How can I get a private wiki with the same look-and-feel as Wikipedia?[edit]

I saw this question in Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous), but because I have done what you are asking about, I am answering on your talk page. I have a web site which works just like Wikipedia, because it is powered by MediaWiki. I avoided the considerable technical task of installing MediaWiki by using a hosting company which provided the software already installed. I have a registered domain name for the web site, but a good web hosting company can help you with that, too.

After warning you about the lack of templates, which can be a serious problem if you are not technically skilled, and a serious task to create them if you are technically skilled, §FreeRangeFrog^croak says good luck! I take it then that Mediawiki does not include the templates which Wikipedia uses? (I have looked at the Mediawiki website but every 3rd or 4th word is in a language I do not understand!) Am not quite sure what 'template' means, although I have read the Wikipedia article on it.

Just right, MediaWiki does not include the templates, and it is a task for the technically skilled to adapt a Wikipedia template for MediaWiki.

Thanks for these comments - I am not technically skilled (although I have been using computers since the 1960s - so 'deskilled' is more accurate!) I often feel the need for a private wiki - mainly as a place for recording gobbits of information, and then gradually melding them into something more coherent.

I would suggest that the private wiki is not what you need, and too technically challenging for you to create and use with any degree of success. Let me think about your objective, and perhaps I will suggest a different software tool for you that would be cheaper and easier for you. Incidentally, you should be signing every entry on the talk page with ~~~~ by entering those four characters, or by using the signature icon, third from the left at the top of the edit page. Reversion of edit[edit]

Hi, I've deleted the information you added here [1] for several reasons: facebook pages are not usually regarded as reliable sources, civilian casualties are not generally specified by name, and even in a timeline article, Wikipedia is not designed to function as a news service listing all current events, no matter how poignant they may be. I'd suggest taking this to the talk page before restoring the information. On further contemplation, this also caught my eye because the mentioning of the rate of civilian casualties, as well as the naming of individuals, could give the impression that a none neutral point was intended. Thank you anonymous - I feel the naming is important (where possible) because otherwise it is difficult to determine duplication or double-counting. It is also generally done where Israelis are killed by Palestinians (which deals with your other point). Please revert.

Hi; I wouldn't restore. Not only is the source not acceptable per Wiki guidelines, we don't cite individuals unless they've been established as otherwise notable, and the bulk of the article reflects that policy. What is seen there is not an historic timeline that attempts a broad overview of incidents, but a prose article about an Israeli settlement where the mentioning of specific crimes is more appropriate. The same article also names Palestinian victims in the following section [2]; given our guidelines re: mentioning of non notables, I'm dubious about the need to specify the individuals, regardless of affiliation, by name. If there is a bias in Wikipedia articles as you're implying--I haven't done a study, and can't comment on it in general--you haven't noted a good example to support the theory, and the move at the timeline article, for the reasons explained above and to which you've not responded, was not the way to remedy it. If you believe there's a widespread bias, I'd suggest beginning a discussion at a relevant article talk page, or taking it up at an appropriate noticeboard, like Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard. 99.136.252.89 (talk) 13:08, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tip for next time...[edit]

If you create something like John Alderton (medic) and decide it was a mistake (before anyone else has added anything substantial), the best thing is to blank the article(ie remove all the contents), and preferably add {{db-author}}. Both of these then qualify it for Speedy Deletion G7 as "author of the only substantial content has requested deletion in good faith, either explicitly or by blanking the page", and it gets out of the system as soon as possible - rather than hanging around and getting more work done it by other editors. It's probably one of the lesser-known CSD criteria, but a useful way to tidy up! (Oh, and your link to the pdf file didn't seem to work ... I was checking it to see whether he was ..S.. or ..T.. because I'd noticed the mismatch between title and text, but it never loaded on screen.) Happy Editing. PamD 11:12, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Note on citing sources[edit]

I see that you're citing sources in your work on Wikipedia, which is a good thing. To make the work easier, especially when you cite a source more than once, you should probably use "ref" tags. If you look at the source of the Crambeck article, I've given an example with the Comitatus link. Put <ref> and </ref> around the link, and it will appear at the bottom of the article, in the reflist (that is, if there's a {{reflist}} template or a <references /> tag in the article). Wikilinks[edit]

I advise you to ignore that advice. Red links are appropriate in articles, if it is likely that an article might be created in the future on that topic. See WP:REDLINK. Looking at the batch of links which the above editor reverted at Halifax Minster:

I doubt that there will be a separate article on the memorial, so have unlinked it - though I may be wrong
Bishop Ferrar was not a good link, but I've traced him as Bishop Robert Ferrar!
Joseph Bentley Leyland hasn't got an article yet but is likely to have one - see http://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10.1093/oi/authority.20110803100103542 for a start.
He also unlinked a couple of perfectly reasonable links in that section, to Nostell and Branwell.

When you add a reference for information you have found in a book on Google books, please treat it as a reference to a book, which happens to be available online at Google: ie give the author, title, publisher, isbn, date of the book, and the page number, as well as the url. You can see how I've upgraded your reference which appeared as a link to "p.41", and is now a proper reference. There's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia, but it's an interesting journey. As reviewing administrator, I did not delete it: it indicates the possibility of importance. AAnd in fact, checking the references, I see the obit from J RSS and the medal they gave him. Please add the references and the information. , focussing on the things that are important according to WP:PROF. Thomas Pearson - why does he merit an article?[edit]

You haven't told us why Thomas Pearson (c.1740-1781) should have an encyclopedia article. Yes, there's evidence he existed. But what else? Do you consider that he was notable as a book collector? If so, tell us in the opening sentence. What we've got here is a brief biography of someone who existed, and of whom someone else in 1902 thought it was worth including him in a book about book collectors. Why should he be in Wikipedia?

Even if something is old enough to be out of copyright, please write the text in your own words and focus it on Wikipedia's readers, rather than just pasting in a chunk of biography from an external source.

Atkinson architects[edit]

Hallo, in this edit last year you added info about the subject's grandsons, sourced with a vague Pevsner ref (which someone has since removed). (Well, I say vague: it's a "refname + page no" in an article which doesn't include the reference). There's an article about the middle generation, Peter Atkinson (architect, born 1776), which doesn't mention the sons. I wonder if you could find your source and add a better ref for the info, and perhaps then add it into the father's article where it would seem more relevant? (I just came across one of the Peters while sorting out Category:People stubs, renamed them both in accordance with WP:QUALIFIER, then wondered about the third generation!). Hi JB1944. I noticed that you have added some sources to the above article and that you took down the PROD tag. Are you also planning on expanding the content of the article to more firmly establish the notability of the subject? Please see WP:N for an explanation of standards for inclusion in the encyclopedia. It is important to remember that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of knowledge. Just because a subject exists doesn't mean it belongs in an encyclopedia and I am having a hard time seeing anything especially notable about the subject(s) of this particular article.
