It doesn't really matter where you reply. I personally like to keep conversations together, but many other Wikipedians always reply on the recipient's talk page. By the way, don't let all those links intimidate you. Most of them are just part of the welcome template. As long as you familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, respect other users, and use common sense, you'll be fine. If you do something wrong, someone else will likely fix it and kindly let you know how to handle similar situations in the future. Wikipedians are generally very friendly to newly registered users. Yugoslav dinar

Good work on linking Montenegrin perper! Never heard of that one, and I was born in SFR Yugoslavia :-) How did you find that one? Second... hm, you changed "dinars" to "dinara" on several places. Now, that's wrong. "Dinara" is plural in Serbo-croatian, and "dinars" is plural in English. We use English here. Therefore, I will now revert "dinara" to "dinars". Then... ah, yes, Montenegro started using Mark in 1999, not in 2000... And, should we clearly state that dinar was used together with mark/euro til 2001? --Dijxtra 09:37, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Dijxtra, Although the word 'Dinara' is Serbian, it is also commonly used in English. The plural of Perper (as in the Montenegrin currency) is Perpera, as the Montenegrins also speak Serbian as well. - (Aidan Work 04:18, 20 December 2005 (UTC))

New category

Hello hello and welcome to the wacky and wonderful world of WP. I saw a category you created (it's great to see a new user creating categories, btw.) The category might be somewhat redundant, since it is basically a clone of U.S. Mint engravers. However, if articles on currency designers other than engravers can be found, it might be quite useful, so if you find any be sure to include them. Also, the engravers category should be contained within the designers category, since all mint engravers are currency designers.

It really should be automated, especially for updates (such as adding the template to new pages, and deletions) but other than writing a bot and/or making a bot request I don't see any other way to do it, since you can't show relatedchangeslinked for whatlinkshere. I greatly admire your zeal for Wikipedia and as a fellow numismatist, I appreciate your contributions.

Please do not take the following as an attack on yourself or on your contributions.

Most of the changes to the categorization scheme regarding the United States Mint you have made should be immediately reverted. I created that category for articles relating to the United States Mint, a U.S. government agency currently part of the Treasury Department. From the looks of it, you may have been somewhat confused about a) how Wikipedia categories work and b) how the Mint is structured.

Category:United States Mint has been replaced with Category:United States mints, a change that I am going to revert. Yes, there are many facilities in the United States that operate or have operated as a mint, however there is one agency known as the United States Mint, and articles concerning it should be in a subcategory by that name under cat:US Treasury Department. A category concerning the various mints of the United States should exist under Category:United States Mint. It appears as if you had this in mind, which is certainly a good addition to the categorization scheme. However, I will say it again for clarification: all U.S. government mints - Philadelphia, Denver, Carson City, Dahlonega, whatever - should ultimately be under the category:United States Mint, as that is the government agency that they are a part of.

Furthermore, your currency designers category is mostly redundant with US Mint engravers. It is possible that there are other persons who are currency designers who were not mint engravers, so if this is the case, be sure to add their articles to your new category.

Please do not take this as an attack. You are obviously an intelligent person with much to offer Wikipedia and its numismatics articles. Some of your changes should be undone, but I am certain you have made and will make many others that are/will be beneficial.

Categories and stuff

Firstly, let me apologize for not giving you feedback sooner. Secondly, let me say that I've met many numismatists in my life, and maybe .01% of them are female. It's great to meet another (we don't want to be stereotyped, as a group, as being old men with large beards, which is the case for most numismatists that I know!)

I will gladly clarify anything you are uncertain about concerning U.S. coinage. (Where do you live, by the way? My guess is Britain or Canada.) Here's a few basic things:

• The U.S. mint does indeed have many branches, although a category for branch mints wasn't created because I wasn't sure if there would be enough entries to warrant such a category. The problem here is that there are four mints that are today operating, and a handful more that operated in the past, so having them all in a category might be confusing. Anyways, we can work on that.

• Regarding officers/directors/engravers, here's my take:
  • Directors of the Mint are probably the only notable officials within the mint, so that would probably be the only necessary category.
  • Engravers might technically be "officials" or "officers" but they are never referred to as such so that might be confusing. Having a category for directors and one for engravers would probably be sufficient to catch virtually all Mint-related biographical articles; the occasional straggler can just be placed in Category:United States Mint (such as that guy who was a superintendent). If more articles on superintendents or other officials begin appearing (which I doubt, but it is possible) then a subcategory of United States Mint officials (rather than officers) might be useful for that.
  • Regarding other mints in the U.S., they do indeed exist, but as I mentioned, they are not part of the U.S. Mint. Examples would be the Franklin or Bradford mints; these are certainly notable but should be in a category such as Private mints, etc., rather than commingled with the U.S. Mint.

Your category suggestions are mostly excellent. I'll point out a few things I would change:

• Category:Currency forgery should stay the same, because both paper and metal currencies can be forged.
• The Mint categories, obviously.

Otherwise you presented some solid ideas. Keep me appraised of your progress.

Currency designers

Your category will probably be useful in this situation because of the artists who the Mint has taken on to design the newer coins (nickel and dollar especially). So, categorize articles at your discretion (make sure of course that categories don't become redundant and that they are properly subcategorized - i.e. anything to do with the U.S. Mint comes under Category:United States Mint, et cetera.

I have some potentially exciting news (I don't know if anyone other than me is excited by this)...today I saw a series 2003 $2 FRN...I had no idea that they made any of them since the 1995 series. Conditional template

Hi,

succession box page move

It is absolutely not a bad thing to do. It's getting to clumsy by the day. I've been meaning to do that too. I also see that you've been doing some reorganization. Therefore the barnstar!

I did some work on the articles of the 3 Taiwanese currencies. I hope you will like it. I've been frustrated by the amount of factual errors on wikipedia. I'll probably engage some discussion with User:Dove1950 on the Korean and Mozambican currencies.

Ethiopian birr

Hi, thanks a million for sharing that pic! I can read the Ethiopian writing, and in Amharic (the Official Language of Etopia) it clearly says "Two Birr" right next to the translation, Deux Thalers... The Birr page looks good now... but, it seems a little strange to make a distinction between Abyssinia and Ethiopia, as if they were two different entities. The native name was ityoppya (Ethiopia) long before 1931; in that year, the Emperor formally requested the international community to begin using Ethiopia instead of Abyssinia, much as the Shah, around the same time, requested the use of "Iran" instead of "Persia" for his country (and it was also around this time that Siam became Thailand, I believe...) Anyway, it might make more sense for one box reading "Abyssinia / Ethiopia" in place of the two separate boxes...? ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 21:42, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

British currencies

Thanks for the message. As soon as I noticed that the currencies of the Crown Dependencies had been moved into a UK cat:, I moved them out - as the Crown Dependencies are attached to the British Crown not the UK, they are British but not part of the UK. The UK overseas territories I left, as although they are not part of the UK they are under UK sovereignty, but their currencies might be argued to be of the United Kingdom. British is often a handy global designation that covers lots of territories - the UK is specifically only England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. -of Britain, as you envisage, would run up against problem of excluding, on the face of it, Northern Ireland. British Islands would cover the UK and the Crown Dependencies, but not the overseas territories. It's a constitutional patchwork, I'm afraid (see British Isles (terminology), and if it is desired that all the currencies fall into one category, I can't think of anything better than British currencies. Recategorization

The reason I've continued using "Category:Historical currencies" is that "Modern Obselete" is not a well defined category. "Obselete" would be fine, but where do you draw the line between modern and ancient?

I'm dimly aware of a 1500 division in numismatics between "Medieval" and "Modern" but it's pretty obscure and I'm not convinced it is appropriate for a non-specialist encyclopedia. I'll start using the templates but I'll check that this definition is clear within the template.

I see that you are busy with recategorizing currencies. I am doing something on my own too. I'm trying to unify the tables of banknote details. I'm also adding stubs in preparation for the succession box (although I hate editing text). I would like to ease your tasks by doing what you do on the new stubs that I create. regarding banknote table, I'm thinking about this

• use named parameters for the header row, so that the columns are in some kind of order (e.g. denom always before dimension, dimension always before front), and all columns are optional
• I am not sure if I should use numeric parameter or named parameter for a regular row. cons and pros: (but either way, the width of the thumbnail (if any) can be standardized)
  • numeric parameter: users don't need to specify things like denom = $1 | color = green | front = Washington ..., they can be shortened to $1 | green | Washington, etc
  • named parameter: if the ordering of the header row changes, all we need to do is to change the ordering of the template of the detail row
• What about rowspan? Sometimes we need a rowspan. See New Taiwan dollar

Austro-Hungarian Gulden Succession Box

Just thought I'd better point out that the gulden cannot be considered the currency of the Holy Roman Empire. Officially, there were three currency zones within the empire, the south used the gulden, the north the Reichsthaler and Hamburg the mark. Of course, it was more complicated than that with local rulers sometimes doing their own thing, but it might be used as a guide. I'm planning to have a real bash at cataloguing the currencies of the individual German states soon. Then things might get a bit clearer for succession boxes (although that's probably wishful thinking). Oh, and thanks for signing my comment and getting my gender correct.

Hey, I've been thinking of adding a 1.0 assesment page to project numismatics, to look much like this one. Unfortunatly there are other parameters to be meet within the talk page templetes. Will this mess with your bot, or the already establised articles and recent changes lists? Can I create the extra parameters within Template:Numismaticnotice, or do I need to start a new one? Hey, I was just wondering round wiki and found alot of images witout {{Numismaticnotice}}. Did you not send your bot thru Category:Currency images? Hey, The obsolate forint banknotes are not my scans, I just chose the licence tag, cuz Ron Wise wrote on his site that the bill pics can be used for any non commercial purpose. Hello, I would be happy if you helped me with the copyright tags on Wikimedia Commons. Most of the banknote scans I upload is my own scan of banknotes from my own collection. The rest - mostly rare and thus very expensive banknotes missing from my collection - are from auction sites or sometimes from Ron Wise's world paper money page. See User talk:WatchlistBot. The Bot seems to be adding the "Texas" category to a bunch of Louisiana articles related to Hurricane Katrina. -- Infrogmation 22:43, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

The bot seems also to have added the WP Numismatics project banner to talk pgs for articles on Spanish provinces, autonomous communities and some cities as well - see for eg talk:Valencia (city), talk:Seville, talk:Lleida. I'm presuming this was not the intention, and so perhaps that project or the bot would need to re-examine these and remove the banner where necessary. WatchlistBot/Automobiles

Is there any chance the workflow for this bot might be able to be tweaked to be something like:

1. a bot or human initially tags all categories for a given project with a specific template, akin to {{Numismaticnotice}}, but used only for categories.
2. the bot provides a list of newly-created neighboring categories that humans might want to tag
3. the final list-of-articles is generated from all the articles that are in any category tagged by the template

Specifically, I've been thinking about doing something like this for Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles for a while. This method might be a little more imprecise than the one used for Numismatics, but Automobiles has ~12k namespace-0 articles, so a little imprecision on the edges isn't so bad, if it lets the bot pick up new articles ASAP. (though I probably don't completely understand what your bot does) --Interiot 03:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I have the list of categories pinned down already (510 of them), and I'll initially put down the template with AWB as soon as I know this will work. All I need is for a bot to find the (untagged) articles beneath those tagged categories, and keep a list updated with them. Is it very easy to make the bot do that?

It turns out the servers don't like having 12k links on one page (it actually refuses to save the wikitext), so I split some topics out to trim it down to 8000, and a prototype works great. Right, so I don't need it to do any tagging. Can it just 1) find the tagged categories, 2) find the untagged articles beneath each category (eg. it shouldn't look in subcategories), and 3) regularly dump those articles to a specific page? The list should be uploaded to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Automobiles/Articles. The template to use.... try {{AutomobileWatch}} (I'll create that tommorow, it's late here). I could run it if you want, it doesn't matter much to me. Either way, I would think it's less important to run it supervised, since it's updating a single page that humans aren't supposed to edit? --Interiot 18:43, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

The method I'm suggesting is definitely a compromise. There are some categories that are >50% automobiles, but contain other things (eg. Category:Electric vehicles contains trams, trains, golf carts, etc). On the other hand, it picks up new articles relatively quickly, and if dealing with 8000 entries, there's going to be cruft articles anyway.

As for including articles or not... whatever's for you. I suppose it's conceptually consistent to union them in, but don't worry about it if it takes much time. Formatting doesn't matter either... whatever's easiest.

A random tip: This link will let you view a "related watchlist"... it's like "related changes", except it only shows the latest change, which is sometimes desirable.

On the latest pass, Watchlist bot put articles into subpages [2]. Would it be possible to not break them out (or to transclude them so that the relatedchanges still works on the top page)? If the issue is the number of articles, would it be possible to not include talk: pages? I'm fairly certain that all the links will fit on one page then (though watchlistbot is still trying to split it into two pages even before it gets to talk pages, which I believe MediaWiki shouldn't be forcing it to do). --Interiot 10:04, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Automobiles pestering

Dear Ingrid,

You have been unfortunate enough to have posted on Interiot's talk page while it was on my watchlist, so that I got hold of such a wonderful and proficient codemistress!

We are discussing some ways for reorganizing work at our WikiProject to better keep track of the massive amount of articles within its scope and focus our efforts on those needing attention. I have been talking to Interiot about a script/bot that would be very helpful in that, but unfortunately it seems that Interiot will not be able to help with such advanced coding.

Basically, I am working User:Bravada/template on a template, similar to the one employed by WikiProject Trains (Template:WikiProject Trains) that would automatically categorize article as not only belonging to our WikiProject, but also to a specific Task Force within it, and also assign a category according to the article's quality rating and importance. I was wondering whether it would be possible to have a bot, based on from the code of you wonderful WatchlistBot, that would then generate lists of articles cross-checking more than one category - for example, all articles within a Task Force of a given importance level, with quality indicated by an icon. And perhaps even add a counter :D

If you believe it would be technically feasible, would there be any possibility of convincing you to devote some of your precious time to helping us develop such a bot? In case not, perhaps you could point to another user we could ask for help with this important issue?

Hmmm, then a template with "obsolate money with no copyrights reserved" would help. Most of the copyright of obsolate banknotes and coins (which used to be held by the issuing authority, not by the designer or manufacturer) are relesed. There are only a few (but well known) exceptions e.g. Bank of England, Turkey, Canada etc. If this (or something similar) doesn't work, tell me what license tag I should use in the future. WatchlistBot request

Hi there. I'm looking to see if WatchlistBot could create a project watchlist for two separate projects and update them on a weekly basis. The two projects are Wikipedia:WikiProject Louisville and Wikipedia:WikiProject Kentucky, and the articles already catalogued for each project are in the categories Category:WikiProject Louisville and Category:WikiProject Kentucky, respectively. I imagine I would create a subpage for each project where this bot (on a weekly basis) would create a full list of links to articles listed in each of these categories. The reason it needs to be run weekly is because the number of articles included in the projects is still growing, and sometimes articles get dropped or moved. New articles list

I don't know if this is ever something you might consider adding to WatchlistBot, but we're currently generating a list of new autombile articles from the list that WatchlistBot generates. (I'm currently just looking for the "N" in the relatedchanges).

Ultimately, WatchlistBot data can drive a number of things that are useful to WikiProjects (eg. list all articles up for deletion, list all articles tagged for merging, ...), but new articles is a good place to start. And maybe some of these things might be easier to do if the toolserver ever comes back online. --Interiot 09:31, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

As long as it's practical for you... Giving wikiprojects a "new articles" list may make wikiprojects anxious to have the bot run every 3-5 days. Also, in the case of automobiles, WatchlistBot doesn't tag new articles, so would the new articles list still work for Automobiles? There's an issue with WatchlistBot's output near Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles/Articles#9 9... there's a number of links that end up not being wikilinked for some reason.

Do you know already which articles are redirects? (and if you don't, how do you know how to pick them up? redirects aren't usually underneath automobile categories). If you know which ones aren't redirects (because people don't usually care about redirects when doing new-page patrol), then you just hook into the recentchanges some way (because the recentchanges table records whether there's a recent revision that's marked New). I don't know what framework you're using, I don't konw how to accomplish that directly (query.php doesn't seem to currently output the "New" flag).

As far as what article might be causing the issue on Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles/Articles... no, I'm not sure. The unwikified items appear to be the categories that are marked... eg. Hello Ingrid,

Could your bot generate a watchlist of articles under Category:Cricket and its subcategories please. No template tagging, I'm just looking for a list that gets refreshed every few days or however often suits you. A good place to plonk the list would be Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Watchlist. The list would probably have in the order of 5000+ links. Is that likely to be a problem? Let me know on my talk if there's any more specifics you need.

Also a suggestion - I have no idea if its feasable or not - after each link in the watchlist, would it be possible to show the article size in bytes. That'd be really useful in identifying stubs and sub-stubs. -- I@n 15:47, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Today, I did a move of {{LouisvilleWikiProject}} to {{WikiProject Louisville}}. The template will still place pages into the WikiProject Louisville category. If WatchlistBot pulls articles from the category, then it should work as normal. However, if WatchlistBot actually looks for the template on the talk page, then it should now look for either {{LouisvilleWikiProject}} or the new {{WikiProject Louisville}}. Chinese yuan

I wrote the paragraph originally. What I was trying to say is that during 1911-49, "yuan" was the official name, but sometimes "dollar" is printed on the back. For New Taiwan dollar, the official English name is "dollar", but sometimes, "yuan" was printed. I changed the article a bit. Please review. The grammar is still off, and I can't tell exactly what you're trying to say. Specifically: English translation with "yuan" was often printed on the reverse of the first yuan. But sometimes "dollar" can be found. Is the English translation of "yuan" "dollar"? Right now, it sounds like the first sentence is saying something about the English translation of "yuan" and the second sentence (which is not a full sentence) is saying something about "dollar", and the two are not the same. Oh, wait a minute, is the first translation saying that "yuan" and "dollar" are often printed together, and the second sentence is saying that sometimes only "dollar" appears? And it is true that "dollar" is the English translation of "yuan"? If so, how about "Dollar" is the English translation of "yuan" (earlier in the paragraph). Then, replace these sentences with Sometimes both "yuan" and "dollar" appear on the reverse of the first yuan, and other times "dollar" appears alone? Ingrid 15:49, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Yuan in Chinese is 圓. Almost all banknotes during 1911-1949 were denominated in 圓. The front side is in Chinese. The reverse would be a English translation of the front side, like this one (front back), where 圓 is translated as "yuan". But sometimes, the same 圓 would be translated to "dollar" on the back. Example: front back. Notice the that unit in Chinese in these two examples are both 圓, but the English on the back side is sometimes "yuan", sometimes "dollar". Yuan is more common than dollar.

As fore new Taiwan dollar. The official translation is "dollar", which can be seen from this commemorative folder. Almost no banknotes have English printed on them. But the vertical banknotes between 1949 and 1956, like this one had "yuan" printed on the back. The front still says 圓. Thanks for catching that. How did you find it? It turns out this text substitution is tricky business, since I have to match all the possible existing situations. I did check them, but they still appear correct with two copies of "class" (to me anyway). Ancient mints

One issues that seems to keep cropping up is that one wikiproject determines something is in their sphere and want to delete it, but don't realize that the same thing is a keeper for a different project. Template:WorldCurrencies

Sorry, I should have explained my edit in the edit summary. The world currency templates automatically categorize whatever page they’re on to category:circulating currencies. If that category is added at the bottom of the page, you can choose what letter it is alphabetized under. Otherwise it would go under “T” (for [Template:WorldCurrencies). – Zntrip 01:16, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Okay, let me put it this way: Let's take a template, say Template:Currencies of Africa. If you were to edit this template you would see that “Category:Circulating currencies” is at the bottom of the template. This means that whatever page has Template:Currencies of Africa on it will be automatically categorize in Category:Circulating currencies.

Now, Template:WorldCurrencies has Template:Currencies of Africa on it. Therefore it will automatically be in Category:Circulating currencies, regardless of any edits made to categories listed at the bottom of the edit box on Template:WorldCurrencies.

Also, since Template:WorldCurrencies starts with a “T” it would appear in Category:Circulating currencies under “T”. My edit: [[Category:Circulating currencies|μ]], ensured that Template:WorldCurrencies would appear at the end of the category under “μ”. If you still have trouble with what I’m saying, ask Chochopk, he knows just about everything regarding templates. – Zntrip 04:28, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

With or without Zntrip's revert, Template:WorldCurrencies would be placed under Category:Circulating currencies, Category:Currencies of Africa, etc. This is because Template:WorldCurrencies transcludes all 5 continental nav boxes. historical version (before Zntrip's revert) shows what I just described. What Zntrip did was to override how Template:WorldCurrencies would be sorted under these 6 categories. Instead of T, it's now sorted as μ.

Yes, the template is not a currency. To really exclude Template:WorldCurrencies from the categories, the templates have to be modified slightly to take an optional parameter. With {{#if:{{NAMESPACE}}||[[Category:Cent]]}}, {{NAMESPACE}} evaluates to "Talk" on an article talk page, it evaluates to blank on an article. #if: evaluates to true on non-empty string, and false on empty string. I really appreciate your offer to help out the India project with WatchListBot. Until now we have been tagging the articles using the ABW plug-in. But that does not traverse categories and is very manual. I have a few questions,

1) How do you deal with false positives and people who don't like talk-page banners in general?

2) I was thinking that we should prepare a skip category list before you add India to the list of the projects.

3) Can you handle taskforces? For tamil nadu related categories, the template should read {{WP India|tamilnadu=yes}}. We have about 24 task forces.

4) In the watchlist, can you make all the links show up seperated by hypens like in Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Articles instead of using bullets. That will save time scrolling through the list. Is it possible to turn off the talk pages? Not sure how they help.

1) With categories tagged first, I find that there are very few false positives. Usually, categories either contain only project articles or no project articles. If this is not the case for India, the bot wouldn't work properly. For each project, I maintain an exclusion list. If something is incorrectly tagged, the tag can be removed by hand. If the article is added to the exclusion list, it will be automatically skipped if I retag articles for the same project. If people complain about talk page banners in general, I tell them that it's a standard practice which many projects find useful, and unless/until they create a policy that they shouldn't be used, I'm going to keep tagging.

2) The exclusion list works for categories too. But the way I tag categories is to start at the top-level, probably Category:India, then check each subcategory. If it's obviously part of the project, I tag it. If it's obviously not, I skip it. If it's unclear to me, I ask the project. This is all done semi-manually (I give the bot a list of keywords, like "India". If the keyword is in the category name, I tag automatically. Otherwise, I have to say yes/no).

3) The bot doesn't currently handle task forces, but it would be an interesting project for me to add that capability. The only problem is that since I'm not at all familiar with the subject, it might be really hard for me to tell where categories belong. If the category structure is not split along task force lines, it would not be easy for me to update the bot to handle them. I could always generate a list of categories, and give that to you to tell me what goes where.

4) I can't do a custom format article list, since I use the same code for all the projects. But tagging and updating the list are completely separate. So, you could continue to maintain the article list, and I could still do the tagging for you. When I originally wrote the bot, I included talk pages so changes to talk pages would be included. I think "related changes" might do that automatically though -- do you know?

Ingrid, Task forces are stand-alone projects themselves, but share the project template and some departments like collaboration with the root project. They are generally split on a main category. For example, Tamil Nadu task force starts with Category:Tamil Nadu. If you can add the task force handling at a later time, that is totally fine. I can update the article list myself. I checked and found Related changes does not show the talk page changes. I think I have a good understanding on how this works. Please let me know if I can help you with anything setting it up. It's easier to deal with the task forces right away. I started with Tamil Nadu, since we've been discussing it. I started off trying to tag all relevant categories, but quickly got confused about what related. So, I continued by tagging only categories with "tamil" in the name. The list is at: Wikipedia:WikiProject Tamil Nadu/Categories. Please check it to see if I've tagged anything that doesn't belong (you can just fix the tag). Also, please check if I've left anything out, and if you can give me a list of keywords to include, that would be ideal (I skipped all the neighborhoods, which probably all belong). I have marked a few cats at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tamil Nadu/Categories as not-in-scope. Any sub-cats under them are also not-in-scope. Neighborhoods, villages, suburbs, districts, taluks etc do belong as it is a state taskforce. India project and its task forces stay away from any religion-related cats. And a new question related to task forces: I started running the bot, and tagged 12B and 16 Vayathinile which both already have a WPIndia tag with cinema=yes. For now, the bot doesn't check for that, so I stopped it. But I'm not sure what the correct behavior should be. It's not possible with the current template for me to just add another task force to the existing template -- should the template be modified? Otherwise, I'm afraid others might object to multiple WP India tags on one page. But whatever the project thinks is best, I can modify the bot to work with (I think). Circulating/Obsolete v.s. Current/Defunct

I'm still struggling to find balance with wikipedia and real life (wikipedia is usually much more fun than all the stuff I should be doing, like right now :) It reminds me though, I wanted to talk to you. That page in my user space doesn't list the countries, and all currency articles are referenced by their actual page name. So, related changes gives you a watchlist of currency articles. I thought you might find that helpful. Also, I want to create a template for the yen/yuan, and wondered if the hwan, wen, won, and/or yang should be included? Yeah, I can totally understand the pressure of real life. I am also busy on that too. No pressure =). The related change is a good idea, as the currency unit articles are the "core" articles of this project. Perhaps when the list is done, we can add the related change to the project home page. On yuan/yen, I have to tell you that wen and yang are *not* etymologically the same word as yuan/yen/won/hwan. Funny, 27 grams of 90% pure silver can be referred as so many names, yuan, yen, dollar, peso, and thaler. I did see Template:Denominations by accident. I think Template:Escudo can be deployed, as it is less complex than pound. My plan was to get the list updated. Then, get all of the templates done. Then, make sure all of the templates are deployed on all relevant pages (I've added a couple of links to a couple of the existing templates). Speaking of etymology, I was also planning to create Template:real. Apparently real/rial/riyal are etymologically related, but Cambodian riel is not AFAIK. Yet, it is "similar", so I think it should probably be included. My thought was that similar words should be included, and apparently dissimilar words (lira/pound) should be included as well when they mean the same thing. All of the Asian ones I mentioned seem similar to my western ear, but I'm happy to do whatever you think is best. Currency scans

With regards to your suggestion on having separate templates for banknote art and the resulting scans, I don't think that it's necessary. Under Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp., a "slavish reproduction" of a two-dimensional work has no copyright status of its own, but inherits the status of the original. Therefore, for instance, you can't claim copyright on a scan of US currency; the currency design is PD (as a work of the US federal government) and so is the scan since there is no creative aspect involved in making it. (Although the threshold for creativity is fairly low, technical effort alone does not count under the Bridgeman standard.) See WP:IUP#Public domain for further information. Thanks for the reminder about updating the other pages, it just slipped my mind. I'll take care of it right now. As far as pulliing out the succession box, the developers created a new table namespace recently to make main namespace pages easier to read. The function was supposed to be like a cross between templates and images, without the expectation of being used in multiple pages. It seemed like it would be a great way to handle succession boxes, since the code is so ugly even with the templates we've created. The biggest problems seem to be Category:Texas A&M Aggies football coaches(several people not tagged) as well as Category:People from Texas(several people that I found not tagged, indicating alot not tagged). currency images

I've been looking into the image copyright situation a bit, and have come up with some ideas to help our fair use images stay around. I just uploaded Image:East Africa 1 cent (KM22).jpg. You can see the tags and text I used. I noticed you've been getting warnings about missing fair use rationales and thought you might like to copy what I used. It's at User:Mom2jandk/FU obsolete coin. You can subst it with the linked page name as a parameter. I'd make it a template, but it's considered bad form to put a fair use rationale in a template (for reasons I don't understand). It's specific to a coin that is no longer produced or sold by the original country/bank and used in a page about the currency (rather than a page specific to the coin), but shouldn't take much modification to make it more general. As I work with more images, I imagine I'll make more such pages for other cases I come across. I just used it, and haven't checked with anyone that it will stand up to the recent harsher restrictions on fair use, but I think I followed the policy at WP:FUC. Let me know if you find this useful, or have any questions or comments. Also, I've put detailed info into East African shilling for the coins. I plan to add more images as I have time, and do something similar for banknotes once I get my SCWPM which I finally ordered. If you get a minute, I'm always interested in your thoughts, especially since you've put so much effort into standardizing page formats. This is an interesting issue. I'd like to discuss the problem of templates on Wikipedia first. Templates are often used for navigational boxes, where the same content must repeat on several articles. But editors with less technical/scientific training tend to make new navigational boxes by copying and pasting code and then modify the content. This is a bad practice. Templates can also be used to generate other templates. This issue on navigational templates has been somewhat alleviated. For example, {{navbox generic}} generates {{Currencies of Africa}}, which is in turned transcluded by many pages. Another good example is {{languageicon}}-{{zh icon}}. Bad examples include {{Money-stub}}-{{Coin-stub}} and {{Numismaticnotice}}-{{Electron}}. There should be a "root" template for stub and a root template for project banner that is similar to {{navbox generic}}.

Why do I talk about that? Because the same problem exists among Category:Image copyright tags. If you ask me, I think template is underutilized, and it is way underutilized in copyright tags. For example, {{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}} and {{PD-USGov-Military-Army}} (and possibly more) should consolidate. The same principle applies to fair use tags as well. Why do we have {{Non-free currency}} and {{Non-free currency - UK}}? IMHO, the currency tags should be partitioned into 3 tiers.

1. PD (Somebody would say PD images should go to commons, and I agree. But there are always some that qualifies PD and lives on en. We should provide a tag for that to easily identify those.
2. Conditional, like {{Money-EU banknote}} and {{NZ-Currency}}
3. Fair use. Such template must enforce the editor to enter information required by {{Non-free media rationale}}, or better yet, fill in Purpose for you.

What you say makes a lot of sense. When I did some reading about templates awhile back, I remember reading that it's hard on the servers to have templates that transclude other templates, I think. If that's not true though, I definitely agree. I'd also like to create {{numis cite SCWC2002}}, {{numis cite tmmh}} with a country parameter, and others so I don't have to remember any of the details.

As far as the fair use rationale, there's been some controversy surrounding User:Betacommand. As you know, he's been tagging fair use images for deletion when they don't have correct or complete source/copyright/fair use information. Others have suggested that he add the missing info when he can. He argues that you can't just use a template, and someone who doesn't know about the image and how it's used can't easily tell what the appropriate tags and rationale are. Also, I think the argument about using a template for fair use rationale is that each rationale should be unique. Let me see if I can find some of the discussions I've been reading about it....

Last time I check, there are at least close to 100,000 articles that transclude indirectly. Machines and computing powers are cheap. Time spent by humans is not. I'm aware of Betacommand. I guess everyone is. I don't think we should intentionally make it hard for editors with legit fair use rationale. Nor do I agree that each fair use rationale is unique. What about {{Non-free television screenshot}}, {{Non-free game screenshot}}? About numismatic reference, I have created {{Standard numismatics external links}}. It has been transluded by almost all circulating currencies. Progress can be tracked at User:Chochopk/Currency article status (column 6). Dove and I have been adding those. The difference is that these links are listed under "External links", not "References". About book reference, I believe the best way is to have one template for SCWC and another for SWCPM, with edition being a parameter. I definitely don't see a problem with a template for a fair use rationale. But I'm more interested in making sure my images don't get deleted than arguing about policy (even when it's not actually policy). I've noticed you using the standard links, and think it's great! I have finished the preliminary of the book templates. Please take a look at User:Chochopk/Template sandbox 1. The change will be backward-compatible. I am proposing:

• More choices (rows)
• Accurately reflect the authors and editors. These books cannot be edited by the same people forever.

Caveat: some books only have editors. The result would look like the second bullet point.

• Use 13 digit ISBN (new standard)

Note

• The Amazon and "Editor/author (cover)" columns will be deleted. They are helpers for me to derive the last two columns.
• The authors and editors are derived from the cover. The info from Amazon is unstable. Sometimes amaozon.com and amazon.co.uk give different result.

I glanced at it. Don't have time for more right now. It looks good. I think it's probably a good thing to put a link to the picture, since that's a sure way to know you have the right version. Another place to look for images is http://www.bn.com which has the right one for the 2006 SCWC. I never intended to leave the choices so limited, I just picked the ones that I saw already being referenced to start with, which includes 1991 SCWC which you didn't include (I'm sure by accident). But as usual, your thoroughness is great. You can see in the SCWPM that I've already done choices for authors/editors. I've been wrestling with the author/editor situation since I started this. The editor field in cite book is intended for books with one editor chapters by different authors. It doesn't really work for us (since it adds "in"). Also, the co-authors field doesn't work properly (it doesn't include "and"). So, that's why I used author to include all of it. It's probably better though to use other for the editor when there is an author, since that puts it after the title, and makes the separation more obvious than just a ; as I have it now. When I get some more time at the computer, I'll implement some of the examples you've collected, and update what I'd already done to show you what I mean (I don't think it's a problem to experiment a little with the already deployed template format, since before the template there was no standardization anyway). I stayed with ISBN-10 since my ISBN links go to amazon, which only uses -10. I'm sure I'm not the only one using amazon, and want the links to be clickable. I don't know when I'll get to the SCWPM, but I'll update that as well. For the documentation table, I kept "date=" instead of "Code" since I think it's more obvious to a less sophisticated user what that means. Let me know if there's anything else. I'm so bad at staying away from wikipedia when I'm working on an interesting project, *sigh*. Anyway, I think we should stick with what's on the front cover, since in the other books, I don't think Krause and Mishler are even referenced inside. I wanted to find somewhere else that sites some of these books to see how they do it, but it seems libraries with online catalogs all use abbreviated citations now. But it doesn't really matter. The point is that we're being consistent, and it will be easy to update it later if we find a need. I thought the easiest way to keep track would be to run a bot to find all the articles in the project and generate a list (searching for "Standard Catalog of World Coins/Paper Money". Then go through manually and replace, removing articles from the list as they're handled. Since the bot wouldn't update wikipedia, it wouldn't need approval. Regarding your comments:

• Date v.s. year. It does make more sent to put date. And "date" is more concise. But that means we have to backfill the existing tables. Luckily, "What links here" from the standard notice can give us a definitive list.

half vs. ½. Most coins don't have Arabic numerals on them, but we still use the numerals in tables.

• ‰. That's the standard User:Timur lenk insisted on (for precious metal only). He's migrated to the Hungarian wikipedia. I did forget about "silver".
• "Remark" or "Remarks", that doens't really matter to me. I'm not sure. Timur lenk or I are not native English speakers. But "note" or "notes" may confuse with banknotes.

Some other thoughts:

• Where should we put catalog number? Is it fair to use SCWC/PM number? Would it arouse protest from American or Canadian numismatics where there may be a different set of well established cataloging system? How do we standardize?

Date, ½, Remarks -- all fine. Whatlinkshere is very useful, but hard to keep track of what's already done. If you ever want me to generate a list of articles containing something, just let me know. My bot is great at making lists, so it's a small matter to have it search for something specific. What do you think of having standard footnotes for the table, for things like precious metal content, catalog number (see below)? I'm not sure because the tables are often used multiple times in one page, and I don't want to clutter them, but since they're not templates, the footnotes would appear at the bottom of the page, right? I don't know, just a thought.

Since the precious metal article doesn't even use ‰, I'm hesitant. If it's used in a lot of places already though, I could be convinced to just footnote it. I do think it needs some explanation (probably whatever way we write it), since a casual reader may have no idea what we're trying to say.

Catalog number is a tricky one. It is such vital information for a collector (in my experience, it's the main way individual coins are identified), but so obscure for others. If there are multiple standards, I don't think there would be any harm in listing more than one catalog number. I think SCWC has tried to use existing formats when they are available, like Y# for many Asian currencies. I had asked about how to cite the references for the tables, since there's no obvious place to put it, and someone commented that a footnote describing the catalog number would probably be helpful. I agree in theory, but haven't been able to figure out exactly what it should say.

Backfilling "date", and "remarks" can be done within AWB w/o invoking a bot too. It's just that the list is saved as a local file, which eliminates the possibility of collaboration. It is possible to add things to {{Standard banknote table notice}} and {{Standard coin table notice}}, which is placed at the bottom of each table. Wikipedia:WikiProject Numismatics/Style/Currency article says that it's 2.5 px per mm (so that it's to scale across all pages). But if the size of the coin is unknown, fall back to 60 px per side. We can get the size from catalog, but they will be estimate, as there could be two level of errors, printing, and measuring. I don't know if it is appropriate to put the sizes if the sizes are measured by the editors. Nevertheless, I can still rescale the images according to the sizes we measure. Better than nothing. Cite TMMH and GFD

I'm beginning to review these two templates. I notice that the mapping between the url (or the url segment) and what's shown to the readers is done within the template. The way Template:Standard numismatics external links is done is that the editor has to supply both of these manually. This is also the way {{Imdb name}} is done. But the numismatic reference is somewhat different. The number of possible pages are somewhat limited, at least in comparison to IMDB. But an automatic mapping requires a lot of initial set up. My original reasoning for creating these templates was 1) existing references were not at all consistent, 2) I got frustrated every time I had to look up what exactly the details of the references were 3) Inline citations were long and ugly when editing. So, I wanted to simplify referencing for the end user, even if that meant a more complicated template (one time complicated, many times easy). Specifically, I didn't want to have to look up the 2-letter code for the country just to reference it. But it's not a big deal to me, if you feel it should be changed. The next question that I have is the direction of mapping. Currently, they are set up as "code → url segment" and "code → title shown to the readers". I would like to simply that as "url segment → title shown to the readers". The reason I chose the url segment as the key instead of the other way around is because I feel that the url segment is less likely to change in the future, while country name is more likely???? I think it's easier to remember to use the country name. I'm not sure which would change more often -- if the country name changes, there's a decent chance the page name will also change. It won't be too hard to fix by bot, even once there are a lot of transclusions, since there won't be any thought involved. That is, what we're doing now, you have to check, since there's no standard formattting. Once we switch to templates, it will be standard and a bot or AWB can easily find all and change them. Well, why do you have to go and think of everything? I don't know that it matters too much. As long as we use something that makes sense, and document it in the template docs. I'm feeling a bit irritated right now by the idea that coin images don't belong in articles unless they're discussed in prose rather than a table. I don't want to argue with Betacommand, Durin, or anyone else about it, but it just doesn't make sense to me. I may need to take a step back from wikipedia until this is resolved -- one of the reasons I enjoy participating here is imagining what the numismatics articles will be one day. 2. Is there a manual way to run the WatchlistBot for a wikiproject, without working with the source? WP 1.0 Bot already has this capability.

Idea for WatchlistBot

Would it be possible to add a parameter to {{WikiProject Louisville}} like "watchexclude=yes" whereas the WatchlistBot won't add it to the article list used for project watching? Or is there another similar solution we can pursue? I can think of a couple of ways to do this. Either a list somewhere in User:WatchlistBot's user space, similar to the exclusion list for tagging, or a parameter in the tag, as you've suggested (which wouldn't make things easy for me, unless the parameter put pages into a category too). I don't know. I'm not spending much time here right now, so I'm going to stop updating the Louisville watchlist for now so I don't keep overwriting your work. Mom2jandk - I would wait to see if concensus develops to actually modify the template to function that way (half of the reason why I haven't actually done it myself). See the discussion over at WikiProject China[4]. Personally I have no preference on which format to use, but majority support in the discussion is to simply use the BCE/CE format alone. Hello, Mom2jandk. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.
