First passenger train

Hi, re this and this: whilst it is true that the Stockton and Darlington ran passenger trains five years before the Liverpool and Manchester, the important point is that the L&M was the first railway to use steam traction for passenger trains. Until 1833, the S&D used horses to haul their passenger trains, the steam locos being used only on goods trains. The S&D was not the first to run passenger trains, either - the Oystermouth Railway (in South Wales) ran its first passenger train as early as 1807. T --Redrose64 (talk) 16:06, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the message, much appreciated. However I'm afraid it is still incorrect to claim the L&MR ran the first steam hauled passenger trains. The S&DR indeed ran steam hauled passenger trains as early as 1825. The Canterbury and Whitstable ran steam hauled passenger trains that predated the opening of the L&MR. To quote The C&WR "...was the first to take fare-paying passengers in steam hauled trains... The railway opened on 3 May 1830, months before the Liverpool & Manchester." So whether one accepts its was the S&DR or the C&WR that was first, it certainly was not the L&MR. Mxcvi (talk) 18:42, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
