Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello NielsenGW! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 4 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 941 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Tortricidae[edit]

Hello Nielsen! Seeing you have been quite active adding moth genera in the past, I was wondering if you would be interested in helping out creating tortricidae genera. The site http://www.tortricidae.com/ list all genera and species of this family. I did one subfamily plus some (I guess around a hundred or so), but there is a lot to do still. If you could help me out that would be great..! Ruigeroeland (talk) 13:32, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I honestly wish I could be of some help, but with the wedding coming up and reading I have to get done, I will probably have to minimize my Wiki-tivity, especially since I've been trying to supplement the giant Geometridae family with FUNET data. The folks over at T@RTS seem to have a pretty good setup, though. I will do what I can. NielsenGW (talk) 12:51, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, missed your reply.. No problem! Just thought I might give it a shot.. :) Have a great wedding (I assume you are getting married yourself?) and good luck with the Geometridae. You love to pick the biggest families don't you.. :) Ruigeroeland (talk) 12:52, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE[edit]

Hi, thanks for all your hard work at WP:GOCE. I see you put in a lot of hard work on Elephanta Caves. Looks good to me. Just remember to put {{GOCE|user=YourName|date=edit_date}} on the article's talk page, so that there's a record of your edit. Cheers and keep up the great work! :-) -- S Masters (talk) 03:26, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Family Guy (season 5)[edit]

Hello, I noticed you recently joined the Guild of Copy Editors, and was hoping you could help copyedit the article Family Guy (season 5), as it is currently a featured list candidate. I'd appreciate any help you could provide, as any possible improvements are welcome. Gage (talk) 20:18, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Make it a formal request on the GOCE Request page, and I'll get to as soon as possible. NielsenGW (talk) 21:38, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I've added a request. Thank you for your help. Gage (talk) 23:16, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please copyedit the article? Dhumavati is also listed in the Guild's request list. See Talk:Dhumavati/GA1. Thanks. --Redtigerxyz Talk 13:59, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm on it. NielsenGW (talk) 14:00, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother you again. But the Mohini article faces the same problem as Dhumavati, prose issues. Can you please take a look? --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:50, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It may be a couple of days, but I promise you, I will get to it. NielsenGW (talk) 17:21, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:13, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'm going to a complete re-write to clear all of the issues with this article. User:NielsenGW/Mohini will be the sandbox until I'm ready to import into the mainspace. I will be sure to have it done by the deadline. NielsenGW (talk) 17:23, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Any improvement is OK with me. My only concern with copyediting is sometimes the meaning of the sentences change and references are moved. To avoid this (I can check if it is happening and edit freely), I suggest you directly edit Mohini mainspace. Constructive editing is not considered a violation of the GA stability criterion. Don't worry about the deadline much, we can request the reviewer for a day or two more if needed. Thanks again. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:59, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I see you are doing a great job at Mohini, but there are some things I need to to inform me, about the Amrita section. The original Mahabharata (MBh) did not have a full description of Mohini (limited to two-three stanzas) (per refs in original version), later versions have the expanded the tale, the current version does not establish this. The mention is Ramayana is necessary as Ramayana and Mbh are the core sources of Hindu mythology. Bhagavata Purana is considered the most authoritative scripture for the devotees of Vishnu, whose avatar is Mohini. It has most comprehensive account of Mohini. Thanks for putting so much work into the article--Redtigerxyz Talk 05:10, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chapter 17 of Adi Parva is considered the first appearance, chapters 18, 19 expansions. IMO, this needs to be clarified. --Redtigerxyz Talk 14:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, there's a reference note pointing the reader to the proper section now. NielsenGW (talk) 14:22, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Amrita section is looking good, but the GA hold period is coming to an end soon within 2 days (on 19th). If you need some more time, please let me know. I will request the reviewer. --Redtigerxyz Talk 16:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I'll need more time, just clarity in parsing through all the source material. NielsenGW (talk) 18:00, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've finished looking over the article. NielsenGW (talk) 21:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Special Barnstar
For your hard work in helping make Elephanta Caves, Dhumavati and Mohini (all nominated by me) GAs. Without your copyedits, they never would be GAs. I first thought I should give you the Copyeditor's Barnstar, but then realized you were more than just a copyeditor. For going the extra mile in Mohini, where you reorganized the sections, condensed the information and even added the references. This is not what you regularly find copyeditors doing. Thanks a lot for improving these articles. Redtigerxyz Talk 16:21, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. It is definitely appreciated. NielsenGW (talk) 18:04, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hate to bother you again so soon, but if you have the time, could you look at Big Man on Hippocampus? I added a formal request on the Guild page a couple of days ago, but have not had any interest shown by any members. The article is currently a good article candidate, and needs to be copyedited as soon as possible, as it is currently on hold. Gage (talk) 02:53, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll get on it. NielsenGW (talk) 02:54, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have you completed the copyedit? I noticed you didn't add the Guild template to the talk page, so I just wanted to make sure. Gage (talk) 16:13, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request to copy edit Indiana class battleship[edit]

Hello, I was going to post this in the request a copy edit section when I saw you did a few articles on battleships recently, so I wondered if you were interested in another.

Indiana class battleship is currently at peer review and I plan on submitting it for GA class after that. One of the comments was that the article needed a copy edit, so I would like to getone before I submit it. I tried to fix most of the mistakes, but neither my English nor my knowledge of the MOS is perfect so there are bound to be some left. Many thanks if you could help me out, but feel free to refuse if you don't want to. Yoenit (talk) 19:33, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jack Benny[edit]

Thanks for the improvements to the Jack Benny article. Please look at the tweaks I made to your revisions. Also, would you please look at the Mary Livingston article? I changed the spelling of her birth name to "Sadie" from "Sadye" per Irving Fein's Jack Benny biography. I have seen both spellings. Would you happen to know which one is correct?Sandcherry (talk) 22:37, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, there is currently major disputes as to the sentence structure, grammar, etc. in the plot section of this article. I was hoping that you, as a neutral observer, could provide the article, but primarilly the plot section, with a thorough copyedit in order to resolve such issues, and prevent further, what I beliee to be incorrect, assertions on the part of several new and IP users. Thanks. Gage (talk) 00:24, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE Newsletter[edit]

GOCE backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now reached the halfway point, and here's what has happened so far.

  • Requests Report - Good news! The number of special requests waiting to be edited has been reduced drastically, with almost all of the remaining items having editors committed to getting them done. Good work, people!
  • Target Report - ɳorɑfʈ's initial target of reducing the backlog of articles for copy edit turned out to be unrealistic insane, so a new target was set: we hope to reduce the to backlog to less than 7,500 items in the queue by the end of the month. The number in the queue was 7,950 as of close of business yesterday.
    • If we "concentrate our firepower" we can wipe out Jan, Feb, and March 2008, meaning the drive will have cleared four months off the backlog queue. Please consider copyediting from one of these months.
  • Rewards Report - We now have some clear leaders on the board in all three Gold Star categories, and many people have qualified for the various barnstars. It is not too late to participate, as it takes just 2,000 words (pre-edit) to qualify for a barnstar! Don't wait! Start participating today. Remember, the ultimate winner is Wikipedia.
  • Notice to Participants - For those who have indicated that you will be working on certain articles on the drive page in your respective tally box, please ensure that you complete these copyedits as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for your participation so far!

What is several hours?[edit]

Dear Nielsen, The new template on the top of the Kubrick article saying it is undergoing a major copyedit by the Guild of WP editors explicitly states to remove the template if no edits have "been made in the last several hours". What is several hours in this context? Less than a day? Three or four days? Inquiring WP editors (or at least myself) would like to know. Cheers,--WickerGuy (talk) 02:13, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I was inded going to get to the article yesterday, but I got side-tracked. I will edit the article today and remove the tag once complete. If it's still there tomorrow, feel free to remove it yourself. NielsenGW (talk) 11:45, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kubrick Edits[edit]

Excellent job editing the Kubrick article. Thank you. (I did correct a couple of mistakes you made- one subtle and one not so subtle). I'm curious though about your (or WP's) philosophy on hyphenated words. Standard dictionaries state that virtually all of these words can be written either hyphenated or not. "Cowritten" and "co-written" are both valid. This is also true of all the other words you hyphenatied. Is one of them more common in Britain and the other in America? Do you think hyphens enhance readability (on a small screen)? Does the WP:MOS say something about it one way or the other? Just curious. Regards, --WickerGuy (talk) 16:05, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My philosophy regarding differs slightly from WP's.
The [Wikipedia:MOS#Hyphens|MoS]] says (regarding hyphens), "There is a clear trend to join both elements in all varieties of English (subsection, nonlinear), particularly in American English. British English tends to hyphenate when the letters brought into contact are the same (non-negotiable, sub-basement) or are vowels (pre-industrial), or where a word is uncommon (co-proposed, re-target) or may be misread (sub-era, not subera). American English reflects the same factors, but tends to close up without a hyphen when possible. Consult a good dictionary, and see WP:ENGVAR."
I tend to introduce hyphens when the word being "prefix-ed" is non-standard, including "co-writer" or "co-produced". Since the article had a decidely British slant (as far as spelling is concerned), I adopted a more British attitude when copyediting.
Hope this helps. NielsenGW (talk) 17:04, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up[edit]

Thanks very much to all who helped with the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive. We were very close to meeting our target of 7,500 articles remaining in the backlog. Our most shining success is the incredible reduction in the backlog of Special Requests. That part of the project saw a drop from 62 articles in the queue, some dating back to February of 2009, down to a stunning THREE, all of which were being edited at the close of the drive. The Special Requests page will now be a great resource for people looking to tidy up their article in advance of a GA or FA nomination, instead of a place where articles go to die.

Moving forward

GOCE backlog elimination drive chart up to 31 May

The drive has not only forced a great leap forward in reducing the backlog. It has helped promote the Guild, and led to a greater awareness of the level of vigilance required to keep the backlog manageable. Ideas such as charts, graphs, and barnstars helped motivate editors, and meeting other users helped quell any feelings gnomish editors may have had in the past that they were toiling all alone. Keep up the good work people!!

Thank you[edit]

Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. Once again, thanks for your support! You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 00:42, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
