Welcome[edit]

Hello Jay, welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. You can learn more on the how to edit page. The naming conventions and manual of style pages are also useful. Feel free to experiment at the Wikipedia:Sandbox. If you have any questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. Angela

Quote characters[edit]

It's not grammar, exactly: it's half Wikipedia markup, half the difference between different forms of the language. If you enter sample text the software renders it as sample text (i.e., in italics). Other than that, US writers and editors use double quotes (", not ) first, then single quotes within those if necessary for quotes within quotes. British writers and editors do the reverse. The convention in philosophy is as you described: single quotes to signify that a term is being used as a word, not for its meaning.

I hope that helps, or at least doesn't confuse you further.Vicki Rosenzweig 23:41, 29 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Mahatma[edit]

See the 2003-08-31t11:31z Talk:Mohandas Gandhi entry for why I think "Mohandas" is better. If someone were to search for the "Mahatma" version, they'd be redirected - work for the servers; reducing some of the internal redirects lessens the work for the servers. Do you think we should discuss Mahatma vs. Mohandas more before I make more changes? Thanks for picking up the road name error, I've linked to Mohandas while showing Mahatma. - Jeandré, 2003-09-01t21:08z

Jay: You put some thoughts on Mahatmas VS Mahandas on the page Talk:Mohandas Gandhi. You said that it wasn't necessary to edit Mahatmas to Mahandas. I agree with that because Mahatmas and Mahandas are virtually the same name! Juicyboy 325 That should be Mohandas ( not Mahandas!) Karamchand Gandhi.I think its proper to use Mohandas Gandhi than Mahatma as the later will only serve to confuse the user and the server will take the useless extra load.--asydwaters 16:08, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's[edit]

I know but I went there to change the formatting on the "see also" and whilst I was there I thought I might as well change the "it's" as well. I wouldn't have edited it only to do that. It wasn't wrong - just my preference! There are many articles where it's (meaning something belonging to 'it') is wrong though and those I do change. Angela 18:07, Sep 20, 2003 (UTC)

Several edits my same person[edit]

When I am the only one editing the page -- its quite unreasonable to argue that I am "clogging" the edit history. LirQ

Although I highly doubt that going through the edit histories is that important or useful -- and I highly doubt that my edits will render this task appreciably more difficult -- if, you actually believe this, then you should advocate that a simple feature be coded (as akin to the latest version of Recent Changes) which merges repeat edits (by a single user) into one lone edit. LirQ

I do use show preview. You should be glad that I take the time to correct errors which I notice. LirQ

Cath-22[edit]

I don't understand the comment you made on my talk page-- I thought that Catch-22 was not regarded as successful, precisely because it earned less than MASH. If this is not the case, what was it supposed to say? In any event, the original was gramatically incorrect, which is why I changed it-- I'm a huge pedant when it comes to that type of thing :-) Feel free to change the page to whatever you think makes sense. --bdesham 23:40, 28 Sep 2003 (UTC)

About the Catch-22 thing on witches - apparently it's called "trial by drowning". Catch-22 isn't really a paradox; it's just a no-win situation. Insane or not, you must continue flying missions. In a trial by drowning, guilty or innocent, you still end up dead. I just thought it maybe deserved mention :-) -- Wapcaplet 05:25, 30 Sep 2003 (UTC)

OLAP[edit]

Re OLAP/Olap. If all the articles you find put it in caps, then please cap it in the article. I based it largely on a couple of mag articles which did not cap it, but if the Google-test sez no... TwoOneTwo 20:18, 16 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Greetings[edit]

Hello. It seems that you are very valuable contributer to wikipedia, but I have not made your acquaintence yet, so I will now say, Nice to meet you. --Alexandros 16:51, 16 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Copyvio[edit]

Dear Jay, copyright violations should be posted in Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/copyvio. Moreover, if you spot a copyvio, you should substitute the text by the boilerplate text you can find in the copyvio page. Have fun! Muriel Victoria 13:47, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Greetings Jay. Sorry about the accidental snip of Fuji. Have rectified it. Have a nice day tomorrow as well. Moriori 18:55, Dec 2, 2003 (UTC)

MiG[edit]

Some thoughts on your reverting of MiG (08:01, 4 Dec 2003 . . Jay (reverted to last edit by 62.109.92.252, check talk page for "Was MiG-7 used in WW-II") ) posted here: Talk:MiG IOOI 22:32, 4 Dec 2003 (UTC)

IP blocking[edit]

I decided to err on the side of caution by not blocking the IP, especially since the user seemed to be changing IP often anyhow. Someone else may choose to block it. There's no really formal rules. -- Pakaran 08:51, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Removing resolved issues on talk[edit]

Re: your statement on my talk page. I find that, once a issue has been covered, it is easy and neat to remove the 'posts'. Other contributors leave 'posts' or archive them, I blank them. I don't believe there is any particular policy regarding this. Certainly blanking or editing attacks or unresolved issues would be unacceptable; I do neither. TwoOneTwo 16:42, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Sources[edit]

Ugh that was a while ago, I guess now I need to start sourcing stuff. In fact maybe someone ought to mention that right on the uploads page, it would probably save a lot of hassle. All I remember anymore about that image was that I got it from some news article. I guess it should probably get deleted as I can't say I remember where. Sarge Baldy 21:20, Dec 7, 2003 (UTC)

I actually meant about citing sources in the summary. But thanks for the link, I'll try emailing the author.

Wikibot[edit]

Wikibot will work on interlanguage links alphabetically starting with a specified word/letter. It is automatic after letter to start on is defined. In addition to standardizing links, wikibot can be instructed to add interlanguage links(even if the foreign language article has different name) missing from english pages. Alexandros 23:52, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)

1911[edit]

Good point. I've suggested the MSG text be modified at MediaWiki talk:1911. Angela. 01:35, 25 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Jakarta Tomcat and the theory of Copyediting[edit]

Hi Jay. No, I don't do technical writing for a living, just on Wikipedia :-) ... I tend to shun/amend passives as part of a wider desire to write E-Prime.

Hi, Saw that your edit was the latest in Tollywood and the only Indian in the edit history(without counting the anonymous editors:-))I think that the term refers to Bengali film industry- derived from Tollygunge. Do you know for sure that Tollywood is a name for the Telegu film industry ? KRS 12:55, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

India[edit]

Hi, I wrote water as a common terminology for Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea( Indian Ocean also?):-)Both our solutions don't seem to be correct. There should be some other alternative:-)KRS 08:27, 9 Mar 2004 (UTC)

"Female actors"[edit]

Because nobody uses the term "female actors" (maybe in India they do?), because "actress" is not a pejorative term and is the more exact and proper term, and because the previous title did not include the crucial word "movie". Everyking 13:51, 11 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Jay, why don't you make the change yourself if you feel it should be done? Makes me think you're trying to embroil me in some contentious dispute you don't want to get involved in. Everyking 07:16, 13 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Bharata[edit]

India is named Bharat after King Bharata the son of Dushyanta. BTW Bharata doesn't look like a disambiguation page (there are no links to other articles that disambiguate the 2 Bharatas) so I am removing msg:disambig. BTW who is the 3rd Bharata you mentioned in Talk:List_of_country_name_etymologies? -- Paddu 14:17, 17 Mar 2004 (UTC)

You said googling gave enough matches for Jada Bharata. I tried googling and got the matches: http://www.mantra-meditation.com/life-of-jada-bharata.html, http://www.intac.com/~vdayal/ksimay99.htm, http://www.ramakrishnavivekananda.info/vivekananda/volume_4/lectures_and_discourses/the_story_of_jada_bharata.htm and each say Jada Bharata was a reincarnation of King Bharata after whom India was named Bharatavarsa. adding rishabha to the search gave some links saying that King Bharata (not Jada Bharata, who was the son of a priest) was the son of Rishabha. So IMHO India is named after one King Bharata, whose father is diputed, and this particular king is believed to have been reborn as Jada Bharata. -- Paddu 14:53, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi, there have been some suggestions that we need to start cleaning out the old requests posted to Wikipedia:Peer review. You are receiving this because you have posted one or more requests that have been there a long time. When you have a moment, please check it out and remove the request(s), along with any related material, if you have received adequate feedback. Thanks! -- Wapcaplet 23:18, 25 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi Jay -- I'm sorry if I've caused any confusion. User:Qg added a dozen or so clearly copyvio photos to a number of articles about actresses (see Special:contributions/User:Qg). I've actually never tried to delete photos before, so I think I may have done something wrong, since the pictures haven't disappeared from the database. I'll have to try to figure that one out later today. And thanks for the note. BCorr|Брайен 12:36, Mar 26, 2004 (UTC)

Explanation[edit]

It's my contention that "x, son of y" does not look proper in an encyclopedia list. --Hemanshu 22:32, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Valuable information which is/can be/should be in the article linked to. List of people should ideally only have name followed by (birth year-death year) and profession as the article itself is the place for all other information related to the person and I think 'x is a son of y' should come very low on priority even in the article itself. Just my humble opinion. --Hemanshu 22:44, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

It's like this. The reason for inclusion in the list is not/should not be being the son of XYZ. Also it is not flattering to the individual concerned if the top 2 things u can say about that person is son of XYZ, spouse of ABC etc. not that we want to flatter anyone. <smile> In any case, for instance... it would be tempting to introduce Priyanka Gandhi as Priyanka Gandhi is the daughter of Rajiv Gandhi... but that's not good. we don't list sons of all prime ministers. so I made it "Priyanka Gandhi is an Indian politician or something of that sort and then followed it with... daughter of Rajiv Gandhi bit. I am interested in your opinion on this. --Hemanshu 23:14, 27 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Nobel header[edit]

Hi Jay, I'm sorry that I didn't take the time to notify you of the change I made to Template:NobelPrizes immidiately. What I did was to list it at Wikipedia:MediaWiki custom elements and apply the format, which currently is a standard. The current format used is not necessarily ideal, but I do believe that standardisation has some value. I was going to mention the over all discussion at Wikipedia talk:Article series, but it seems you have already found that. :) -- Mic 16:41, Mar 28, 2004 (UTC)

Where did I get which? Mostly from general internet searches, if the results seem reliable. Everyking 16:54, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Emeagwali and Hopper[edit]

WRT your comment on the Reference Desk, I believe the anonymous poster is speaking to a claim raised earlier that Wikipedia's coverage of computer-related topics is biased against women and "minorities" (by which they presumably mean non-whites). As I indicated by my comment and given his respectable but hardly earth-shattering achievements, I don't count Emeagwali's absence from the Wikipedia to date as evidence of systematic bias, either. --Robert Merkel 08:20, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Sorry I hadn't noticed the Murray section on the top. And reg. the systematic bias comment ... isn't Reference desk a fun place !

Toyota etymology[edit]

Jay, My change to the Toyota entry on List_of_company_name_etymologies wasn't an accidental reversion. The description "written in eight Japanese letters" is incorrect; the explanation on Toyota is correct and more thorough. -- Paul Richter 00:58, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Oops, I guess I did make a reversion. -- Paul Richter 04:49, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Curly brace syntax[edit]

I might give it a try. Only problem would be that I'm not sure what to fill it with besides listing the syntax for functions, if-else, while and for blocks... Fredrik 00:47, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Apache Jakarta[edit]

Thanks for the ping. I've replied at Talk:Jakarta Project, and will try to keep a watch there. --Zigger 16:17, 2004 May 7 (UTC)

Eponym[edit]

Thanks for starting "eponym", Jay. I love 'em. The problem is that the page is getting HUGE and I lack the expertise to classify the entries. Would you be in favour of splitting off eponyms into seperate categories (or even pages, as with the list of medical eponyms)? JFW | T@lk 23:03, 12 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Sorted alphabetically. In case of separation into other categories, that was already there here - Lists_of_etymologies#Eponyms or Names derived from people. Jay 10:07, 13 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Partial response to your query about minor edits[edit]

You've been here a long time and possibly know this, but one seldom knows who knows what in this game, so here it is (copied from the other page): Jay, you can probably save time (and do it quite safely if you have full control of your computer) by checking the box below the login button so that in future you are always logged in as soon as you come along.

Talk:Prizes named after people[edit]

I've added this to the talk page:

I don't see the need for this list, we have Category:Prizes that will give all the prizes, so this looks like duplication. If some are not named after people, then maybe create a sub category instead of a list? I'm mindful of the fact I've broken the list principle myself, but have come to see they are a headache to maintain. -Wikibob | Talk 13:32, 2004 Jun 21 (UTC)

oh..ok.. I'm not sure what the Category thing does though. Jay 14:09, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thank you, Jay[edit]

Thanks for the welcome and the advice about my personal article. I should not have decided to write it at 1 (or so) in the morning, but I did.  :-) I went in and made several changes. Thank you, too, for telling me about Wikipedia:Glossary. Raina 18:00, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Grade and Class[edit]

Good point you brought about regarding 'class' and 'grade' in Aishwarya Rai. Is there any article where I can find out the school/college-related terminologies in different countries with regards to the terms like grade, class, term, semester, names of vacations, etc. If we don't have this info as yet maybe we need to have it somewhere Jay 12:11, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks Jay for your note. IIRC, I came to know about the term 'grade' from my English professor. The author of my favorite book "Dare to Be Different" also often uses the term "grade". However, I don't know any place where we can find such terminologies. But, I had a longtime idea to tabularize Indian class sytem like class, age, subjects and looking for the right place to put the same.
BTW, why are you forcing the awkward Arial font for your user page? Regards. --Rrjanbiah 05:30, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Re: Changing attribution for an edit[edit]

Yes, I am aware of that page. I am currently on the waiting list. Thanks anyway, and thanks too for the compliment. Would you mind giving an opinion of Wikipedia:Request for comment/Drbalaji md, if it doesn't trouble you too much? Thanks again. Johnleemk | Talk 15:17, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

It's basically a place for any user (not just sysops) to bring up possible violations of Wikipedia policy by other users, that are not directly related to any article in particular. The subpage lists three views of the user's conduct — the complainant's (in this case my) view; the defendant's (Drbalaji md) view and views of others who are not directly involved in the dispute. A space is provided at the bottom of each section for users who endorse the various summaries. At this time there are only two summaries; mine, and Raul654's. You may endorse as many summaries as you like. You can also add to a summary, but if you do, you may not edit any other summaries. That's the gist of WP:RFC, from what I understand. Johnleemk | Talk 08:13, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC) P.S.: If you have tried to open discussion with Drbalaji about Coca-Cola either on the article's Talk or his Talk, I think you can certify the basis for the dispute provided you offer evidence of your own that you have tried to reason with him, either by editing my summary and its various listings, or by providing the evidence where you sign to indicate so.
The title says it all — "Requests for comment". It's just to gauge the community's opinion of the user and to see if there really is a case against the user in question, or if it's all in your head. It's just a step on Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. Once this is done with, we might bring it up at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation or Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration. Albert Einstein question[edit]

If it hasn't already been answered, your questions from Talk:Albert Einstein:

Did Einstein speak in English or German or both languages ? How fluent was his English ?

might get a response at the Wikipedia:Reference desk. Alternatively, there's always Google [3]. A quick search there (for "einstein ~speak german english fluent") returned the information that he was fluent in German (his native tongue) and Italian but not English (at least not in 1940, when he was interviewed by the FBI). - dcljr 05:31, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Data Management Wiki Committee[edit]

Thank you for your contribution to one, or more, articles that are now organized under Data management.

Because of your previous intrest, you are recieving an invitation to become a founding member of the Data Management Wiki Committee.

The members, of course, will form and solidify the purpose, rules, officers, etc. but my idea (to kick things off) is to establish a group of us who will take responsiblity to see that the ideas of Data management are promoted and well represented in Wikipedia articles.

If you are willing to join the committee, please go to Category_talk:Data_management and indicate your acceptance of this invitation by placing your three tilde characters in the list.

Thanks for work on Filmfare awards[edit]

Jay, thanks for all the work you did on Filmfare awards ... and other work you're doing on Indian cinema too. Filling out actors, movies, etc. is slow but extremely useful work. Zora 17:05, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)

you're welcome! Hows it that you know so much about Indian cinema ? Jay 10:29, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I don't know that much, compared to my Usenet gurus on rec.arts.movies.local.indian. I just got interested in Indian movies a few years ago, due to Vikram Seth, one of my favorite writers. He talks about Indian movies in A Suitable Boy. Zora 19:27, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

-cide[edit]

Hi Jay. I removed that line from death because "-cide" does not mean "death", it means (roughly) "killing", and the "-cide" words do not provide a classification of types of death. What kind of "-cide" is it when somebody has a heart attack and dies? Most deaths are not "-cides" of any kind. Josh Cherry 13:16, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Bandini[edit]

Hi Jay, almost a week ago, you commented on the article about the movie Bandini I had written. I am sorry I should have replied to you earlier. I think Bandini is an excellent movie so it is not possible not to write anything good about it. That article is one of the first articles I wrote for wikipedia. I am glad you liked the article, but (sorry to contradict you) according to me it is an example of how not to write an article. To me Bandini is more like a review, and it actually is, since it is from a review I wrote for IMDb (it appeared first on Wikipedia). Thank you for pointing that article out to me. I will try to rewrite it soon. --Ankur 04:46, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

RFC pages on VfD[edit]

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:47, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
