Welcome[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, Just H, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome! - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:29, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is this place run?[edit]

Let's see: everything we write must be from a reputable source like a book or a government website or some such; we must maintain neutral point of view in everything we write, anyone can edit any page other than George W. Bush, which is our most precious article, and use for of these things (~) to sign your name. You already know that, I think. Anything else? There are almost 1000 administrators who can delete, block users, and protect pages. If you need help figuring something out, ask - {{helpme}} - or ask me. See ya. - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:38, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was one earlier. Read Wikipedia:Administrators - CrazyRussian talk/email 14:43, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The short answer is that Wikipedia, like many wikis, is run by consensus. :-) Kim Bruning 15:18, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We call them cabals. They tend to balance each other out though. Apparently the structure is common enough that it shows up on organisation culture surveys. Kim Bruning 10:50, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA[edit]

Thanks!

Thank you very much for your support on my recent Request for Adminship. The request was ultimately unsuccessful - which wasn't entirely surprising - and so I'll be taking special care to address the concerns raised by the opposing !voters before running again. If you have any feedback for me, please don't hesitate to leave it at my talk page. Thanks!

The Halo's RfA[edit]

Fair use image use[edit]

Please do not add fair use tagged images to templates as you did here and here. Per Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9, the use of fair use tagged images on templates is proscribed. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. Thanks, --Durin 16:32, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for voting[edit]

File:In-the-dark.jpg

Thank you for voting in my RfA which at 51/20/6 unfortunately did not achieve consensus. In closing the nomination, Essjay remarked that it was one of the better discussed RfAs seen recently and I would like to thank you and all others who chose to vote for making it as such. It was extremely humbling to see the large number of support votes, and the number of oppose votes and comments will help me to become stronger. I hope to run again for adminship soon. Thank you all once more. Wikiwoohoo 19:52, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply[edit]

It's very hard to say. You are just beginning, and have much potential. Keep it up, and once you have 3000-4000+ edits, I suggest you have another edit review, or even try out. RFA is a serious business, and many have strict guidelines. bibliomaniac15 02:05, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It depends. Generally 3000+ is encouraged, although if you have top, high quality edits such as User:Opabinia regalis, who passed RFA with about 2000+ edits, it is possible. bibliomaniac15 05:22, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Thank you for your stub submission. You may wish to note that it is preferable to use a stub template from Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types instead of using simply {{stub}}, if you can.

Thanks! --Vox Causa 23:14, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before getting into a revert war, you might want to check out the talk page (and the archives) as to why the Senate Historical Office phrase is in there. It was a compromise that was implemented after a very long argument erupted on the talk page over Mr. Obama's race...I, for one, am not keen on revisiting the issue... Gzkn 07:39, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree with you, I think you'll find a lot of other editors who would not...:) I actually think the whole sentence is rather unnecessary, but eh, I can live with the compromise. Gzkn 07:48, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the argument was about whether it was okay to say "he is the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history and the only African American presently serving in the U.S. Senate" without qualifying with an "according to..." Some objected to this wording because it lacked a qualifying "according to...". The "according to the senate historical office" bit was the compromise that was reached, and the consensus at the talk page indicated it was fine (as opposed to the bare "he is..." version). See the lengthy discussions here. I'm afraid that your edit will just open up a can of worms once more. I'm not going to revert again, but I urge you to reconsider your change and discuss it at the talk page first. Gzkn 08:07, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If I can jump in... I came over here to say something similar as Gzkn did - I had not seen this exchange here earlier. I did reinstate the consensus wording, and added a note to Talk. I think the whole thing is overblown and unnecessary, but I know how hard it is to reach consensus on anything on wiki, and I want to respect that, especially after I finally took the time to slog through the archives and saw what led to this. So I am more than willing to go along with it - at worst it's a little redundant since the historical office part is in the note, but that's not so serious - at least there was agreement that this was an accurate neutral statement. Honestly, I'm a lot more concerned about the virulent vandalism this page experiences - which your edit was certainly not - than I am about the precise wording of Obama's ethnicity. It's not exactly as if it were in doubt - it's all laid out in the article, he himself describes his background quite clearly - and I have no idea why there is so much fuss here about it. Yup, sometimes it's hard to fathom. Tvoz 16:52, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not in the band The Shiny Diamonds[edit]

In fact, I have never even met them before. I currently live in Paris and they live in Vancouver (my home town). I heard their music for the first time today on their myspace page. I created The Shiny Diamonds controversy page because I firmly believe that it can meet all wikipedia policies and guidelines. It has been covered by CBC Radio One, the Washington Post, and by City News International. My main motivation for getting this one article to stay alive is that I believe that wikipedia should not become the sum of SOME human knowledge. I recently learned that I'm an inclusionist. Because I'm a still learning the proper ways to create articles on Wikipedia, I have probably screwed it all up. I could really use some help from someone like you. Thank you for your help so far. Hi. You offered an opinion that I'm having a hard time parsing. It was "Keep and No Vote on the other ones." Implied is "Keep [list that I can't identify] and No Vote on the other ones." I can't tell what list you have in mind for your keep opinion, and encourage you to go make it clear. I had one list of six, Uppland had a different list, and you may have a third list or mean one of ours. Can you clarify this? GRBerry 17:11, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming new users[edit]

Hi Just H, thanks for welcoming so many new users. One quick note, when you leave the {{welcome}} notice on users' talk pages, its preferable to substitute the tag. You can do this by typing {{subst:welcome}}. Thanks, Gwernol 18:05, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I really appreciate being welcomed to wikipedia. You wouldn't by any chance happen to know if the design for the flag used in the Comoros from 1975-1978 is copyrighted by anyone, would you? ::smile:: Hammon27 19:43, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply[edit]

It would really depend. While edit count is a good thing, one cannot rely on it solely. Things like how you answer the questions, your accomplishments, your civility, and your participation in Wikipedian functions hold much more weight than edit count. Don't stress yourself out to achieve an edit count. Just edit at a regular pace, and you'll do fine. bibliomaniac15 22:18, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that you are very ambitious, but I would really caution against you going for adminship at this time. Looking at your latest 250 edits, the vast, vast majority of them are welcoming others. While I don't oppose this (I welcome many newcomers myself), you really need to expand to mainspace. Most of the admins and reviewers in RFA are very strict upon this rule. Unless your 1700+ edits are extremely top quality, I would strongly advise against running for adminship next week. Keep expanding, and don't push yourself so hard. Development to adminship is a steady process. bibliomaniac15 22:33, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, no. However, why mess up several times instead of getting it right the first? bibliomaniac15 22:43, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I was trying to use shorthand by removing the function parameters in the hope you would understand. What I meant, with regard to my previous comments, is that the first function should look like:

 return addlilink(tabs, url, name, id, title, key) ;

Logging[edit]

Logging of the channel is allowed, but you cannot share logs with anyone, or make them public. In some jurisdictions, logging is illegal- for example, I live in Michigan, where it's considered similar to wiretapping your calls with someone else, and could result in prosecution (though I know of no case where this has occurred). Re:[edit]

1. How many article talk pages do you think will be significant enough for rfa status?

It depends on your mainspace edits. I see that you've been tagging articles...226 is a nice number, but I think you need to have a couple more article talk that's discussion-related though (like your post in Talk:Homosexuality and Christianity).

2. I really can't get into the Village Pump or project talk pages so far, alot of stuff that is done on talk pages elsewhere is done on regular pages in project space it seems.

hmm? Do you mean that you found it hard to join the discussions in those pages because it's all related to the work done in regular pages and that specific project space?

AQu01rius (User • Talk) 23:37, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see. I am sort of similar too. I don't like spending a lot time on talk pages either. Most of the time I just be bold on writing, creating and explain on talk pages when I feel it's needed or if it's requested.

It may be ok for admin candidates to not have that much article talk, but you have to have somewhere around 100 Wikipedia talks, or people will oppose you. I think this'll be one of the things you need to focus on.

I don't think self-nomination is that much of a factor. The only thing about self-nom is that, if you nominate yourself when your not ready yet, you might get humiliated more.

Anyways, if you can work on the following things, I'll try help nominating you (I need to practice on nominating)!

 1. Have at least 100 Wikipedia talk!
 2. Work on getting 2006 New England Patriots season to be featured. (Which will likely satisfy the mainspace contribution requirement)
 3. Make sure you have at least another 1000 edits next month. Consistency in edits is one of the requirements.
 4. Establish how you would "need" the admin tools (Common question on RFA).

More further, you can try to reply the admin questions (and some optional ones) in RFA. Make sure you can answer each of them with at least a long paragraph. Also, occationally read through the oppose votes. AQu01rius (User • Talk) 00:27, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:ImgDynCA4HZ202.jpg[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:ImgDynCA4HZ202.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 03:18, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editing question[edit]

Hi JustH. Thank you for your "welcome" message. I have a question about how changes to a page, or disputes, are noticed and dealt with. Specifically, I came across a page for David Israel, and I think there are some problems with it. I addressed my concerns in the Talk/Discussion area, and included a "disputed" flag. What happens next? And how do I know if or when someone responds (other than checking the page occasionally)? Thanks. Vbd 23:54, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
