like it too much. :) kcylsnavS{screechharrass} 04:11, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Are you for real?

Can you convince me that your non-admin closure, after eight hours, of this evenly-split AfD discussion should not be taken to deletion review immediately? ╟─TreasuryTagvoice vote─╢ 08:33, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

  • I do not see a legitimate basis for your speedy keep of this article, and request that you reverse your action and reopen the AFD. The opinion was about evenly divided: the nominator (me) and 3 others for deleting, and an equal number for keeping. Otherwise it needs to go to deletion review. Why did you find it necessary to end the debate after a few hours, with no consensus and no "snowball?" You have merely set up the need for another AFD. Edison (talk) 15:27, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
  • The way I saw it was that there were no remaining arguments for deletion. Now, I do believe my closure was too early; I doubt the nominator had a chance to present another rationale for deletion. Sorry for wasting everyone's time. PleaseStand (talk) 16:00, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
    • I agree with TreasuryTag, Malcolm, and Edison. Please un-close this AfD so we can return to the same discussion. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 16:49, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
      • OK, I reverted myself. Sorry for the mistake. PleaseStand (talk) 17:00, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
        • Thanks for reopening the AFD. Your decision that "There were no remaining arguments" for deletion assumes that any stated reason was completely demolished by any argument to the contrary. But some asserting "anyone who was the target of a bomb" or "anyone who had an obituary in a major paper" has satisfied GNG are novel arguments not found in any guideline and not found in erthe compilation of AFD outcomes. It is not necessary for the nominaator or others to add novel reasons for deletion in addition to the initial argument that notability is lacking per our guidelines. Edison (talk) 16:17, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Question regarding freeze template

I thought I would be able to use your {{freeze}} template to save a version of the main page(to keep track of a DYK).

I recorded one on 10 May here. As I went to add a new one today, I checked the 10 May entry, and it displays today's main page.

Am I doing something wrong (or does it not work for the main page)?--SPhilbrickT 15:34, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

The main page's sections are transcluded templates, therefore that won't work. You have to use Template:Did you know as the page name instead. I have fixed the two links on your user page for you. PleaseStand (talk) 20:15, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks.--SPhilbrickT 00:05, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

john morrissey III

hi i was trying to add an article on my friend because i noticed that on the wiki page for american history x that he produced he is listed as a producer but he does not have his own page.i am working with him on couple of up coming movies so i know all that info on imdb is correct but there is no other source to use to verify that but the person himself so let me know what can i do to do an article on john morrissey. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bcd1234a2 (talkcontribs) 20:53, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Our WP:verifiability policy requires that the information in articles be attributable to reliable, published sources. You may also want to look at our WP:conflict of interest and WP:notability guidelines. Third-party sources generally are necessary to establish notability. PleaseStand (talk) 21:08, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

not that i wonna bother u but your response didn't help if anything confused me more.so how i am i suppose to do an article about john morrissey?u have wiki pages on all of the people that worked om american history x but him and he produced the movie.how the info about the other people was verified?i posted a link to his website where is a picture of him.tony k an d eduard norton.how u verify a producer of a movie?like i said i am not trying to be pain in the neck but may be u should write the article than.i would like to see where r u going to find verifiable info?i know the man.maybe i would give u his number and u can ask him? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bcd1234a2 (talkcontribs) 21:25, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

  • If he won an Academy Award or American History X has received multiple full-length reviews, he is likely notable enough for Wikipedia (per WP:CREATIVE).
    • However, WP:SELFPUB says that articles should not primarily be based on "self-published" sources.
  • Our conflict of interest guideline discourages writing about people who are close friends (see WP:COI#Close relationships).
  • We consider the argument that the subject should have a Wikipedia article just because the others have articles invalid (see WP:OSE).
  • You can go ahead and create the article without going through Articles for Creation (the "go live now" option), but it might be proposed for deletion. PleaseStand (talk) 23:36, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Veterans' Memorial Hall, round 2

Dear PleaseStand, I did rewrite the article and am ready to resubmit. Should I just send it to you here? Thanks for all of your help. MtRainier7 16:41, 3 June 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MtRainier7 (talkcontribs)

Oh, dear--I received your message, I did the shift/tilda combination (I thought). I'll try again. This just isn't that hard! MtRainier7 16:54, 3 June 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MtRainier7 (talkcontribs)

You can resubmit to Articles for Creation at any time, or you can save a userspace draft at User:MtRainier7/Veterans' Memorial Hall (click the link). Regardless of which location you save the article at, I can take a look at it. By the way, it is likely that the four tildes to sign your username are not working properly because you have the "Sign my name using the provided wikitext" option checked in "My preferences". Turn that off and delete the contents of the textbox above, and your signature should work. PleaseStand (talk) 19:32, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I did save the rewrite at User:MtRainier7/Veterans' Memorial Hall. I hope the article hits the mark this time, but if not, I'm ready to improve. And I did turn off the "Sign my . . . wikitext" option. Thank you for your help, my friend!MtRainier7 (talk) 16:03, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

I noticed some similarities, so I consulted another AfC reviewer. He said that some parts still have to be reworded; "The years passed, and inevitably the number of GAR members diminished..." is too close, as well as "Veterans' Memorial Hall is maintained by...". And yes, your signature worked correctly this time. PleaseStand (talk) 21:27, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Good enough--I will change more accordingly, and will compare them side-by-side. Thank you for consulting another editor on my behalf. And I'm glad the signature worked!66.173.73.72 (talk) 14:40, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

I have reworked it. I think it's ready to go. Do I submit to the "auto" submission option? Do I send it to you again (I can't imagine you would want to receive it again!)? Thank you for walking me through this process.MtRainier7 (talk) 17:58, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

I would advise either putting the new version of the page at the same location User:MtRainier7/Veterans' Memorial Hall (I will see it) or sending it to Articles for Creation again (another reviewer will look at it). PleaseStand (talk) 19:59, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

I did send it to talk:MtRainier7/Veterans' Memorial Hall. If you don't mind a last pass, I would appreciate it. I did try to eliminate similar phrasing, etc. I hope it passes this time, but if not, I am persistent! Thank you.MtRainier7 (talk) 20:43, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Looks better, and a Google News search seems to suggest notability. Do you want me to move it to article space for you? Your account is old enough and has made enough edits to be able to do this yourself now, but I am willing to help with that as well as cleaning up the formatting. PleaseStand (talk) 21:24, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
