Action of 9 August 1780[edit]

Thanks for writing. I'm wondering if you've ever come across a (geographic) name for this engagement. I believe I've seen it as "Battle of Cape Santa Maria" after Cabo de Santa Maria (Cape Verde)not, confusingly, the mainland Portuguese cape of the same name, which gave its name to a naval action of 1804. Any chance you could verify this? Albrecht (talk) 01:37, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to draw your attention to Wikipedia's policy on edit warring, which you've been violating on both Trafalgar order of battle and casualties and Battle of Trafalgar. Thank you for uploading File:Lope de Hoces Saint Martin.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. España en el Palatinado[edit]

Hola Pietje96.

  • [1] In July 1630, the Spanish handed over most of their German forts, including Lingen, to the emperor and the Catholic League. Only Rheinberg, now thier chief stronghold on the Rhine, was retained. Also, forces were withdrwan from their garrisons in the Lower Palatinate.
  • [2] Nevertheless, very soon after Olivares uttered these words, the Spanish garrison - to the amazement of the Dutch - marched out of Lingen, leaving ther fortress in the hands of imperialist troops. By late 1630, as Aytona reported to the king, the only Spanish garrison which remained on the right bank of the Rhine was that of Düsseldorf, capital of Berg and Residenz of the dukes of Jülich-Cleves. Pfaffenmütze was dismantled and abandoned by its Spanish garrison, in September 1630, not under pressure from the elector of Cologne but out of sheer strategic necessity.[...] [3] With the Dutch capture of Rheinberg and Orsoy, in the summer of 1633, the Spanish hegemony in north-west Germany was a thing of the past.

Saludos. Trasamundo (talk) 20:21, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Naming a victory[edit]

Hi, should we deduce from this image File:Placa del panteón.JPG that the Action of 9 August 1780 might be known in Spain as Combate de las Azores? Perhaps we ought to find a basis for a move, considering the engagement seems rather more substantial than the single-ship actions or skirmishes usually filed as "Action of Day Month Year." Albrecht (talk) 01:25, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear pietje, you are right. I suppose, after all that it is a semantic argument that will make little difference to the article itself. It is, by the way, a good article as are a great many of your other contributions. All the best, Ian 14:43, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Re. [13]: excuse me, but how do you know? I'll be more than glad to retract that deletion discussion if we have clear evidence about the status of the painting, but you must be seeing something I'm not seeing there. – Right now I can't even verify there ever was a painter by the name of Mariano Badía. Fut.Perf. 13:58, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Update: there seems to be one Mariano Badía Sanmartín (1901–1986) [14]. Is that the one you mean? In that case, it wouldn't of course be PD yet. Fut.Perf. 14:02, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I'm honestly still a bit confused, because the picture you uploaded doesn't look like a colored engraving at all (more like a watercolor), but if the print catalog identifies it properly as a work of 1872, that's fine. Could you add the info to the image page, with a citation of the catalogue? Fut.Perf. 15:26, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, on reflection, I think I now know why I had such a bad feeling about that image: it's actually wildly inaccurate, historically. Those ships look nothing like early 16th century ships. The hulls are much more like the galleons of almost a hundred years later, and even at that time, only very few of the very largest ships would have had two gun decks with this many cannons. Fut.Perf. 18:17, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, good, if we agree on that, I can just delete it. Thanks for your response. Fut.Perf. 19:18, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh BTW, sorry I forgot to notify you, I've had to delete one more: this one, credited to an Osprey Publishing book and its illustrator, was evidently modern and as such copyrighted. Fut.Perf. 19:24, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

July 2017[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on American Revolutionary War. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 23:51, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Plagiarism/copyright violations in Battle of Abrolhos[edit]

I notice you were the main author of the the article Battle of Abrolhos. Most of the text in the article was plagiarized verbatim from David Marley's Wars in the Americas (1998, 2008), which is not in public domain. I am inquiring if you are Marley or have been given a copyright release by the holder. If not, this article needs to be entirely rewritten to avoid deletion.
