WP Education Project at SLU

Hi Klortho - I've got a nearly done draft of my course page here. I've been working with Biosthmors as my Ambassador, but any additional comments or suggestions you might have are welcome and appreciated. Many thanks, Biolprof (talk) 19:39, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I had a look and it is very nice! I don't have any suggestions for improvement (yet) but I really like a couple of the things you've done, and want to steal back from you, if you don't mind. I see you really compressed the introduction to wikipedia bits at the beginning, and I think that's a great idea. Cheers! Klortho (talk) 03:17, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

 1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
 2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
 3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

WP Infoboxes in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Infoboxes for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 22:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

course page wizard

Hey Kevin. Feel free to use course page wizard to set up course pages, if you think it's helpful. Just add that for the Description, and it creates subpages (which can be edited by anyone, not just people with course rights) for the description, timeline and grading. The default result is like Education Program:Example University/Example Course (2013 Q1). Alternatively, you can just get that top bar of links by added . The latter will become a default part of course pages after the next software update in a few weeks.

Also, please use 2013 Q1 for the term, just so that we have all the courses listed under the same term.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 13:45, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Molecular Bio OA

Sure, I'd be happy to lend a hand. :) Keilana|Parlez ici 06:31, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Me too, as much as I can. Serendipodous 12:08, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Great! How do you want to split up the work? Maybe just all three of us sign up to be OA of both classes? I see Keilana has already done that. Since I'm listed first, I might get the lion's share of the help requests, but if you guys watch my talk page, you could jump in whenever you're available to answer sth. We could split up the evaluation tasks as they come. How does that sound? I really appreciate the help. Klortho (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Works great, I'm happy to do whatever you need. Keilana|Parlez ici 20:48, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
I also like the idea of all three signing up for both classes. In order to take the brunt off of Klortho, we could change up the order in one section. Keilana, since you have added your name to section 82, why don't you add your name first to section 81. And, Serendipodous, you can add your name to sections 81 and 82 in a second and third spot, respectively. This will change it up a bit, but you can still help each other out by watching each others talk pages.
Another idea just occurred to me.... would it be easier to direct the students to the talk page of the Education Program page for each section? This way you would only need to watch the section talk page and the topics would be specific to the Mol Biol course. Just a thought, let me know what you think.Sherry Ogg (talk) 14:20, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I'm happy to shuffle my name around, and I do think centralized discussion is a good idea. That way, students can chime in on others' discussions, as is the Wikipedia way, and they can also see previous questions and answers. Keilana|Parlez ici 14:42, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Klortho, the course page doesn't want to let me move my name, could you possibly remove yourself as ambassador and re-add yourself to change the order? I think that would work... Keilana|Parlez ici 14:46, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I tried removing and adding myself again to section 81—it didn't seem to work. Here are a couple of things I can do, and I'll get to it tonight:
 • "subst" the tabular header in the description section, and make that part of the Common page;
 • parameterize the OA username;
 • Put a prominent list in that header OA1: ..., OA2: ..., OA3: ....; and finally,
 • ping Sage with a feature request that we can change the order in the summary table.
In order to direct students to use the course talk page as a "bulletin board", Keilana, do want to scan through the course page, and see if there are places where we should point students to the course talk page instead of, for example, my user-talk page? Klortho (talk) 15:14, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Hm, that's frustrating. If you can work on that, I'll take care of redirecting students to the course talk page. Go team! :) Keilana|Parlez ici 15:16, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

FYI, I'm keeping an eye on these since it's a complex use case. Since the next update to the extension will move the Summary table down beneath the main body anyway, I'm guessing the best approach will be to just manually highlight the OAs near the top of the Description section. Later on, I hope to get a designer to rethink the way that info in the Summary box gets displayed, because it's it's pretty primitive at this point.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 15:39, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure how to add my name to the section.Serendipodous 15:36, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Go to the course page, and in the Online Ambassador section of the Summary box, there should be a link to add yourself as an Online Ambassador.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 15:39, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I finished parameterizing the OA usernames. The orders are:

 • Section 81: Klortho, Serendipodous, Keilana
 • Section 82: Keilana, Klortho, Serendipodous

I've been adding a "welcome" template to each new student's talk page, as they sign up. If either of you notice new ones that don't have a welcome template, feel free to plop one down. I'm not sure, but I think the students are being listed in reverse-chronological order. Thanks so much for the help, I'm excited about this project! Klortho (talk) 04:30, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, didn't know about the email

I hardly ever check that email; it's really just a dummy email I use for forum registrations and the like, so that my name doesn't get pegged by some random guy on the internet. If you like I can email you my "real" email address. Serendipodous 12:44, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, great! Klortho (talk) 13:20, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Unit 2 Homework question from Doug

Hi Klortho, Thanks for the help on the link for the sandbox tutorial! Can you check if I did it correctly for unit two requirement(five pillar summary). I followed the tutorial instructions and have a link at the bottom of my userpage and my 'summary' comes up. However, when I press the sandbox link at the top of my userpage it comes up with nothing in it. Doug DougCovert (talk) 22:41, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Klortho, Doug here...I think I may have resolved it. I put a title, "FivePillarSummary" as link name, INSTEAD of "sandbox". Now when I press sandbox at the top of my userpage the summary comes up. Is this correct?.Please check this for me.DougCovert (talk) 23:29, 2 February 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by DougCovert (talkcontribs)

Hi Klortho, Thanks for the help on the link for the sandbox tutorial! Can you check if I did it correctly for unit two requirement(five pillar summary). I followed the tutorial instructions and have a link at the bottom of my userpage and my "/sandbox" comes up. However when I did it the first time I put a title, "FivePillarSummary" as link name, INSTEAD of "sandbox". When I did it this way , and pressed the sandbox link at the top of my userpage, my summary did not come up. Now after putting in "/sandbox" as the link and I press sandbox at the top of my userpage, the summary comes up. Is this correct?. Please check this for me. Many thanks, Doug DougCovert (talk) 23:30, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Doug,
It looks like you have three versions of the same thing: User:DougCovert/Unit2:FivePillarsSummary, User:DougCovert/Unit 2: FivePillarSummary, and User:DougCovert/sandbox all have very similar content. I'm not sure how you created the first two -- you said you changed the title, and I'm not sure where you did that. The title of a Wikipedia page is also it's "address", and uniquely identifies it. You should put this homework in the User:DougCovert/sandbox page, and probably get the other two deleted. Just put this at the top of each page you want to have deleted: db-g7

Intro from PJCollettJHU

Hi, you're right, I am the one who replied on Autumn's page and I did notice after the fact that it was being signed with an IP address instead of with my name. Oops! This is my first experience with working on wikipedia, so I completely forgot that I needed to sign in. Sorry! Hope it works this time, now that I am signed in. PJCollettJHU (talk) 23:22, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Unit 3 Introduction We've unofficially met as I'm the one who forgot to sign in while replying to Autumn's posts on my page, but we're supposed to officially indroduce ourselves as part of the Unit 3 assignment. I'm a misplaced New Yorker living in California working in the biodefense industry and on my MS Biotechnology through the John's Hopkins AAP online program. I was initilly intimidated by the thought of an online biotech masters, but so far, this is my third class, and it has been a great experience. As much as I use Wikipedia as a referance in my daily life, I've never worked with editing or creating pages, so this is a true learning experience. I'm nervous, but who knows, I may love it! PJCollettJHU (talk) 23:41, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi! No problem, don't worry about making mistakes. It takes a while to get the hang of things. Speaking of which, you should use the "New section" link to leave a message on a person's talk page, unless you are responding to an already ongoing discussion. I've gone ahead and put your comment to me, above, into it's own section. Cheers! Klortho (talk) 01:36, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I guess I hadn't figured that out properly, I opened the "new section" but never titled it! I tried it out on John's page and this time actually created a new section. Yay! Thanks for the help!PJCollettJHU (talk) 20:12, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello Klortho

I am a student in Professor Ogg's AAP Molecular Biology class at JHU. Just writing to introduce myself and to say that I am really pumped to be learning how to edit Wikipedia. If you have any pointers along the way, please let me know. Looking forward to a great semester. Ppelletier (talk) 04:43, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the greeting! I'm excited too. Don't hesitate to ask questions of me or the other two OAs. Klortho (talk) 13:24, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Do we use your handle or your real name?

Hello Chris or Klortho, what is the etiquette in terms of using names on Wikipedia? Do we use your real name (if we know it) or your handle? Thanks.MartinLubell (talk) 14:30, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure if there's an established etiquette. You can call me Chris, but Klortho is fine, too. Personally, I try to use first names if I remember them, but if I don't and I'm in a hurry, then I just use usernames. Klortho (talk) 15:27, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello

Hello Klortho or Chris whichever you prefer I am not sure. My name is Erica (Er1cah0p3) and I am new to the Wikipedia world...Hopefully this message is being sent to you correctly! I am currently enrolled in the AAP program working towards my Masters of Science in biotechnology. Molecular biology is the first science course that I have attempted to take on-line so I am absorbing a lot of information. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for all of the help you may need to be giving me throughout the semester!!162.129.251.17 (talk) 16:23, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

OOPS...No signature

Okay it's Erica again. I just realized that my signature did not take so I am going to try this again and sorry for the error162.129.251.17 (talk) 16:28, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

It is important to be sure you are signed in

I am SO sorry. I have no idea how I was logged out but apparently that has been the issue. Also regarding the sandbox for this past weeks assignment. I had set up the sandbox but not the sandbox talk page. Maybe you can clarify the difference or direct me to a tutorial to explain the difference between the User talk page and sandbox talk page. I am a bit confused.Er1cah0p3 (talk) 16:45, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Every page in Wikipedia, except talk pages themselves, have a corresponding talk page, even sandbox pages. You don't need to use them, and, in particular for sandbox pages, there's no need. The talk pages are for discussions, like this one. For a sandbox page, which only you are editing, there's not much need for discussion! Hope this clarifies a bit. Make sure you go over all the tutorial material for this week, and if it's still not clear, review earlier weeks' stuff. Klortho (talk) 17:51, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks again. I have dedicated a bit more time to this and think that I am finally getting the hang of it. I apprectiate the help.Er1cah0p3 (talk) 22:36, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Greetings!

Hi, Chris! My name is Jessica, and I wanted to briefly introduce myself to you since I believe you will be one of our guides during Dr. Ogg's Molecular Biology course. Although this Wikipedia format is new to me, I think I will get more comfortable with it all as the course continues through the term. I look forward to the new learning experience, and I'm glad we have three guides to help us along the way! Cheers! Jbmontgomery24 (talk) 18:35, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Jessica, nice to meet you! I hope you enjoy working on Wikipedia! Klortho (talk) 18:44, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
It is a pleasure to meet you as well. I look forward to working on this site with everyone. Happy Friday! Jbmontgomery24 (talk) 19:17, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Klortho from Min-Hun Kim, Molecular Biology class.

Hello,

I see some of fellow classmates already come here and greet you. I hope I am not too late for that. I read your intro. It was a pleasant surprise as I found that you are Bioinformatics major now. I am also Bioinformatics course now. Many sources have been talked about Bioinformatics. I have not seen any real person in that close distance.

I hope I get a good feedback from you throughout this wiki class project.

See you around at wiki.

Thanks.

Hi, Min-Hun, nice to meet you! Your user and sandbox pages look great. Klortho (talk) 19:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
I am trying a new different text formating in wiki page. If I want to combine the following 3 things in text formatting, how I could do that? They are 1. web-link, 2. text coloring, and 3. text size. I only successed the first 2 text formatting. How I could add a custom font size on top of this? Help:Wiki markup. I want it to be linked text in 300 percent of red-colored text. Any tips?
Hi, Min-Hun. First some feedback. For your question above, you shouldn't have indented it three levels (":::") because it is not a reply to the previous comment. You should either have started it with no indent, or else you could have started a whole new section, since this is really something unrelated to your introduction. Next, I would first point out that the kind of text formatting you're talking about is fun to know how to do, but not really appropriate for most Wikipedia articles. Articles should conform to a certain style, and ad-hoc inline formatting would make the articles look sloppy and inconsistent. But, to answer your question, for sizing, you can use the Resize template, similar to the color template you used: Help:Wiki markup. Or, if you look under the hood of those templates, you'll see that it just translates your stuff into HTML, so you could use that directly: You can do anything at Zombo com!. Klortho (talk) 12:03, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I got a picture of format rule in wiki now. I will keep that for a future usage, when the moment comes. /Mhk5600 (talk) 13:11, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Klortho!

Hi Klortho, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Byron and I am in Dr. Sherry Ogg’s Molecular Biology course, section 82. Thank your introduction and helpful words you made on my talk page. I look forward to working with you! Bcheon1 (talk) 04:14, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

JUH-Uint3 Intro

Hi Klortho,

A short note to introduce myself officially, even though we've chatted earlier. Doug C. here. This is my second term in the MS Biotech program. Thanks for your help with our discussions before. I see that someone has deleted the two sections about the "five pillars" assignment inuint 2.DougCovert (talk) 20:31, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Doug. I'm not sure what you are talking about here with the deletion -- it is something I should look into? Klortho (talk) 19:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Klortho, No reason to look into this. Please see our discussion above on Feb 4th. Best, DougDougCovert (talk) 17:07, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Klortho

Hi! I'm in my third semester of the MS in Biotechnology program at JHU. I use Wikipedia all the time and have heard that anyone can edit it but I never knew what the process was, til now. I'm actually a bit fascinated by it and I think I will really enjoy this project. Aluquette (talk) 03:15, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm glad you are excited. The vast majority of people that use Wikipedia every day never stop to edit it, so you are not alone. I hope you enjoy the introduction! Klortho (talk) 19:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello OA Chris...

Hello Chris,

My name is Lauren. I am in my second semester in Johns Hopkins AAP program in Biotechnology. I am excited to be editing a wikipedia page. I always wondered who actually did that. Thanks in advance for your help. Laurenwking (talk) 04:44, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome, in advance! Klortho (talk) 19:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi! Christine again. Can either you or Lauren explain how her comment is a shaded box rather than the typical formatting? Thanks. -MonopterusAlbus (talk) 01:45, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
It is because she inserted a space at the beginning of the line of wikitext. Wikimedia interprets anything like that to be a block of code. I explained it to her here. Klortho (talk) 00:48, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Introduction

Hi Klortho. My name is Vanessa and I'm just dropping by to introduce myself. I am part of this semester's Molecular Biology class with Dr. Ogg and so I will be working and using Wikipedia for various projects. I also want to say thanks in anticipation of the help I'm sure you will provide if necessary. So thanks!Vdiaz3 (talk) 15:42, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

You're welcome, too! I hope you enjoy the project! Klortho (talk) 19:53, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello!

Hi Chris, I'm Jessica and I'm in Dr Ogg's Molecular biology class, section 82. This is my first time taking an online class, and my first attempt in trying to edit pages in Wikipedia even though I probably use Wikipedia everyday so this is exciting. I anticipate needing help from you in the near future so thanks in advance! Jessicalau90 (talk) 04:40, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Jessica, Nice to meet you! I hope you enjoy working on Wikipedia, and don't hesitate to ask me or one of the other OAs if you have questions. Klortho (talk) 10:36, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Klortho! Nice chatting with you once again!

Good Morning! It's early Monday morning and thought I would get a couple of things knocked out since I was up. We have chatted once or twice before on my talk page. (I was the one who created my sandbox incorrectly at first! :) ) Anyways, my name is Jamie and I currently live in Evansville, IN and work for Mead Johnson Nutritional. So far I enjoy my classes with JHU. Are you a student as well? Have a great Monday! Jberendt (talk) 11:01, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Jamie, yes, I'm in the Masters in Bioinformatics program. I'm a little more than halfway through, taking just one class per semester. I'm taking Bioperl this semester. Hope you have a nice day, too! Klortho (talk) 13:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Talk Page Organization

Hi, Chris. I believe we've already met on my talk page, but this is Christine. Thanks again for your help with the indentations. I'm kind of curious about the talk page organization. A lot of the sections on your page are in relation to your role as an OA, so wouldn't it make sense to put them all under one heading? Do users/owners typically revise posts to their talk pages in this way? Is that encouraged or frowned upon on Wikipedia? -MonopterusAlbus (talk) 01:54, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Good questions! No, the number of sections is not a problem. Generally speaking, you should only add your comment to an existing section if you're discussing the same topic. To me, it makes sense that each greeting I get from a student is in its own section -- each one is a new "thread". Users/owners typically *do not* modify their own talk pages, and yes, it is frowned upon. The talk page should be an accurate record of the conversation. Having said that, I do sometimes correct obvious mistakes, like bad indenting or *not* starting a new section where there clearly should have been one. Klortho (talk) 00:51, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Chris! Does the number of sections ever get confusing? I would think that a user editing a wiki page would have to scroll through the talk page for quite a while to determine how to even begin editing a talk page and discussing the article, since many users can create a looong list of sections (similar to how your talk page currently is). Is this the way we should approach editing wikipedia articles?Tisquestra (talk) 03:36, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Tisquestra. Yes, the situation is not ideal. I rely heavily on email notifications, and when I get one, I click on the second of the "difference" links, the one labelled "for all changes since your last visit." Then I glance at the differences report to see what is new. That's how I found your question, even though it is embedded deeply in my talk page. There is also a way to archive old talk page threads, which you will often see on articles that are very controversial, and thus generate lots of discussion. You'll see that my talk page already has one archive page, and it's probably time for me to do it again. HTH Klortho (talk) 14:16, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Greetings from Dave

Hi Klortho, I just wanted to send you a quick "hello" as one of Professor Ogg's Molecular Biology students. Introduction

Hi, My name is Ryan and I am in the Molecular Biology class. I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks in advance for all of the help I'm sure I'll need! Sharkeyr (talk) 19:24, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Howdy! Hope you enjoy working on this project! Klortho (talk) 00:52, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Am I still registered in section 82 instead of 81?

Hello Chris, I'm still having a little trouble navigating through the Talk and the Sandbox pages, but I think it might have to do with me being still registered in the wrong section?? The following URL User_talk:MartinLubell indicates that I'm in Sect 82, but it could also be an older page?? Anyway, thanks for your help, and I'll continue to do changes in my User_talk:MartinLubell/sandbox (with a small "s"). MartinLubell (talk) 04:36, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Ah, I see the confusion! It seems there's a disconnect in the materials you've been provided. The tutorial video describes "sandbox", with a lowercase "s", but the template I put on everybody's talk pages links to "Sandbox", with a capital "S". I've reported the problem to the Education program guys. In the meantime, just continue to use "sandbox", as you have been, and ignore the link on your talk page. I'd like to introduce myself

Hi! I just want to say hello and let you know that I'm part of Dr. Sherry Ogg's Molecular Biology class at JHU. This is my first foray into working with editing on Wikipedia. The tutorial pages have been helpful thus far, but as we progress with our group projects, I know I will have more questions. I look forward to working with you throughout the project. My name is Jen and I am in the molecular biology sec 81 class. Thank you for your help earlier this semester via email. Jbmcgregor (talk) 03:28, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Jen! You're welcome! Klortho (talk) 12:04, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

HELLO

Hello Klortho, My name is Tiara and I am apart of Dr. Ogg's Molecular Biology course at JHU. I am very interested in learning more about how wikipedia works. I'm sure this whole process will be trial and error but it will be worth it. Just a little information about myself... This is my second semester at JHU and I currently work full-time for the USDA in St.Louis, MO. Tbrownc1 (talk) 03:46, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello from last semester ;)

Hi there! I've been out of commission over the past 2 months, but wanted to thank you for your support in my Wikipedia contributions post-Cell Bio! Hopefully, you'll be proud to know I've taken it back up and have just added a section to the Listeria page here on Wikipedia, looking forward to many more to come ;) Thanks Klortho! Jennifergr (talk) 23:26, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Wow, this is great! I'm very excited to see this, thanks for letting me know! Klortho (talk) 16:38, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

References

Hi Chris, I just had a quick (hopefully!) question on references. I was able to make references within the text, but when i try to create a footnote with the references listed I'm having trouble. I tried creating a section and using the { { Reflist } } markup, but it keeps coming up blank. Am I missing something simple? Thanks! Sharkeyr (talk) 21:24, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. First, sorry, I edited your sandbox page! I meant to just use the "preview" feature to see if I could figure out what was going wrong, but I hit "save" by mistake. If you look at it now, you'll see that it works with Reflist. I think that the problem was that you had <References/> in the wikitext, and that was somehow messing things up. I really don't quite understand it. But anyway you can see the differences between your old version, and the latest version save by me, here. Hope that helps! Klortho (talk) 05:20, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I still seem to be having the same issue on the project webpage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:USEP/Courses/JHU_MolBio_Ogg_2013/Group_82G. I'm using the Reflist markup, but nothing is showing up. Sharkeyr (talk) 16:53, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, that's interesting. I notice that the difference is that you are using Reflist and your classmate (who's references are showing up) is using <references />. I am not sure, but it seems that these two can't coexist on the same page. The real problem seems to be that when you have multiple Reflists on a page, you have to tell each one which "section" to get the references from. I was able to get it to work on my sandbox page, here, by changing them to, for example, . But, on a normal article page, there will be only one notes/references section, and you won't need to do anything like that. Note that the assignment this week calls for these to be on your main sandbox page, so you won't need these kind of reference sections on your group page (although, if you want to keep them, and fix them the way I did, or by simply using <references /> as your teammate did, that would be fine too). Klortho (talk) 10:46, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks so much, I finally got it to work.Sharkeyr (talk) 14:44, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Editing Article Chart Section

I'm still having trouble understanding how we are supposed to edit the chart to select our chosen article. Do you mind giving me directions other than what the class group page says. Thank you!!! Autumn Zack-Taylor (talk) 20:05, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Autumn. Go to your group page, then click the "Edit" link at the top. You'll see wiki-markup for the article table -- it is a little cryptic looking, but if you stare at it, it should start to make sense. Search in there for the article you want to claim. For example, "Acetylation". The line after that will look like this:
| Group 82X
Change the "82X" in that line, in two places, to "82F", so that it looks like this:
| Group 82F
Be careful not to change anything else. If you are still having trouble, send me an email and then maybe we could get together on the phone and I'll walk you through it. Klortho (talk) 14:00, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the directions, but I don't see an option to edit our class group page. Maybe since we are the students for the class we don't have access to edit the page? Autumn Zack-Taylor (talk) 14:17, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
You should have seen a message from Dr. Ogg by now -- I split the articles tables out into separate pages, that you can edit. Let me know if you still have a problem. Klortho (talk) 14:57, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I still don't see an option to edit the chart. I see that someone in our class was able to edit the group number for one of the articles they chose. Do you mind walking me through how to edit the chart. Should I be able to see an edit option or is there a different method to edit? Thank you for all your help. Autumn Zack-Taylor (talk) 23:15, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
You are in section 82. The table of articles for your section is here: Wikipedia:USEP/Courses/JHU MolBio Ogg 2013/Articles 82. Try editing that. I will also email you with my daytime and cell phone numbers, and if you still have trouble, give me a call. Klortho (talk) 13:58, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
I was able to edit the table of articles, Thank you so much for all of your help! Autumn Zack-Taylor (talk) 14:20, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Chris, I'm having the same problem in my 81 class: I don't see the "Edit" button. Thanks MartinLubell (talk) 16:45, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

My bad, I just realized that there is the link just below the Articles section's title. I'll be able to edit it now. Ciao, MartinLubell (talk) 20:10, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Sorry

I might not have recognised your email. Students have posted on my talk page, and I've responded, but nothing's come of it so far. To be honest, I'm entirely clear what I am supposed to be doing. Serendipodous 07:03, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I'm a bit out of the loop. I think it might be best if I step away. I think I was away from this for too long. Serendipodous 17:47, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

How to correct(or replace) an anonymous sign with my wikiID(mhk5600)

While I was working on Unit 6 in Wiki project as a part of Molecular biology class, I posted my 2 comments on group's talk page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:USEP/Courses/JHU_MolBio_Ogg_2013/Group_82D) without logging into Wiki first. So my posts were completed as "anonymous user", like this "... 68.116.172.204 (talk) 10:15, 5 March 2013 (UTC)...". How could I correct it? I am guessing that simple replacement with "/~~~~" at those anonymous sign spots might not going to work, because that would insert a current time stamp in it. Any solution for sych a case? Thanks a lot. /Mhk5600 (talk) 14:58, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Min. Yes, for this kind of question, the answer usually is, click the "edit" button, look at what it looks like somewhere where it is correct, and then copy-and-paste it to the place where you want to fix. If you do that on the page your referring to, you'll see that when you sign with ~~~~, the wikipedia software replaces it with something like "Mhk5600 (talk) 14:47, 5 March 2013 (UTC); whereas, if you sign without being logged in, it will look like "68.116.172.204 (talk) 14:34, 5 March 2013 (UTC)". Feel free to replace the "Special Contributions" portion (everything before the time) with the correct wikitext. Does that make sense? Klortho (talk) 20:40, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Unit 5 Assignment Question

Hi Chris, I was wondering the difference between the Diberri filling tool and the Cite tool. I thought the Cite tool was an "upgraded" form of the Diberri. Can you explain to me where I'm incorrect. Many Thanks.DougCovert (talk) 19:49, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

I don't think they are related, but I'm not too sure. I just know that we were given advice that for articles under the WikiProject MCB, it's best to use Diberri's tool, for consistency's sake. It is important, not only because of how the references look, but because Diberri's tool formats the metadata in a consistent way, that is machine readable, and useful for text mining applications, for example. Citations

Hi Chris, In unit 5 we were assigned to write a short paragraph that cited at least 2 sources, and cited at least one source, 2 or more time. When I used the "cite" tool to create my footnotes, it created a new number each time I cited a source, even if it was the same one. For instance, I have footnote numbers 2,3,4,5 in my paragraph but 2 and 4 are the same source, as are 3 and 5. This caused me to be docked points in the assignment, but I don't know what to do differently to correct that issue. I hope you can help! Thanks!PJCollettJHU (talk) 01:07, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

The problem wasn't what you described: the footnote numbers that you're describing are expected and correct. The problem was that you didn't use Diberri's template filling tool; instead, I think, you used the citation template tool within the Wikipedia editor. For example, this citation:

If I use Diberri's tool, with a PubMed ID of 20617142, and the "add ref tag" box checked, I get this:

The instructions were pretty explicit that you're supposed to use that tool. Sorry if you missed it, we'll try to make it more clear next time.
