Naruto Names Origins and Meanings

Hey André, remember me from NarutoForums? Anyways, I was about to add your Naruto Names: Origins and Meanings page (http://home.wanadoo.nl/debbie.kiki/) to the list of links at the bottom, and then I saw your Wikipedia name on the site. I recognized it because I've seen you edit the Naruto page a few times. I was wondering if there was a reason it wasn't already listed. I think it's a great resource, and although the layout could use some work, I think a lot of other people would agree that it's a good site to list on the Naruto wikipedia page. Rosenrot

Hi Broodwich, I was wondering if you had a source for Rammstein's announcement that Rosenrot will not be released in the U.S.? So far, I have only read that no release dates for the U.S. or Japan have been set. Remember, you're only supposed to add material to Wikipedia that you can cite from an external source. Well, I don't consider that image to be a reputable source, since it is very easy for anyone to make and there is no author listed. For now, I think we should wait and stick to what we know is fact: There has not been an announced U.S. release date, and the U.S. release has not been officially confirmed or denied. --mdd4696 03:46, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

afd helper

This makes voting much faster. The only thing I don't like is that sometimes the AFD page hangs as the Vote links are inserted. Also, it can be touchy if you click in one of the textboxes before it saves the page. I will probably make a copy of it to tweak for myself, but it's a good starting point. These are probably both very browser dependent things. Opera doesn't hang and seems to perform the vote-link-adding operation pretty quickly, but I would like it if there were a faster way to do it. I've also been doing a lot of tweaking and adding of features myself, so if you want to try patch some bugs, go ahead, but I'd rather if you did tweaking & patching in public. jnothman talk 02:25, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

A phrase's Google hit count is not criteria for notability alone. If you look at the results, most of them are links to stores that sell the product, or are entirely unrelated. This product was not the first of its kind, and I don't think there is anything special about it compared to other brands. In my opinion, this makes it unfit for a stub, much less an article. Unless someone can provide us with some sort of information that goes beyond a description of the item, like cultural significance or historical perspective, this article is useless; and I don't believe anyone can do that. The google hits are enough to show that a lot of people know what they are and talk about them, which means that they are something people would hope to be able to find in wikipedia. Kappa 00:28, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
Chore Boy article aside, I am getting the impression that you think using the number of Google hits alone is a valid way to justify an article's notability. It is not, and I hope that I am just mistaken. What I was saying was that just because a phrase turns up a certain number of hits on Google, it doesn't mean that all of those hits are relevant to your search. I looked through the Google results for "chore boy" and I did not see any pages other than those selling the item and pages that used the words "chore boy" in a context unrelated to the product mentioned in the article on Wikipedia. Therefore, the number of Google hits does not support your claim that it shows enough people know about the product to expect it on Wikipedia. --mdd4696 02:09, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

American Measurements

Hi R'son-W, if you'd like to read more on how templates work, you can look at Wikipedia:Template_namespace. Also, I noticed that you reverted the size of the "lb.ft." text back to size 14pt. I had changed it to 10pt because at 14pt, it stretches it's containing div. A number of other templates use a 10pt font to prevent this, such as Template:User_java. I would like to change your template to be consistent with the other ones, what do you think? --mdd4696 00:09, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

I hadn't noticed any stretching, and it looked consistent with the other templates on my user page, and the user pages of others, so I brought it back to 14 pt. But if the "lb.ft." stretches out its div when you see it, you should definitely resize the font. Another solution would be to choose something other than "lb.ft." to represent american measurements, like "mile" or something. R'son-W 01:25, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
I changed it to ft-lb because that is the abbreviation for foot-pound, an obscure but entirely valid unit, and that makes it just small enough to stay at 14pt without stretching the div. I wanted to keep lb in there somehow, since it is such a weird abbreviation. (And about the way it looks on my screen: sometimes I have to remind myself that my screen doesn't always look like other's, because I have mine set at 125dpi instead of the normal 96dpi, which can sometimes do really screwy things!) Tram image

Hi KF, I couldn't tell if you were a little bit offended by my criticisms of the image; I just wanted to let you know that I really do like the picture quite a bit and that those issues (cropping, centering) were rather minor. Anyways, if you get a chance at some point, I think a lot of people would appreciate a higher resolution version, even if it doesn't become a Featured Picture. Hi, and thanks for your message. Of course I'm not offended. (It would take a lot more than that.) All I was trying to say is that, generally speaking, it seems a bit unfair to apply "featured image" criteria to pictures which were never intended to be more than ordinary (though of acceptable quality) illustrations of an article. Can I say that while it is perfectly understandable for you to feel a bit defensive towards the comments on the featured picture page, I feel like they were criticisms of its suitability for being featured more than a criticism of the photo itself, and I don't think you need ask for everyone to stop commenting because you didn't submit it for that purpose. Image Placement

Hi Fir, let me be the first to make a complaint about your exceedingly awesome contributions (you make me want to become a photographer). I do not like the way you format the photos you add to articles. Having all of them stacked in a column is not appropriate on Wikipedia for two reasons: they are hard to connect with sections of the article, and they are distracting. Per WP:Images,

"Articles that use more than one image should present a variety of material near relevant text. Three uniformed portraits would be redundant for a biography of a famous general. A map of a battle and an picture of its aftermath would provide more information to readers. Images should be large enough to reveal relevant detail without overwhelming the surrounding article text."

Of course, this is only a guideline, but please take it into account when you add images to a page. For example, I just reorganized Gamelan. I feel that the new format better represents the community's preference. What do you think? ~MDD4696 (talk • contribs) 02:11, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi MDD4696, Thanks for your compliments, and I'll taken on board the suggestions you tempered them with. I just find it hard to read the disjointed text when the pictures are left and right. Anyway I'll scrap my pet "{|align=right" format. I think the Gamelan article is better, but maybe you know how to better word the captions? I just took the snaps at the Indonesian Embassy. I completely understand what you mean by "disjointed text." In some instances, having the images alternate right and left definately looks crummy... image placement can be a delicate process. I will also try to think of some good captions for those pictures. And about the solar array, I actually got the idea from a science hobbyist website, and only after I did some more research did I find out about the MythBusters episode. In any case, it's just about done... it just needs to be programmed, but considering that it's winter in North America, it might be a while before it's completed. ~MDD4696 (talk • contribs) 21:47, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps I should rephrase my comment -- although some users may disapprove of a gallery of young girls by a user with the name "Nymph", he is not insinuating or endorsing illegal activity. Hi KF. Sorry to leave multiple comments, but your note on my talk page just really bothers me. I don't want to be viewed as a pedophile, and I don't want you or anyone else thinking I'm a sicko. I knew that I was stepping into delicate territory when I left that comment on Nymph's talk page, but I stand by my claim that he has the right to display that gallery. I was not using his talk page to communicate strictly with him, but to present my viewpoint in contrast to yours and Lupo's. Perhaps that is a misuse of his discussion page, and if it is, I apologize (although I don't believe it was, I will research it furthur to be sure). Perhaps there is a better spot to discuss the content of his user page? In any case, please respond and let me know what you think. Hi again, and thanks for your three messages. It seems to me that you see this matter far too legistically, and that alone is what made me slightly mad. To continue viewing things from that angle, everyone in their right mind will agree that you, just as any other contributor, have all the right in the world to add what you added to someone's talk page. Of course there is no "misuse" whatsoever. Similarly, everyone will agree that a collection of harmless images does not violate any laws, rules, regulations or whatever.
This is exactly what requests are all about: You ask someone to do something for you, while at the same time you know you are not entitled to that help or service. Just as on a crowded train: You ask someone to give up their seat for you. If they refuse, there is nothing you can do about it, whether their refusal seems justified or not. Or imagine a phone-in radio show: You call the station and request a particular song to be played, but if they choose not to there is no way you could sue them. IANAL, but it seems obvious that a request is not a contract where two parties agree to do something for their mutual benefit.
This is where you as the third party come in. Imagine yourself as another person on that crowded train standing next to the one asking someone if they may sit down. Before either can react, you tell them that the one who is sitting has no legal obligation to give up their seat and, by doing so, encourage them to remain seated. I don't imagine you do that sort of thing when you are using public means of transport.
Again, this is not a question of having a right; it's a question of exercising it or deliberately refraining from doing so. It is a moral rather than a legal question. It is to do with conventions in our society, not laws.
And by the way, I have yet to come across any paedophiles here at Wikipedia.

Majesty (band)/Temp

Hi Enochlau. You recently deleted a page I created, Majesty_(band)/Temp. It was created as part of the copyvio process (see Majesty_(band)). Was your deletion a mistake or was there a reason it was deleted? As I understand it, the temporary page for a copyvio is supposed to remain in place so that people can construct a new article... It was tagged as "incorrect hdg format" by User:Light current. I jumped to the conclusion that it was just another Temp page that had been finished with and unneeded. Obviously, that is not the case, and I've undeleted it. Enochlau 05:38, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Incorrect tag

Hi Light Current, I just wanted to leave a quick note -- you incorrectly tagged an article of mine (Majesty (band)/Temp) with a speedy delete, reason: "incorrect hdg format." The page I created was for the copyvio process -- see Majesty (band). When there's a copyvio, /Temp is used to build up a new version without the copyvio. However, once the new page has been written and the content moved from /Temp to the main article, /Temp should be then be deleted. Enochlau 06:06, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

The reason the article was deleted was because of its length, namely a single sentence stating something that a user might already know if they were researching the subject. That's a speedy delete for lack of content. A good stub should have a minimum of three informative sentences. Regarding Image:1985track.jpg

I believe that the image you uploaded is public domain, as you claimed, but I could not find any original sources which describe its license. However, I did find the NOAA National Hurricane Center's data on Hurricane Gloria, which had a Hurricane Tracking map. Since we can verify that the image I just found is definately public domain, and it is higher resolution (albeit it is not a complete image like you had) I was wondering what you thought of replacing the current image with the one I found. The image which I uploaded says that it's by the US Department of Commerce, which would make it public domain. But since you say the image you uploaded is *definitely* public domain I have no problem using tht one instead. That image seems to have better detail anyway. anthony 12:26, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I've added a comment. He created about 20 pages last week which I went through one by one to check they really were all copyvios (and pretty unencyclopedic too) and flagged them for speedy deletion, which took ages.
