MiszaBot II misfiring discussion

I have started a discussion on a major mis-fire of the bot this morning. Discussion is at: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#MiszaBot II mis-archiving this page.. - TexasAndroid 14:54, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've blocked it until the mess is sorted. Evilclown93 15:11, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How very un-nice of you, since you are aware I'm sorting things out and have it under control. Миша13 15:12, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Archive frequency

I love your archiver but it probably doesn't need to run twice a day on most pages (well at least, not on mine). Would it be worth adding an archive period parameter? So if I set archive period = 4 it'll only run if there isn't any record of a page archiving in the past four days. This may seem like a small thing but it does have a knock-on effect that might be difficult to appreciate at first. Every time an archive file is altered, the next time HBC Archive Indexerbot runs it rebuilds my entire 800kb archive index. I've also asked User:H if he'll add an index period parameter to his bot but it strikes me that the main issue here is that the archives are being updated more frequently than necessary. --Tony Sidaway 16:02, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It runs only once per day on most pages (that includes user talks), except for wikipedia and wikipedia talk, where it's twice. Adding an archive period would be quite tricky, but I guess I can resolve it by rearranging cron - reduce all namespaces to 1 run/day and just schedule and extra run on just the more active pages (AN,ANI). Миша13 16:12, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I was thinking it would be a simple matter. Look at the last timestamp on the last edit by self to the current archive target and only archive if it's greater than or equal to N days ago. --Tony Sidaway 18:33, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MiszaBot trackers

Hi, I'm not certain but does it look like the MiszaBot trackers are reporting zeros for all the image categories that are left as galleries. I just want to make sure and if so, I'll add Nogallery tags to all the categories. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 17:24, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have mistakenly deleted one or more screenshots from Wikipedia:Main Page/Screenshots within the last week. Please restore. Robert K S 14:45, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not mistakenly - automatically and within policy. And it has happenned for the second time now. Face the fact that these are fair use images not being used in articles, thus they violate copyright policy. It is the second time that BetacommandBot (talk · contribs) has tagged them and the second time my bot deleted them. This might happen in a different configuration (different tagger/different deleter) and be equally valid. Besides, many other people have deleted images from that page, not just myself (and I have a feeling they will keep vanishing in the following days - BCBot must've had a run recently). Interestingly, quite a few days must've passed before anyone noticed. (This was the same case when they were deleted the first time round.) This only proves the page is of little interest (just look at how little incoming links it has) and it's not useful enough to put an effort into thinking of an exemption and rationale for it. One idea raised on the MfD was to crop the images to exclude interface elements. This has not been done since (over two months). I am not leaning towards restoring them that swiftly this time, at least not unless someone's putting serious effort into fixing this copyright violation (will not wheel war over this either). Wikipedia:Wikiquette_alerts

Hi Misza13, (thinks why am I talking to a bot?) on the Wikipedia:Wikiquette_alerts page it would be a fine thing if a bot could archive all sections that had a {{resolved}} template in them - but are you capable of that? This is just a technicla enquiry at this stage as I have not yet sounded out opinion of te other editors of the page, kind regards, sbandrews (t) 15:46, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, the bot doesn't support archiving by matching for keywords - only by date of newest thread. Миша13 16:48, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion Atze Schröder

14:06, 4 July 2007 Misza13 (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:Atze Schröder DPMA 39747033.9.pdf" (Image with no copyright tag. (WP:CSD#I4))

Hi Misza13, I attributed the source of the image, which was a PDF print from a public register. Please check and perhaps I need to revise syntax, but the content was properly attributed, for sure.

Phellmon 12:41, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Attribution is one thing, an appropriate copyright tag is the other - these are absolutely required. I can restore the image if you can provide a template to tag the file. Миша13 14:19, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Deletion of Image:Char.jpg

I would like to drop a little message in regarding your deletion of Image:Char.jpg. Whilst not in use in Wikipedia's mainspace, the image was in use on a draft article for the subject in question (ie the locations of StarCraft). I realise I'm not supposed to have non-free images on user sub-pages, but it makes life much easier to be able to add applicable images to the draft as we go rather than having to upload them all in one go once the article is moved into Wikipedia's mainspace. I'm not going to reupload the image until the article goes live, but please could you refrain from deleting anymore StarCraft-related images in the near future that appear to have been orphaned without checking to see if they link to any drafts. Thanks. -- Sabre 15:43, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm deleting images automatically - you must've held the draft in your userspace for too long. For purposes of visual composition you can use Image:Example.jpg until the last moment, whereupon you can substitute them for the final images - that's a generally suggested practice. That said, I think I'll leave my script be and let it continue to delete images that violate copyright policy. Besides, I bet you have been notified of the problematic status of the image, just like you are now regarding some 20+ images. Best, Миша13 16:17, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

archiving bot

Hello Misza13, I read your file in botwiki, can you help me to run this script in italian wikipedia :) or is too difficult ? thanks a lot --dario vet (talk) 21:34, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Discussionbot.py is not a file created by me (see the file credits), so I wouldn't be able to help much with that. If you meant archivebot.py however, it is not well-suited for non-english languages yet, sorry. Миша13 13:49, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bot archiving with dates in titles

I just made a suggestion here that it might be easier for us to find an archived page we're looking for if the page that the bot creates for the titles includes the date rate of the archive, for example:

Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive268 7/8/2007-7/10/2007

instead of the current:

Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive268

I dont know if its possible to do this. --Matt57 (talkcontribs) 16:10, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Extremely complicated and not necessarily useful. I don't see how it could be done - when archives are created, their name (according to this scheme) could not be known yet - more messages can be added to the archive, which would cause the range to extend. Миша13 13:46, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, then, could the date of archiving be put into the title? Archive268 7/16/2007 - this would help as much. That means the bot puts down the date it creates that archive at the end of the title. The reason I'm suggesting this is that the archive number doesnt tell us anything about the date range. --Matt57 (talkcontribs) 03:16, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Image:Wikipedia minilogo.gif

I noticed you deleted Image:Wikipedia minilogo.gif due to it being orphaned non-free. I am under the impression that images copyrighted by Wikimedia can be used in the project space. Has something changed? --- RockMFR 20:29, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also questioning all the many other copyright-by-Wikimedia deletions in your deletion log today. --- RockMFR 20:30, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
HAHAHA. You have to admire the ruthless efficiency of it all. Someone adds Category:Non-free Logos to {{Non-free Wikimedia logo}}. This causes BetacommandBot to include Category:CopyrightByWikimedia images in its ruthless orphan hunt. So it tags these images as unused non-free content. And 7 days later another bot comes along and deletes them all. Ruthless mechanical efficiency.
On the more general point, there is no specific policy governing the use of Wikimedia logos, neither giving permission nor restricting their use. The default position (i.e. WP:NONFREE) would say they should be deleted, but they have historically been tolerated on the hope that the WMF might someday clarify the situation. Dragons flight 20:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. The fact that for a whole week noone noticed that the image is soon to become a speedy candidate is what bothers me, especially since it's so heavily used. Anyway, after a short glance through my deletion log, I couldn't spot any obvious images that could likewise fall into that category. Regardless, I've put the {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} template on a whitelist for now. Миша13 21:15, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Search "wiki" in your deletion logs today. That shows a few dozen which might be CopyrightByWikimedia. Google cache shows some more [1]. I think the whole situation is rather funny. Wikimedia doesn't want to release these under a free license, they don't want to answer questions about how these logos can be used on the project, BetacommandBot "helps" tag as fast as it can, and then it all gets deleted without a check by human eyes. One day we're going to wake up and the logo in the corner will finally be gone :) --- RockMFR 23:08, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think I have restored most of them. I don't have a cache of the next page of the category, but that's mostly covered by searching for "wiki" in the deletion log. Миша13 12:47, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This reminds me of Wikipedia:Main Page/Screenshots, a fair use gallery (many images were CopyrightByWikimedia too) that was obliterated regardless... Are we talking any more images or just this one? Миша13 20:43, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Archive Key

Don't worry, I don't want the archive key. :-) I was just wondering what the purpose of archiving talk threads to non-subpages would be. « ANIMUM » 00:15, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look on WP:ANI for an example - it could probably be done to a subpage, but for historical reasons it stays this way. User talk:BetacommandBot is another example. Миша13 19:00, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist Sorter

I've been using your Watchlist sorter and find that it makes like very easy. I appreciate your work. Would it be possible to add a link, perhaps next to the diff and hist links, which would unwatch a page? It would be much simpler than going to the list and picking out what you do not want. Thanks JodyB yak, yak, yak 14:27, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That'd add some extra processing requirements - it already takes a longer while to rearrange the watchlist even for a medium-sized list (500-1000 items). I have always found WP:POPUPS to be sufficient - there is an "unwatch" item in an article's popup menu. Миша13 22:43, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What is the source of thy shamanic power?

gvim + :%s/\(.*\)/*[[:\1]]/ ;-) —Миша13 17:35, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would be very grateful to thee if thou changest all my such lists in that manner, since it is so easy for thee and so difficult for unenlightened, otherwise I am not able to track thematical articles. --Quellem 17:55, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also I would like to know the limit of my personal space for these experiments. --Quellem 19:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is no upper limit, I think, but there's another issue to consider: veeeeeery long pages may lock up a browser (mine certainly begs for mercy when I open your "watchlist"), especially when they consist of many many item lists. You might consider splitting your lists further; if not by subtopics then alphabetically, perhaps? Миша13 19:18, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I give up. I have made too many mistakes. I really need such a group of watchlists, but I have to take every subcategory into consideration, which turns down to be outright boring. I need a group of lists of everything in the category 'Space' and categories therein. Let the first list contain categories 'Spaceflight', 'Space law', 'Space exploration' and 'Space technology' and everything therein except stubs which are really called thus.

The second one - 'Space science' and 'Astronomy' except such irrelevant subcategories like 'Astronomers', 'Astronomy education', 'Astronomy events', 'History of astronomy', 'Astronomical myths', 'Astronomy organizations', 'Astronomy people' and 'Astronomy prizes', and also except everything related to Solar System.

Subcategories relevant to the process of research with instruments on Earth, such as 'Astronomy data and publications', 'Astronomical observatories', 'Astronomical instruments', 'Planetaria' and 'Telescopes' should fill the third group.

The fourth group should consist of everything within 'Planetary science', 'Solar System' and 'Sun'.

The fifth group must contain designated stubs found anywhere.

Easiness of this task depends on you having an instrument that can include into lists not only subcategories, but subcategories within subcategories. If thou hast such a program, this is a ten-minute task, and I would easily pick up changes in Wikipedia related to space. Am I abusing thy trust? I hope no. --Quellem 10:07, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now every page relating to space is found with the help of category tree and listed at the list of astronomical topics. But thou canst guess what mess this is. --Quellem 14:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, now this is getting slightly seriously confusing. It would take a quite complex and specifically tailored bot to do that task. However, when you visit a particular category page, say Category:Planetary science and click on "Related changes" from the toolbox, the result should be quite similar as if the articles were listed on an ordinary wikipage: Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Planetary science. So, you could just keep a list of bookmarks to various Special:Recentchangeslinked pages. Миша13 18:11, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

UAA

Hey, when blocking those obviously bad-faith and offensive names, consider using a hardblock. They usually don't give up, and it deters them from doing much more. It also blocks their main account, and should stop them doing it. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:46, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Image:Irancrudescan.jpg

Thank you for providing administrative services to Wikipedia. The image you deleted, Image:Irancrudescan.jpg was being worked on by the graphics lab in an effort to produce an image which conforms to wikipedia policy. We realize that Image:Irancrudescan.jpg did not conform to policy, but nonetheless it was one of the source images for this effort, and it may have been vital to our success. We ask that you check in the future if an image is linked to by the graphics lab, or if it has the {{glhangon}} tag before deleting it. Thanks, --BsayUSD [Talk] [contribs] 16:53, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reluctantly, I'll put your template on my template whitelist. Do you want the image restored? Миша13 16:35, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a question: you have recently deleted Image:Spreadsheet.png ([2]) as a non-free copyrighted image. I cannot see it now, but as far as I recall it was a screenshot of OpenOffice.org Calc, a free, open-source software. Does that make the screenshot non-free? This image for instance seems to cause no problems. 131.111.8.97 01:26, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Screenshots are usually copyrighted because they show elements of OS interface and such (I'm not even sure if screenshots of free software can themselves be released as free images). Given that the image wasn't used, I'd say it's a little loss anyway (Wikipedia is not a media repository). Миша13 16:39, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting images

I just logged into my account and I found the following message:

22:55, 11 July 2007 Misza13 (Talk | contribs) deleted "Image:Alexis-laree-in-tna.jpg" (Unused unfree copyrighted image. (WP:CSD#I5))

You may want to check with individuals who upload images before you decide take them down. As I noted in the description for this image when I uploaded it, this image WAS provided by the copyright holder (TNA Entertainment) to Mickie James to be used as she saw fit for online distribution. Ms. James herself provided it to me for postings.

I'm not upset, as the photo is dated and probably should have been replaced with a newer photo from one of her performances with World Wrestling Entertainment. I just would have appreciated it if you had asked me about it first. It does seem a bit rude to just go around replacing or deleting other individual's contributions without even a courtesy note.

Regards, Kevin Fields webmaster, MickieJames.com

With all due respect, I have no obligation whatsoever to inform the uploader of every image I delete (I delete several hundred images every day). The image was deleted within policy - non-free images that are not in use are deleted, regardless of rationale - it's that simple. Миша13 16:51, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have a beautiful weekend!

With you I shall ever be;
Over land and sea
My thoughts will companion you;
With yours shall my laughter chime,
And my step keep time
In the dusk and dew
With yours in blithesome rhyme;
In all of your joy shall I rejoice,
On my lips your sorrow shall find a voice,
And when your tears in bitterness fall
Mine shall mingle with them all;
With you in waking and dream I shall be,
In the place of shadow and memory,
Under young springtime moons,
And on harvest noons,
And when the stars are withdrawn
From the white pathway of the dawn.

Mary Darby Robinson

Have a beautiful weekend, dear Misza!

Phaedriel

User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo

The box in the howto says "Before requesting automatic archiving on an article's talk page, please establish a consensus that archiving is really needed there." Shouldn't that be "setting up" automatic archiving, as any user can technically do it? —AldeBaer 01:06, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

That wording comes from the times when I was holding all configuration settings and users had to literally request archiving. Still, by putting that template, you are requesting it to archive your page, don't you? ;-) Anyway, I have changed the wording as you suggest. Cheers, Миша13 09:34, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and of course you're right it's indeed a request. You see, I'm currently into figuring how to best formulate technical manuals. I feel it's often a question of which details to omit —even if it means slight technical inaccuracies— for the sake of improved comprehensibility and usability of the wiki interface, with particular regard to new and not-so-tech-savvy users who primarily need help to get things up and running. —AldeBaer 01:29, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for being so helpful.

Thank you! :)

Thank you for your beautiful words and warm wishes on my birthday, dear friend! I took a well-deserved one-day wikibreak and spent it with my family and my friends... and had an actual beer after months of forced abstinence! :) Of course, there's no way I'd forget about you, so I saved a great, tasty piece of chocolate cake just for you - but sorry, no beer left! Again, thank you so much for taking the time to wish me well, dear Misza! Love, Phaedriel - 05:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC) [reply]
