When is consensus bullying?

I feel as though I am being bullied out of Wikipedia when all I do for the most part is qualitatively improve articles by adding citations. I have a group of malign editors that have formed a cohort against me. They have searched really hard to find a few matters of dispute out of my 20,000 or more edits that I have made to this Project. I would appreciate some of your time.

If you are asking me to comment at the ANI discussion, I will look at it now - although it might have been better if you had actually linked to it, instead of me having to look through your talk page and contributions to see that that is what you are referring to. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 14:19, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

In reply to your message,i would like to see a page called sue williamson that was deleted 2 years ago. Cheers,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 16:34, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Content follows:
Sue williamson
Susan Williamson is the director of leadership and innovation networks for specialsit schools trust.

she formally worked at monks styke senior school in lincolnshire.she left the job in 2002.
Looking at Google, I can find no indication that Ms Williamson has received significant coverage either in news media, or in independent reliable sources - although the SSAT's own website obviously have about her. If your thought was to see if she might be notable enough to warrant her article being recreated, I would suggest that she is not - unless you have reliable independent sources which you did not have when you created the article on 8 July 2008, and which I was unable to find! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 16:47, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Word

In reply, if i see the word vapour and a user has changed it to vapor should i revert it? Is it vandalism? Should i warn the user? Gobbleswoggler (talk) 17:42, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

That depends how it is being used. Is the article in question written mostly in American English or British English? If it is British then it should probably stay that way. Like Steve said, is the article about a British or American subject, or if neither has the article shown a preference for one or the other methods of spelling in the past? The important thing is consistency, that there not be two different version in the article. So if you go with "vapour" then every "vapour", "humour" and "foetus" have to be that way in the article, or vice-versa.
That deals with whether you should revert it or not - as to whether it is vandalism, that depends on the user in question. Are they just altering something because they speak American/British English and think that is how it is spelled? The best place to start is discussion - check the article to see which method is preferred, and then tell the editor about it. Probably they just don't know it's a big deal. And if they are unco-operative then you can start warning or taking the matter to an admin.
One other thing - is there an FAQ on the article talkpage? Sometimes it has an advisory note about preferred spelling. Cheers. Weakopedia (talk) 22:20, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I just saw your message, and then Weakopedia just said everything I was going to (although I hadn't thought about the FAQ!) - thanks Weakopedia! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 22:22, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Changing the picture of the Wiki Entry "Singapore International Energy Week"

Hi Steve, Hope all's been good with you.

I am writing to get your help in changing the picture accompanying the Wiki entry "Singapore International Energy Week". The current picture used is specific to the 2009 event. I tried editing the picture in the entry but was not sure how to do so. Can you guide me how I can either send you the picture file or make the changes to the entry directly myself?

Thanks.

Matthew.lim (talk) 03:02, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Matthew! I'll leave instructions on how to do it later today or tomorrow -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternate account of Phantomsteve] 08:10, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Hello again! OK, here is a quick list of instructions on how to update the image:
  1. Save a copy of the image to your computer. Ideally if it is not already, resize it to be about 150x100 pixels (or similar)
  2. Go to File:SIEW_logo.jpg
  3. Near the bottom of the screen there is a link that says "Upload a new version of this file" - click on this
  4. Browse to the file on your computer, and select it.
  5. Keep the "Destination Filename" the same, so that you overwrite it
  6. For "File Changes", enter something like "Updating to current version of logo"
  7. For "Licensing", choose "Logo" and then click on "Upload file"
If you try this and have any problems, let me know, and we can go from there! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 18:20, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Steve, Hope all's great with you and your girlfriend! The instructions you gave for the picture upload were really great and I managed to upload a general picture of the Singapore International Energy Week minus the dates so that its not promotional.

When it's convenient for you, can i trouble you to help me with the below queries? I am still new to quite a few things in Wiki so wanted to check them with you.

  • The event has a few notable folks speaking and I was wondering if it'd be overly promotional to include the list of speakers at the event.
  • Is there a guide i can refer to so that i can properly reference new information that might be included in the entry? Am happy to run a draft by you first if its not a minor change.

Thanks once again for your help! hear from you when it's convenient for you.Matthew.lim (talk) 04:10, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Matthew - I'll give this some thought when I have a bit of time, and will hopefully give a reply tomorrow - otherwise it might not be until next week! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:19, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Hi Matthew! OK, I've thought about this a bit, and:
  1. My feeling is that such a list might be considered promotional. My advice would be to add such a list after the event, when there are reliable sources (such as press coverage). I think that having the keynote speaker would be OK, and the different events is OK - but a list of speakers would be too much. However, if there is press coverage at reliable sources (i.e. not the event's own website, or a press release) then it could be suitable for inclusion.
  2. For information on references, see Help:Footnotes which explains how to properly use references, if that's what you mean!
If you have any other queries, or if there is any way in which I can help further, please feel free to contact me again -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 07:29, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Oh, while I remember it, here are two other bits of advice:
  1. When you want a list, use * as the first character of the line (no spaces beforehand!) rather than - - this will show up as bullet points (I changed the ones above to asterisks!)
  2. When you are talking about a specific article on someone's talk page, it is a good idea to include a link to it. Rather than saying "Singapore International Energy Week", use [[Singapore International Energy Week]] which gives Singapore International Energy Week! However, if you want to link to a file (rather than have it show up on the page as an image), use [[:File:SIEW logo.jpg]] (i.e. with a colon before the File:) such as File:SIEW logo.jpg - otherwise it will insert the image instead!
Take care, -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 07:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Timothy Lin photo

Dear PhantomSteve:

The photograph as well as the footnotes (references) for the Timothy Lin article have been removed within the last few weeks. This surprises me because the photograph of Dr. Lin was approved by Wikipedia as well as the footnotes. Can you explain to me why the footnotes and photograph have been removed?

EMarley —Preceding unsigned comment added by EMarley (talkcontribs) 21:16, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

I'll look at that now... -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:20, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
I can tell you what happened, but not why! The picture File:TimothyLin 2.jpg was deleted as there was no evidence that permission had been received. However, I don't know why permission had not been received, as I had heard from Dr Hymer's Attorney showing that permission had been granted - and forwarded that to the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). I never heard from the WMF, but I wasn't really expecting to - I assumed that they would deal with the Attorney directly. I am going to re-contact the WMF, and also the attorney to let him know what is happening. Hopefully that will get this sorted out so that the picture can be used.
By the way, you said This surprises me because the photograph of Dr. Lin was approved by Wikipedia as well as the footnotes - if you are going by the notice that I placed saying that an email had been sent to the OTRS team, this is not the same as approval! I'm also not sure what you mean by the footnotes being missing - I can see a "further reading" section and "External links", but there have never been footnotes from what I can see. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:34, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
I have re-uploaded the version which I received from the copyright owner's attorney, and contacted permissions. Hopefully, this will now be sorted out! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 22:01, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

cite news

Thought I'd move this to your talk page... Would you recommend that I put the google news archives search URL in a <!-- --> after the cite news? I guess I'm just paranoid about people thinking I was blowing smoke on the reference for some reason. (no tb on my page needed) Naraht (talk) 13:32, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I personally never do. If people doubt your word, then they'll have to pay for the access! I would, though, put the quote from the search results in the cite news using the |quote=xxx parameter - that way, people can see what the quote was and whether it seems appropriate. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 14:08, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, but isn't the burden of proof on the person who provides the information, not the one who challenges it? (I am providing quotes from the google news search results)Naraht (talk) 15:00, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
My take on this is that when you add the citation, it can then be verified. You have met the burden of proof, as far as I am concerned - if someone thinks you are lying, then they can look into it further. Let's face it, if you were to use {{cite news}} for a print-edition newspaper, rather than an online source, they would not have the option to look at it (unless they live in the newspaper's publication area, in which case they can go to the newspaper's archives or a local library) - I think that the pay-per-view sources are similar, in that they can be verified, but not everyone can do so. If you use {{cite book}}, anyone reading the article will have to assume that you are telling the truth, unless they want to either try to buy a copy of the book, or get it from a library - it's still verifiable, but not immediately by 99% of readers. It's a case of AGF - unless there is reason to doubt the source, you would generally assume that it was correct. Obviously, if the reference about Genghis Khan and his love of Fraggle Rock was in a book called "Food Bars in the Antartic Science Bases", you'd assume it was wrong - if it's in a book by Jim Henson, you'd assume that it was likely to be a correct reference! Common sense goes a long way... -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 15:09, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
OK, I guess I see it. I've just feel like I've been burned on WP:AGF on this particular article List of Kappa Sigma Grand Conclaves, there is an AFD on it, and this actually came out of the issues on the Kappa Sigma article, where I've probably been as irritated as I've ever been on Wikipedia. But no wikibreak for me, "The sun will come out tomorrow..."Naraht (talk) 15:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Sure enough as soon as the semi-protection ended, the ip user started making their typical numerous vandalism edits again. As you are the one who protected it last time, would you mind doing it again? Kiwisoup (talk) 23:22, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

  • I am going to say no: none of the article has reliable sources cited, so I don't know which is the "correct" version. If you want the version which you have produced to be accepted as the "correct" one, you will need to provide some references. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 23:33, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
I added sources to the header of each year that verifies what is now the correct version of the article, except for 2007 where a source was needed for each section under it. Sorry, I'm just really frustrated that this person is so persistent and I'm the only one who has fought it because the article is for the most part ignored when it's not close to Halloween. Kiwisoup (talk) 01:15, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I've got to comments: firstly, we don't usually use citations in section headers! Secondly, all the references are from the event's own website, so not independent. While this is good enough for the events, can you find some references from independent reliable sources which show that this event as a whole is notable? From the article as it stands, I see no evidence of notability (the reference to haunt.com isn't particularly convincing, partly because there's no citation for it, and also because I do not see evidence that haunt.com is a reliable source as Wikipedia defines it). Has it been covered in the press? All the references that I could find were either press releases, or obviously based on press releases, which are not accepted as reliable sources, as they come from the organisation themselves - or they are "pay-per-view" - however most of those seem to be minor mentions (a sentence or two in an article about different events that are going on). -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 07:24, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
None of those references are from any sort of official Universal website, if you look closer. I can see how you would think that for thestudiotour.com. The claim that refers to hauntworld.com was not by doing and I am not concerned if it stays in the article or not. I encourage you to try to do better and see if you can find any supporting information that doesn't merely quote or summarize the press releases. Kiwisoup (talk) 03:47, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Also, the same user has started vandalising the Halloween Horror Nights (Orlando) page. I assume it is the same person because they are following the same habits of adding movies to the event that Universal Studios does not have any rights to use. Kiwisoup (talk) 03:58, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, some points:
  1. I apologise for thinking that thestudiotour.com was the official site - looking at it more closely, I can see that it is not - and I can see no evidence that it would meet our reliable sources criteria - and no evidence that either screamscape or hollywoodgothique meet the reliabilty criteria either.
  2. I did spend some time looking for sources - please don't "encourage [me] to try to do better and see if you can find any supporting information"! I looked, and didn't find anything reliable - if you think it is notable, I would encourage you to find something! I am considering putting this up for deletion, but will think on it some more and decide next week
  3. Apart from the spree on 7th June, there have been no further disruption to Halloween Horror Nights (Hollywood) - if there is further disruption, let me know and I will protect it again; regarding Halloween Horror Nights (Orlando), there is not enough recent disruption to justify protection (incidently, although both the IP ranges are from VA, this vandalism is from a different ISP - there is not enough evidence that this is the same person) - again, if further disruption occurs, let me know and I will consider protecting it.

Deletion of the HackerKey page

Hi,

I think that you might want to reconsider the deletion of the HackerKey page. There are plenty of references to the hacker key around the internet. It is true that the original source that explained the actual code was a web page that has been deleted, but hacker keys are still widely used (a simple google query shows a lot of people mentioning theirs: "hackerkey.com -site:hackerkey.com"). Also there is a tool to decode them: http://www.logicalchaos.com/projects/hackerkey/dehk.php . I would be more than glad to provide you with references to other web pages that mention the hacker keys.

Thanks Landhar (talk) 21:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. I deleted the Hacker Key article following a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hacker Key. If you have some reliable sources which are independent of hackerkey.com then please do provide them. I just looked and couldn't find anything for "Hacker Key" or "Hackerkey" at reliable sites -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 21:44, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, you relisting reads strange to me, since the argument "no discussion at all because WP:PARENT" was not weighed by you. Should I ask another review (should sound as an open question, no cynicism intended)? -DePiep (talk) 23:14, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

I have responded on the talk page, but if you want another admin to look at it and close it, then feel free to approach one to do so - I have made it clear that I would have no objection to that. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 23:26, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
I have asked for another admin to take a look (Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Talk:Anat_Kamm.23Requested_move). All discussion preferably at the Talk-page. -DePiep (talk) 00:20, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. Why am I getting this message? Mono's delivery method is random, so you probably showed up somewhere Mono went. :) monosock 03:57, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

ANI Semi-Protect

Could you semi-protect ANI for a couple hours? This user is added and readding posts about Ncmvocalist. The user is a sock of indef blocked User:Naadapriya. It would be helpful to semi-protect the page to give Ncmvocalist a rest. - NeutralHomerTalk • 08:16, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

As the user had been blocked, there shouldn't be any problems - but if there are, let me know (or report it at ANI, as I won't be online much until tomorrow - I'm potterng about in between dealing with the kids!) -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:24, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
Okie Dokie...have fun with the kids :) Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • 08:34, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

I suppose the current version does include block notices...although it's only been there 4 days and I don't remember it being there in the last few years. I would argue it should be removed and discussion had over whether the addition was correct or not. --OnoremDil 16:43, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

I'd have to think about that - but my gut feeling is that having to keep current block notices on the page is OK. Old block notices can be removed, but not the current one. Anyway, feel free to start a discussion on the talk page! Meanwhile, I will go with what it says at the moment - but thanks for letting me know your thoughts, it's always good to hear from other editors, because sometimes I make mistakes, and find out that way! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 16:55, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
The change was actually already undone by Xeno in the time between my leaving the message and your reply. --OnoremDil 16:59, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Indeed... While I'm interested in seeing arguments-for and -against that particular tweak, the good-faith change was without consensus and a mistaken belief that it used to say that (as far as I can tell it didn't-not for any length of time anyway). –xenotalk 17:03, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)As that is the case, I have removed the block notice as per the user's original intention, and left an apology explaining the reason. Thanks to both of you for contacting me! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 17:07, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
One example I can think of as food-for-thought, Steve, is a user who has been indefinitely blocked for some dispute, or what-have-you, and they don't want to change their behaviour, appeal, etc., they simply want to blank their talk page and {{retired}}. Should they be allowed? –xenotalk 17:05, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
I have started a discussion at the talk page about the subject, so that a definitive community consensus one way or another can be reached! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 17:13, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, commented there. –xenotalk 17:22, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

AfD's on US and Mexico promotion lists

Thanks for relisting them. That nonsense was out of hand. I hope you don't mind, but to eliminate the TL;DR factor I've collapsed the snowballs. I also reverted one of the contributors edits because they commented after your relisting but above the line. I left a message on their talk page about that (It was the IP and not Justa Punk). AinslieL (talk) 12:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I relisted them as there was insufficient contributors to form the consensus. A similar one where there were, I closed! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:35, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
User:AinslieL has removed my comments from two AFDs you have relisted (see [1] and [2]. I don't think I've been disrupive in any way per WP:SNOW. My comments were relevent to the discussion and his reasoning is because I listed comments above your relisting notice. The comments he refers to are specific replies to comments towards me (see here and here). I took the reslisting vote to mean that all votes now go below this line (per this edit). Is this nessessary? I feel this partly constitutes Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers and seems to cast virtually everything I have said in a negative light. Thank you for your time. 71.184.38.152 (talk) 12:41, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
  • I have reinserted your comments, and removed the "collapsed boxes". The comments you left were in response to the previous statements, and so need to be kept with those (they are clearly date-stamped, so there is no confusion here); as for the boxes, they have nothing to do with "WP:SNOW". This is not a reflection on either of you, I'm just making sure that the AfD is kept in accordance with what is expected: replies are kept with the comment they are replying to. New !votes or new comments need to be added below the "relist" notice, but replies do not -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:52, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Phantom I respectfully disagree with you. This is definitely a case of WP:SNOW. The arguments by both the IP and Justa Punk have been pointed and bureaucratic, especially in length. This discourages participation by other members because the page is too long and destroys the AfD. That's why I wanted it closed and relisted for a fresh start. If we leave the comments uncollapsed....I hope you understand what I am saying here. I'm trying to give the AfD the best chance of getting people to comment. AinslieL (talk) 13:39, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I understand your point, but others can comment below the relisted notice. I feel that this would allow people to comment, but still see the arguments used by both the IP and Justa Punk, which may be useful for their deliberations. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this point - you feel that the comments should be collapsed, I think they shouldn't! Feel free to discuss this at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard if you want - if other admins/editors who are uninvolved feel that it would be best to collapse those comments, I won't argue against it -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 13:47, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Nah that would take too long and would just add to the problems we already have. The argument between to IP and Justa Punk is just so long it just looks bureaucratic (which is why I applied WP:SNOW in objecting to it and I wasn't the only one) and would discourage other users from scrolling down and seeing the relisting. Punk accused the IP of doing that intentionally (that accusation has no proof really although the IP hasn't exactly been responsive to cutting back the length of his or her comments in response to it being brought to his attention). After all that though, I'll acquiese to you for now and we'll see what happens. If we get no more comments from new users in the next 24 to 48 hours I suggest that I may be vindicated. AinslieL (talk) 13:55, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
No one has actually asked me to limit my comments aside from Justa Punk calling me "long winded" and your claim I'm violating WP:SNOW. Both occured at the end of the discussion. I will try to "limit" my responces in future but it should be the weight and validity of my arguments not my particular writing style that is the focus of discussion. I think Wikipedia:Encourage full discussions supports this view. 71.184.38.152 (talk) 14:16, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
To the administrator, the collapse boxes are still on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of independent wrestling promotions in the United States. From your reply, I assumed they would be removed from both AFD discussions? 71.184.38.152 (talk) 14:27, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
  • I meant to do that at the same time as the other. I have removed them (for consistency), but I am going to start a thread about this at WP:AN to get my fellow admin's thoughts - I'll post the link to the thread here when it's up -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 14:31, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Would I be allowed to respond on this thread or is this for administrators only? 71.184.38.152 (talk) 14:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Yes, you can respond there when it is up, as the page is not currently protected from editing (if for some reason it gets protected because of excessive vandalism, let me know and I can copy any of your messages to the thread) -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 14:44, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your speedy reply sir. 71.184.38.152 (talk) 14:33, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of VisualMediaWorks article.

Hi Phantomsteve, I understand that this VisualMediaWorks article was deleted based on the reason "No evidence of notability" and there has been a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/VisualMediaWorks. However, there are quite a lot of reference editing work done to the article to increase the "evidence of notability". After the article was updated with more references and given more detailed description of the reference sources, there has been no more comments for deletion after that. All the "Delete" voting are all before the addition of the new references and given more detailed description of the reference sources. As stated in Wikipedia, i thought the discussion was not based on a vote system, especially those that voted "delete" before the improvement of the article.

The following is a more detailed description of the reference sources for the VisualMediaWorks article, especially for reviewers who are not familiar with the 3d computer graphics industry. Other than the 2 books cited that mentioned VisualMediaWorks' contribution in the field of architecture and design solution for an artist (- in fact, VisualMediaWorks was already been mentioned in Wikipedia under the article Alkaff Bridge), there are references from SIGGRAPH Asia (- the Asian version of SIGGRAPH, which stated in Wikipedia, "widely considered the most prestigious forum for the publication of computer graphics research"), Autodesk (- a name that no computer graphics related industry will not know as they produced all the major 3d softwares like 3ds Max, Maya and Softimage, I think a company will need to have certain notibility to be invited to give talks in their regional events), CG Times (- A very comprehensive magazine on Computer Graphics in Chinese. From the summary of contents on the same issue that featured VisualMediaWorks, they featured CG Movie Astro Boy (film), District 9, CG Animator Brian Dowrick, CG Graphics for Puccini's Musical Turandot, and many more), Channel NewsAsia (- as stated in Wikipedia, it is a major Asian news broadcaster with programmes telecast to more than 20 Asian countries and territories. I think this source should be a major reference in terms of notibility and significant coverage), Lianhe Zaobao (- as stated in Wikipedia, is the largest Singapore-based Chinese newspaper and establishing a regional presence for itself, with subscriptions for its print edition from Southeast Asia, China, Hong Kong as well as organisations such as the United Nations. I think the source should contribute to some significant coverage as well). It is really a pity that these major reference news sources Lianhe Zaobao and ChannelNewsAsia could not be linked online as the news articles on their website only display for 7 days. All news articles before 7 days are taken offline. I hope that major news references like this two sources will not be penalised as they did not sustain their news online for a long period of time.

If you think that the article is still not suitable for listing in Wikipedia, I hope to at least given a reason why after the new edit, the article references are still not notable enough and also suggestion on how to improve the article further before i submit again.

Thankyou and Congratulations for the upcoming new born! Lwxmagix (talk) 03:32, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

I agree with you that there had been no comments after the references had been added (and your comment on the same at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/VisualMediaWorks. I am going to undelete VisualMediaWorks and re-open the AfD - I will leave a message on your talk page when I have done this, and I will contact all the people who commented at the AfD. Thanks for contacting me -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 06:56, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Thankyou! In fact, I just hope that if the article is to be deleted... was at least given a reason why after the new edit, the article references are still not notable enough and also given suggestion on how to improve the article. Lwxmagix (talk) 09:01, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Guy Sebastian article

Hi Steve

Sorry to bother you when you are having a baby... just didnt know who to turn to and I investigated and know that you have had some experience with http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Ozurbanmusic&action=history on some other articles.

User talk:Ozurbanmusic is causing havoc over on the Guy Sebastian article - I havent really become involved yet but I have observed another editor there NatBelle trying to keep content from being deleted without any good reason for it being removed as well as images being added or replaced with other images ... so I did some more investigation and have found that Ozurbanmusic has a history of disruptive edits. There seems to have been good faith by Natbelle to discuss the sweeping edits that Ozurbanmusic is constantly making but this editor just blanks his talk page.

I know you are very busy so congratulations in advance on your new arrival... but could an admin editor take a look at Ozurbanmusic to get him to see some reason in not changing or removing contributions of work that has been refined and tweaked for the better of the article over a long period of time.

Best wishes, Di --Diane (talk) 08:20, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Di, thanks for contacting me. Unfortunately, I don't have time at the moment to look into this (I have to go out soon) - I could perhaps look at this later today, but your best bet might be to leave a message at the Admin's noticeboard (ANI) and ask for other admins to look into this?
Thanks for your congrats - we've still got just over 2 weeks until the baby is due, but at the moment my girlfriend needs to go to the hospital 3 times a week to monitor the baby - all's OK at the moment, but we'll see what the consultant says today!
If you have no luck at ANI, drop me a line this evening (UTC) and I'll see what I can do -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 09:14, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

thanks Steve for pointing me in the right direction - I will leave a message with other admins - have fun becoming a father soon! --Diane (talk) 09:50, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Stolen!

I've stolen your editnotice for my own talk page. Hope you don't mind too much! I'm always hugely impressed by your range of subpages, but too scared to try to work out how some of them work! GedUK  11:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

  • Help yourself! just add a comment <!-- Copied from ... -> for attribution purposes. If you want to use any specific subpage, let me know - I'll try to explain (the documentation isn't always 100% up to date, and some don't have any at all!) -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 16:54, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Done! I'll have a proper look through and see which look useful. The Admindashboard looks good, i'll need to investigate that further and might get back to you on implementation! GedUK  07:34, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Translation to Spanish of William Stanley (inventor)

Hi, I am Amarill0, a spanish wikipedia user. Nowadays, I'm translating your article William Stanley (inventor) in the Wikipedia in spanish. I have several problems with it. And that's why I'm writing here. Could you help me with some translations? First of all: In the text is said that he invented the "steel-wheel spider spokes". What is that? If you can, please post an image or try to describe it. Thanks!

PS: You have done a great job :D

Sincerely, Amarill0 ¿Can I help? 16:25, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! OK, I'm not sure what the precise Spanish equivalent is. This picture shows them - they are the metal rods between the rim around the outside of the wheel and the hub in the centre (es:Radio_(rueda) has the caption Radios de metal en una rueda de bicicleta.) - in particular, it is the "criss-cross" arrangement (like a spider's legs, I guess!) which makes them "spider spokes". I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know - I'll do my best to help! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 17:01, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Ok thanks! You are really attentive :). However, I go on having a doubt. Did he invent the whole wheel or just the "spider spokes"?. And, what's the meaning of "steel-wheel"? Is similar to "rim"?

Thanks again! Amarill0 ¿Can I help? 10:29, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

My understanding is that he invented the "spokes". I think the hyphen should be in there - they are wheel spokes which are made of steel -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 10:53, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

I have finally translated as "radios metálicos entrecruzados de rueda", which literally means: "steel-spoke crisscross from wheel". Do you think it's correct? Thanks again! Amarill0 ¿Can I help? 21:05, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Edit: another trouble has arised. When is said that "his father discouraged him from seeking a patent for this invention", did Stanley finally patanted the invention or didn't he? Thanks again! Amarill0 ¿Can I help? 21:08, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

No, he didn't patent it in the end. If I recall correctly, someone else patented it later -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 22:20, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Halloween Horror Nights Orlando/Hollywood.

Hello, the two wiki pages for HHN Orlando and Hollywood were recently put up for deletion by you and subsequently deleted, cause the Hollywood one was vandalized and one you noticed you said you have no sources to cite to keep them both up. Halloween Horror Nights is the biggest Halloween themed event held in the World.

They're held yearly at Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood. Both events bring in millions of tourists. They also have major sponsors like Burger King and Publix. If you would've simply "Googled" them, you would've seen what a big event it is. As asked here are some sources.

  • Thank you for those, however if you want the article to be restored you need to contact the deleting admin. Several of those sources would not count as reliable sources - and I don't have the time at the moment to look at the others to see if they constitute the significant coverage required by the notability criteria. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 12:09, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

AFD mixup

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dr.Mohammad Reza Marvi Mohajer with the result to delete, and the page at Dr.Mohammad Reza Marvi Mohajer was deleted. Unfortunately, during the course of the discussion, the page was moved from its original title to Mohammad Reza Marvi Mohajer, and that article is still available. Can you please delete it per the resolved AFD? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 11:52, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

What needs to be changed on the Elite Inspections & Consulting page you deleted? Also, how do I edit it? This is my Wiki attempt. Keithpotter21 (talk) 20:00, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

I deleted the article because it was unambiguous promotion or advertising. All the references came from the company's own web site. As it has been deleted, you cannot edit it. To have an article, you need to show that the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines and the notability guidelines for companies. You would need to find reliable independent sources which can be cited so that the information in the article can be verified - and I couldn't find any independent reliable sources about the company. If you really want an article for the company, then WikiCompany (who has no connection with Wikipedia) are trying to have entries for practically every company in the world (see Wikicompany:Wikicompany_v_Wikipedia). -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

On June 1, YellowMonkey declared that this editor is User:Bnguyen. I assume he is saying that in his capacity as a checkuser. If so, somebody should decline the unblock request. Since I've declined to unblock once, it's probably up to you next. I wonder if YM feels that others should make this decision, so he's delegating it. (Bnguyen might be thought of as impersonating YM). EdJohnston (talk) 02:28, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
