Quote characters

It's not grammar, exactly: it's half Wikipedia markup, half the difference between different forms of the language. If you enter ''sample text'' the software renders it as sample text (i.e., in italics). Other than that, US writers and editors use double quotes (", not '') first, then single quotes within those if necessary for quotes within quotes. British writers and editors do the reverse. The convention in philosophy is as you described: single quotes to signify that a term is being used as a word, not for its meaning.

Mahatma

See the 2003-08-31t11:31z Talk:Mohandas Gandhi entry for why I think "Mohandas" is better. If someone were to search for the "Mahatma" version, they'd be redirected - work for the servers; reducing some of the internal redirects lessens the work for the servers. Do you think we should discuss Mahatma vs. Mohandas more before I make more changes? Jay: You put some thoughts on Mahatmas VS Mahandas on the page Talk:Mohandas Gandhi. You said that it wasn't necessary to edit Mahatmas to Mahandas. I agree with that because Mahatmas and Mahandas are virtually the same name! Juicyboy 325 That should be Mohandas ( not Mahandas!) It's

I know but I went there to change the formatting on the "see also" and whilst I was there I thought I might as well change the "it's" as well. I wouldn't have edited it only to do that. It wasn't wrong - just my preference! There are many articles where it's (meaning something belonging to 'it') is wrong though and those I do change. Angela 18:07, Sep 20, 2003 (UTC)

Several edits my same person

When I am the only one editing the page -- its quite unreasonable to argue that I am "clogging" the edit history. LirQ

Although I highly doubt that going through the edit histories is that important or useful -- and I highly doubt that my edits will render this task appreciably more difficult -- if, you actually believe this, then you should advocate that a simple feature be coded (as akin to the latest version of Recent Changes) which merges repeat edits (by a single user) into one lone edit. LirQ

I do use show preview. You should be glad that I take the time to correct errors which I notice. LirQ

Cath-22

I don't understand the comment you made on my talk page-- I thought that Catch-22 was not regarded as successful, precisely because it earned less than MASH. If this is not the case, what was it supposed to say? In any event, the original was gramatically incorrect, which is why I changed it-- I'm a huge pedant when it comes to that type of thing :-) Feel free to change the page to whatever you think makes sense. --bdesham 23:40, 28 Sep 2003 (UTC)

About the Catch-22 thing on witches - apparently it's called "trial by drowning". Catch-22 isn't really a paradox; it's just a no-win situation. Insane or not, you must continue flying missions. IP blocking

I decided to err on the side of caution by not blocking the IP, especially since the user seemed to be changing IP often anyhow. Someone else may choose to block it. There's no really formal rules. -- Pakaran 08:51, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Removing resolved issues on talk

Re: your statement on my talk page. I find that, once a issue has been covered, it is easy and neat to remove the 'posts'. Other contributors leave 'posts' or archive them, I blank them. I don't believe there is any particular policy regarding this. Certainly blanking or editing attacks or unresolved issues would be unacceptable; I do neither. TwoOneTwo 16:42, 7 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Ugh that was a while ago, I guess now I need to start sourcing stuff. In fact maybe someone ought to mention that right on the uploads page, it would probably save a lot of hassle. Wikibot

Wikibot will work on interlanguage links alphabetically starting with a specified word/letter. It is automatic after letter to start on is defined. In addition to standardizing links, wikibot can be instructed to add interlanguage links(even if the foreign language article has different name) missing from english pages. "Female actors"

Bharata

India is named Bharat after King Bharata the son of Dushyanta. BTW Bharata doesn't look like a disambiguation page (there are no links to other articles that disambiguate the 2 Bharatas) so I am removing msg:disambig. You said googling gave enough matches for Jada Bharata. I tried googling and got the matches: http://www.mantra-meditation.com/life-of-jada-bharata.html, http://www.intac.com/~vdayal/ksimay99.htm, http://www.ramakrishnavivekananda.info/vivekananda/volume_4/lectures_and_discourses/the_story_of_jada_bharata.htm and each say Jada Bharata was a reincarnation of King Bharata after whom India was named Bharatavarsa. adding rishabha to the search gave some links saying that King Bharata (not Jada Bharata, who was the son of a priest) was the son of Rishabha. So IMHO India is named after one King Bharata, whose father is diputed, and this particular king is believed to have been reborn as Jada Bharata. -- Paddu 14:53, 18 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi Jay -- I'm sorry if I've caused any confusion. User:Qg added a dozen or so clearly copyvio photos to a number of articles about actresses (see Special:contributions/User:Qg). I've actually never tried to delete photos before, so I think I may have done something wrong, since the pictures haven't disappeared from the database. Explanation

Valuable information which is/can be/should be in the article linked to. List of people should ideally only have name followed by (birth year-death year) and profession as the article itself is the place for all other information related to the person and I think 'x is a son of y' should come very low on priority even in the article itself. It's like this. The reason for inclusion in the list is not/should not be being the son of XYZ. Also it is not flattering to the individual concerned if the top 2 things u can say about that person is son of XYZ, spouse of ABC etc. not that we want to flatter anyone. <smile> In any case, for instance... it would be tempting to introduce Priyanka Gandhi as Priyanka Gandhi is the daughter of Rajiv Gandhi... but that's not good. we don't list sons of all prime ministers. so I made it "Priyanka Gandhi is an Indian politician or something of that sort and then followed it with... daughter of Rajiv Gandhi bit. Nobel header

Hi Jay, I'm sorry that I didn't take the time to notify you of the change I made to Template:NobelPrizes immidiately. What I did was to list it at Wikipedia:MediaWiki custom elements and apply the format, which currently is a standard. The current format used is not necessarily ideal, but I do believe that standardisation has some value. Emeagwali and Hopper

WRT your comment on the Reference Desk, I believe the anonymous poster is speaking to a claim raised earlier that Wikipedia's coverage of computer-related topics is biased against women and "minorities" (by which they presumably mean non-whites). As I indicated by my comment and given his respectable but hardly earth-shattering achievements, I don't count Emeagwali's absence from the Wikipedia to date as evidence of systematic bias, either. --Robert Merkel 08:20, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I don't see the need for this list, we have Category:Prizes that will give all the prizes, so this looks like duplication. If some are not named after people, then maybe create a sub category instead of a list? Grade and Class

Good point you brought about regarding 'class' and 'grade' in Aishwarya Rai. Is there any article where I can find out the school/college-related terminologies in different countries with regards to the terms like grade, class, term, semester, names of vacations, etc. If we don't have this info as yet maybe we need to have it somewhere Jay 12:11, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks Jay for your note. IIRC, I came to know about the term 'grade' from my English professor. The author of my favorite book "Dare to Be Different" also often uses the term "grade". However, I don't know any place where we can find such terminologies. But, I had a longtime idea to tabularize Indian class sytem like class, age, subjects and looking for the right place to put the same.

It's basically a place for any user (not just sysops) to bring up possible violations of Wikipedia policy by other users, that are not directly related to any article in particular. The subpage lists three views of the user's conduct — the complainant's (in this case my) view; the defendant's (Drbalaji md) view and views of others who are not directly involved in the dispute. A space is provided at the bottom of each section for users who endorse the various summaries. At this time there are only two summaries; mine, and Raul654's. You may endorse as many summaries as you like. You can also add to a summary, but if you do, you may not edit any other summaries. That's the gist of WP:RFC, from what I understand. The title says it all — "Requests for comment". It's just to gauge the community's opinion of the user and to see if there really is a case against the user in question, or if it's all in your head. It's just a step on Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. Once this is done with, we might bring it up at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation or Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration. Did Einstein speak in English or German or both languages ? How fluent was his English ?

might get a response at the Wikipedia:Reference desk. Alternatively, there's always Google [3]. Hi Jay. I removed that line from death because "-cide" does not mean "death", it means (roughly) "killing", and the "-cide" words do not provide a classification of types of death. Hi Jay, almost a week ago, you commented on the article about the movie Bandini I had written. I am sorry I should have replied to you earlier. I think Bandini is an excellent movie so it is not possible not to write anything good about it. That article is one of the first articles I wrote for wikipedia. I am glad you liked the article, but (sorry to contradict you) according to me it is an example of how not to write an article. To me Bandini is more like a review, and it actually is, since it is from a review I wrote for IMDb (it appeared first on Wikipedia). Thank you for pointing that article out to me. Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

RFC pages on VfD

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD.
