A barnstar for you!

The Writer's Barnstar
Many species of flies. We knew Diptera was a numerous order. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:43, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Unitalicized article titles and a couple other things.

Hi, thanks for all the fly articles you've created. I've noticed some of your articles don't have the title italicized; using a taxobox template will automatically italicize the article title, but only if the binomial is formatted as the template expects it to be. Your unitalicized articles have a space between the binomial and the closing italics that ends up leaving the title unitalicized. I.e. ''Heleomyza rotundicornis '' should be formatted ''Heleomyza rotundicornis''.

Wikipedia's category system for insects is incomplete, but should eventually include categories for most genera. If you're going to create several articles for species in a particular genus, consider creating a category for the genus rather than putting the in a family category.

Minor taxonomic ranks (sub/super) are usually omitted from the taxobox unless the minor rank is between the rank of the taxon discussed in the article and the next major rank. I.e., genus articles might include tribe or subfamily, but not subphylum. Species articles might include subgenus, but not subfamily. There are some exceptions when minor ranks happen to be very important in understanding the classification of an organism. Including subphylum Hexapoda isn't very useful in articles on fly species/genera; suborder might be more relevant if any minor rank is included.

Thanks again for all your work. Plantdrew (talk) 20:54, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Actually, I chose a poor example for the italic problem. Heteromyza rotundicornis had Heleomyza rotundicornis in the binomial section of the taxobox, which I didn't notice earlier. An extraneous space is the usual culprit when your articles aren't showing an italic title, but in this case, in addition to the space, the binomial didn't match the article title, which also causes italics to fail. As far as I can tell, this species should be placed in Heteromyza, so I changed the taxobox. But you know more about fly taxonomy than me; if you have sources that are placing it in Heleomyza then the article title needs to be changed. Plantdrew (talk) 22:58, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

Actenicerus sjaelandicus

Hi, just been going through recently created articles and adding project tags and language links. There's actually already a Wikipedia article under Actenicerus siaelandicus - is it possible that they're the same species? Maybe this should be redirected to that? Sorry, I don't know beetles well. Blythwood (talk) 23:48, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Ah, one other - looking up Cartodere bifasciatus, I find few sources. Google suggests try looking at Cartodere bifasciata (which is how nlwiki calls it) and some websites suggest it's sometimes placed in a different genus as Aridius bifasciata. I don't know what the right answer is, though. Blythwood (talk) 00:05, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Greetings, Merry Christmas ...

Greetings Robert! What luck that I should find something written by you today at Ferdinand Albin Pax (1858-1942). I was trying to separate the work of the father and the son Ferdinand Albert Pax (1885-1964) and I have trouble with this note and have just managed to look up the Parnassius paper and the trouble with it is that in 1915 both senior and junior were at Wroclaw (Breslau) but I am beginning to think that the father specialized in botany alone and that the zoological names are after the son. Merry Christmas! Shyamal (talk) 06:31, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

And a happy new year too

Greetings again! Today a friend got me to look up a major collector in southern India - Dr T.V. Campbell - who I believe is Thomas Vincent Campbell who worked as a missionary doctor not far from where I live. The trouble is I have no solid evidence (beyond the fact that many of the insect specimens come from Chikkaballapur, where the doctor worked) to suggest that the collector and the doctor are the same person. Given his Irish links, I wonder if you might be able to find anything more. Shyamal (talk) 13:08, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

I think the problem can be easily solved if the correspondence archives of Edward Albert Butler can be located. I have sent out enquiries to the NHM. Should also try Norwich Museum as they seem to have got some of his Coleoptera. Shyamal (talk) 04:50, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello. I have deleted this page, which was not ready for mainspace and did not have a proper title. You should develop this article as a draft. Don't try to make it a regular article until it is ready, with a fully developed article and references. You should work on it at Draft:Eduard Enslin, not your current draft at Draft:Enslin (entomologist). If you wish I will move the draft page to the proper title for you. Just ask. -- MelanieN (talk) 21:00, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

One other thing: I notice that Draft:Enslin (entomologist) still exists. You might want to ask to have it deleted. You can do that by typing {{Db-u1}} at the top of the page. -- MelanieN (talk) 21:33, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Adonis blue

With this edit on 26 October 2019, you added a large chunk of information to the article Adonis blue. At first I thought it was a copyright violation, but on investigation, I think the source for the copied text was probably one of the works of Adalbert Seitz, likely published sufficiently long ago to be in the public domain. That would make this a case of plagiarism rather than a copyright violation. When copying compatibly licensed material, attribution is required as explained on this page. Please add a reference to the article for the copied text. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:10, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. The article came to my attention because one of the images is going to be "Picture of the day" on 25th May. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:01, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Dear Robert, hope you are keeping well! I think you will enjoy some of the Hazards articles I have linked here. I think this covers nearly all that was republished in his book but for 2 articles. Lovely of the late T B Larsen to have personally contributed a picture of himself to Wikimedia Commons. Shyamal (talk) 10:03, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Quick note about copying from public domain sources

Hi! I noticed recently that you've copied from a public domain source in this edit. Copying from public domain sources is perfectly fine copyright-wise, and it is encouraged to help build our encyclopedia. However, when doing so, we are required not only to cite the PD source, but also to acknowledge that the source was copied from in the text of our article. There are a few templates that can help do this for you, such as {{PD-inline}}, and these sorts of templates can be inserted between the relevant <ref></ref> tags so as to satisfy this requirement. Happy editing! — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 21:08, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
