Reverted edit to Q Continuum

Just a comment on a recent edit of yours to Q Continuum that I reverted ("Popups" doesn't always give me the opportunity to append a reason): The text of the {{No footnotes}} banner says "This article contains a list of references, related reading or external links...". So, as the article does have external links, the {{References}} template (a redirect to {{Unreferenced}}) doesn't apply.

Actually, I used to use the {{Unreferenced}} template all the time myself until I found out about this. I've been having to slowly replace them as I encounter them... — Cbbkr (talk) 22:24, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, neither of the 2 external links are Reliable sources (open wiki = WP:USERGENERATED), hence they could never be used as citation, hence Pete's edit was correct. {{Memoryalpha}} is for EL sections only, not for citations. –Quiddity (talk) 22:59, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

The link you gave on my page was to an image that I did not submit, and have not edited. I would suggest you confirm that you did not accidentally alter the copyright of an image that you did not have permission to change. As I've said before, at the time of upload, I placed my service award images under the most permissive copyright tag that I was allowed, based on the copyright of the source images which I had modified. I continue to give permission to you or any other editor to change the copyright of my service award images to as free a license (up to absolute release into public domain) as can be, provided the copyright of source images allow derivatives to be released that freely. Thanks Pete, I'm not sure I would consider myself and experienced Wikipedian although I have been interested forever and would love to do more. I am just watching the recorded lab session right now and I know I will learning a lot.

I teach ICT for Teachers in graduate and undergraduate courses. In most classes students have to do a final project. I offer them the choice of doing a presentation, writing a paper or creating a Wikipedia article of substance that sticks. The occasional person takes me up on the challenge adding good quality entries. I hope to direct more people to this wonderful collaborative work. Aboriginal names RMs and CfRs

Hi Peter; I remember you, I think, as taking part in the discussions a few years ago about indigenous article and category names/structures in the PacNW; Pfly also suggested you as someone who had taken part. I know NorCalHistory was around for that, not sure who else; both he and Murderbike are on extended wikibreaks btw; recent unilateral changes by User:Kwami on many have resulted in arduous CfDs trying to revert to the indigenously-correct names, which are now common fare in Canada. It's beyond acrimonious now into the absurd, with citations produced and then picked apart on irrelevancies, and though there's others that support the moves I've proposed, they're ignored. And I'm being made the issue, and snotted on right and left, I'm an old man, I don't need this bullshit. I came back into Wikipedia last December or so because of anti-indigenous/POV edits on Idle No More and Theresa Spence, which have since been fixed and other experienced editors are now watching them; it's ironic and disturbing to me that indigenous preferences and accepted modern usages (e.g. Secwepemc vs. Shuswap people) are now being dismissed in favour or retrenchment of the discredited/outdate names despite tons of sources being produced to demonstrate the points demanded; they'll even say I haven't produced cites that I have, and presume to call me "childish" and accuse me of being parochial, when it's their attitudes that are parochial. A further problem with the RMs in question is that, like what's happened at Category:Squamish, which resulted from changing the Skwxwu7mesh article to Squamish people, and is a disaster in terms of the vagueness of the category's name now (as you know, I'm sure, Squamish's primary usage is for the town), the imposition of main article titles onto categories, and eventually bypassing redirects and substituting the outdated/discredited/"colonialist" names in texts in other articles, is going to cause a lot of problems because of the other uses of those older names, i.e. Chilcotin, Lillooet, Shuswap, etc....and "Thompson" for the Nlaka'pamux. Picayune silliness has ensued, I've spent over a week, as a professional writer who's around me during that time has pointed out, and more, on these, and I don't get paid for all that time, and my knowledge is being not just dismissed out-of-hand but treated very derisively. I don't need this shit, quite frankly, and may leave Wikipedia once again, though I'm pondering where in the hierarchy to take t he whole matter; not ANI, there's more than one editor involved in the "attack" mode and t he picking-apart obstructionism that's going on.....not an RfC, as more t han a comment is needed; ArbCom maybe, though I'm not clear on what they do. These RMs need closing, persuasive citations are rife, but ignored by those opposing the move or just being fussy, and who derogate Canadian and native sources saying "we don't care what your parochial local perspective" etc.....reason I'm here is because if I could locate the old discussions about all this, and the conventions that evolved by consensus, it might help. These usages are official now, most of them anyway, but we're hearing "we don't do official names at Wikipedia"....fact of the matter is the Queen Charlotte Islands->Haida Gwaii RM was finally clinched when the name was made official i.e. by government naming bureaus in Victoria and Ottawa. What's arbitrary is the nature of all the objections, and typically they demand cites without providing any of their own; Kwami has ranted he doesn't have to produce cites, it's not about disproving what he says, but about me proving what I'm saying; but his claim that these are the "most common" usage is complete horseshit, and he won't produce any cites to back that up, instead he dwells on whether or not they can be English words because "nobody knows how to pronounce them". The "article titles not in English" line has also been used, as if native-name articles don't exist (e.g. Mi'kmaq and its category, among hundreds of examples. Sorry for the rant, just fielding the problem and wondering if you can recall those discussions that we had while trying to sort out all the Pacific Northwest Coast/Northwest Plateau people/government articles and categories.....guidelines need to be established about all this; but right now, as I sad, the frustrations and insults and patronizing attitude from people who don't even know the subject matter at hand is so tiresome and degrading I'm considering leaving Wikipedia again for somewhere I might get paid for all this kind of time I put in on such matters and where I don't have to put up with the gamesmanship and obstructionism that's going on, and the ongoing attempts to make the RMs about me instead of the cites provided. These are, for your reference, to be found at Talk:Lillooet people, Talk:Kutenai people, Talk:Chilcotin people, Talk:Thompson people and Talk:Shuswap people. Amazingly, the CfD at Category:Sto:lo people looks like it's doing just fine....[the diacriticals on the current form of that are why This CfD).I'm finding it really grating, viewing my watchlist, which as you can guess is huge, seeing so many category fiddlings and code-fixes and bot-activity and very little in the way of actual article writing; people rearranging deck chairs on a ship, as it were. And here I am, the person who's probably done t he most in the way of FN articles and categories, not just being treated as if I'm stupid (gag) and that my extensive experience with these subjects has no value at all....the chauvinism towards native peoples in some of these RMs is also very shocking. Sorry I couldn't have been more succinct here, there's a lot that's gone on, as you'll see; Pfly, Montanabw, KootenayVolcano, OldManRivers and others have all made strong comments in support, they just get ignored......Skookum1 (talk) 08:18, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Conflict of Interest

Hi pete,

I think that I am having a conflict of interest problem that you spoke about in class tonight. I was trying to add a exhibition section to the Royal Ontario Museum page and was told it sounded too promotional. This was not my intention. However, I don't understand what I did wrong seeing as I was just trying to write factual information. This is what I wrote: Mesopotamia The Mesopotamia exhibition will be at the ROM from June 22, 2013 in the Garfield Weston Exhibition Hall located in the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal on Level 2B until January 5th 2014.[80] The exhibit showcases over 170 objects from the collections of the British Museum.[80] Urban civilization started in Mesopotamia where the first cities and complex forms of organization and economic activity emerged. The exhibition will teach people about Mesopotamia’s social and technological developments through time in ancient Sumer (4000-2000 BCE), the dominance of the Assyrian World Empire (1000 – 600 BCE), and the rise and fall of Babylon (600 -540 BCE). [80] Exhibition highlights include gold jewelry found in the tombs at the Royal Cemetery in the city of Ur, several artifacts illustrating the accomplishments of King Hammurabi (1792 – 1750 BCE), and a statue of King Ashurnasirpal II. Image copyright issues

Hi, I noticed you made a post to WP:CP regarding an image copyright issue for File:US Soccer logo.svg. I'm not an expert in that department, but I believe that the Template:SVG Logo appended to the file answers your copyright concern, as the image is displayed nominally at 501x501 pixels and so should not be a problem. However, if you still wish to have the nominal display size reduced, I recommend tagging it with {{Non-free reduce|type=svg}} so that its nominal size can be reduced by someone who is more knowledgeable about Wikipedia's non-free image guidelines. Pete, thanks for a great class. I am trying to edit an article I started which got rejected for non-verifiable references. I went on chat and got some coaching not to use "Find a Grave". No problem, I have another reference. The problem is I am trying to edit my article in the Sandbox. I don't see how to remove or replace the references. There is this weird message I hadn't seen before too.

@Melisse May: Happy to help, although I think I made a mistake, by misunderstanding the question. My apologies for that. (Someone told me years ago, "You're not a real Wikipedian until you've made, and learned from, at least 50 mistakes." I'm waaaay past there!) Curiosity, and making mistakes, are the best paths to learning. :)

I see your sandbox article at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jacob Strader (steamboat). To replace the find-a-grace reference, you want to delete this content: "<ref name="Find a Grave">{{cite web|title=Find A Grave|url=http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=64308357|accessdate=2 March 2013}}</ref>"

Secondly, you want to delete the repeat shortversion that is further below: "<ref name="Find a Grave" />"

And then just add the new reference as you did the previous ones.

I'll do a few small tweaks to your draft, such as putting references after punctuation marks, but I'll leave the rest to you. :)

Pete, I would appreciate your reflections on the new pieces I added today in the OER Community section if you could. I wish I had written down the ideas for other titles, but I was concentrating on pages that were being shown and strategies. I will try to catch the archive when it is up. The class has been quite a challenge and I am thrilled. Kathy is a great partner, she really pushed me to try stuff even when she had already learned the coding. I think you helped build a very safe active community during the class and that has helped me feel like I can participate in WP. One thing I wonder about still is "when is it ok to have inline links to outside web sources?" Based on the comments from the reviewer, Kathy asked me to take all out that were not to WP cites. I will answer in more detail on the Talk:PhET Interactive Simulations page, but on the question about external links: it's true, external links within the body of an article are generally discouraged. In my view this is a pretty minor consideration, and I have resisted the urge to comment on every possible topic of discussion in students' articles; but as you have now learned the hard way, Wikipedians (and I should include myself, in other contexts) can be very particular about details like this. You deleted this article without even notifying me, as one of the most frequent editors, to your objection. There was no reason to delete this article, the competition is notable and has been since 2007! The fact the article has been on wiki for so long surely tells you something about its notability. If you don't believe it is notable than think about this: it is hosted by a club that last year won the Premier League and Community Shield, and the year before won the FA Cup, whereas the corresponding competition held by Arsenal [whom have no notable trophies in this era!] (the Emirates Cup), still has an article! Burba Badge

Hi, Pete, Hope all is well (wherever you are at the moment). New England and New York are in a rain, rain, rain pattern, just like a lot of the country is in a hot (dangerously hot) weather pattern. How do I find out if my article has been accepted? I check P2PU, but have to go through the course page to get to the badges - my P2PU page doesn't show any badges. Can you tell I have a mild case of ADD? Your Reversal of my Admin action

I can understand that my sporadic internet access means that I'm not responding very quickly but I was surprised to see that you reversed my action without further discussion with me. Especially as your contributions to this thread suggest that you are actively supporting Russavia over on Commons and are therefore arguably involved and non-neutral in this matter. In addition, it is patently obvious that Russavia is using his edits to his talkpage to actively solicit edits on the English wikipedia and in my explanation for my action I linked an ANI discussion where that very activity led to a consensus to revoke another user's talkpage access. Undeletion request

Would you mind undeleting File:June 12 2004-billboards of lahore-beauty girl-c.JPG and File:Sharp Billboard (Nicolson Road, Lahore)-c.JPG? See the link that Quadell posted at WP:MCQ#FoP_in_Pakistan — Pakistan has freedom of panorama for things permanently placed in public places, and the links that I've given in response show that billboards count as "permanent" and that we permit things of this sort as long as they're taken in countries with freedom of panorama. If the ANI discussion makes you uncomfortable with the idea of taking any additional admin actions on these images, I'll file a DRV (the ANI means that it shouldn't count as non-controversial for WP:REFUND purposes); should that happen, please don't think of the DRV as a complaint about or rejection of your decision. Thanks. I agree that it's an odd thing to host, so perhaps they should get sent to FFD, but yeah that's not a good reason for deletion without a discussion. Knowing what US law is like, my mind automatically asks "could it be FOP?" whenever I see a copyright-based dispute over an image that shows a copyrightable work in another country, just like I think "could it be PD-US-no notice?" showing a copyrightable work in the USA. I'm not a lawyer, so in general I feel like I need to defer to the wisdom of others on stuff like this. But it does strain my powers of imagination to understand how the FOP laws of another country could impact the copyright status of an image within the US. (And all content on all Wikimedia projects needs to be freely reusable under US law.) Ah, I was wondering about that as I did it -- whether the instructions meant only double quotes, or single quotes too. Thanks for fixing it, and cleaning up the instructions! By the way, the issue that led me to do that is under discussion here: MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist#petition -- perhaps you could take a look at this, I'm still not entirely clear on why your bot caught those links to begin with, and if there's a better way than this whitelist to fix the problem? -Pete (talk) 22:24, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Pete, Came across an interesting species of vandalism at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Valentine%27s_Day_Massacre The History page view shows the vandalism but not the source page. How does that work? How can it be reverted? A number of elements on this article have been vandalized. Pete, I'll be teaching a course on Wikipedia at the same time at my university (starts few days after yours). I wonder if there's a scope for cooperation? I use Prezis, see Wikipedia_talk:School_of_Open_course#Resources_of_interest.3F; perhaps you can find them of some use as supplementary reading for the students? I wonder if it would be useful for us to work on the Prezis together, to incorporate them more into your course? In turn, I wonder if my students could also enroll and benefit from your course. Due to conflicting schedule, I guess they would want to look at Wikipedia:School of Open course self-paced; I see this page is being redesigned? WIKISOO interface question

I'm signed up for the WIKISOO online course that starts next week (many thanks to you and Snarfa in advance!)

After attending the Eyebeam Art + Feminism edit-a-thon on 2/1/14, I'm enthusiastic about learning more about Wikipedia! However, regarding the Blackboard Collaborate interface, I'm having difficulty signing up. It seems that it requires an institutional affiliation to get a response. Not sure if you are the right person to direct this question to.

Disambiguation pages

Hello, Peteforsyth. When you moved Bob Sutton to a new title and then redirected the old title to a disambiguation page, you may not have been aware of WP:FIXDABLINKS, which says:

A code of honor for creating disambiguation pages is to fix all resulting mis-directed links.

Before moving an article to a qualified name (in order to create a disambiguation page at the base name, to move an existing disambiguation page to that name, or to redirect that name to a disambiguation page), click on What links here to find all of the incoming links. Repair all of those incoming links to use the new article name.

It would be a great help if you would check the other Wikipedia articles that contain links to "Bob Sutton" and fix them to take readers to the correct article. Thanks. R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:30, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

GLAM history/structure

I'm afraid the Wikipedia article GLAM (industry sector) is not very good. I was wondering how GLAM got started and who runs it. Is there a decision maker that has authority to make choices on how GLAM is run? Are all the participants hired by the same organization or is it more of a loosely organized group? Did Wikipedians start the initiative or was it you or an early GLAM participant that got it started? How is it structured? I was hoping you might have a few minutes to spare to educate me. @CorporateM:, I'm sorry, I don't quite see what you're getting at. I think maybe you are conflating "GLAM" (an industry sector that's existed for millenia) and the more recent phenomenon of "GLAM-Wiki" (a loose collection of efforts to help GLAM institutions engage effectively with collaboratively-built web sites?) I think you're more interested in the latter -- there's no really quick answer, but I think you'd find most of the answers you want starting at outreach:GLAM. The first Wikipedian in Residence was @Wittylama: at the British Museum, who pretty much made it happen on his own. The idea was first proposed in a 2006 blog post by @Llywrch:, and was reignited during the Wikimedia Strategic Planning process in 2009, which may (?) have been what sparked Liam to pursue the British Museum project. But that's just the barest of outlines...so much has happened since. I hope those pages on Outreach help. -Pete (talk) 21:30, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Redlink on your user page

I notice a redlink on your user page for Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest or some such title. I bring your attention to Native American peoples of Oregon. Obviously, your concept is probably better from an anthropological perspective, particularly if one were to integrate the coastal peoples of today's OR, WA, and BC into a single piece and to kick out the inland peoples for another parallel article. The list on my user page is horribly out of date...I added that particular link long before you started the article, and it reflects my very non-expert perception that the "Pacific Northwest" might be a framework that makes more sense than "Oregon," since the borders of Oregon have only existed very recently from the perspective of Native American history. The entire notion of a "Pacific Northwest" pretty much misses the logical way to categorize the first nations, which is sub-regionally. At least there are published sources following my "state" approach, so it's Wikipedia-kosher. Still, the logical division would be "coastal native american peoples of the pacific northwest" for one; and then some further divisions of inland native american peoples of the pacific northwest on top of that. Probably a split between river-based cultures and plains-based cultures. It's one of those things that has no perfect solution... Carrite (talk) 19:23, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
