Perry's flag[edit]

Your recent edit caused me to have a question; and I modified your words in one respect. You wrote "The original ..." and I've modified the text to read "An original ..." It could be that your wording is better and that, in fact, the sentence should read "The sole original ..." Can you be more specific? Is it possible to make this minor point more precise by incorporating an in-line citation which verifies the accuracy of your edit?

In this context, a related article becomes relevant -- see Hayashi Akira:

  • Kaei 7 (1854): Commodore Perry returned to Edo Bay to force Japanese agreement to the Treaty of Kanagawa; and the chief Japanese negotiator was Daigaku-no kami Hayashi Akira, who was known to the Americans as "Prince Commissioner Hayashi."<:ref>Sewall, John. "Immediately, on signing and exchanging copies of the treaty, Commodore Perry presented the first commissioner, Prince Hayashi, with an American flag stating that this gift was the highest expression of national courtesy and friendship he could offer ...."
-- from American eyewitness account of the event<:ref>Sewall, p. lxxiii; Hawks, Francis. (1856). In my view, edits like yours are what makes Wikipedia so successful -- in small details like this, history comes alive. --Tenmei (talk) 14:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sock of User:Iwanafish, per identical edits on Carpenter family articles. User:Iwanafish gave no response to a complaint about long-term edit warring, and instead began using this long-dormant account to edit Rehoboth Carpenter Family, the source of the original complaint.
