hey Plainsman, I saw you found my talkpage and already know how to sign your posts, great! When you post something on a talkpage which is not related to an existing discussion (such as your post to my talkpage), people normally make a new section. You can do this by clicking on the "new section" button on the top right of the page or by typing =="Insert section title here"== on the page, replacing the bracketed stuff with whatever title you want the section to have. Making new sections makes it easier to have multiple discussions on the same page and find new posts. Feel free to try it out! On a sidenote, have you seen the excellent Help:Introduction to policies and guidelines?

Creating a new article

I see that you are creating a new article called Memoirs of Strategic Leaders in the Global War on Terrorism. An article with only a single header and no other content is most surely going to be deleted (see Criteria for Speedy Deletion #A3). If you are going to work on your article incrementally, it would be best to do so in your user space. You can create a page called User:Plainsman89/Memoirs of Strategic Leaders in the Global War on Terrorism and edit the article there to your heart's desire with little fear that anyone will delete it. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Non-free images and why you should stay away from them

Hi Plainsman. Wikipedia is supposed to be a free encyclopedia, which includes using only free content. Copyrighted text and images are non-free and are not allowed. The single exception to this relies on the concept of fair use as it is applied in United States copyright law. (US law applies because that is where our servers are). We are very conservative in how and when fair use can be applied, which is why we force people to make non-free contents rationales, as you did at File:Karl Rove Courage and Consequences.jpg. Without such a rationale specific for the page it is being used in, you are not allowed to use the image, whether it is in an article, or your userpage or in a sandbox. That is what happened with File:GeorgeTenetBook.jpg. The file has a rationale for the article about the book, but not for your page. You need to add a second rationale if you want to keep using it.

However, I am afraid that even with a rationale you will still not be allowed to use those book covers. I am not an expert in this stuff by any measure, but my understanding is that book covers are all but exclusively allowed in articles about the books themselfs (such as At the Center of the Storm: My Years at the CIA). The problem is that their presence must "significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." (see wp:NFCC) In other words, unless the text contains an in depth discussion of the cover image it is not allowed.

Personally, I would advise you to stay away from those images for now. The planned article could work fine without them and right now they are just big time sink. Yoenit (talk) 16:01, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

This is what I was afraid of. Non-free content is not allowed on pages that are not articles and sandbox material does not count as articles, so this file is indeed eligible for deletion. Nothing to do at this other than try to create an article first and then see if we can re-upload or undelete the image at a later point. Yoenit (talk) 19:00, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia: I want to offer a couple of comments on your work so far. I hope they are helpful to you:

• What you did with File:Karl Rove Courage and Consequences.jpg would be very good for an article on the memoir, Courage and Consequences: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight. Congratulations on figuring out the system of copyright tags and non-free use rationales. Unfortunately as Yoenit explains above, it is very unlikely the cover could be used on any other article. And unfortunately the cover image will probably be deleted as unused before an article on the memoir is written. But do remember what you did on the cover: it was just right.
• I have concerns that your draft page Memoirs of Strategic Leaders in the Global War on Terrorism may not ultimately be suitable as an article. Please see WP:What Wikipedia is not. Although I can’t tell for sure what you have in mind for the page, the title and the present content seem more like an essay or research paper than an encyclopedia article to me. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; so consider whether your page will be the kind of thing that would be included in the Encyclopædia Britannica. The title and present content suggest to me is that you are writing original research or original synthesis. If that is the case, you need to know that Wikipedia has a policy of not publishing original thought; see WP:No original research.
