I Thought...

I thought part of the purpose of Wikipedia was to allow more obscure articles on lesser known things that a regular encyclopedia would not contain. Thus, I'm wondering what this deal is with my band (in the article "Brethren (band)") not being "significant enough" (as according to the reason for deletion)? We are an active band and making music, and we have a MySpace page showing all of this. Sure, we aren't signed and aren't well-known outside of our home town, but that's how many bands are or were, especially when they started. Despite this, we've had a fair share of history, and that's the main thing our Wiki page was talking about. So, anyway... I guess my question is, does the page really have grounds for removal? And can I get it back?

Sounds like a fun day! As for my jaw, I think I mentioned I broke it back in March, and was wired shut for 6 weeks. It's just residual pain I think, and as the weather changes, by jaw gets tight and sore, and it's getting a bit annoying! :) Jmlk 1 7 22:17, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Lol, I thought I had told ya! The combination of my face meeting the business end of a check in hockey didn't end up too well, and I woke up in the recovery room, full of morphine and no clue what happened really. It was honestly the worst time I have ever had in my entire life to this point. I had a horrible time. :( But anywho, that's over for the most part. I've been taking Advil the past 2 days actually, and while it's taking the edge off, I can still complain! We're getting only into the upper 60s and low 70s during the day(s) here, but cooling off into the 30s at night...brrrr! Winter will be here before we know it! Re: Bad AIV report

My understanding (from several other similar incidents) is that an anonymous IP talk page is no one's personal talk page, and that warnings and templates especially should not be removed. Otherwise vandals could wreak havoc on anonymous talk pages. If you do not wish to block and/or protect the page, will you be offended if I relist it at WP:AIV? Thanks. Lol, it used to take like a month or two before I would archive. Now, I'm lucky to get to a couple of weeks, if that! As for the time, I'm free sporadically, sometimes quite a bit, other time not at all. The life of us college kids eh? I would say take a perusal over virtual classroom, see if anything is interesting/necessary in your opinion. I know you have an editor review going on (in the signature), and there's nothing better for uhm, bettering your editing skills than an editor review. I really wish I had done one in fact. You're doing quite well with work in admin-related areas, and I suggest keeping that up. Charlotte Collingwood & Kevin Locke

I do not understand your reasons for deleting these articles. The are about performers I have seen and been impressed with several times recently, The references are clearly verifiable. Charlotte Collingwood

Why is Charlotte Collingwood notable? As well as having been a West End actress (Lady In The Dark: Royal National Theatre 1997, original cast recording ASIN: B000006PVR), she is one of the busiest singers in England. As well as over 100 gigs a year as part of a duo, her quartet and quintet are fully booked for months ahead. She is certainly notable enough for her corporate clients for 2005-2006 to include: Dresdner Kleinwort , John Lewis Partnership, Saatchi & Saatchi, Sainsbury’s and Tesco. That site has been maintained continuously since 2001, philosophically expounds upon the concept of Black Sun, and certainly warrants listing under the Black Sun section. If it does not, then you will have to get rid of all other commercial and non-comercial links under that category. Black Sun Journal is non-profit and non-commercial. I don't think one admin has the authority to make this kind of determination. It sounds like you are trying to be the ideology police. Chill out please.

Grooveshark

6 October 2007 you deleted the article about Grooveshark citing CSD G4: Recreation of deleted material, which was originally deleted because of Criteria for Speedy Deletion, A7.

However, I believe that A7 does not apply to Grooveshark any longer:

As you can see by following some of those links there is some controversy surrounding Grooveshark's approach to music sales (especially their EULA) and a Wikipedia entry would seem like a good place to go for information, however at this time the article is locked to prevent people from re-creating it. Can you please review your decision to lock this article? Thanks.

My advice

This will no doubt seem peculiar, and I have no idea whether it's de rigeur to contact you, but Dihydrogen Monoxide linked, in my RfA, to a conversation you two had where you seemed ticked that your assessment of people as not experienced enough was getting you accused of 'editcountitis'. So, while it might not be the thing to do, I wanted to explain why I think they reacted that way in my case, with arguments under your oppose and comments in my support saying you don't know what you're talking about.

The first issue was, in my statement, I specifically said that my edit count was low, and explained why, linking to a page where I had most recently made about 30 edits and added 6 cites, in one technical 'edit'. If you wanted people to know that you had paid attention to my editing style, and still felt that though I amy prone to big editing you still considered it one edit, you should have said something about that.

Second, though I don't believe you're using a template, I have found at least two other RfAs that you opposed with the exact same sentence, word for word, down to that trailing '...yet'.

Finally, as was also pointed out to you, 'experience' is a very vague term, when no admin on Wikipedia can (or indeed, should) do everything. Admin candidates (especially those who fail their nom), NEED to know what to do to please people. Even if I pass this nom, which seems likely, I'd still appreciate knowing even one thing that needs improving. I'll *always* appreciate knowing one thing that needs improving.

So, should you want to avoid editcountitis accusations in the future, first, don't cut and paste the same quote (even if you're not pasting :-) ). When you do edit articles, you've no doubt rewritten a thing or two that you found on another page, to avoid infringement ;-). I'd recommend that though you're often giving the same basic reason, treat your opposes the same way, and take a few seconds to not infringe yourself. Second, even if you're pressed for time, make it a point to say something that indicates you have looked at the candidate's edit history, instead of just the edit count. Use a pronoun :-). A simple statement (say, in my case, of 'She's done good work recently with the Next Iron Chef candidates, but...') can go a long way to avoiding people's assumptions, and in my case at least, you wouldn't even need to go off the first page of my edit history.

As for the pressed for time thing, the RfA is open for a week. There is no need to jump in 90m after a nom is open to the public and support or oppose so quickly. Taking a little time, even if you make up your mind in 30s, so you can be sure your decision is right and people won't make assumptions due to your speed, is something else that might help avoid the outcry. I'm not a decision that needs to be made that quickly, but the swiftness with which you oppose causes people to think you're not truly looking at the candidates' history (I know you've encountered this before, with snark about 'oh, really. You looked over all 3000 entries this morning?' commentia).

I don't mind the oppose or anything; I knew I'd get some, and in fact am surprised its been limited to just two so far. I believe that you opposed in good faith, and I have no problems with it. I just know that you seem like you've been frustrated in the past by the editcountitis accusations, so I thought I'd offer this advice (that turned into an essay!) so you can avoid it in the future, even when/if you're just opposing on a gut instinct that the RfA nominee 'needs more experience' ;-) --Thespian 10:09, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

I would honestly give anyone who asked my true thoughts on the whole topic of what I mean by "experience" or lack thereof when it comes to RFAs, but I honestly don't see many (if any) people doing much more than scoffing or rolling their proverbial eyes at my answer(s). Far too many people put a set threshold of edits for a "support" in and Rfa at 2,000 or 2,5000 or 3,000 etc. I honestly think that to be too low myself... ah, the edicountitis shines through right? I've seen people bang out 1,100 edits in one day; doesn't mean I would want them to have the extra tools after a month of editing with 30,000+ edits. I do honestly hold this project dear, and I do not use an oppose template, nor anything of the sort. I'm caught flak for simply opposing someone's Rfa simply because they have 2,000 edits... a valid reason in my honest opinion. I could write prose, be poetic like some attempt to be, or even give detailed advice on how I think one could improve. Yet it always seems to come back and bite me in the ass. Do I think you're going to run amok and block tons of people, delete randomly, and unblock socks? No, I doubt that would happen. Do I have confidence in your abilities as an editor? I suppose; nothing to rise my concern. But do I trust that you will know what to do in certain situations only admins deal with? No, I cannot judge that upon your experience I see. Do I view this whole discussion as an attack or a personal issue? Hell no... it takes a lot for me to take offense at stuff, especially in terms of Wikipedia. Well said Jmlk. I for one have never "rolled my eyes" at your opposes. If anything since I became an admin I've toughened up regarding experience when it comes to commenting at RFA - from the outside it looks oh so easy, but when you actually start working with the tools it requires a lot finer touch than perhaps non-admins can realise. Ok, like you say, let us not set a threshold of edits. Let me just ask you this: 1) Do you agree that it might be possible that 2 or 3 excellent edits can demonstrate maturity/knowledge of policy/ability to deal with conflict, but on the other hand, 200 or 300 simple edits may not? Do you agree that quality of edits do matter when you want to determine "experience"? 2) Keeping that in mind, did you go through Thespian's [Special:Contributions] page before you opposed or did you just look at the number 2000 and make the decision? (I'll take your word for it). I am continuing this discussion because you stated that you are open to it. I do not think there is a lack of good faith on your part. Just to clarify at this point I agree with Jmlk that experience must be demonstrated. I also feel that edit count can go some way towards evidence of experience. However it's only a part. Nintendo DS homebrew protection

My Rfa

Thanks for voting in my Rfa, which I withdrew from yesterday. Though I did not get promoted, I see this Rfa as being a success nonetheless. What is meant to be and what is not...

Thank you for your recent comments and vote at my Request for Adminship. It was not successful. I don't believe this is unfortunate as it leaves me with much to ponder and a fresh slate from which I can better myself as an editor in order to be more compliant with the policies that are expected by Wikipedia.

If you feel that there is anything that was not covered by the RfA that I need improvement in, I would implore your input and feedback as I hope and intend to improve as best I'm guided.

Hi Jmlk17. I noticed you've blocked this IP as a schoolblock[1], whereas this is actually a cache proxy for Singapore's largest ISP, StarHub. It is a very shared IP, and generates an enormous number of complaints and unblock requests when it is blocked. I just thought you would like to know. Removed bad report?

Sure...sorry about the confusion. The user had only two edits recently, and has stopped since their vandalism. Many admins (myself included), are iffy about blocking someone who is inactive at the time. Jmlk 1 7 10:37, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Huh? This user has made nearly 30 edits over the last 6 weeks with all but one article edit reverted as vandalism. They have been dialoged with and warned and now are back doing the same gender vandalism they were engaged in last time. They were given a final warning and then re-did the exact same vandalism again. It's incredibly frustrating to deal with anon vandals when not given more admin support. I fully expect this user to resurface on other transgender articles to again play gender pronoun games and would like to have them know that vandalism is not acceptable and warnings are serious.
