Carrion Fields article

I may know what this anonymous user is on about; the Carrion Fields article was deleted by consensus way back in 2005 due to a lack of notability. This was around the same time a similar article was also up for deletion, and at the bottom half of this discussion page references can still be found to the initial deletion of the Carrion Fields article. Apparently, someone has re-created it since then, yet indeed has failed to address any of the issues which caused the original article to be deleted. Malik047 (talk) 16:05, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Addendum: I've found a more recent deletion endorsal in the January 14, 2007 archive. It appears that this article has been deleted several times already, but was covertly re-added to Wikipedia every time. Malik047 (talk) 16:12, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Brilliant detective work! I was thrown because the most recent article had not deletion history. I've now deleted it per G4. Nancy talk 16:21, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Reconsideration of Geoffrey Bell (broadcaster).

Hi Nancy,

I want to see if you had viewed the new information on the page [1]

I think there are many points which have not been addressed and significant information has been overlooked. I also think there are double standards going on. There are other lesser known New Zealand television personalities on here who do have pages, without nearly as many sources.

Some examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarke_Gayford http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drew_Neemia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooke_Howard-Smith http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Peebles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dai_henwood

What more do you need to approve a simple page?

Many thanks

The first thing you need to do is stop creating sockpuppet accounts - they are so obvious that it isn't even worth bothering to run a checkuser for confirmation; I do hope that you are better at presenting than you are at working undercover. With regard to your (auto)biography, the community decided via a deletion discussion that you do not meet the criteria for inclusion laid out at WP:ENTERTAINER and as all subsequent recreations of the article have been essentially identical to the version which was discussed they have been removed under speedy deletion criteria G4. I happen to have been responsible for performing most of the deletions because I happen to have the titles watch-listed and so am alerted when they are recreated however if it wasn't me it would have been some other admin soon enough. I have seen nothing yet to persuade me that the situation regarding whether you meet Wikipedia's notability requirements has changed in the last three months, and, if it does then I am sure that someone independent will be along and write a qualifying article - hell I might even do it myself. Deletion of 4WARD entry.

Hi Nancy.

The article about the European Research project 4WARD was deleted due to copyright infringement. However, there was (at the bottom of the page) a notice where it is stated that reproduction was authorized.

Below is a copy of the text:

Hi there Javier. I'm afraid that the copyright situation on Wikipedia is slightly more complicated as any text herein has to be released under GFDL which basically means that the original copyright holder relinquishes all rights to the text and must allow for it to be reused, altered and reproduced without restriction. Whilst the notice you link to is quite wide ranging I am not sure if it goes quite far enough. The official explanation is at WP:COPY. That aside it is often the case (and would be in this one I think) that cut and paste text from other websites are problematic on Wikipedia for other reasons - for example they are likely not to be neutral, to be written in an unencyclopaedic tone, are often promotional and are likely to be a primary source. This is why I usually recommend that rather than go to the trouble of jumping through all the hoops necessary to release text to GFDL it is better to simply write an article in your own words remembering that you must show why the topic is notable by reference to multiple, independent, reliable secondary sources. Hope this helps, kind regards, Nancy talk 08:30, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

RES Alumni Organisation

Hello,

I'm new to Wikipedia and would like to add an entry about RES Alumni Organisation. I keep having problems with my article being deleted and redirected to the RES School entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RES_-_The_School_for_Renewable_Energy_Science).

I based my entry on other Alumni Organisation that have Wiki entries: - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_School_of_Economics_Alumni_Association - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIESEC_Alumni_International

The article is referenced, I removed links to the blog and stated the mission behind RESAO. What is the problem?

All the best,

Tmiklis (talk) 13:01, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

The problem is that the article does not indicate why the organisation is notable in Wikipedia terms - it needs to meet the standards laid out at WP:ORG. As an alumni organisation for a institution that itself is not yet three years old it's not really surprising that RESAO is not (yet) notable. When an article does not meet the notability standard it is usually deleted but in this case where there is a parent article it is often redirected to the parent. This is particularly common in the case of student clubs and organisations which are left as redirects to the institution they are a part of. Hope this helps to explain, kind regards, Nancy talk 13:19, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

I've read the Wikipedia standard thoroughly and there's nothing there about the three years time limit. As for the "subject of significant coverage in secondary sources", RESAO was covered in Icelandic media as well as others. In May there will be a publication about us in "Popular Science". We work on international and local level. For example now we cooperate with the 'selector festival' in Kraków to prepare action that will raise awareness of people to enviromental and energy issues. Marianne Maksirisombat

I disagree about the deletion of Marianne Maksirisombat, and I think I made a decent argument on the talk page, however I don't disagree enough to create a fuss. If I had more sources now I'd have added them, however I think it's likely there will be more news articles in the future and I don't want to have to start over from scratch. I'm not sure how long deleted pages are saved for, so could I get a copy of what the page was so I can hang on to it for if/when their are more sources? Vicarious (talk) 03:55, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Google maps

I have permission from the Google program managers responsible for the April Fools jokes to post this content i.e. jokes and images. I can post the email giving me permission if desired. My interest is that the Google maps Cadie jokes were pretty funny and clever, but the maps feature intermittently comes and goes. I think the description needs a stable home.

In case disclosure in necessary, I'm a Google employee, but I was not involved with the April Fools jokes, and was as surprised as everyone else. I thought this year's Cadie joke was really good, and worth documenting permanently, especially with the popularity Google can garner. I obtained permission before making these modifications. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Weihaw (talkcontribs) 07:04, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi there Weihaw. Wikipedia has a process for people to donate copyrighted material - for legal reasons we have to make sure that the person donating has the appropriate permissions. You say you are a proxy for a Google program manager but does even that program manager have the authority to release Google copyrighted material to GDFL, and further does s/he understand the implications of that? If you are sure that you have the legal authority to proceed with this process then the page at WP:DCP explains how to donate material. Best of luck and kind regards, Nancy talk 07:15, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

B-Money

I was hoping to have you reconsider the deletion of the page about "B-Money." He's one of the most famous people in Provo, Utah and all of the students at BYU love him. If it helps, he has YouTube videos that have over 100,000 views--that ought to demonstrate that he's more than just a random person. If you ask most students here about him they will have had an encounter and a funny story to tell. It's just part of student life here at BYU.

So I was just hoping you'd reconsider. I know there have been articles about him in the paper and other authoritative sources. I was just wondering if you could give me some time to gather that information so we can have an interesting page for people to look at.

John Kelly (artist)

Hello,

You deleted my page on John Kelly, the Australian artist. The essay I uploaded was written by Sean Kelly (no relation to John) and you found the article on the internet and assumed I had simply copied it. Sean Kelly in fact gave me permission to use the essay on Wikipedia. I wanted to use it as it fully and clearly details John Kelly's interesting career.

Please let me know why this is not allowed to be on Wikipedia. The essay was Sean Kelly's own original work and he allowed me to use it this capacity.

Hi, why you keep deleting my page? You say "No indication that the article may meet guidelines for inclusion", but I don't know what you mean by that! Please explain me what to do! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ar-de-rocker (talkcontribs)

Hi there. I only deleted it once! The article has been deleted becuase there is no indication that it may meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines and more specifically the notability guidelines for music. Kind regards, Nancy talk 16:36, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry I did not realise that English is not your first language - I will try and keep it simple. If you look on the page WP:MUSIC you will find the list of things which a band needs to have done in order to be allowed a Wikipedia page. Unless you can show that Main Dish have done these things, the article will be deleted. Hope this helps, kind regards, Nancy talk 16:44, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
I see... But I don't agree with this, so any musical artist that isn't recognized in the major scene doesn't have the right to have an article in wikipedia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ar-de-rocker (talkcontribs) 16:50, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Ok thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ar-de-rocker (talkcontribs) 16:56, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I have one more question, even the fact that the band only release their albums via online, for free download in the website Jamendo that is one of the most important websites of today, that doesn't make the band deserving a place in wikipedia? Well, some bands are now releasing online albums and maybe they don't want to go to majors or indie labels... maybe they want to stay independent... like Nine Inch Nails or Radiohead... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ar-de-rocker (talkcontribs) 17:01, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Patricia Cloherty page

Dear Nancy,

You have blocked me from editing page with information about Patricia Cloherty. The reason was “edit war”.

Unfortunately, the information that appears on Wikipedia at the moment is false and needs to be edited. Please note that Ms. Cloherty is a well-known professional. For her crystal reputation and experience she was elected to the Board of NYSE.

Patricia’s profile as it appears at WIkipedia right now has numerous errors, namely:

1. Patricia M. Cloherty (born 1942) is a venture capitalist, and was the Chairman & CEO of Delta Private Equity Partners. – false Patricia Cloherty is Chairman and CEO of Delta Private Equity Partners as you can see from the company’s website (http://dpep.com/eng/who-we-are/team/index.wbp?team.root-node-id=982a0bf0-8e22-4bf7-8658-bb767b6d2edd)

2. DPEP manages not only The U.S. Russia Investment Fund but also Delta Russia Fund. Same website.

3. In an interview in [1]Private Equity International in December 2005, Cloherty stated that her track record for investing in Russia was 1.2 times multiple on capital invested which included 14 write-offs. – the quoted numbers are taken out the context. She said that in 2005 with the reference to 2004. The other user (Happy225) states them as of 2009, which is wrong.

4. Two notable exceptions were DeltaBank and DeltaCredit, under the leadership of James Cook, which had returns of 2735% IRR and 132% IRR respectively. The two above deals were completed in 2005 and November 2004 respectively, while James Cook was fired from the company in January 2004 and he has nothing to do with the deals.

We believe that Wikipedia is a valuable source of information so it must provide its visitors with true information. We would appreciate if you could edit Patricia’s profile or let us do it. We would also be grateful if you could block user Happy225 from further vandalizing.

Thank you in advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lilu123 (talkcontribs) 08:26, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Lilu123, I am not quite sure what is going on at the Patricia Cloherty page but I have just had to block Happy225 for edit warring as soon as the protection expired and there is also an IP who keeps adding copyrighted material to the page. The page has been protected for a further week and in the meantime I have added some references (although they are primary sources and so need backing up with some more independent citations) and removed any contorversial material which could not be backed up - Wikipedia is quite rightly rather strict regarding biographies of living people. I appears that you have some kind of connection with Ms Cloherty and so I would ask you to look at our guidelines around conflict of interest and whilst this is not to discourage your editing of the page you should be extra aware of the need to only add verifiable, objective information backed up with citations to reliable sources. Kind regards, Nancy talk 20:31, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

BrokeNCYDE

The page for the band BrokeNCYDE keeps getting deleted, but it would make a valid page. They are a pretty well known band, they have played on tour with bands like Every Avenue and Breathe Carolina, and they are scheduled to play at warped tour this year. They are also referenced in many other Wikipedia pages. They're page was deleted because it was considered insignificant or something but they are a very valid band. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Voldin (talkcontribs) 06:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm sure that BrokeNCYDE exist and that they are a great band, unfortunately that is not enough for Wikipedia which demands that bands meet the criteria laid down at WP:MUSIC. The specific reasons for deletion are explained in summary in the deletion log and in detail at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/BrokeNCYDE. Kind regards, Nancy talk 17:46, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Deleted Articles - Anael Tremblay and Bradfield Wiltse

I am still working on making these articles suitable. Believe me, these are not intended for advertisement so much as they are intended to provide as much information as possible.

Anyway, I have a question about "reliable sources" for notability.

These artists have been making albums since 1995, and have enjoyed some pretty moderate success as measured in the business. I do sort of know the composer, but as a fan and only through email exchange over this past year. The thing is, a lot of their notability material is tied up in trade mags and market listings (for instance, placing #1 one week on Amazon's New Age list, and being in the top ten of iTunes downloads - there is no place to actually verify this online or in any printed material; and being written about in trade mags that have since gone out of print - no way to look at it NOW to verify the source...)

Anyway, I am working to make this entry acceptable. Do you have any knowledge about whether these tear pages I am able to use from the artists themselves (their own collection of their media coverage) qualify as reference material, despite the fact that they are not widely available materials?

Also, does this sort of collection count as a "reliable source"? http://apsismusic.com/2007/index.htm (the press kit)

- or does it disqualify it that it exists on the page of the artist, even though it is a collection of other people's reviews and interviews?

Thanks! Usagi Jeshika (talk) 17:22, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Once Theatre Company page

Dear Nancy,

Just writing to question your deletion of the Once Theatre Company page. You state in your own information that you want to see good, verifiable sources referring to the importance of the group in question. The article contained just such a source - a review which was published in the Richmond and Twickenham Times newspaper and several other newspapers in the West London area. It also contained a link to the full article on the newspaper's web site. The review clearly indicated that the company and its work were significant. Just wondering why this was not deemed sufficient?

Yours Peter Langdon Plangdon1 (talk) 13:31, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there Peter. I'm not sure whether you are familiar with our notability guidelines for organisations - they can be found at WP:ORG. I recommend you read the whole page for yourself but in a nutshell an organisation is considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources. I've done my own research and I can't find any thing which would indicate that this was the case - a local paper reviewing a local play is not quite what we are looking for here; indeed reviews, like listings, are generally considered trivial coverage and especially when the subject of the review is the production not the company. Rather we a looking for something like articles in the Sunday Times and The Guardian on the cultural impact that Once has had. I also notice that you have the same name as someone mentioned in the article as a co-founder and I am presuming that you are one and the same. Whilst creating articles on topics that you are closely associated with is not outright banned it is strongly discouraged as we recognise that this may make it very difficult for you, as the author, to be neutral and present an objective view. A good rule of thumb is that if a topic is truely notable then it is almost certain that an uninvolved editor will be along soon enough and create an article about it. Hope this helps to explain, kind regards Nancy talk 13:54, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

User:Alan Liefting

Hi Nancy. You correctly declined speedy deletion requests by User:Alan Liefting : [2], [3]. These are not the only articles with nonsense speedy deletion requests by this user, e.g. [4], [5]. In [6] he is decorating an article with four tags, the tag "uncategorised" is wrong as the article is already categorized. In [7] he doubt the notability - for a person winnig a gold medal in a world championship. Is this vandalism or just collateral damage? --Ilion2 (talk) 09:13, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Please do not overlook this. --Ilion2 (talk) 16:38, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay Ilion2, things sometimes get lost on this page. I've had a look at Alan's contributions and they are not without a certain amount of problems - of the sort you have indicated here - and this has been raised by multiple editors on his talk page. I would not however go so far as to characterise them as vandalism, rather I think that he is editing in good faith but is somewhat over-enthusiastic and hasty; probably he just needs to slow down a bit. Looking at my deletions, I have probably deleted one of his nominations for every one I have declined - 50% is a pretty poor hit rate and this has been raised with him on his talk. I don't think anything would be served by me pitching in there too at this point however I will be keeping an eye on his edits, and particularly his speedy nominations for the next week or so. Flint Rogues

I see that you are going to keep deleting my article about the Flint Rogues RFC. I will be sending you plenty of other wikipedia about rugby articles of clubs that are posted in wikipedia. This is absolutely unreasonable my club's page gets taken down but other clubs who have made lesser contributions to the sport are allowed to stay on wikipedia. If you take ours down then logic should dictate that you will have to take the others down as well. Most of their citations are the same as the ones used by the Flint Rogues, in fact most do not have anything at all. Some even refer to their club websites as references. If that's the case, I can make that happen as well. I guess if a club is not the South Africa Springboks or New Zealand All Blacks, they are unworthy of being posted in wikipedia. I will be sure to send many other pages to you for deletion and if they are not, then it will be obvious that my club's page is being targeted unfairly.

In regards to you comments about neutrality, I have a MA in history and am working on a PhD in the same field. I am pretty sure that qualifies me to have the ability to write neutrally about my club while being affiliated with the club at the same time. Your reasoning for that makes no sense as an author generally produces the best work about a topic they have knowledge of and are passionate about. At no time in the article do I state that the Flint Rogues are the be all and end all of rugby in Michigan and the US but the fact remains that the club is recognized as a leader and champion of the sport in Michigan and the Midwest region. I am sorry that the Midwest Rugby Territory and USA Rugby do not state this on their websites but the fact that the club is well sponsored by a major corporation and is in its 38th year of existence speak for itself in this regard.

Jasonschilling6 (talk) 14:50, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Jasonschilling6

Jason, I have already explained on your talk page what the notability criteria are and what you need to do to proceed - i.e. create a qualifying article in your userspace for review (being sure to avoid further copyright violation). I would respectfully suggest that your time be better spent in that endeavour than here on my talk. Not sure what else to say. Nancy talk 15:12, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea of what copy right violations you are talking about. The club logo and uniform are property of the club and are therefore eligible for use. The Budwesier and flag logos used in the article were taken from wikipedia, so I would assume that they were uploaded legally. If the logos are club property and loaded appropriately, there should be no copyright violations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasonschilling6 (talkcontribs) 18:53, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

The copyvio (which was repeatedly removed from the article) was the "history" section which was copied verbatim from a club programme. Nancy talk 08:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Just to fire in one here (apologies to Nancy), please note that if you release your website text under the GFDL you cannot revoke that release. It also means all your text can be used by anyone in any format they like (website, printed media etc) as long as they comply with the GFDL. So think very hard about wether you want to release all your website text to the whole world before doing so. Pedro :  Chat  07:20, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Pedro, good point. It is also worth saying that often people expend a great deal of time and trouble jumping through the copyright release hoops only to find that the text they have released is unencyclopaedic and/or the resultant article does not meet Wikipedia's notability standards and so the text has been released (permanently) to GFDL for no gain - it is often easier and more effective just to write a short article from scratch in your own words. Hello Nancy, Thank you for your message.

There is particular reason for my username, but i have always interested in the InstantAtlas software, so I thought i could just the company as the username. But since that is not very suitable, i am happy to change to another username. Would that be ok? could you provide me some guidance on how i could do that please.

About listing my website

Dear Nancy,

I was trying to add my website on external link section on wikipedia. I am new on this stuff so simply checked link and added my website. But, it is deleted after some time. I thought that it was deleted by some guy who has already links for their website to reduce competition. Now, I came to knew I am not qualified. I accept it if it is due to advertisement on it but what about the following which are already listed on the TOMATO Page.

http://tomatoesweb.com/

http://www.growyourtomatoes.com/

http://www.geochembio.com/biology/organisms/tomato/

These sites are really disgusting over mine. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. If there are paid listing??

Patricia Cloherty

Dear Nancy: I was blocked from updating the Patricia Cloherty page and do not understand why this was done. I was updating the information to include an article which appeared in Private Equity Online (April 22) which referenced Delta Private Equity being merger with United Financial Group. Patricia Cloherty was the CEO of Delta but was replaced following the takeover by UFG. For some reason, someone keeps changing the page with out of date information. Hello...

...Can you give an opinion on this in relation to this? Thanks!  Frank  |  talk  16:49, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Mmmmmn, interesting one. A few sentences are definitely pure copyvio and much of the rest I would say treads a fine line between plagarism and copyvio - it's so close to the original as to probably still be the latter & from a user who really should know better. I won't have time to do anything with it until this evening but I'd be inclined to delete the whole thing as a copyvio and recreate as a stub. No comment on notability! Patricia Cloherty entry

Nancy, I'm the original poster of what started as a stub on Patricia Cloherty, and frankly I am puzzled by all the fuss over this entry. I wrote she was internationally known-- well she was appointed by President Clinton and awarded the Russian Medal of Honor so this was well documented, not opinion. She has now left Delta and has a new position as can be verified here -- big deal. I would update it, but why bother, I am trying to help, not engage in a fight. Look at the original stub -- this was an attempt to create information on a notable woman, nothing more, nothing less. Anyway, the entry should be updated by someone. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pfrishauf (talkcontribs) 21:36, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Patricia Cloherty was fired from her position at Delta Private Equity and is no longer working there. This is factual information which has been widely reported in the press. She was not awarded the Russian Medal of Honor (it does not exist). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.141.77.13 (talk) 19:52, 8 June 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of page

I was just wondering why the page of "Fahad Shiftra" was deleted for being a hoax? I had many mathematicians and scientists come along and give it the nod of approval. I had regulary been asked for the relevant journals and papers that the sections had been published in, these where then checked and verified by the wikipedia editors. So I'm obviously a bit confused why it was deleted without any notice and I am obviously confused as to the reason the hoax conclusion was reached

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anterior1 (talkcontribs) 13:42, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Nancy - don't know if you saw the Abingdon Lock discussions, but can I suggest one of your diplomatic welcomes to an editor in need of a bit of positive support and steering. Regards Motmit (talk) 10:37, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Dearest Motmit, how the devil are you? So sorry it has taken such a long time to reply I've been rather neglecting Wikipedia lately - I recently started a new job and it has been rather all-consuming. And then of course any spare time has been spent on the river taking advantage of the weather - treating every sunny day as if it were the last. Have also been waving enthusiastically at every passing skiff just in case it's you!
I'd missed the Abingdon Lock photo discussion - glad it reached an amicable resolution & I've just left a note on Sean's talk page which amongst other things points him towards the list of Thames article needing photos - never know he might have a whole stash. Patricia Cloherty

Hi Nancy,

I put some discussion on the talk page for Patricia Cloherty. I am fairly new. Could you please take a moment and advise if I am off base with this? Another editor is deleting content I am certain is valid and inserting content which is un-sourced and with a negative bias. I think the article should stand; I don't know how to proceed so I left a small rant there ;-( Thanks and Regards, Cgettings (talk) 16:01, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi there Cgettings. What you did at Patricia Cloherty was quite right. As you have probably seen from the edit history that page has been unstable for some time with someone (I'm sure it is only one person) persistently deleting sourced content and/or adding unsourced POV; it has even on occasion descended into an edit war with another editor who seems to be closely connected with Ms Cloherty (may even be Ms Cloherty....). I have it on my watch list but have only infrequently been on Wikipeida recently so it is good to know that someone else is keeping an eye too. I have left a note for the IP regarding removal of sourced material and if the problem starts up again (it has been relatively quiet for a month or so) I will semi-protect the page (again!). Kind regards, Nancy talk 05:57, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Nancy. I see the wikipedia emphasis on consensus so I had also put the same note on two other administrators who had contributed to the article. One of them, KillerChihuahua, just did put a semi block on the page but KC noted the sneaky vandalism was coming from a registered user, sometimes while logged in, sometimes not -- so the semi block might not do it. In any case we will stay tuned. thank you and regards, Cgettings (talk) 16:35, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

Eugene Bright

Hi Nancy, I ran across a page entitled Eugene Bright. He is a pro football player and all, but I tend to think this page needs to be removed or more notable things added to it. If we allow every third and fourth string player who ever played college and pro football to be added it would be a mess!! Please take a look at the page and see what you think. Thanks for your time and hard work. JohnnyHall (talk) 02:58, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

My F1 dream.com

I see you deleted that article while discussion was still ongoing, which, while it was a fairly wretched article that I had nothing to do with, did have some vague promise. It was deleted as a blog or internet group or something, whereas there is some evidence that it was a prospective Formula One team. Time should have been allowed for possible expansion. Bretonbanquet (talk) 16:30, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

The entire discussion, such as there was concluded within 30 minutes over 3 hours ago. There was no credible assertion of notability in the article - a joke attempt at entry to F1 2010 (for which one needs a minimum of £40m pa.....) does not cut the mustard. However, if you think there is merit in the article then that's really great & my best advice would be for you create a qualifying version in userspace & post it back to mainspace once it's complete, referenced, meets the notability criteria etc. Best, Nancy talk 16:36, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
There's no deadline to complete discussions. The shortcomings of the article aside, it was not a joke attempt at entry to the 2010 season - an official entry was made, and other article exist largely on that basis. Rest assured I could create an article that satsifies the notability criteria and I wouldn't need to use userspace to do it. However, even though a satisfactory article could be created, it's not something I'm interested in doing, or I would have done it already. I merely think that the deletion was a little rapid, and that was my original point. Bretonbanquet (talk) 17:42, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the help on Ouvrages du Libron

WOW -- thanks so much for the help on the Ouvrages du Libron article. Yesterday I saw your name on the Locks on the Canal du Midi page and thought I would write and ask your advice on adding the Ouvrages article to that page. Today, I see you have joined me in discussion there!

A procedural question: How should I have responded to your discussion on both of the afore mentioned pages? Should I have said something in those discussions, or should I have come here to discuss it. I am brand new to wiki and have not responded to anyone's talk page before.

On a personal note, I cruised the canal this last June and fell in love with it. The only book I have is the "Canal Lifts and Inclines of the World", which I am sure you have heard of. I'll start looking for a copy of "Sea to Sea".

thanks again, so much, for your updates.... GloverEpp (talk) 15:35, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Pervez Musharraf

Dear Nancy, I believe that the article on Pervez Musharraf is constantly reverted back to upgrade his family background and status on the grounds of a geocities entry. His background has clearly been stated in his own memoires, and I really don't understand why this is being reverted to a non-factual position. I had also left a comment on this in the discussion page and no one has bothered to comment on it. In fact, if you check the history - someone actually deleted my signed comment without assigning a reason. If its the policy of wikipedia to put up something which is being politically manipulated and manoeuvred so be it - but then all should be dealt with equitably by the Admins. Best regards. Hi Nancy - My name is Niamh Parsons - I'm a singer - my website is www.niamhparsons.com - I have tried on numerous occasions to put up a wikipedia page about me and my music but everything has been deleted as 'infringement of copyright for www.niamhparsons.com' - but I AM Niamh Parsons and want to put up information - how can I go about this - It's really frustrating - the information on my website is my information, written by me, about me, for my career - can you help me somehow.

Niamh Parsons 86.44.28.30 (talk) 14:23, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

niamhparsons@eircom.net

Hi Niamh and welcome to Wikipedia. This is quite a complex situation and there are a number of Wikipedia policies and guidelines which are relevant. The first and most important is our copyright policy - Wikipedia can only accept text which is released to the "copyleft" license GFDL; the text on your website is marked as copyright and is therefore not acceptable. As the copyright owner you can do something about this, e.g. change the copyright notice on your site to one compatible with GFDL but this would of course mean you would lose control over the use of the text and images which may not be a desirable outcome. You should also have a look through our guidelines for autobiographies - whilst writing about yourself is not prohibited it is actively discouraged as we realise that it is very difficult to remain neutral and objective when writing about a subject so very close to you - a general rule of thumb is that if a subject meets the Wikipedia inclusion criteria (in this case specifically the guidelines for notability of musicians then someone unconnected will be along soon enough to create an article.
Hope this helps, kind regards, Nancy talk 06:54, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Richard Bradley

Hallo Nancy, I wonder if you can help me with this Cannons gardener. I have moved him into a category for botanists with author abbreviations, but when I read more about this category it appears I should have filled in a template rather than manually move him into the category --Alan (talk) 13:02, 27 August 2009 (UTC).

Hi Alan. I think I've fixed it; I removed the direct link to the category and added {{botanist|Bradley|Bradley, Richard}} which seems to have done the trick - it's put the article in to the correct category and inserted a natty little template box noting the abbreviation. Very clever! Best, Nancy talk 07:10, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Nancy. It looks fine.--Alan (talk) 14:44, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Your assistance please...

On December 25 2008 I requested the userification of Mike Moran (firefighter) -- an expired {{prod}}. You can see my request here.

The record shows you deleted the userified article, User:Geo Swan/review/Mike Moran (firefighter), a few hours later, as a "user request".

I am trying to maintain a record of when I request deletion of articles I started, and why I requested deletion. My records don't indicate my requesting deletion of this one.

Possibly, after it was userified, I looked at it, and decided it didn't really merit work after all, and put a {{db-author}} on it. That would be human error on my part to have failed to record that request.

It occured to me however that maybe, when it was userified it still had the deletion tag left on.

So, I would appreciate you checking the revision history, and verifying that I did add a deletion tag, after the article was userified. If it is not too much trouble I would be grateful if you let me know when I started that article.

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 12:19, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

The article was first created on 10 November 2004 by IP 63.196.241.140, it was prodded on 27 September 2008 and deleted 5 days later. It was then moved to your userspace on 26 December 2008 and you requested deletion moments later. As far as I can see the only edit you made to it as Geo Swan in its entire history was to request the delete. Hope this helps, best, Nancy talk 12:15, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Another Canal du Midi page

Nancy: Would appreciate your taking a look at my latest Canal du Midi type page Bassin de St. Ferréol. It had previously redirected to Lac_de_Saint-Ferréol. We had talked before about having a page of canal du midi Structures. Rather than a page, how about doing a category and include such things as Fonserannes_water_slope, Ouvrages_du_Libron, and Bassin_de_St._Ferréol and whatever else there might be besides the locks? I guess locks could/should be included as well.

On another subject, my Sea to See book, by Rolt, has a great drawing of the St Ferrol Dam, can I scan it in and store it in WikiMedia? How in the world would you get permission to do that? Or, is it better to do it and then ask for forgiveness later? GloverEpp (talk) 14:40, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Haven't had a chance to look at the article yet, will try to look before I go away (to a house on the Canal du Midi on Friday - can't wait!). So pleased you got hold of a copy of From Sea to Sea - isn't it the most wonderful book? Is the drawing you are referring to the one captioned "Profil et elevation des voutes du bassin de St. Ferreol"? (in my edition it's on page 53, yours may differ) if so then it is fine to scan and upload as the original artwork is out of copyright having been created several centuries ago - I can't be sure but I would bet that it is from Andreossy's 1804 "Histoire du Canal du Midi". If you want to see how to deal with the copyright etc just copy what I did for File:Andreossy plan of the Libron Raft.jpg which is from the same source - you probably recognise it! All best, Nancy talk 17:39, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Page Deleted for "Copyright" violation

Hi there. I am not here to argue your deletion of my article because I can't even remember what was on it. However it was a page about a committee of the government. [here]

Here is what was written on it when I go to edit it and it is empty

Warning: You are recreating a page that was previously deleted. You should consider whether it is appropriate to continue editing this page. The deletion and move log for this page are provided here for convenience:

08:15, 31 March 2009 Nancy (talk | contribs) deleted "Standing Committee on Mental Health and Additions" ‎ (G12: Blatant copyright infringement of http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/house-proceedings/house_detail.do?Date=2009-02-24&Parl=39&Sess=1&locale=en#P454_146606 Note: copyright notice on site states "for non-commercial use only")

And if I did quote from the page of the government, it would not be a copyright violation as far as I can tell because it is a government site and it says on the page "not for commercial use" and WikiPedia is not a commercial use, it is free. Commercial use means a profit venture.

Do you know which page I am referring to? It was about a Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Please get back to me so we can discuss it and so I can learn. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Afterfostercare (talkcontribs) 02:04, 13 September 2009 (UTC) Afterfostercare (talk) 02:08, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away for a few weeks. The problem is that the copyright notice on the site expressly prohibits the alteration of material which is means that the copyright release is incompatible with the GFDL license that Wikipedia uses. Hope this helps to clarify. Kind regards, Nancy talk 15:36, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

List of Dictators

I declined a speedy as copyvio, and said I was considering the other factors (by which of course I meant the repost) You then chose to delete it while I was writing a discussion of the history of it. of repost. I was about to say on the talk p., which you also deleted, that

This page is a copy of the Conservapedia page, [9], which itself is a modified copy of an earlier Wikipedia page. Their licensing is not identical to ours[10] (being a/revocable and b/not requiring attribution). I have not checked on the relatively small changes, between all the multiple versions of their page and of the former one on Wikipedia, but it could also be argued that as a derivative work, their page remains licensed under our license regardless.
Restoration of deleted material

This article had initially survived an AfD in 2005 as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of modern day dictators. An AfD in 2006, as Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of dictators , was closed as delete by Docg as inherently POV because of the title regardless of the contents; Doc G deleted a recreation under the title List of dictators on January 4, 2007. I am not sure the arguments in 2006 would be accepted today, 3 years later. I am asking doc whether he would like to redelete followed by my request for a deletion review, or send again to AfD, at his option. I am not personally sure how I would !vote at a 2nd AfD.

Most of us do not like to have an admin action reverted while one is in the process of writing the justification for it. But, of course, even after a speedy is declined, it can be re-speedied under a different reason, such as the one you gave. I nonetheless think it might be viewed as discourteous to proceed as you did without checking with me, since I was obviously online, so I assume you did not see my edit summary that I was considering the re-creation--which took more than a minute or two,as i was reading the various restored versions nd afds and G4 summaries.. Obviously, the community must settle this, so to simplify the procedure I am sending it to deletion review. DGG ( talk ) 15:38, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

New article for the CdM -- User:Gloverepp/test

Nancy: would you check this article out before I move it into the public area. I have several references that may not be completely correct. Also, should I name the site épanchoir_à_siphon with the accents or epanchoir_a_siphon without? It seems like not using the accents would help with searching. Which words should be capitalized? See it at User:Gloverepp/test thanks GloverEpp (talk) 18:23, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Glover. Nice work! Strictly speaking the article shoudl be titled "Syphon sluice" - wiki convention says that article should be titled per the common English language term for the subject. The first sentence would thus run:
Syphon sluices (French: épanchoir à siphon) are one of the many water management devices used on the Canal du Midi.....
There would then be redirect pages for épanchoir à siphon both with and without the accent so that should someone type in the French term they would end up on the correct page. I can help you with the redirects. The rules for capitalisation are that all article titles should be in sentence case - i.e. only the first word is capitalised apart from proper nouns.
The Structurae refs are problematic - they do not actually support the statement that they are attached to i.e. that Garripuy Jr designed the sluice. You should remove them. Also in my copy of Sea to Sea the caption for the drawing in the article credits M. Garripuy as the designer. I'd also consider going in to slightly more detail about the 54km Long Pound on which both Capestang and Ventenac sit as the length of that reach is a major contributor to the problems with the water level.

Nancy: I'll try to use all of your suggestions and let you know when I have moved it. As to your statement above "...Also in my copy of Sea to Sea the caption for the drawing in the article credits M. Garripuy as the designer...." Are you saying that Garripuy's first initial is M? I assumed the M stood for Monsieur. GloverEpp (talk) 19:58, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

DUH! of course. Monsieur. What an idiot I can be sometimes! LOL Nancy talk 21:33, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Nancy: It's in place at Siphon_sluice along with the two redirects. I had to choose between syphon and siphon. Siphon seemed to be the spelling most often used. I assume you have a watch on this page so that I don't need to give you a tb. I'm still trying to understand this communication device. thanks again. Reconsidering Deletion of an article

Plz reconsider the deletion of the article at

http://www.deletionpedia.dbatley.com/w/index.php?title=Kunal_singh_%28deleted_07_Jun_2008_at_08:25%29

because wiki have no info about Kunal Singh now eventhough he acted in some superhit movies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alan.idea (talkcontribs) 03:32, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Alan, regardless of the notability, there were WP:BLP concerns in the deleted article so I am not comfortable about recreating the article & anyway you have access to the deleted text at Deletionpedia. I would suggest that the best way forward for you is to write a completely new article showing why Kunal is notable remembering that everything must be backed up by citations from independent reliable sources. • 07:50, 7 June 2008 Nancy protected Necromandus ‎ (Protect redirect [edit=autoconfirmed:move=autoconfirmed])

That was 16 months ago. Whatever it was then, Necromandus is now an article, not a redirect. Would you please consider removing semiprotection? This is part of my large scale review of all longstanding indefinite semiprotections. --TS 10:12, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

No problem - done. Nancy talk 13:41, 2 October 2009 (UTC)

Please "userfy" Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America, which I have just written to replace a deleted article

David spector (talk) 23:55, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Done - now found at User:David spector/Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America. Nancy talk 17:22, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Nancy, I don't understand what "userfy" means. I was just doing what a template says to do. This should be a regular article, accessible to anyone, not an archived article under my name. David spector (talk) 00:29, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

I've restored the article, and added a Talk entry describing what I did. Please take a look and make sure everything is Wikipedia-correct. David spector (talk) 00:41, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

New site for your experienced eye Cesse_aqueduct

Thought you might have some info to help me out here: Cesse_aqueduct. I have no info on length, width, depth. Are there six aqueducts on the Canal du Midi? Cesse, Orb, Orbiel, Fresquel, Ognon, and Repudre? This place was a wonderful experience for me! GloverEpp (talk) 15:09, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Nancy: Is this of interest to you? User:Gloverepp/Canal_du_Midi_-_A_Chronology. I've been through the Mukerji Impossible Engineering and Rolt, L. T. C. From Sea to Sea books twice to collect as many dates as possible. Unfortunately, those are the only two books I have at this time. This work in progress comes in handy for me when I begin to write a new article. GloverEpp (talk) 14:37, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Glover. Article looking good, I've added some technical info about the previous dam and put all the measurements in both metric and imperial. You are missing one aqueduct from your list - Hers Aqueduct at Villefranche-de-Lauragais, about 40km from Toulouse. Your chronology is very useful actually as I'm tinkering with a re-write of the CdM article & it helps very much to get everything in the right order in my head and to have access to a quick aide memoire. All best. Nancy talk 17:05, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Nancy Thanks. I ordered four CdM books today - couldn't wait till Christmas. I saw your WIP page. Hope you can use some of the links I'm building. Am working on the rigole of the mountains today. GloverEpp (talk) 17:27, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Photo for EITHER Ribassel or Argent-Double

I finished these two aqueducts Ribassel Aqueduct and Argent-Double Aqueduct. I don't have much about them in my books and could find almost nothing on the www including the French wiki. I did find this great photo, but can't figure out which of them it might be. which is this?

GloverEpp (talk) 19:01, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Glover, it's definitely the Argent Double, however the photo is copyright all rights reserved so it is no good for Wikipedia...... but..... I have some photographs of it that I took last year so I'll upload them to commons tonight. Nancy talk 09:21, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Nancy, thanks for the photos. GloverEpp (talk) 19:35, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

What's going on w/ Shelby, Mississippi

Nancy: I follow your contribs some time and am wonder struck by all that you do. Must say, I am impressed! Can you summarize for me, if it's worth your time, as to what in the world is going on w/ Shelby, Mississippi. You and M.D. have obviously crossed swords over the last year or so. It is amazing to me how you would even find out about this obscure site being vandalized. And, how do you recognize such subtle vandalism? Anyway, it's fun to watch you work. I've done my little 23 articles for the canal and hope to learn more by watching you. On another subject, the Washington Post had a front page article on the editor who works on the Washington, D.C., User:Epicadam. It was nice to see someone get credit for all that you editors do without seeking the credit. P.S. Is there a spell check here somewhere? GloverEpp (talk) 01:20, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

The Shelby thing has been going on for a couple of years now - the vandalism there is all the work of one person and it's quite subtle as you say, however it follows a clear pattern and I've been watching it for so long that I'm tuned in to it now. As far as I know it is all down to one person - originally the M.D Lawes account - it all got a bit out of hand about a year ago, turned a little nasty and personal & ended up in a sockpuppet investigation. Regarding spell-checking I'm not aware of a Wikipedia spell-check option but I edit using Mozilla Firefox as my browser (generally I find it better for many aspects of Wikipedia than Internet Explorer), Firefox has a dictionary/spell checker plug-in which highlights errors as I type. Albawardi page

Hello Nancy,

Thank you for taking the time and reading my page. I created the page Albawardi Group purely for non-commercial use. This was my first ever artle to write on Wikipedia. I read the article for first timers and I hope I followed them correctly. Please allow me to post that article once again.

If not, please specify what I did wrong so that I can correct it and be able to post the article again.

Thanks again, Mishal —Preceding unsigned comment added by Baw1957 (talkcontribs) 06:39, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Without going in to the question of whether the company meets Wikipedia's notability requirement, the reason that the page was deleted is that it was a cut and paste of copyright material. Wikipedia cannot accept copyright material and all text on Wikipedia must be able to be released under the GFDL "copyleft" licence. The steps to go through to release the text are noted on your user talk page however as the whole article was lifted directly from the company's website and thus raises issues of neutrality and advertising, you might be better off writing something from scratch - making sure of course that the notability requirement is met! Best of luck, Nancy talk 09:26, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Streatley

I was just wondering why you got rid of the bit in streatley about the new house that's causing runctions. It's a notable event (see [11],[12],[13], and the fact that one of the people leading the charge (and threatening to break the law) is notable herself peta buscombe - she's a public figure threatening civil and criminal damage.

The planning site on the west berks website proved it was for Darryl Boulton [14].

Admittedly the Geri bit may be rumour - but it was in the sources quoted.

I don't know how much more notable you want something to get before it should be included? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Petsco (talkcontribs) 12:19, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Whilst recognising that to the people involved it is of the utmost importance I guess I took the view that a current minor planning dispute was not of particular note, and was, in the great scheme of salient information about Streatley, rather trivial. No great axe to grind though and would not consider it an edit war if a mention was put back in..... but I think you'd be right to drop the Geri bit though - repeating (apparently false) rumour isn't very encyclopaedic!! Kindest regards, Nancy talk 15:34, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Deleting the page

I probably used the wrong template on User:KENs pudler. Do you know how to delete the user account or maybe rename the user account to something else? It's not the content on the page that's a problem, it's the user name. Nsaa (talk) 17:16, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I did wonder why you had created the page only in order to request it's deletion!!! With problematic usernames the usual remedy is to block them indefinitely. As this user already has an indef block for vandalism we can consider it job done. Best, Nancy talk 19:02, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

My article on Brett Fletcher

I've been trying to create this page for a long time - it keeps getting deleted. Could you please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Mr. Fletcher has written several fascinating books, has his first one recorded in the Library of Congress, his poetry has been published internationally, etc...Am I adding things I shouldn't? Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.

Thank you for your time.

lchiniching —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lchiniching (talkcontribs) 07:45, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

The basic problem is that whilst I am sure that Mr Fletcher's work is indeed fascinating, he has not yet met Wikipedia's general notability guidelines for biographies and particular our notability guidelines for authors. This was confirmed in a deletion discussion back in June which means that the biography will continue to be removed until the required notability standard is attained. I can appreciate how frustrating this may appear to you but equally I'm sure you can understand why Wikipedia needs to benchmark such things. All best, Nancy talk 11:50, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

What is La Robine on Template:Canal du Midi map

Hi, me again. Do you know what La Robine is on the CdM template. It is in between La Nouvelle Branch to summit level and Truilhas Bridge. I walked the tow path in that area and have looked at satelite images and can't figure out what it is supposed to be. My best guess is that it is a marina. If so, it's position is misplaced. The marina is before the bridge, coming from Cesse Aqueduct.

Here is the area I'm talking about. 43°16′54″N 2°55′08″E / 43.28177°N 2.91894°E / 43.28177; 2.91894 The cross hairs are right on top of what I think is the Truilhas Bridge. Cesse aqueduct is to the left. The marina is very close to the bridge on the left and the entrace to Nouvelle Branch is to the right.

Here are my photos, if that helps any:

Extended content
If La Robine is a marina then this must be it.
This is industrial site between bridge and entrance to Canal du Jonction - Maybe this is it.
I think this is Truilhas Bridge.

GloverEpp (talk) 18:58, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

mmmmn, you've stumbled upon an error that I found when I cycled from Paraza to the junction with La Nouvelle branch in September. We had the faithful Rolt with us and we noticed that he had La Robine - which as you correctly surmised is the marina - out of sequence. Which raises a Wiki problem; on wikipedia the rule is "verifiability not truth" - so... the reliable source for the template], i.e. Rolt, says that La Robine is one side of the bridge, our personal observation in real life and on maps says it is the other.... I pondered the dilemma when I got home and vowed to find another WP:RS to support changing the template but haven't managed to locate one so far (OK, haven't really tried very hard...... yet....). Now you have reminded me I am tempted to WP:IAR and change it anyway. Nancy talk 19:47, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Nancy Perhaps the marina moved! There is a big commercial facility on the same side of the canal as the marina. Perhaps they bought the old marina site and it just moved under the bridge to the other side? You can see their concrete embankment in the second photo. When you say, "... faithful Rolt ..." are you speaking of "Sea to Sea" or another book? So, the ball's in your court. all the best.. GloverEpp (talk) 22:45, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Nancy If you do change it, you might also call it Port-la-Robine as done in {{cite book | last = Jefferson | first = David | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = Through the French Canals | publisher = Adlard Colles Nautical | date = 2009 | location = | pages = 280,288,291| url = | doi = | id = | isbn = 978-1-4081-0381-4 }}
Also, above reference and the sign
You are here
say that the turn is at 168.5 instead of the 168.7 shown on the template. Port-la-Robine is at PK168 in above reference.
Here's a map of Port de la Robine: Map
GloverEpp (talk) 18:12, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Changed! (name too - you're right it is clearer). When I mention Rolt it is From Sea to Sea - my edition has an itinerary in Appendix D listing all the features of the canal (bridges, locks, marinas, quays, tunnel, junctions....) & their km from Toulouse which I used as the source for the template.
