Bear River Massacre

I am indeed interested in learning more about this event and things connected to it. I might be able to get a copy of the Utah Historical Quarterly from my local library (I live in Logan, Utah), or get it from Utah State University, so you don't need to go through any special effort to get a copy to me.

Thanks for the reference, however, and it looks like something perhaps I should try and dig up to add some additional references in this article. I've been meaning to give it a second look, and to clean up some of the unreferenced sections that I left dangling as uncited "facts". Arthur Foss (tugboat)

You mentioned adding references for the Arthur Foss (tugboat) article, which I had tagged as needing reference improvements. The tag is to indicate serious problems. If you have improved the references and judge it does not need deserve the tag (even though it could still be improved, as an article can always be improved), then yes you should remove the tag. Anyone can add such a tag and anyone can remove such a tag. In this article, setting aside any plagiarism issue, the article seems to me now to be well-referenced and you would certainly remove the tag at this point.

About the plagiarism issue, though, I agree there is a problem. Three sentences in the first paragraph for example seem to be copied pretty much word-for-word from the 5th reference to the article. That reference is not a public domain source, so this is also copyright violation, I suppose. Some say anything as long as a three-word sequence copied is plagiarism; i would allow a bit more than 3 words in a row but here the word sequences are longer and clearly suggest copying, not independent coincidental ly similar wording. Can you reword the overlapping material? And/or put any specific assertions into quotes, crediting that site? I find it disappointing, always, to find plagiarism, but you've done well to catch it. USCGC Fir formatting etc

Thanks for cleaning up. Yes, the NBSP; character is apparently to be used in measurements, to keep the number and the unit of measurement together. I only learned about that from the automated review of the List of NHLs in New York, and subsequent discussion, within the peer review (which is still open at Wikipedia:Peer review/List of National Historic Landmarks in New York/archive1). Daytona Beach NRHPs

Thank you for getting the pics of the Bartholomew J. Donnelly House and Tourist Church. I was going to try last weekend, but with Bike Week, thought it best to postpone. If you could get more shots of NRHPs there, it would be great. The list I'm using to keep track of what's need is here. And thanks for adding my photo to the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light article. Florida on-line historic site documents

Hi -- In response to your question to me. http://www.flheritage.com/preservation/sitefile/faq.cfm indicates it might be possible to get on-line access to Florida documents, but it appears you would have to differentiate yourself from "the general public". Being an amateur but experienced writer of wikipedia articles could possibly suffice, I wonder.

"Q. Is Site File information available online? A. We do not offer self-service internet searches to the general public partly due to security concerns and due to archaeological site location and building plan Sunshine Law exemptions. Cultural Resource Management professionals may be able to gain time-limited, electronic access to files through a secure, password protected application but will need to contact Site File personnel for more information."

Willard Memorial Chapel

I do think a list of RHPs would be too unwieldy too soon. About Willard Memorial Chapel: originally a seminary, later 7th day adventist, now community center/wedding venue. I don't know what religion a seminary is. Maybe if the list of NHLs that are churches is put into a table, there needs to be more than one column for religion, like:

• Name
• State
• Religion 1: religion of primary association with the site
• Religion 2: religion of secondary association

nrhp multiple author reference

There's a bug with the referencing system, so using first= and last= and otherauthor= (or some such field like otherauthor) does not work properly. So don't use any of those fields when there are multiple authors, use something like "author=Joseph S. Smith, Betty Boop, and Harold Vanderkamp" instead. Alternatively, you could put first author's name into Last, First format, as in "author=Smith, Joseph S., Betty Boop, and Harold Vanderkamp". This distinction is not very important, but that might appear better in a reference list with other single authored references that do appear in Last, First name order. This is how most academic journal reference lists would be prepared, as far as i know. Further, practice is to leave the 2nd and other authors in First Last name order, probably because adding commas just convolutes it all and could make it difficult to read which set of names append together to make one author name. Virginia NHLs

Hi -- I've started working on List of National Historic Landmarks in Virginia. I'd be very pleased if you were interested in contributing some edits there or in the NHL articles it indexes. I've invited Clariosophic and Kudzuvine also to work on that list, and invited Bedford to work on one specific article that I think he might be interested in.

Hopefully Kudzuvine will be interested and will work on the HABS pics available for many Virginia NHLs (again as there were lots for South Carolina, while there are relatively fewer HABS pics for historically industrial states like Ohio and New York.) But I don't know if he's interested in going outside of South Carolina much.

I do find it a lot more fun to work on a list where there are other nice people contributing too. Anyhow, you're invited!

I do observe the NRHP document is there for Aquia Church, the next one on the list. It would be great if you wanted to, but maybe there are other things you'd prefer to do than develop write-ups from those documents. Hi, well, i liked having the map show in the Pittsylvania County Courthouse article. Perhaps because it shows where Pittsylvania County is located and that is part of the name of the place, and part of why the place is out of the way, a possibly "hick" place where discrimination could flourish, to speculate a bit. I tend to wipe out the maps when the location gets redundant, like if there are 30 NHLs in New Orleans and everyone knows where there that is already. You could choose to edit differently. Thanks, got ur note that Carter Hall (Millwood, Virginia) was lead dyk with pic, then went to see it. YAY! i took a pdf pic of it just now too. It was a Daniel from australia, not Daniel Case, who posted the DYK notice to my page, by the way. Cataldo Mission wipeout

I am sorry that the merge was done without your say. I didn't use a merge tag, and that was caused the problem. Catskill articles

Not at all! I live down in Orange County, so I don't get up to Greene County too much. I do hike up in the Catskills there, and, as Rowena Memorial School and Thomas Cole Mountain demonstrate, I try to take relevant pictures there when I do. But at current gas prices it would be a while till I could jutify going up to Catskill to shoot those pictures. I still have a backlog of images but none include anything in Greene County, currently. I'm glad you started those articles ... I will probably use the stuff from the RHP noms to flesh them out (thank God NYSOPRHP puts all that online). I was going to leave you a note to that effect.

Marcellus photo needed

I commented in Wikipedia:Peer review/Marcellus Formation/archive1 about the possibility of a Central New Yorker taking a pic, if the specific location of the eponymous rock outcropping can be identified. I wonder if you could find the original or another location within Marcellus. Not sure if it would be that much appreciated by the Marcellus Formation article author, though. The pic in the article does look like rock you see around Syracuse though. Perhaps article should be added to WP:SYR, too, aren't you a member of that? Ooh, Slate Hill Road in Marcellus is the place, I bet. Gray or black has to do just with how wet it is i bet. All of the shale in the area must be from that formation. If you could take a pic there and post that, I am sure it is the right one. Also, you could call the Earth Sciences dept at University of Syracuse http://earthsciences.syr.edu/, Department of Earth Sciences / 204 Heroy Geology Lab / Syracuse, NY 13244 /Ph: 315-443-2672, to get confirmation. It's not that unusual for a department to get a call like this, you would call and ask the department staff if they could refer you to a faculty member who might be willing to give a few minutes to give an opinion. It's for a wikipedia article on the Marcellus Formation, and it's a good cause. Then email the pic to that person and phone him/her. If you find this geology interesting, which i do. If you took the pic and posted it but didn't want to contact the SU geology department contact, I guess i would do that if I knew exactly where the photo was from.

There is not a huge rush on this, just whenever you can get a pic at that road and if possible also at Skaneateles.

Thanks for your followup. I think you are right that periods should not be included at end of sentence fragments in descriptions. Also, Ruhrfisch had previously offered to help with getting the article copy-edited, so I am asking for that help. He's not available for a few days, and then the copy-editor will need some time, so i am delaying nominating it for FL for a little while, anyhow. To find the archived peer review, just go to the notice of the peer review having occured, at the top of the Talk page. "List of National Historic Landmarks in New York has had a peer review by Wikipedia editors which is now archived. It may contain ideas you can use to improve this article." i notice u are making a big dent in the descriptions needed for List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles. Thanks! Sorry i did not reply about Fire Station No. 23, i figured Cbl62 had changed something but i was not familiar with it till i saw the DYK earlier today on Engine Co. 27. Note, i added Fire Station No. 23 alternate name info into it, as that is the LAHCM name for it.

Franklin County Courthouse (Pennsylvania)

Thanks for saving my DYK on this. I think the date of the McCausland (sp?) raid is relevant and important to add to the article. The photo caption suggests it was in 1864, while i thot it happened as part of the prelude to the nearby Battle of Gettysburg. However i know Gettysburg took place July 1-3, 1863. Perhaps an alternative DYK ought to focus on this being the only Northern city burnt during the Civil War. I am so glad u have taken over, whew....  :) doncram (talk) 04:28, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

I was hoping that they would see u should get direct credit too, but I see there that it is me alone who is scheduled to get direct credit. I'll pass it along though. Chicago RHPs

Got ur note. Yes, i dropped the description column in the Chicago section of List of Registered Historic Places in Cook County, Illinois/Temp to prepare for DYK. Dropping the descriptions column is temporarily so table can look good for DYK, then to be added later. Note I put notes from some descriptions already there in new Talk page section of Talk: List of Registered Historic Places in Cook County, Illinois. Also i renumbered the list. Sorry if i caused any edit conflict for you. I am done for now. KudzuVine is responding, as he did for Los Angeles list-related request, to add HABS pics, seems to be at it right now, i had an edit conflict.

Actually, since it is so hard to find any mention of AVR 661 on the web, I suspect it no longer exists or at least is no longer in Chicago. So the hook is probably correct, but i just can't document that AVR 661 is no longer there. Pic permission

Just ask them to send you an email stating that they, as the author, irrevocably release all rights, or all rights save attribution (depending on whether they want to be credited whenever the image is republished), to the image. Use the {{PD-author}} or {{attribution}} tags depending on whichever option they prefer. At Commons, you'll probably be asked to forward the email to the permissions archive ... fourth of July, or bust

Yes, it seems the NPS's Pdf Focus website seems to be misfunctioning. It has been for a few days, which is very unfortunate. It tricked me into stating, in some new articles, that NRHP reference documents are not available, when they probably usually are available.

And, about the archeological site in Alaska that you were trying to get NRHP doc for, it probably is NOT available on-line at all. Especially for archeological sites, the Pdf Focus site does not have them. And, I think for Alaska i might have added the NRHP docs for every one where they were available, though there is little way for you to tell. More recently, when i try to add NRHP documents and find they are not available, i put in the footnote saying so. gotta run. doncram (talk) 21:06, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

uploading pics

Thanks for the Wilcox pic, it is great and timely!

I replied to your question about uploading friend's pics at my talk page, to keep the conversation together.

But, please do take one step and edit the photo file so that it is lower resolution (fine for webpages). I find it extremely easy to do this now and am doing so routinely. When i click on a .jpg that has been saved to my computer, it opens in Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I select Picture / Rotate, and rotate 1 degree or so if necessary. I select Picture / Crop and crop as necessary. Then when it looks good, I save it under a name like Image:WilcoxOctagonHouse 2008-06-19 cropped Lg030.jpg , where Lg indicates to me it is the full, large-file version of the picture. Then, I select Picture / Compress pictures, and choose the 3rd compress for option: Web pages. And i save it again, under almost the same name but using Sm rather than Lg, to indicate it is the Small-size file. I am choosing Lg and Sm as sort of code, so as not to say "low-resolution" and then receive any grief back from anyone for doing that. I noticed. It's amazing we're that close. I hadn't change the State Parks b/c they're State Parks, so technically are under protected areas. But I could always add the NRHP infobox beneath. I should be able to do some fixing of the other stuff. If there's more than what you mentioned, lemme know and I'll see what I can do. Though I'll have to fit it in and around my photo roadtrips. I got all the ones you mentioned. I had to gut one section of Villa Vizcaya, as it was a copyvio from what looked like a blog, of all things. I wonder, is NM done? Its stubs were created, not sure if there are any other problems. Also i think SC and WA are probably cleanly done, and that VA is nearly as clean. I suggested, over at wt:NRHP, that we just try to do the complete checkoff on as many states as possible, perhaps we can do 40 states at the current, expanded scope level. I am too concerned otherwise, that there is not enough time to address issues raised already, or that will be raised just before the deadline, in your review process. Thanks for reviewing 4 (or now 5?) state NHL lists in one day! I noticed it has been adding up, in terms of a lot of states having complete reviews now, but have not focused on how much added any one day. I just see them one at a time, the list is so long to look at now... And, not meaning to be a slaved-driver, just trying to point u to the easy ones to do next, when convenient. Yay! the DYK finally went through, and the DYK hook, with no picture though, is on the Wikipedia main page right now. The DYK administrator saw fit to directly award the DYK plaque to you, not to Clariosophic or me. Thief! :)

The hook that appears now is, Did You Know: *... that zooming in from satellite view, one can see the outlines of Wilcox Octagon House and most of the 82 octagon houses listed on the U.S. National Register?

FYI there are combined infoboxes for some ships now, with one infobox combining a Ship infobox and an NRHP infobox. But i don't know about any combined station - NRHP infoboxes yet. For ship-NRHP articles, it seems sometimes better to have one combined infobox, and sometimes in longer articles to keep them separate. Thank you for your great support in this cleanup drive. Well, it may have been support at first, but your leadership in working out a review style and your persistence in applying it, across 54 area-lists and 2,442 separate NHLs, was truly awesome! date and name checking / NPS errors

You noted "I was checking the List of National Historic Landmarks in Nevada list against the The Nevada NHL list. The NHL list shows Leonard Rockshelter 2X, but not the Francis G. Well, it looks like there is an error in the NHL list. By the way, I am referring to the full nation-wide PDF list, in which Nevada is page 60 of 118, of which the NV list you refer to is one page. For our use in citing, we want to use the full one, because it has a version date and title up front and other info to use in a specific citation, by the way, as Ipoellet pointed out to me once in the List of NHLs in CA talk page. I don't know if there are any discrepancies between the separate state PDFs vs. the full 118 page one; i only use the full one now.

Anyhow it also omits the Newlands house and includes the Rockshelter twice. The NHL summary webpages show the Newlands house one though, which is our source on this then i guess. I guess the List of NHLs in NV page would be more accurate if it noted that. Also, i should put it into my NHLinfo list of NPS errors on NHLs, mostly discrepancies between NHL webpages and other sources. (Okay, added that). Thanks for noting it. Overall, though, the NHL PDF list is very good, much better than the NHL summary webpages which often have errors relative to the NHL PDF list and/or the NRHP inventory/nomination documents. No, the hook wasn't too specialized, just too long. We generally favour shorter hooks at DYK because the long ones don't work as well, and at the moment, we have a backlog which means shorter hooks are strongly preferred.

Normally if a hook is too long I can find a way to just trim it a bit, unfortunately with that particular hook there just didn't seem to be any way to trim it without it becoming meaningless :) Gatoclass (talk) 17:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I put the under construction tag on the stub to let anyone who looked know that I was working on it. You obviously checked the history, so could see that I just started it today. I realize that there is, as yet, no text, but other than that, I disagree with the article being a total mess. It has the appropriate infobox, good references and a nice photo gallery. Ooh it would be great if you could get Newtown Battlefield, the one NHL in List of Registered Historic Places in Chemung County, New York. Vermont google maps

Hey, sorry i didnt get back to you sooner about adding Google map links to Vermont lists of RHPs. I thought that table-izing the Vermont county lists would need to be done first, but at least the first one alphabetically is already table-ized. Then, all you need to do is add the "GeoGroupTemplate". And click on the "Map of all coordinates" link it provides. Sometimes the link doesn't work right away, it can take a few hours for longer lists.

I actually add the whole following passage:

This is intended to be a complete list of properties and districts listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]] in [[Addison County, Vermont]]. Thanks for requesting and reporting on the NRHP's featured listings list, in the article and in the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/National Register of Historic Places featured properties and districts. Whichever way the AfD goes, the deletion nominator has "won" if her goal was to force a bunch of people to spend time on this. I rather hate the non-constructive nature of that. Hmm, i don't mean to project what her goal was, that perhaps sounded snarky. I don't know what her goal was. Yes, it's nice that the AfD was closed with KEEP. As a matter of rhetorical style, it was interesting how the last sequence went: your new info; my interpretation and expansion; deletion nominator different interpretation; your rebuttal; closed as keep.
