Recommended Burmese font for my computer

Try downloading the Myanmar3 Unicode font available on BBC Burmese's website (link). It should work, although Myanmar3 sadly doesn't render minority scripts like Shan. I know Padauk on the SIL website can render minority scripts, but there's one major flaw in its rendering of Burmese. Hope that helps. --Hintha (talk) 07:05, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

IPA for သမ္မတ

Hi Hybernator,

I was wondering why you changed the IPA for သမ္မတ in the Burma article to θàɴməda̰, where the "tha" has a nasalized final. I guess the spelling would imply that but most I've heard have never pronounced it as "θàɴ" as in "iron" (သံ). I'm pretty sure that the "tha" is pronounced as an open vowel--I've never heard it pronounced otherwise. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure if the schwa (what I put) is the best approximate, either. What are your thoughts on this? Hello, Hintha. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, I also thought about it for some time. I agree that [θàɴməda̯] isn't an exact reflection of the actual pronunciation but I feel it's closer than [θəməda̯]. At least in my speech, I don't say [θəməda̯]; I say [θàmməda̯]. I didn't put in [θàmməda̯] because the "m" final isn't reflected in the IPA for Burmese page, which I was linking as reference. So I used what I feel is the next closest thing.

I realize the page isn't the final authority. So shall we make it more accurate? The first vowel in "Thanmada" is very close to the first vowel in "Myanmar" (somewhere between the schwa and nasalized "N"), though not exactly the same (again in my speech). If schwa is the closer approximation of မြန်မာ [mjəmà], here, θàɴ is the closer approximation, I feel. If someone can confirm the existence of "m" finals, they could be [θàmməda̯] or [mjəmmà]. Should we discuss it on the IPA for Burmese page? I'm sure Angr will contribute.

Also, on a related note, I notice your use of "n" finals in some of your IPA translations. I don't think we have pure "n" finals as in English. Hybernator (talk) 15:24, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Inaccurate banner words

Could someone fix the Burmese words on the coat of arms of Burma: File:Coat of arms of Burma 1974-2008.png. Currently, they are illegible in Burmese, especially the middle ribbon. It should say "ပြည်ထောင်စု ဆိုရှယ်လစ်သမ္မတ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော်" (Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma). If you need help finding a font, please let me know. Burmese script on Burmese state seal

Hi Hintha, please check the burmese text on the banner of Coat of arms of Burma 2008. I'm confused because I don't understand Burmese script. At first I have downloaded Burmese font ZAWGYI, but after that I have downloaded another Burmese font Myanmar3 Unicode. So I saw that gliph shape of the two fonts are completely different. Sure. If you use a true Unicode font like Myanmar3, it should display properly. But with Zawgyi, you have to convert it specifically for that font. So here it is: ( ျပည္ေထာင္စု သမၼတ ျမန္မာနိုင္ငံေတာ္ ).--Hintha (talk) 07:24, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I checked the English copy of the Constitution, which spells Palaung as "Pa Laung," so maybe we should add something saying it can be spelled either way, given how arbitrary some English spellings for Burmese words are. --Hintha (talk) 03:55, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Talk page etiquette

Check out the talk page style sheets. In places like the global warming pages they follow it to the letter of the law. No nonconstructive, unhelpful comments. Regardless of whether you personally think it's unconstructive or not, it is not other Wikipedians' duty to censor and stifle dissenting opinions, per WP:TPO. Especially given that the comment was made on the "[on the subject's] treatment in the article," not a "rants about the article subject." We're not operating as the Press Scrutiny and Registration Division here. Sure, the "jerk" portion may have been poorly worded, but I think this may have served as an adequate venue for further dialogue.--Hintha(t) 03:05, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

It's not really a question of what I think or not. On most of the talk pages I frequent if someone makes a non-constructive comment it gets removed by anyone... sometimes by administrators. This is normal wiki policy. That comment was just a rant and "jerks" was totally inappropriate. I have been the subject of a removal or two myself in years past so I know what administrators have told me. We are our own police force here in reverting vandalism and nonconstructive and soapbox type posts in discussion areas. It may not be our duty but it is our option since it's not deleted permanently and is always in the archives. Fyunck(click) (talk) 04:34, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Burmese royal titles

Thanks for putting this together! I've been meaning to work on it too. (So many to-do's, so little time.) Anyway, I'll try to help. Here's a good source on the subject, though on Konbaung titles only. [1].

I'm quite certain the titles listed were valid for the Konbaung era only. I don't have the details on other eras but it's likely that the titles in earlier eras had slightly different meanings or at least different rankings. I know for example that "Kodawgyi" wasn't just for sons. Thadominbya's mother (the only daughter of Sawyun) wore the title Soe Min Kodawgyi. Likewise, the title "Minye" was reserved for senior princes in Ava and Toungoo dynasties.

Not sure about Anaudrapa either. I've usually seen it simply as Maha Uparaza Einshe Min. Keep up the great work. Hybernator (talk) 00:32, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm actually unsure of what most of the text says, because it's so small. The only thing I can make out is the text in the blue: "Myoma Kyaung" (Myoma School). I know for sure that Lanzin Lunge is not related to ABSL, but it was a youth party organization that all school students were required to join, if I understand correctly. Burma/Myanmar Division/Region

The changes on the Burma/Myanmar articles from Division to Region that I have seen, for example Sagaing Region, are based on a source in Burmese. Have you seen an English language source? I noticed that you changed the Template:Sagaing Division heading to Sagaing Region. What is the status of the alleged change from Division to Region? New infobox for Buddhist Buildings

Hi there.

I was looking up Mahamuni image, and it struck me that it was using an infobox (IFB) scheme for a Hindu temple. The existing IFB for Buddhist temples is rather insufficient in presenting info - they are more geared for the Chinese interpretation of temples (monastery for us) rather than the 'temples' of Bagan or Mrauk U. I do not want to create unnecessary IFB and other wiki-red tape, but it seems the existing Buddhist temple infobox is insufficient for the temples and pagodas of Myanmar. Oddly, the article on Shwedagon uses the skyscraper template... and states King Okkalapa as the company involved in the construction! This is one of the effects of lacking a specific template.

Many pagodas in other countries also lack such proper templates.

So, if it would be possible, can you please create an IFB for Buddhist Stupas, Pagodas and Temples/Buddhist Buildings? It will not be a uniquely Myanmar template, but it would definitely help a lot of articles on Burmese temples and pagodas, not to mention those from other countries.

Browsing around, I found that there were some infoboxs dedicated to Buddhist temples in Sichuan or Yunan. So, maybe if you want a more Burmese-centric infobox, a "Buddhist --- in Myanmar/Burma" ifb?
