Wong Kim Ark GA review[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the feedback on United States v. Wong Kim Ark. I'll work on these things and get back to you soon so you can have another look. It shouldn't be terribly hard to improve the article along the lines you described. Richwales (talk · contribs) 00:53, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've rephrased the opening sentence in the lede to mention jus soli. I almost slipped up and equated jus soli with "birthright" citizenship, but this would have been a mistake because the concept of birthright citizenship also encompasses jus sanguinis. I also added a sentence in "Background" indicating that Wong initially prevailed in federal district court; I have the cite to that ruling because it's mentioned in the Supreme Court case, but I can't find district court cases of this vintage online. I might have a chance to stop by the Stanford Law School library this week (I work at Stanford) and look for it there, and if so, I should be able to add the year, the exact names of the litigants, and possibly also a quote or two. The work you suggested for "Subsequent developments" is going to be a bit more involved, but I can hopefully get a start on it tonight or tomorrow. Richwales (talk · contribs) 01:44, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found an online copy of the district court judgment (In re Wong Kim Ark) and have incorporated it into a reference in the article. So, no need to take a trip to the law library after all. :-) I'm going to continue to look for more secondary sources to put in the article. Richwales (talk · contribs) 05:01, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added three more references based on a new (to me) secondary source — an 1898 article in the American Law Review. I think I'll take a break at this point and wait for a new round of feedback from you. Richwales (talk · contribs) 05:39, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ok, thanks. I'm putting the references I think should stay into a new arts and culture section, then I'll try to source them and find some new info. Johnny Neutrino (talk) 02:20, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike, Greeting from Alberta. Hey...I was just looking at your reference for the paragraph starting: "The Sweet Grass Hills are an example of the island ranges". There is no mention of the Sweetgrass Hills in the reference, and the Sweetgrass Hills aren't on the map of the refered-to page. I.e, the hills aren't located in the Central Ranges Region that is being discussed in the reference. And there's nothing that alludes to the fact that the hills "are biological hotspots, containing more species than the prairie below". So, we really can't use this as a reference. If there is going to be extrapolation to the Sweetgrass Hills, this must be made clear in any reference provided. Do you have another reference that backs this up? Cheers.  BC  talk to me 19:39, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good points. Actually I didn't write the text, but I know who did and we'll get some sourcing for it. My gut says it wasn't made up. --Mike Cline (talk) 19:50, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. I restored the island ranges bit and they aren't "buttes" (Buttes are flat topped, and usually sit out by themselves. These really are "hills"). In each case, we probably need to cite to definitions, not a lot of sources that explain the obvious. As for the rest, I won't speak to the biological hotspot issue, if it can't be sourced, then I guess it's out. I restored the trivia because it's fun, but if it's cut again, I won't whine about it.  ;-) Montanabw(talk) 23:01, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright concern[edit]

Hi, Mike. There's a problem with Montana Stream Access Law that we need to resolve. We've received an OTRS complaint (Ticket:2011022610009463) about the article, indicating that it takes commentary from [1]. Archives substantiate that it was published there in 2002, so it well predates us. Certainly, there are substantial similarities between that site and the content in the article. For instance, at creation, the article said:

In other words, anyone can fish and float with non-motorized craft with only a handful of specific restrictions that are listed in the most recent fishing regulations. Motorized watercraft have further restrictions on their use and are there to prevent conflicts between motorized boats and floaters/wade anglers/float anglers.

The external site said:

In other words, you can fish and float with non-motorized craft with only a handful of specific restrictions that are listed in the most recent fishing regulations. Motorized watercraft have further restrictions on their use (these restrictions are there to prevent conflicts between motorized boats and floaters/wade anglers/float anglers.

The only differences here are the changing of "you can" to "anyone" and the removal of "(these restrictions".

There are other examples of direct content duplication and close paraphrasing. The content has been blanked pending resolution of the question. While the legal code is public domain, of course, the commentary is not. Are you able to verify license for this material? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:36, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MRG - I suspect as this was one of my early WP efforts, that my paraphrasing was not up to standard. I concur with deleting the offending material. As there is ample coverage of this topic in many sources, I'll reconstruct as needed. Thanks for your diligence. If there is any thing specific I must do, let me know. --Mike Cline (talk) 23:01, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will delete the content unless the copyright holder can be persuaded to license it; there is some suggestion that he may be open to this. It would be a good idea, I would think, for you to take a look at some of the other contribs you made early in your WP career in case some of them have issues that need to be addressed. As this one demonstrates in smaller degree, copyrighted content can be remarkably stable; while sometimes passages are overwritten in the ordinary editing process, I've seen passages copied into Wikipedia as far back as 2004 that have remained without substantial alteration. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:26, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Skues's" is the correct spelling in British English, provided that an extra s sound is pronounced, and I should certainly do that in this case: please see Apostrophe#Singular nouns ending with an “s” or “z” sound. Moonraker2 (talk) 05:11, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, I've come here to make that very point but I see that Moonraker2 has beaten me to it. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 13:12, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not one to step on British English, but interestingly enough these two examples, both from British authors, both from British published books on Fly fishing dispute Skues's as the proper english:
  • "...which questioned Skues' somewhat partisan quoting of Halford" - The Fly, Andrew Herd, Medlar Press, page 353
  • "In the years after Halford's death Skues' work made slow progress." F.M. Halford and the Dry Fly Revolution, Tony Hayter, Robert Hale London, page 234.

--Mike Cline (talk) 13:43, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Indeed. It's a murky area, but I believe the consensus is as Moonraker2 says. To cite another example, British English usually uses single inverted commas (and double inverted commas within them) for reported speech etc, but the Guardian newspaper uses singles within doubles (it also refuses to italicise book titles, amongst its many peculiarities of style and punctuation). One change that I've made to the Skues page that might interest you: Winchester is a school and pupils ('men', as they're ambitiously called) don't graduate from it. Ericoides (talk) 14:53, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice[edit]

Hi Mike, thanks for the note. I've had a brief look; three main things I've changed (and these crop up quite a bit in your articles). 1. Whenever dry fly (or similar) is used as an adjectival phrase before a noun, eg dry-fly fishing or dry-fly tactics, it needs a hyphen (otherwise one might assume that the fly fishing is dry, rather than the fly). See the title page of Halford's book that you uploaded (Halford-Title Page Dry Fly Fishing 1902.JPG). Of course when used as a noun in its own right, as in "the tactics of dry fly", no hyphen is needed. 2. G.E.M. Skues and similar names with initials should always be G. E. M. Skues etc, eg with spaces after the initials. 3. Where appropriate, en-rules should be used rather than hyphens. Some fascinating articles you've created here; makes me nostalgic for the Itchen, in which I spent a fair part of my childhood surreptitiously swimming... I'll have to pop along there one day to see how it fares these days. Regards, Ericoides (talk) 00:27, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hello and thank you very much : ).

You have said, "I am not sure that any lengthy content about religion (any religion) would be appropriate for an article like Yellowstone.".

Why not?! I think there isn't any rule in WP against such a thing. It is very informative section for any reader. It is important for any reader about Yellowstone to know what religions or cultures say about it. I supported that section by 1 reliable source at least, for anyone wants to know what Islam says about Yellowstone by supporting it with Qur'an. And Qur'an is a reliable source in WP about the view of Islam on any subject, ether it is geographical subject or something else. So, I hope you will help WP by bringing that section back and protecting it against any vandalism if you can do so. Or you may talk to someone who can. I am waiting for your help for WP. Have a nice day. : ) Lkmen (talk) 15:28, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Appy Mags[edit]

Hey Mike, do you know if those Appaloosa Journals at MSU have an index? I'm guessing not, but sometimes every few years a magazine would do that sort of thing, back in the pre-internet days. It's not a huge deal, but there is one photo from a book and I'm sort of wondering if it might have been reprinted in the magazine, there was a museum exhibit that might have had a story run on it... Firehole Village[edit]

Have you run across any sources naming the proposed location for Firehole Village? I've seen it placed near the Lower Basin, Midway Basin and Mallard Lake, which covers a lot of territory. There appears to have been a site selected, and I assume it was within a mile of the Grand Loop Road, but I find no unambiguous description. Acroterion (talk) 12:43, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am on the road, so I don't have access to the books, but you might check:
  • Bartlett, Richard (1985). Yellowstone: A Wilderness Besieged. Tucson, AZ: University of Arizona Press. ISBN 0816510989.
  • Chase, Alton (1986). Playing God in Yellowstone-The Destruction of America's First National Park. Boston, MA: The Atlantic Monthly Press. ISBN 0871130254.
Both these books talked alot about Mission 66. Additionally, if we can locate the official Mission 66 plans, its probably in there. --Mike Cline (talk) 13:47, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll see if I can find them at a library without having to resort to Amazon. On another subject, I've done a short article on Grassy Lake Dam. Since it's only 100 yards from the park and is the outcome of proposals to build dams in the park, it might have a place in List of Yellowstone National Park related articles, but there's no obvious category for it, and I'm leery of expanding the scope too much. Along the lines of the Grassy Lake article, I'm meditating an article on the whole series of water-use proposals in the park (or maybe a summary article tying together Yellowstone/Jackson Lake/Hetch Hetchy/Echo Park/Grand Canyon/Glen Canyon), but that may prove too ambitious), but that may not happen for a while. moving students work for them[edit]

Hi Mike!

I notice that you've been moving student work from sandboxes into live articles for them. Note that such contributions don't show up in the leaderboard and related statistics, which we're using to try to understand how much student are contributing to Wikipedia. (It's also a slight issue with attribution, since the author of that content doesn't show up in the article's history.) Would it be too much trouble to have the students do that in the future? Thanks, and as always, keep up the good work!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 15:54, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sage, agree fully. Tough however when students are up against finals and begging for help. The topic will definitely come up with Professor Ruppel when we have our debrief this month. Eastern Montana[edit]

On the former page for Eastern Montana, it says that the article was deleted, and merged into the Montana article, per discussion. Yet, I cannot find any discussion on the Eastern Montana deletion log, and I cannot find anything on the division of Montana into eastern and western regions on the Montana page.--161.7.78.203 (talk) 18:44, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern Montana had no useful content to merge. All the so-called regions including Western Montana were unsourced and could not be sourced because as entities, they don't exist. Any division of the state into regions as was done, would be purely arbitrary, thus they were deleted without objection. Western Montana has been retained for the time until its content is merged. Unfortunately, most of the content is about Missoula, not a region. Overall, the idea of a regional breakup of Montana is now covered in Regional designations of Montana. Hope this explains what has been undertaken. --Mike Cline (talk) 19:08, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with Mike's assessment. There is, I think, discussion across multiple talk pages. The basic problem is that there is no official definition of where "eastern" Montana begins, particularly when many of us who live east of the divide still consider ourselves part of "western" Montana and people who live in waaayyy eastern Montana sometimes even dispute Billings as really being in "eastern Montana," while at least one political candidate may have lost an election after calling Havre "eastern" Montana. Absent a formal definition, we are kind of helpless. Montanabw(talk) 19:23, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
