GOCE June 2014 newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors May 2014 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 51 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We reduced our article backlog from 2,987 articles to 2,236 articles in May, the lowest backlog total since we began keeping records in 2009! Since at least 300 new articles were tagged during May, that means we copy edited over 1,000 articles in a single month. Amazing work, everyone!

Blitz: The June blitz will run from June 15–21. This blitz's theme is Politics. Sign up here.

Election: You can nominate yourself or others for the role of Coordinator for the second half of 2014 here. Nominations will be accepted until June 14. Voting will begin on June 15 and will conclude on June 28.

Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis.

Peacock is for articles

About this: This change is okay, although your rationale is not really relevant. Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines#Not part of the encyclopedia says that it's not necessary or even appropriate for non-articles to comply with content-focused guidelines. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:47, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the message WhatamIdoing. My view is that if people see peacock terms used in policies and and guidelines then they are more likely to use them in the article space. It's no big deal really and I'm not that fixated about it. I suppose I must have had a now forgotten bad experience with a peacock when I was a child.  Philg88 talk 19:03, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
No problem. The ever-growing set of rules around here is impossible to keep up with. I've told you about one that I knew, so next time, it'll be your turn to help me out.
(Peacocks are not exactly friendly creatures. I don't think I'd want to let a child get within biting distance.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:56, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Copyeditings are required here. So, I you don't mind can you do some copyeditings. The above DYK; I checked it, the article is 1167 characters prose and the minimum is 1500. Thank you. Jim Carter (talk) 12:06, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

@Jim Cartar:  Done  Philg88 talk 15:11, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
Wow, thank you very much Phil. BTW I was thinking to take this article for DYK. Will it qualify, I don't know if article about films goes for DYK or not. I have selected the hook [...] that Ek Hi Raasta' was directed and produced by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner B. R. Chopra? Jim Carter (talk) 16:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
Hey Jim Cartar, you're welcome. As far as DYK goes, films are no problem but it's not a very interesting hook. I'd look for something else to create with a bit more sizzle. Best,  Philg88 talk
I forgot to sign; First time But Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest award in Indian cinema. Recently we have an article at ITN section about Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Can I give it a try? Jim Carter (talk) 16:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
Of course you can, you don't need my permission. Go for it!  Philg88 talk 17:29, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
Phil I have added an image of Praveen Prem; Please take a look. Thanks Jim Carter (talk) 07:20, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
Hmm ... looks like you snapped a picture from a TV show or video. If that's true then it is a copyvio as you have created a derivative work of a copyrighted item without permission. If I'm right I recommend that you request deletion tout de suite.  Philg88 talk 08:11, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
I didn't know that. Actually the photo was given by my friend (I told you earlier). I was searching for a free image but I can't find any so I thought of giving a try with this one after polishing the image with Picasa. Anyway I have removed the image from the article and will nominate it by evening (IST). Thanks. Jim Carter (talk) 08:36, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
Cool, that's the right thing to do.  Philg88 talk 09:19, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

BTW I saw you improving maps so can you improve this one too. Jim Carter (talk) 10:03, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Why? What's wrong with it?  Philg88 talk 11:54, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
I know nothing about maps. But I was thinking if you can make it look like google earth or google map etc. Just kidding.
It's fine as it is in its standard Wikipedia format.  Philg88 talk 08:13, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
I saw your comments at this AfD. The author has changed the name of the article to "Trial of Cody Legebokoff" so I was thinking when it is no more a biography then should we change our !vote to keep?? Jim Carter (talk) 07:34, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Hey Jim Cartar. Please be careful with that AfD. There is currently a discussion at ANI about this so I would wait and see what transpires. It's not a simple question of switching !votes. In future if you want to leave me a message, please put it in a new section unless it relates to the previous topic. It's hard to keep track otherwise - I nearly missed this one.  Philg88 talk 08:11, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Ok. Jim Carter (talk) 08:22, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Some advice please.

Hello again! When I wrote Mästerby I actually collected info from four small articles on SweWiki (Mästerby, Mästerby church, Mästerby county and the battle of Mästerby). I thought it was better to have one substantial article instead. Now I'm on to Lummelunda and I face similar circumstances, only this time one of the articles, Lummelundagrottan already exists on EngWiki. (Lummelunda is spread out over 8 articles, each with 8-10 sentences! Church, parish, county, site, cave, factory, settlement, community. Crazy...) I could write just about Lummelunda and also expand the Lummelundagrottan with the translation from SweWiki, but I really think that it all belong in a single article. With a redirect at the old Lummelundagrottan. The settlement is nothing without the cave, the same way Mästerby is really insignificant without the battle and Kräklingbo without the fire. Do you have any thoughts on this? - W.carter (talk) 15:08, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey kompis, how's it going? My view is that you should consolidate everything you translate (church, factory, cave etc) under Lummelunda but keep Lummelundagrottan as a separate article as it is notable geographically on its own. Summarise the cave in the Lummelunda article and use {{main}} under the section heading. English Wikipedia does not usually have an article for each individual feature of a relatively small settlement. As an aside, in the Lummelunda article I don't like the list of individual farms per Wikipedia is not a directory. "Lummeluda is a farming district" would be sufficient. Best,  Philg88 talk 05:49, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Hey Philg88, confused as ever when dealing with SweWiki. But you made some excellent points. And I thought I had eliminated the all the worst parts from the original articles. They really put anything in the articles. Be thankful that you don't speak Swedish and have to experience the horror of it. :-/ The use of {{main}} solves the cave. I had not thought about it! This will be the first time I use it. You see... still learning. I don't have much time to Wiki today, just wanted to check in, but I will get to work again in a couple of days. Best, - W.carter (talk) 10:56, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello Master Yoda, it seems that your padawan "has gone and done something rather rash". Again. Well, I won't be writing anything about the churches on Gotland. As it happens someone else is. :) When I was asked by Krenakarore to help with some translation he told me that Yakikaki is doing some great work on churches in Sweden. So I looked, and yes there is the nice Template:Churches on Gotland with articles about churches in places now marked with red on the Template:Gotland County. So I had the idea that by "linking" these templates some of the red on GC would turn blue and actually lead somewhere e.g. to the right church on the CoG template. And the churches on the CoG would get some more links. I did a test with Alva (Gotland), see this, and my explanation on the corresponding talk page to see if anyone minded. It's been a day and still no sign of bots or objections.

When I started with all these little settlements it was because they were just redirects to the asteroids named after the places in a similar manner, and that's where I got the idea. (Example: early version of Kräklingbo ) Do you think it would be ok if the rest of these redirects were created, or is this bad form? User:Yakikaki has a similar sort of "projectlist" as I have at List of churches on Gotland. I have to see to the translation of Gryta Church when I get home tonight, but after that I will return to my settlements. Best, - W.carter (talk) 14:32, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Mr. Carter, once everything you do can be reverted I see no reason why you shouldn't do that. Go ahead please ! Krenakarore TK 14:39, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
I see it now, and I think you shouldn't do that. Master Yoda is right. Red links are there to be created (I don't like them either). This you're trying to do was done in List of castles in the Central Bohemian Region and related lists. Some users did that because they thought a castle is pertinent to the place where it is. I would create stubs instead. Krenakarore TK 16:45, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Hi Young Skywalker. Not overly rash use of the force but I'm not convinced it's the right way forward. Red links aren't really a problem, there were million of them last time I counted (kidding) and in the case of GC it's highly likely that the target articles will be created in the future - when doesn't matter because there is no deadline. Redirecting to a church from a template headed "Minor settlements" is a bit misleading. It's like buying some goldfish online but receiving pirhana fish instead (that analogy is a bit over the top but it will do). In short, I'd wait until you have a target minor settlement article before instantiating the link. Cheers, [[User:Philg88| Philg88 ]]talk 16:06, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you both of you! I will have to agree, I was just being sneaky. I remember how confusing it was to go looking for Kräklingbo and ending up on 8682 Kräklingbo. Same galaxy, wrong planet! I thought that a church would not be as bad. I think I'll hit the middle road and create some very quick stubs as a way station between the templates, and fix them up as soon as I can. I'm nearly done with the "asteroids", but more of them keeps popping up all the time. If I ever get my mitts on that astronomer... The goldfish/piranha concept seems like an interesting business idea, something for the Monty Python company, The Confuse a Cat Ltd. I'll make something for Alva (Gotland) later, but now I'm of to Gryta Church. See ya! - W.carter (talk) 18:26, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

About a website

Can you access this website? I just asked someone; but they said the website is not opening maybe time out. (But it is opening when I checked) So can you re-check if the website is opening or not? Jim Carter (talk) 10:00, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes. The problem for the other user may be that it has an auto-redirect, which is blocked by my Firefox settings so I don't know where it goes.  Philg88 talk 10:14, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
Hmm. I told her to switch browser but haven't got any reply. Jim Carter (talk) 18:58, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

SVG Locators

I cannot succinctly express the gratitude I have for each new PRC provincial locator map that is released, most recently Hunan! It's been a long hiatus since the last productive period in 2011 (as I recall Chongqing, Fujian, Hubei were released then). Due to the turning away of some prolific cartographers at Commons, I was beginning to lose hope that the PRC set would be completed, but this seems to be akin to 1942 in World War II.

Secondly, the county-level borders is a leg up over most of the maps at Commons, which only had prefecture-level borders. For a political map, I consider that more important than the rivers and lakes, but there will be another time for these bodies of water.

Where there are pre-existing maps highlighting a place's admin boundaries within the province, I don't think the locator maps should completely supplant them. In fact, I think they complement each other, since the locators specifically map the seat/urban core, which may not be near the centroid. "My master, Annatar the Great, bids thee welcome!" 07:28, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

At the risk of parroting Lieutenant of Melkor, I can only say "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" -Zanhe (talk) 07:43, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
Hey guys, glad to hear you like it and a thank you to Zanhe who alerted me to the missing location maps in the first place - sorry it's taken me a while to get round to doing them. @Lieutenant of Melkor:: I agree that the location map is not necessarily appropriate for highlighting admin boundaries. Time permitting, I will make derivatives for each of the prefecture-level divisions. The hard work was doing the base map, now that I have a template to work from it will be relatively easy to create derivatives. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:26, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Moved to User:Philg88/Barnstars

Thank you kompis. Seeing editors like you blossom is immensely satisfying. Best,  Philg88 talk 14:16, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
It is not just from me. Your help to all newbies (and others) has not gone unnoticed. It is a bit difficult in this kind of "open" environment to do something for someone, in secret, collectively. If we all worked in the same building I would be the one standing by the water cooler taking up a collection from all the other newbies for a Barnstar for you. - W.carter (talk) 15:52, 14 June 2014 (UTC)
Yes very true W.carter. Phil, you will soon get a surprise. Jim Carter (talk) 08:27, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
@Jim Cartar:. That's an intriguing comment. No doubt you will tell me what the surprise is in the fullness of time :) Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:21, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
The surprise is not going to come from me. But from some other editors. I have kept it secret for a month now, so I'm not going to say anything else. Let the time disclose the secret. But I trust, you will like the surprise. Jim Carter (talk) 09:47, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Crease removal

Hi, and congratulations on your excellent work on File:Pevensey_Castle_plan.png.

I am curious about how you removed the creases. I can do stitching myself, in various ways; but I have never been able to remove creases competently. Do you have any advice? Maproom (talk) 11:18, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey Maproom, nice to see you here! I'd love to say that it was all done by magic but that would be only partly true. After I spliced the four original TIFFs together I used the Photoshop Magic Eraser with the sensitivity turned down to get rid of the majority of the creases and the contrast issues. The I created a new adjustment layer and whacked the gamma correction to the maximum. That highlighted any remaining problem areas which I then zapped. Finally, I used the Pencil tool at maximum zoom to replace any areas affected by the foregoing steps. Hope that helps. Best,  Philg88 talk 15:52, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! I use PaintShopPro rather than Photoshop, but I think it must have similar tools. I'll have a look for them. Maproom (talk) 18:50, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Clarification on References

Hi,In my article Swarachakra(which was rejected) i have used some references which needs to modified.During research on development of swarachakra, they used some information from previously published research paper (http://www.researchgate.net/publication/202165683_Why_alphabetic_keyboards_are_not_easy_to_use_Keyboard_layout_doesn%27t_much_matter) by Don Normal(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Norman). I don't know how to include this information. Also for reference ( http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2593905) is a research paper presented in and Archived in ACM research library.I have required permissions to access the information.Shubham.opensource (talk) 09:38, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Shubham.opensource and thank you for your message. With regard to your proposed sources, does Norman's paper contain significant coverage of Swarachakra? It looks like it was published in 1984 so that sounds unlikely. Although this might make interesting background reading, if there is no mention of Swarachakra, it won't do anything to establish the required notability for Wikipedia articles. Similarly, the second paper looks like it was written by the creators of the product, which means that they are not independent and thereby do not count as a reliable source. I'm sorry to sound so negative but unless you can find reliable, independent references then the article will not be accepted. Good luck!  Philg88 talk 10:06, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Hi, I have collected some references.I wanted to know if they are good enough on your parameter of independent and reliable sources.

First the main research Paper of swarachakra was "Design and evaluation of Devanagari virtual keyboards for touch screen mobile phones"(http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2037422).I wrongly gave the link to recent short paper. 1. A paper by Researchers from Leading Universities have mentioned about Swarachakra in their paper titled Design and Evaluation of Soft Keyboards for Brahmic Scripts (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2461318) archieved in ACM. 2.A widely read vernacular daily "Loksatta" published about Swarachakra .(http://www.loksatta.com/vruthanta-news/marathi-typing-easily-possible-on-android-phone-550133/).More about Loksatta((https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loksatta_%28newspaper%29)) 3.Similarly Maharastra Times (A part of Times Of India group-most read english Daily) published to make people aware of Vernacular typing (http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com/edit/column/marathi-mudra/-/articleshow/24559920.cms),(http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com/infotech/mobile/marathi-mobile/articleshow/31050924.cms).Shubham.opensource (talk) 13:11, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Shubham.opensource and welcome back. I'll split your references into a numbered list following the order above:
  1. Just takes me to the ACM Digital Library search page.
  2. ACM Digital Library again. There is a charge for access so I cannot tell from the abstract if the paper contains the requisite coverage.
  3. According to Google Translate, this article is about farmers committing suicide.
  4. Loksatta would be considered a reliable source, but see the comment above.
  5. HTTP Status 404
  6. HTTP Status 404
With regard to refs 1 & 2 above, although paywall services are not prohibited under Wikipedia guidelines, you should try and find a way to make the reference available free of charge. See this link for more details.
Based on the above, your article still has inadequate referencing. Sorry!  Philg88 talk 13:34, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Please visit these links again.I have kept them properly now.Sorry to bug you so many times in a single day.Language Input research is still less in India and very necessary as majority does not English.Links were not working as few extra characters were clubbed together . People trying to work in this direction face many issues which can be easily helped out if they are able to know about Swarachakra Input tool and behind the scene works as all the resources used are free or developed and released for free.I can mail you a copy of research papers if thats okay. Also, i wanted to know that if people cite/use some research paper in their paper, does that make our information reliable? 1.The english translation is not perfect. http://www.loksatta.com/vruthanta-news/marathi-typing-easily-possible-on-android-phone-550133/ 2. http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2037422 [Main research paper- basis of Swarachakra] 3. http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com/infotech/mobile/marathi-mobile/articleshow/31050924.cms 4 http://maharashtratimes.indiatimes.com/edit/column/marathi-mudra/-/articleshow/24559920.cms 5. A website that provides information about useful app for free (Though not much reliable on wiki parameter) http://swarachakra-marathi.android.informer.com/ .Shubham.opensource (talk) 14:51, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Shubham.opensource You can bug me as many times as you like so don't worry about that. You've put a lot of work into your draft and I have no problem helping you.
As for the references:
  1. There is a relevant picture and I get the gist of what it says from Google Translate, so this is an acceptable reference.
  2. As I said above, this is behind a paywall and it's written by the authors of the product, which means it cannot be used to establish notabiity of the topic.
  3. Same as 2) above without the picture.
  4. Ditto
  5. This is borderline but it does verify the existance of the product and can be used as a background reference.
So, we now have three reliably sourced independent references and a fourth background reference. You now need to add these to the draft in the relevant places. There is no need to delete the previous relevant/available sources. Once you have done that, let me know and I'll re-review it. Best,  Philg88 talk 06:08, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Please have a look at my article (it's in my sandbox)and reply if the references are in proper place. Thanks by the way.Shubham.opensource (talk) 18:53, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Shubham.opensource My apologies, but somehow I've got the count mixed up - as Draft:Swarachakra stands now there are two reliable references (#3 and #6) and one usable background ref (#5). I am not happy that the others are enough to push this over the notability threshold given the independence/paywall issues involved. I'm asking Jim Cartar to take a look at this because he will understand the language/reference weight issues better than I do. From my point of view, I would really want to see one more reliably sourced reference before this moves to the main space. Best,  Philg88 talk 07:22, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
I will take a look by tomorrow (I'm going out of town today and will return by tomorrow morning). Thank you for the ping, Phil and please try to compile all the related sections on a single thread here. I'm having trouble to edit due to so many sections; Jim Carter (talk) 12:03, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Once again i am bugging you.I wanted to know about the threshold number of references you require for any article. Also i have added on more reference.(#7)(NOTE:#6 & #7 might look similar but they are in bit different context and different point of time. ).Also for reference 8, i wanted to say that they have not mentioned about Swarachakra but this project has used his research analogy in some manner.Thats why i have used it.should i remove it?Any way i also wanted to point out, the research papers i have linked mainly because they can be easily accessed and used for further research by research community in India as most of the Government Run institution are signatory of the ACM Digital library.Shubham.opensource (talk) 10:53, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Jim Cartar. I've merged the sections and look forward to your input. I'm asking Shubham.opensource not to create another section and to wait for your response. Best,  Philg88 talk 15:30, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
((edit conflict) with lower case sigma bot) Okay. Loksatta and Maharashtra Times are Marathi daily newspapers and are reliable ones. The other all are repositories or libraries of books I suppose. So I guess you need to check if the book is reliable or not, rather than those search engines. I haven't checked the draft in accodance to the references. On a quick look the draft need some work. I will verify the references within some hours. Thanks, Jim Carter (talk) 07:19, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Hey Phil, I consulted with another editor (Who is much familiar with Marathi related article). See what he said. Jim Carter - Public (talk) 10:22, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the input Jim. I'm going to AGF for the non-accessible online sources based on the reliability of Loksatta and the Maharashtra Times. Best,  Philg88 talk 16:03, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm really very very very sorry Phil that I can't help much. I'm very very very very busy in real life (Working on a project which is not complete and the deadline is the day after tomorrow IST). That is the reason why I asked others to do this work. Please don't mind. I wanted to help but very sorry that I can't. Jim Carter (talk) 19:58, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

No problem Jim Cartar, it's all sorted out now. Good luck with your project (I assume you've received a call from Modi following his appointment :)) Best  Philg88 talk 04:32, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
He he he... Not exactly from Modi but I received some calls from another user. Project submitted, Brigadier is happy with my work. Thanks for wishing good luck, bhai. Jim Carter (talk) 06:46, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
