I think you would be interested in voting here, especially as there are voices that Halibutt is an anti-German (Russian, etc.) POV-pusher, dispute aggreviator and member of a Polish conspiracy to take over WIki :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 17:53, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your support. It's not a common thing among wikipedians to change their minds. Halibutt 06:04, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. WikiThanks.
Thanks. WikiThanks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the people who took part in my (failed) RfA voting. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! I was also surprised by the amount of people who stated clearly that they do care, be it by voting in for or against my candidacy. That's what Wiki community is about and I'm really pleased to see that it works.
As my RfA voting failed with 71% support, I don't plan to reapply for adminship any more. However, I hope I might still be of some help to the community. Cheers! Halibutt 05:10, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Olessi, you mentioned this to me on my talk page, but I don't think I've had much interaction with him, so I have little to judge on. Is there some area where you remember that he and I have both significantly worked, and that I am forgetting? Apologies, but I work in so many different areas and cross paths with so many Wikipedians, that sometimes I lose track. -- Jmabel | Talk 21:28, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. I don't feel qualified to have an opinion over whether he might be such a POV pusher as to raise a trust issue, because I don't know his edits.
More generally, though, it is odd that some people seem to think that strongly held opinions are an issue in becoming an admin. I can understand someone saying "he/she seems to have violated WP:POINT so he/she shouldn't be an admin", but I don't get the argument "his/her politics are thus and such so he/she shouldn't be an admin" (which, in particular, seemed to be the main issue recently in opposition to User:Ramallite, a West Bank Palestinian who is an excellent contributor).
Maybe we need a fourth question for prospective admins: are there any subject matter areas in which you would consider recusing yourself from using administrative capabilities? -- Jmabel | Talk 17:50, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi
Thanks for the English version of the Christburg page. I found the towns name in the court house records at Willkes Berre, Pa. My grandfather applied to become a US citizen in 1905.

Accusations in Fairway Rock move[edit]

You and I and everyone else who's voted to move Fairway Rock Island to Fairway Rock are being accused by Paul Martin in the history of that article of being Wechselstrom's sockpuppets. —Tox 11:10, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Macedonian! In case you are unaware, Halibutt is going through the administrator vote process. I believe that any input you could provide would be valued. Also, I have taken the liberty to correct Latino to Latina on your user page. Olessi 19:45, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please see comment of your comment on my talk page. Hope to hear from you soon. Macedonian(talk) 06:25, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I do not really remember that I had any experience with Halibutt. So, I can not judge. Any thing that you beleive I shoudl know about him? What is your personal oppinion about him?
Thanks for corecting to latina. I never check my mistakes on the edits. :))
Take care. Macedonian(talk) 06:20, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I personally am not aware of any interactions between you and Halibutt (he primarily writes about the regions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), but, as I have seen your User Name before, I figured it would be better to inform you just in case. He has strong views and has often been seen as stubborn, but at the same time he is one of the most polite and reasonable contributors to Wikipedia. I personally believe that he would not use admin powers in POV disputes, but other users disagree. Olessi 01:01, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
New comments added on my talk page. Please visit. Take care. Macedonian(talk) 14:37, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for considering me, Olessi. I will try to look through the contributions of this user. If I build my personal oppinion about him, I would include in the process. But, I am aware that I have to be very careful. And I will be. I do not want to missinterptet or missjudge anyone's posts. Macedonian(talk) 14:34, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your message[edit]

thanks for pointing that Halibutt to me, sorry if I am responding now I was on vacation :-) I put in my vote. Thanks alot for supporting the vote on Trentino-South Tyrol, it always irritates me when national(istic) users try to push some non-neutral agenda or fight out some conflicts on Wikipedia, this is really not the place to do this. cheers... ps: Greifenturm you say?-) well if you know Harry Potter, you know what it refers to .-) Gryffindor 19:16, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vote on moves[edit]

"I would like to remind you to vote on moves that you have proposed..." Thanks/Danke sehr. I'm just getting the hang of this. I had already moved Podolia because it was 75%-25% but I'll vote myself on others in the future.

Since you seem to be hanging out in that part of the world, I'm writing a page on the Yedisan/Jedisan/Edisan region (between Budjak and Crimea) and wonder if you know if it and have a preference for the primary spelling. LuiKhuntek 20:56, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Powiat/County[edit]

Feel free to help with the County ->Powiat transition. Actually, all (or almost all) existing county articles are already renamed and their unicode is fixed, but many of them retain the old lead with the word county in it. It would be good to fix that, for consistency. The best starting list is: List of powiats in Poland which was throughly reworked by me and Halibutt. Balcer 15:37, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit on Powiat of Czarnków-Trzcianka looks good to me. As to your question about the placement of articles, I am probably the last person to provide you with good advice :). Balcer 22:50, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yedisan[edit]

Regarding naming, I have a slight inclination toward Yedisan. I just added the article and went with Yedisan. Please edit and add. LuiKhuntek 19:58, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to rephrase the mentioning of "Nogai Tartary" and "West Nogai"; please correct it if I misinterpreted your meaning. -- I was unclear to begin with. Tartary was not only a geographical location but was an ethnological (racial) notion, i.e. the area inhabited by Turkic and Mongol peoples. Thus, the Black Sea coast and Crimea that was to become New Russia was called "Little Tartary." Columbia Encyclopedia says "...Siberia long continued to be known as Tartary and the Crimean domains as Little Tartary." I should've put an entry for Little Tartary in first. Tartary/Tatary is a mess now with 2 articles needing a merge. I was planning a merge along with an entry for Little Tartary.

Dubnica nad Váhom[edit]

Hello! Could you take a look at this edit? I had originally added "Dubnicz" as per its mention on the Hungarian wiki, but as I do not speak the language, it is possible I added it incorrectly. Olessi 23:01, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand why that anonymous user deleted it; it's indeed stated in the Hungarian Wikipedia. (By the way, the cz in the name is written today (since about 1920) as c, so the cz form is not a property of the name but of the contemporary Hungarian orthography.) Adam78 23:15, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for looking into that for me. Olessi 06:21, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning your comment on Halibutt's talk, please read Wikipedia:Assume good faith. Unlike Andriy, it was me who contributed most of the article in question, so it was for me and not for NightOnEarth to decide what name it should sit at.--Ghirlandajo 09:06, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

German noticeboard[edit]

Is there one? I cannot find anything at Wikipedia:Regional notice boards. A place to leave a message for many German editors would be quite useful - for example, to discuss stuff like this. At the moment the only thing I can do is ask several German native speakers I know from various edits, like you, Wiglaf or Chris - but it's not really very useful. Having one place for such notices would be much better. What do you think?--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 21:44, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If there was a German noticeboard, I'd ask involved editors to talk to this new user, who seem intent on (re)starting some revert wars. Could you talk to him, or ask somebody else? I have a feeling he is not going to take well to any comments coming from Polish editors :( --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 22:41, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How come that you're so found on Transylvania? Do you have relatives there? Interesting. I want to collaborate with you if you want to. It's interesting the military perspective of history.

Naming conventions[edit]

I've looked at the naming convention discussions, as you suggested. Sinnlos! And to think that all this has been raked over ad infinitum during the past two years! Nevertheless, I'll delve into in detail when I have time off during the holidays.

Thanks for your support on my RfA[edit]

Olessi, I just wish to thank you for your support on my successful RfA. Obviously, you have no problem in contacting me with any issues, and this will not change -- in fact, I hope to help out everyone I humanly can. :-) Happy Holidays! -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. Think out loud 03:46, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it uses map for Chomutov. The cities lie nearby and I reused the map.

I draw all the maps currently in ikipedia and it gets rather boring so I reuse quite often. I use template found on my user page and add red spot, by hand, looking on map in my autoatlas. While not perfect it gives clue.

If you add some maps it would be much welcomed.

  • maps are added into Commons
  • they are put into Commons Category:Maps of Czech Republic
  • I use Microsoft Paint to take an existing map and move the red spot
  • adding one map takes cca 5 minutes (Commons is quite slow)

Regarding box covers[edit]

Just letting you know that box covers are not fair usable unless they are used in an article providing critical commentary on the DVD in question. (Take a look at WP:FAIR... :-( ) Therefore, I'm going through and tagging any non-fair used box covers for deletion. Seats of Saxondom[edit]

Hi,

I've added some comments on the Sălişte talk page about the seats of saxondom. I think you could be aof great help as a german language speaker because most of the infos you could find on the Internet are in German and there are quite a lot of websites about the Transylvanian Saxons and they seem to be well documented. Just run a search on google with Siebenburgen and you'll fing them.

Changes to Subdivisions of the Ottoman Empire[edit]

I notice you have recently edited Subdivisions of the Ottoman Empire. One problem mentioned in the article is that "such a large empire inevitably sees many changes over several centuries, any listing is either a freeze in time or, as below (still incomplete), a compromise concerning overlaps and other alterations." In an attempt to systematize the listing, I made a chart based mainly on Donald Edgar Pitcher’s An Historical Geography of the Ottoman Empire (1972) that is a list of provinces in 1609 (near the height of the Empire’s power). The chart includes Turkish names, dates of foundation, current location, and other notes. I followed this with a list of provinces that disappeared before 1609 and provinces that appeared after 1609. Finally, to reflect the administrative reforms of 1864 and the decline of the Empire, I have a list of provinces in 1877.

This information would remove little of the information currently in the article but would be a reorganization of the article that would change its appearance (e.g., end the Christian/Muslim division of provinces). Because information on this topic is scarce and sometimes contradictory, I wanted to run this by you before posting the changes. Please give comment or objection at User talk:LuiKhuntek or the article's talkpage. Thanks.
