Watch Tower directors tables[edit]

I like the presentation of the tables for the Watch Tower Society directors. But what is your rationale for concluding that Fisher and Macmillan each had two separate tenures as director? Some sources indicate that they were re-elected as directors, but that is something that happened each year, and the sources don't say that they stopped being directors in between. Also, the two tables could probably be merged into one? The point where one ends and the next begins seems fairly arbitrary. Thanks.--Jeffro77 (talk) 09:02, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The source for Fisher and Macmillan having this gap is the article "Annual Meeting of Shareholders", in: The Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence, January 15, 1919, p. 24 (reprints p. 6379) that says, "At about 8:30 p.m. the result of the ballot was announced, as follows: J. F. Rutherford 112,000, C. A. Wise 111,712, R. H. Barber 97,828, W. E. Van Amburgh 88,307, W. E. Spill 84,148, W. F. Hudgings 75,942, C. H. Anderson 70,113, E. J. Coward 59,917, H. H. Riemer 53,134, J. F. Stephenson 52,081, E. H. Thomson 48,410, G. F. Kendall, 1,769. The seven who received the highest number of votes cast and who were declared by the judges of election as having been duly elected members of the Board of Directors of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society for the ensuing year, were: J. F. Rutherford, C. A. Wise, R. H. Barber, W. E. Van Amburgh, W. E. Spill, W. F. Hudgings, C. H. Anderson."
So, Fisher and Macmillan were not even listed for election as one of seven directors. (There could never be more than seven according to the charter.) Probably, because they were in prison. Of course, Rutherford and Van Amburgh also were in prison with them, but they were the President and Secretary-treasurer and reelected in exile, while Fisher and Macmillan had no office and were replaceable by new vice-president Wise and William Hudgings. In 1920, after being released, Fisher and Macmillan got their offices back, replacing Barber (who also replaced Bohnet in 1919) and Spill respectively.
Yes, the cut is arbitrary, but that's the fault of the Watch Tower Society because it did not provide information of succeeding directors between 1975 and 1987 when the Revisions to the Pennsylvania Charter were published. That's why we don't know who succeeded which person and that's why I put questions marks there originally. For example, the February 15, 1983 Watchtower mentions Barr being reelected in 1982, but who did he succeed: Groh after he died in 1975, Knorr after he died in 1977 or Jackson after he died in 1981? And who could have succeeded Suiter in 1983? We are entirely left in the dark on all positions except President Franz, Vice-President Henschel and Secretary-Treasurer Swingle between 1975 and 1987 because they lived through. An excellent summary. Based on on your response, I have restored the question marks to reflect the 7 director positions you've indicated in the charter. I have kept the references for the people whose tenures ended rather than with the question marks, as the sources refer to the named individuals rather than the 'vacancies'. (I'm not sure though that each director explicitly had a 'successor' per se, and it may be that some directors were not immediately replaced.)--Jeffro77 (talk) 07:25, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Correct grammar[edit]

Despite your deference to a Watch Tower Society Yearbook from the 1970s, the correct grammar is indeed "Jehovah's Witnesses is ... a denomination", for the same reason that a native English speaker would not say "Mad Men are a television series", despite men being plural. This is standard usage for compound proper nouns containing a plural form that function in the singular. Additionally, your confusion may stem from the Watch Tower Society's ambiguous usage of the same term to interchangeably refer to the denomination or its members collectively. Categories[edit]

I've removed various categories that were added to redirects for current and former JW Governing Body members. Article categories are not generally used for redirects. For more information, see Wikipedia:Categorizing redirects.
