Your GA nomination of I Not Stupid[edit]

The article I Not Stupid you nominated as a good article has passed , see Talk:I Not Stupid for eventual comments about the article. Well done! The Rambling Man 18:20, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work mate. --Michael Billington (talk) 09:22, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hooray! All the hard work has paid off! It's been ages since a Wikipedian praised me, and my talk page misses the Esperanza days. Feel free to leave me barnstars, ballooons, chocolate, bakkwa, praise or all of the above on my talk page. Let the celebrations begin! --J.L.W.S. The Special One 12:22, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The Original Barnstar
There's no "countering systemic bias" barnstar, so this will have to do. Good work! Haemo 03:57, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the barnstar! Your idea of a "countering systemic bias" barnstar is excellent; I've suggested it at WT:CSB. I Not Stupid's my first GA, and I hope it will not be my last. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 13:20, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:I Not Stupid screenshot 1.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:I Not Stupid screenshot 1.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 19:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your EAR[edit]

Hello,

Recently, you posted a request for editor assistance regarding a certain peer review. Please review the responses to determine if the feedback provides a suitable resolution to the issue. Feel free to reply on my talk page regarding this matter; better yet, leave a note over at the request page. Thank you. --Aarktica 12:39, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've read and replied there - it appears to be resolved. Thanks for notifying me! --J.L.W.S. The Special One 13:57, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My non-free image uploads[edit]

From 1 September 2006 to 23 November 2006, I rewrote AdventureQuest. As part of my rewrite, I uploaded four screenshots and added them to the article. However, due to anonymous vandalism, and admins' unwillingness to stop it, I gave up on the article.

The screenshots I uploaded appear to have been replaced. If the new screenshots are better than the ones I uploaded, let the ones I uploaded be deleted. Conversely, if the new screenshots are worse than the ones I uploaded, kindly revert the replacement of the screenshots I uploaded.

Either way, since I no longer maintain the article, and I find Wikipedia's non-free content criteria overly restrictive, I don't care.

Done. --Michael Billington (talk) 13:42, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you update me with the status of attending to the comments I made on the GA? I need to either pass or fail it pretty soon (don't worry, either way isn't final!), and I was giving you a bit of extra time for a copyedit. Drop me a note on my talk page to let me know what's going on. All the best. The Rambling Man 16:56, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good work so far, I added a few more comments, extended the hold period once more. Let me konw when these are attended to and I'll pass the article. The Rambling Man 10:57, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Updated DYK query On August 2, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Megan Zheng, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Well done. Lots of SG stuff on WP these days. Very hard wroking these Singaporeans :). Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:18, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliments! With three DYKs under my belt, I can start planning my fourth (which I may write during the September holidays). I have an interest in local football, and may consider writing a DYK article (or two) pertaining to football in Singapore, as preparation for writing a football-related GA. By the way, you spelt "working" incorrectly. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 11:28, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Aqlogin.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Aqlogin.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Freedomeagle 03:30, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Accusations of being a sockpupper[edit]

I would appreciate it if you would stop with the constant accusations of myself being a sockpuppet of Plaguedbyhordes. You have been told by several people to file a checkuser report and you have refused to do so, and at the same time continued to make accusations against me. And do not at any stage say that you will leave this issue alone so long as I don't get into any disputes with Singapore editors, please note, that you, nor anyone else, owns any article and that all editors have the right to edit any and all articles so long as they abide by the principles and policies of WP. Ask for the checkuser, and stop using excuses for not doing so. --Russavia 16:16, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possible co-nomination of Haemo for RfA[edit]

I was discussing with Haemo the possibility of nominating him for RfA and he had mentioned that both you and Shalom had previously been interested and that he would likely accept the nomination.[1] Haemo is a great editor and the project would benefit greatly from him using the administrative tools. Would you be interested in co-nominating him? Pablo Talk | Contributions 01:44, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Haemo is a great copy-editor and friend of mine, and I would be happy to co-nominate him. However, in my discussion with Haemo, I suggested he write a couple of GAs before running for adminship. Many admin tasks, such as closing AFDs or intervening in content disputes, require great familiarity with Wikipedia's content policies, which can only be gained through article writing. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 03:13, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - up for a quick translation?[edit]

Hello! You mentioned on IRC that you would be willing to do Chinese translations? I was wondering if you could look over a template I'm trying to create for the Chinese editors that keep getting blocked. Thanks! Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:05, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am currently preparing for my O Level Oral examinations, which take place a few months before the written papers. Once they are over, I would be happy to translate the template into Chinese. I am a Singaporean Chinese, not a native Chinese, so I may make several minor errors when translating the template (although the native Chinese editors should still understand it, and I don't mind them laughing at my "poor" command of Mandarin).
Remember, merely translating the template will not solve the problems. Chinese being unable to contribute due to our policy against open proxies will remain a problem. Wikipedia's horrendous coverage of the Sinosphere will remain a problem. We should raise awareness of the problems, and try to solve them.

Image:I_Not_Stupid_Too_screenshot_2.jpg[edit]

I have tagged Image:I_Not_Stupid_Too_screenshot_2.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Thank you. CO 00:17, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"A movie screenshot, used on article of said movie, is fair-use. The screenshot is for informational purposes and does not harm the movie makers commercially." Isn't this a fair-use rationale? If the fair-use rationale is inadequate, please teach me how to provide an adequate fair-use rationale, and I will do so after my last exam on 12 November. However, as images are not required for GA status, if the anti-fair use brigade want to delete this image, they can go ahead. I don't care (and neither would any Singaporean). --J.L.W.S. Southeast Asian cinema task force[edit]

Could you please take a moment to add your name to the list of Interested Wikipedians for the proposed Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Southeast Asian cinema task force?

I think that having the task force will provide support to editors working on articles about the region's cinemas. It will also serve as a valuable assessment tool that could encourage the improvement and expansion of those articles, and will help broaden visibility for those articles.

A proposed task force page has also been started here. — WiseKwai 10:58, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your posting about a task force for Southeast Asian cinema and looked at the article "I Not Stupid". I am an advanced English teacher in central Mexico who also runs the language lab here. I was wondering if you could recommend to me Asian movies originally done in English on DVD that I should get for my students that range from 14 to 22 years of age. Thelmadatter: I'm afraid that all the Singaporean movies I watch are all in a mixture Mandarin, Chinese dialects and Singlish.

Sorry for not answering in IRC. I answered a couple minutes after you left, before realizing that you had. East Carolina University and Westfield High School (Fairfax County, Virginia) are the GAs. LaraLove 16:00, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I reviewed them. I've only written a couple of articles, and I really need to go back and fix one of them up. LaraLove 16:21, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Duly noted. Have fun fixing those articles. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 16:25, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Barnstar of National Merit
For driving the entire group of WP:SG! members up to the ceiling with ceaseless calls for contributions to create a better collection of Singapore-related articles...a long-deserved Barnstar of National Merit for your efforts! Huaiwei 03:57, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much, Huaiwei! After three weeks of O Levels, that's just what I needed. Knowing that my cheerleading efforts are appreciated will encourage me to give you guys more stress. Rest assured that I will pull my weight as well. With plenty of free time during the holidays, I intend to write another Singapore-related GA. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 04:10, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes your efforts are noticed indeed and admittedly, I sometimes feel sorry because the response is often less than forthcoming, my own included. I only wished I still have the time to do the many things I wished to do here. I shared your zeal when I was still in school and especially in the period immediately after graduation when I had tonnes of free time in my hands, with over 1,000 edits clocked each month (my record was 1,848 edits in March 2005, less than two months away from my final examination experience in my life). Many wonderful things were done during that period, including establishing Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board which began life on 10 March 2005. Our community will certainly look forward to wonderful contributions from yourself as well once you hit your lull period! Take care, and all the best in your examinations!--Huaiwei 04:23, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Football-related Singapore articles[edit]

Hi, J.L.W.S. Thought I should continue this conversation on your talk page as it was getting a bit off-topic. Hope your exams went well. How are your efforts to improve coverage of the S-League on Wikipedia coming along? — Cheers, JackLee talk 03:00, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My exams went quite well. I have started working on Tampines Rovers FC. Should that achieve GA status, my next goal will be to write a GA on a Singaporean international footballer (either Mohd Noh Alam Shah or the legendary Fandi Ahmad). --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 03:42, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great to hear that. — Cheers, JackLee talk 17:17, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Fix-It Barnstar
For fixing the "missing FAR category" at the League of Copy-editors Requests page. Unimaginative Username (talk) 02:43, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! -- it was causing problems for several users and puzzling the copy-editors. Unimaginative Username (talk) 02:43, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! I'm glad to have helped solve this problem. You could help me in the following ways:
  • Read this post I made on the project's talk page.
  • Get someone to copy-edit Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), or do it yourself. Most of the content issues are minor and have been addressed. The article only needs a copy-edit (which the League should do) and more references (but references are not prose, and I believe Mailer diablo will add enough references) to retain its FA status.
--J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 03:30, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I read the post. I'm afraid I don't meet the criteria. However, if you have questions on subtleties of English that are not well-explained by the Help desk or other sources, I would certainly be glad to try to help, as I did here, for example. I cannot guarantee to answer within any time frame, as the Real World makes its own demands. Thanks again for finding the glitch in the Requests FAR base. Cheers, Unimaginative Username (talk) 05:02, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's OK if you don't meet the criteria. (Which parts do you not meet? I am less stringent with 2 and 4.) Other members of the League might; ask them to read that post. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 13:05, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also unable to assist in the manner you desire, although I do meet all of your criteria. I'm afraid real life is too unpredictable for me to be able to guarrantee to be available to help at any particular time. However, if you have any questions my talk page is always open and not so busy as to make it impossible for me to get back to you. Your english, I should mention, is generally extremely good. Oh no! At 16, I'm already suffering from memory loss; I don't recall what you're thanking me for. Could you refresh my memory? My most sincere apologies for forgetting. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 02:38, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit summary remark: "Year 2007 - Jacklee deserves a barnstar for his excellent contributions to our project; Zubir Said is his 4th Singapore-related GA." — Cheers, JackLee talk 04:39, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you do deserve a barnstar. If you and Aldwinteo continue writing GAs at this rate, our project should have 20 GAs by January. Anyway, you're welcome. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 10:00, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Given the amount of work I have I probably shouldn't... — Cheers, JackLee talk 23:30, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Work comes first, writing GAs second. Write at a slower pace if you must. Do not get fired or let your work be affected by your contributing to Wikipedia. Perhaps you could help me hone my GA-writing skills? --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 14:07, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks for the reminder! Sure, what do you want to know about writing GAs? — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:26, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain the process by which you write GAs? Is it similar to the following?:
  • Research for information: accumulate a repository of reliable references, comb them for relevant information and plan how to structure the article and organise the information.
  • Write the article: Convert the information to prose, organised into paragraphs and sections, and add references, categories and infoboxes.
  • Polish the article: fix any stylistic problems, request a copyedit, submit a peer review, address any concerns raised and submit a GA nomination once the article is ready.
Other questions include:
  • How do you find reliable references?
  • How do you ensure your prose is up to standard?
Of course, miscellaneous tips are always welcome.
--J.L.W.S. The Special One 03:19, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I haven't been able to get back to you on this. Real life takes priority! I thought I'd write a short guide to creating good articles as a sub-page of my user page. Will let you know when I've done it. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:15, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

R & GW[edit]

"Oppose Raul654 has been rather inactive recently; FAC needs him more. Moreover, feedback from others (and his conduct on global warming-related articles)"

What's that about global warming articles? He participated in a GW Arbcom kangaroo court. He's also involved with the GW articles? -- SEWilco (talk) 06:09, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that Raul654 has been involved in several content disputes on global warming-related articles and has inappropriately used his tools to intervene in said content disputes. In addition, several oppose voters provided diffs showing incivility by Raul654. Should incivil admins who use their tools to intervene in content disputes be appointed to ArbCom? If they are, the process is broken. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 03:07, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Award Center[edit]

I selected those articles because I created all of them, with the exception of Ron Paul and I Not Stupid. I selected I Not Stupid because I saw a post of yours somewhere (possibly in Talk:Barnstar, but I'm not sure) and was curious enough to click the link to I Not Stupid. In its current state, it would not be too difficult to raise to FA. Besides this, I found the article to be fascinating (I hope you're proud :-P) and, if featured, I think it will make great front-page material, as many Westerners like myself aren't usually familiar with such issues (streaming has been toned down a lot in the USA). As for assignments, just list stuff. Don't even have to ask the Transhumanist (even though it's his subpage). I took the work used by others and copied it, with some minor changes. Be Bold --Sharkface217 04:36, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You probably meant my post suggesting a Countering Systemic Bias barnstar. Yes, I am pround of I Not Stupid and agree that it would make great front-page material. However, I am rather pessimistic about its chances of attaining FA status. Thanks for your simple "instructions" for adding an assignment; I intend to add several "write a Singapore-related GA" assignments. --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 16:17, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FAC talk: Improving FAC[edit]

You responded in a topic started by this paragraph:

I wanted to know what and how you felt about those suggestions. I would greatly appreciate if you responded to these in the FAC talk page.

Thankyou,
Sincerely,
Kiyarrllston
[message posted 17:45, 2 January 2008 (UTC)][reply]

My only input in that discussion was a response to your comment that the anonymous user "accus[ed] [Coloane] of racism". The accusations of racism were not unjustified; in a discussion on Talk:2007 Southeast Asian Games, Coloane called Singaporeans "semi-handicapped". I do not have any comments about the above "suggestions for improving FAC". As I contribute to Singapore-related articles, which have almost no chance of ever achieving FA status, I have no intention to take them to the endless nitpicking and incivility that is FAC. --J.L.W.S.
