Help question[edit]

I wanted to add a picture of the Civil Rights Memorial that I took about a year ago. I think this would greatly improve that page as well as Maya Lin's page (the architect), but I ran into two problems.

First: the date that the picture was taken appears on the picture. Second: I wanted to copyright my image, but was not sure how to follow the format.

I would be grateful if someone could give me step by step instructions on either of these.

OK. Firstly, the date on the photo. I think you are asking how to get rid of it. If that's what you want to do, you can crop the image in any photo editing software (tell me your operating system, and what sort of photo software you have if you need help with that). Alternatively, you could ask another Wikipedian to crop the image for you. Tell me if that's what you want to do.

Secondly: the licence. The rule is: "If you upload a file here to which you hold the copyright, you must license it under the GNU Free Documentation License or release it into the public domain." So if you want the image in the article you have to give up your copyright, this means that anyone can use the image for free.

Well I would like license my picture but I was unable to follow the rules for creating this copyright. Also, cropping the date off the picture would create an imbalence in the focus of the picture. Would there be anyway to mask this date? I recall someone using a blur tool, but I don't know if that could work (the numbers are in bright orange)--Jonthecheet 01:55, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The licence: well you can just choose a licence from the drop down box when you upload the file. I recommend you upload to the Commons (you can do that here) - that way other language Wikipedias will be able to use the image too. Just choose one of the Own work licences.

Masking the date. Rather than mucking aorund with blurring, I recommend uploading the image as-is. Another Wikipedian who is an expert with images can then mask the date for you.--Commander Keane 02:09, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply: where to help with biology[edit]

If you want to focus on just one taxonomic area, there's a lot to be done for articles on mollusks (snail, Gastropoda, slug, Helix (genus), etc.) and insects, also the bird article. People are currently active working on mussel, emperor penguin and pollination. It's a good idea to tag onto the heels of a group of people. If find editing as a group is more fun, and it is the quickest way to learn everything there is to know. If you want to join a Wikiproject, Wikipedia:WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles has been newly formed, and all the people are really great. If you're interested in mollusks, I'd be happy to start a Wikiproject with you.

There are quite a few articles that are well-written but do not have any references at all. Adding those references is hard work sometimes, but will get you a lot of credit and could lead to the articles becoming featured articles.

If you want to work on evolution articles, please ask me again, and I'll try and find some that need work. It's a good idea to nominate things on WP:AID, WP:SCOTW or WP:JI if you want to work on them, this will make other people aware of your efforts and might get you a few collaborators. When the article is good enough (generally means a few useful illustrations, and plenty of printed references, but check the criteria), you can nominate it for WP:GA.
