I don't know if you noticed, but our "NBC Universal Television" buddy[1] is back to moving pages with no cleanup. ABC TV is now at ABC (broadcasting), breaking at least 50 links (I don't really have a strong opinion on whether that is significantly better than American Broadcasting Company, or vice versa), but he also moved American Movie Classics to American Movie Channel--I've moved it back, based on not only 100 to 1 hits for 'classics' over 'channel', but also from what I can find, 'classics' is still the 'real' name, as well. Birmingham, Alabama

Reasons for removing the pronunciation and colloquialism:

• The distinction with Birmingham, UK is not etymological, so the pronunciation difference is immaterial.
• Pronunciation guides are less important in an encyclopedia article than a dictionary.
• The local pronunciation is a matter of culture, not fact. Los Angeles is properly pronounced "loss ANjiliss" by most English-speaking Americans, and properly pronounced "loce AHNhaylayce" by most Spanish speakers.
• In any case, these are certainly not the first ideas to be presented in the article. (See Birmingham, UK or New Orleans, Louisiana for examples of including local pronunciation in the body of the article.)

I suggest we collaborate on improving the Culture section to reflect actual local culture instead of just bragging about all our art galleries. If you feel it's important, why not add "B'ham" to the City Nickname box in the table? Dystopos

Thanks for the comments re: ATWT.

To answer your question, yes I do remember Vens from the Mediadomain boards, and have often wondered what became of him. I had a great deal of respect for his appraisals of the show back then, though he was perhaps a bit more enthusiastic about Lorraine Broderick's work than I was.

As for the issue of bias, soap fans certainly do have their agendas (myself included), but the overtness of opinion that had been inserted into the ATWT entry is what prompted me to begin making some edits there. As someone who has watched the show since 1982, I felt it was important to correct a couple of instances where blame was demonstrably misplaced (such as pinning the mass-exodus of so many cast members circa 1995 on Backus and Packer) -- as well as to expand upon the instances where credit for successes was due.

Thanks too for the technical tips. I'll undoubtedly learn more as I go. I really hadn't expected to add so much to the entry, or become a registered user -- but now that I've gone and done it, I fear this will begin to suck up huge chunks of my free time (something I don't exactly have lots of -- I'm a grad student). If nothing else, I'd like to add a bit more about Irna Phillips to the ATWT entry when I have more energy, and I could probably do some work on the radio soaps somewhere.

Dawson's Creek

Hi. Hope all is well. I've started working on trying to address some of the objections raised the last time Dawson's Creek was nominated as an FAC (so far I've added a couple pics--yet to do is move most of the cast and crew to a separate article; I'm thinking of Extended cast and crew of Dawson's Creek--do you have any better suggestions, or happen to know of comparable article title precendents I should follow), as well as a couple potential objections (I beefed up the intro and added an awards section--I was surprised they were all redlinks. Are we really missing articles on all those awards, or am I just using incorrect names?). I think it would make a good FA, given its breadth and depth. Also, not being particularly interested in the show, I haven't read the synopsis, but of what I have read of it, the writing quality seems quite up to snuff. Anyway, since you're more of a TV guy than me, expecially when it comes to TV-related FAs, I was wondering if you could take a look at it, when you get a chance, and let me know if you see any remaining inadequacies or potential objections. (Oh, and I plan to ask the main contributor User:PedanticallySpeaking to kill/fill the Dawson Leery redlink--seems like there should be something for the lead/titular character.) Hi. Did I just imagine it, or did you do a whole schedule for various TV seasons - showing when (time and day of the week) various shows were broadcast? Hi and thanks for the message - being on the wrong side of the pond we don't these US shows - and so some of these actors are completely unknown in the UK. My gripe with that entry was the lack of information to make it notable - especially not knowing anything about the chap. Brent Collins

It looked to me like you described his health and death from Marfan syndrome, bu the link to the IMD database had no more info. I am curious about his health because the account makes no sense medically. No one grows suddenly in their 40s. The cartilaginous parts of growing bones that we call epiphyses are long closed by several years of sex hormones (what we call puberty). I can not even imagine a condition that could suddenly make some one start getting a lot taller in later or middle adult life. The business about Marfan syndrome is possible: it is a congenital disorder of connective tissue-- you can't suddelnly get it as an adult. Marfan s. can lead to weakness of the wall of the aorta and sudden death. It usually makes people grow a bit more in childhood and end up tall but if it occurs in someone who has some form of dwarfism, the extra childhood growth might not occur and it would never be suspected he had the condition. I have not heard of that combination but I can certainly imagine it. Do you know for certain Brent Collins had dwarfism? Do you know what kind? Was it obvious he was getting taller in the last year, or did someone make that up because they heard he died of Marfan s, and that people with Marfan s are tall? The account of his health and death just sounds impossible and ignorant as it stands, but if you can give me a source, I will try and figure it out and make it medically accurate. Thanks for your comment. I do appreciate that what I removed is evidence, but it's still in the history of the page. The reason I remove personal attacks is because they sour a discussion and derail it. Instead of discussing the subject, people were discussing whether or not this person or that was a poopyhead. More Bandit

It never occured to me to check the edit history for a B-Movie Bandit edit on the Judith Chapman article, especially since the new edits are all positive. Probably an honest mistake at this point. I tried catching her at the restaurant the other night, but she's spending huge amounts of time in LA doing that soap. I talked to her partner James about the article and he was rather enthusiastic about it. I'll e-mail her and James and try to get some more info. Republics

Need your help and/or advice. The British Wikipedian Republican Party sought fit to delete Wikinfo:Classical definition of republic from Wikipedia. There is a terrible brouhaha at Talk:Republic. They won't even allow an external link! SimonP really doesn't know what he is doing. They deleted the Classical definition of republic and created mixed government and politeia instead. The official title of mixed government is a Republic and the Romans translated "politiea" as Republic. And then to top it off the new article Classical republicanism doesn't refer to the Classical republics of Crete, Sparta, Solonic Athens, or Rome but to Machiavelli's ideology. How can that be when Venice in the 13th century instituted a mixed government and called herself a "Republic".

With Jwrosenwieg and Kim Bruning there was a tacit agreement a year ago to have republic be the modern meaning and a [Classical definition of republic] to describe the ancient republics of Hellas and Rome and their influence. To say the least the "Republic section" is all messed up. We need some clarification. I have new information but User:Snowspinner won't let me bring this back up for undelete. (I do grant that a little bit of the Classical definition is original but the rest is not.) I will not let Sparta be called anything but a republic! I will not let the British wikipedian modern republicans strip Sparta, (my heritage and roots) of her rightful name. She is a Classical republic and needs to be called such! Gay Icon Project

No clue. It might have been vandalism of the original list that I merged from. This, User:Philwelch, and the talk pages of every page that I categorized all explain what I was doing last night. If you feel knowledgeable enough to say for certain that they are not gay icons, feel free to decategorize them.

However, just to give you an idea of why I think lists like that should be merged into categories: the claim that Kelly Ripa, Sally Jessy Raphael, Margaret Thatcher(!), Condoleeza Rice(!), and others were gay icons was already present in Wikipedia. But that information, incorrect as it may have been, was invisible to editors. By categorizing, we make the claimed information more visible by having it in two places (the category listing and the article) instead of just one. You may have never wandered over to Gay icon, noticed suspicious information, and challenged it. But now that I've categorized, you did have a chance to notice and challenge suspicious claims. Wikipedia is helped by this sort of thing.

I'm looking into expanding the project to search and merge all lists into relevant categories if it can be done, but that would require community consensus, scripting, and help. However, this categorization effort for gay icons seems like a decent test case for applying this general principle across the board. Philwelch 22:47, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Violet Carson

Hey! I've noticed that you added the category 'Classical pianists' to the article about Violet Carson. However, no piano is even mentioned in the article. A classical pianist is IMO someone that performs/records classical piano music (that is, Chopin, Beethoven etc.). Does she fit into this group? Or was she just an actress whose roles sometimes consisted of playing the piano? That would probably make her a pianist, but not a classical pianists. Either way, a paragraph or at least some sentences should be written about it in the article, otherwise it's pointless to put her in the Pianists category at all. Schiavo archives

Okay, now that we've got the fact that you're no longer deleting my comments out of the way... :-)

I don't see the point of what you're doing with the archive summary. It just doesn't make any sense. Why would you remove the links from the summary? If you were removing the summaries I would understand but as it is now, we've got a floating set of links and a non-wikied summary. I'm going to change it (not revert it) and let's see what we can agree on. Your float just doesn't seem right. (wait a few minutes for me to make my changes)

Erica Kane "Having it All"book

Hi, I notice you took out the Erica Kane book image from her page because you weren't sure if it was published or not.

It is in fact a real book (although a very poorly written one) in which Erica talks about how she has it all and gives advise on how you can have it all too. It was published by ABC Daytime in 1997 ( I assume as part of the Shop the Soaps thing)

Articles concerning GLBT and Gay Icon categories

I'm writing to you about two articles concerning these categories one- Elagabalus does not have the categories and I think it might need one or both of them. The second, Eleanor Roosevelt, has both of them and I think there probably needs to be some discussion at some point on the matter. Since you created the Gay Icons category, I am seeking your advice on the matters. Elagabalus is a more remote figure you may want to read his article, which I'm hoping to nominate as a FAC soon, in relation to Gay Icons-- he may have met the criteria for one in the past, I really don't know about now. The Eleanor Roosevelt article is a mess right now so I'd prefer to discuss her at a latter date, maybe a few weeks, just wanted to let you know I was thinking about it. Elagabalus is really more or less my priority now in my I think he should definitely qualify even the most conservative historian's opinon of LGBT. Gay Icon is a where I really draw a blank and require your experitse. I'd really rather wait on Eleanor Roosevelt the issues is somewhat controverisal and complecated and the article is a mess. You are, ofcourse, welcome to begin a discussion at Eleanor Roosevelt on the issue, but I have finals this week and won't be able to dedicate the time required to discussing the matter. PoF articles

Hi. I've tagged the image, it's a promotional shot, thus fair use. About the articles, indeed I created those when I was a newbie. Probably wouldn't have done that now (would have made character reviews within the main PoF article). I only created all that stuff because at the time this tv show, which is an acknowledged pop hit from the 90's was completely absent from the project. I wanted to get it in (with the typical overenthusiasm of a newbie). I'm not such a fan of the show, so it's fairly safe to say that I won't be expanding those articles on the characters. I don't know if it's worth the trouble of consolidating them all in the main article though, but I would not oppose any efforts in that direction. Regards, Redux 00:45, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

Hello Mike. You'll see now if you refer to the VfD discussion of Lisa Donahue that the discussion is now closed. This is what I was attempting to explain earlier when I re-listed the article for deletion. I never actually nominated it myself. My only point was that the VfD process never ran it's true course. I had similar problems with U.S. regions. We created the postion of an elected Coordinator of the project. I found this has helped my efforts. Perhaps something similar will help you? Help needed

You congradulated me on the work I was doing with U.S. regions. I need your help. The user who created, American West, which should have never been completed in the first place as it was a redirect, is refusing to have the article merged. CPret is trying to make this into a me verse him arguement, rather than me trying to implement a policy adopted by consesnsus. He'a trying to enforce a specific point of view, while I and the wikiproject want various views. He's taking things out of context and ignoring facts, even when links are provided. Gargantuan task!

Oh no, more work! :) Well, for now, I will add it to just 1953 and 1994. I will be taking care of the years in between when I get to them. I did not get a chance to keep up with all the changes while I was gone and later when I returned, so there is quite a backlog to work through. Why did you remove that portion of Anne Heche's article where I mentioned her AW run being rebroadcast? That wasn't an "ad" for Soapnet - it's not like they are going to get much publicity from the Anne Heche page. I thought people who were reading her profile might want to know that she can currently be seen on Soapnet. I don't know how that is an ad. If you want me to reword it, I can, but I think it's important to let her fans know that what many consider her best work is rerunning on TV right now. I'd like to discuss this. Re: Literature in the Seventies

I've honestly never heard of the Rossner book, but I squeezed it in because it seems compelling and influential - I may have to read it some time myself (is it "good"?). Literature is such a broad topic that I tried to use broad strokes to cover everything, and I obviously missed a lot of important works. Feel free to add (or subtract) as you see fit, because the section is far from comprehensive.

Some people are lobbying for changing the article's name to Macedonian without any qualifier. As it seems, a number of these people come from the Macedonian/Macedonian Slav wikipedia project. The Waltons

I never saw the later seasons so I didn't know how long it ran, but this paragraph specifically confused me:

World War II deeply influenced the family. Mary-Ellen's husband Curtis Willard, a physician, is called up. He is sent to Pearl Harbor where he dies during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. The last scene in the show is the younger Walton boys walking out of their home in order to enlist in the service.

I took "last scene in the show" to mean the last scene in the series, and not that specific episode. Can you reword it to avoid further confusion? Mike H 15:39, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

• never said i wouldn't, i'm at work, so i can't do anything extensive about it. but just because the info has not been modified, does not mean that it doesn't belong there. if you delete it, how will others know that it existed to contribute to it. if its there, and others see that its underdeveloped, then they can work on it, but if its not there, no one can add to it. --ZeWrestler 15:45, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
