Adminship

Hey Hersfold. I have been complaining about how we don't have enough admins, and in a (sadly, brief) moment of self-reflection, I have decided instead of complaining, I should do something about it. So, I have picked out a few likely candidates who I think would sail through RFA, and am going to ask them all the same question - would you like me to nominate you for adminship?

I know you withdrew your first RFA because of opposes based around a "lack of experience", despite my support(!) but I think by now you would pass, and pass easily. Let me know, okay? If you want any advice or whatever beforehand, then that's fine too. Let me know. Neil  10:39, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

That's kind of funny... in my second RfA just a month and a half ago, you opposed, stating that you thought "another few months of familiarisation would be beneficial." :-P
The thing is, I'm not entirely certain. User:RyanLupin just asked me on the 9th if I'd considered running for adminship, and I told him then (less than three weeks ago) that I didn't think it had been long enough since my last one. However, seeing as how you were one of the opposition last time and feel now that I'd pass easily, I'm a little more willing to give it a shot.
If you do wish to nominate me, I will accept it. If you had in fact forgotten RfA #2 and wish to wait a bit longer, I will understand. And if you have any advice at all, whether you nominate or not, I would be more than happy to receive it. Thank you for your kind words, and please let me know once you make a decision. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
I hadn't forgotten, I just thought it was longer ago than that! Good grief. The opposes in the last RFA were chiefly due to a few misjudgements at AFDs, especially Bertrand Russell - have you been continuing to participate in xFD? Neil  20:34, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, although I've spread more into CfD and done a bit less in AfD. For convenience, here's some of the recent discussions I've been involved with: CfD Speedy Rename (completed about 15-20 renames); AfD's: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (my nom); the recent mess with the scout camps takes 6, 7, 8, an ANI post and a SSP case; 9, and 10 (my nom). CFD's include 1 2 3 4. I've also closed a few obvious snowballs here and there, which may or may not be included in the above list, I'm really not sure.
And I do know by now that Mr. Russell is far more than "apparently notable". He's been haunting me, I think, I keep coming across his name in articles all over the place. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:35, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
All looks good to me. You know what would swing it? Mr. Russell's article used to be a Good Article, but was removed, mainly due to needing inline citations. I bet if you could get it back to GA as some kind of penance for your nefarious sin, you'd have the ultimate ammunition for your RFA. Neil  23:26, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
You blackmailer. :-P Fine, I'll work on it. My first project was to help find references for articles, so I should be able to get some of them done. Hersfold (t/a/c) 00:04, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
How's it going, any luck? Neil  09:28, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it's a bit of work because most of what's written about him seems to be written, so isn't as easily accessible. With midterms having just finished up, I should be able to get back to working on it some more. Hersfold (t/a/c) 00:45, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

DC meetup #3

Interested in meeting-up with a bunch of your wiki-friends? Please take a quick look at Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 3 and give your input about the next meetup. Thank you.

Try nl.wikipedia

You have removed a notenglish CSD tah from the article Frank Leeflang, citing as a reason that it is not found in the German edition of Wikipedia. But the language was not German. It was Dutch. The article was about a Surinamese politician. --Blanchardb 22:30, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

My mistake. Sorry, and thanks for correcting that. P.S. - I've removed the entry on pages needing translation. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:32, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Banned?

For being a sockpuppet of myself? I don't understand. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Toweepformenot (talkcontribs) 01:55, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, apparently the script I use is broken. I've fixed the tag, but if you're able to contest the evidence I've provided on that page, I can remove the case. I will admit that the situation is somewhat coincidental, but I wanted an admin to check it out. As I said, I'm more than willing to remove all of this if you can give an explanation for things. :-) Thanks for contacting me. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:00, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

From what I can tell, because I reverted someone's vandalism to my edits, I am suspected of being him. I changed "U.S." to "U.S.A." in J. Howard Marshall (As it is in many articles), and he changed them back, along with adding some bogus picture. So I reverted his edits. Toweepformenot 02:04, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Ok. Is there any particular reason you chose that name? The style of your name bears some similarity to the one used by the vandal. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:05, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
Sockpuppet was blocked from puppeteer User:AndreLapalme. You can clear his name. :) --əˈnongahy ♫Look What I've Done!♫ 02:12, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

It's from one of my favorite songs-- "The Lone Pilgrim". What similarity does name bear to his? This all seems really ridiculous. Toweepformenot 02:08, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

I wholeheartedly apologize for this mess then, and will clear your name of all this nonsense. Welcome to Wikipedia, and I hope this hasn't put you off at all from editing. If it has, please accept my sincere invitation to continue editing. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:15, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
It's fine. I'm just glad we got it resolved. I've done some minor editing for a while now anonymously, and I just thought it would be a good idea to get a user name. This hasn't hindered me as an editor at all. I know that with the copious amount of vandalism attempts on here it's necessary to take precautions to make sure that the correct information is presented. Toweepformenot 02:29, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Discussion restarted November 10

Thought I would drop you a line, I'm afraid that your original instincts about User:Toweepformenot are more then likely correct due to these bad faith edits [1][2][3][4][5] ,I admire your good faith assumptions here, with this editors first couple of edits it wasn't very clear if Toweepformenot should be a suspect or not, you may want to re-add this user back to the sock puppetry case that you were working on.▪◦▪≡ЅiREX≡Talk 06:38, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Dang it, there's nothing worse than a clever vandal that knows how to shut up when he's caught. Ok, I'll get to work on it. Thanks. Hersfold (t/a/c) 07:18, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
True, this may be related to User:BradSerious who was an early vandal in the J. Howard Marshall article here, BradSerious would use the same MO as Toweepformenot(also had a strong interest in music), adding a picture he would upload to vandalisn as he did here right before his user account was banned. But I'm not 100% on it.▪◦▪≡ЅiREX≡Talk 08:10, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
I think I may have found another new account, but I can't tell for sure yet, my internet's being funky. Add any you suspect to the sock page, it's up and running. Hersfold (t/a/c) 08:11, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Ok thanks, I'll you know if I find anything else or I'll list any findings on your report if you like. ▪◦▪≡ЅiREX≡Talk 08:20, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Ok. I think I'll go sit on the new user log for a little while. Hersfold (t/a/c) 08:24, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Definitely the same socks/meats, Nexttubeban edit here [6] uses a picture that Toweepformenot uploaded, this one Image:Glenncommunist.PNG and later Toweepformenot makes the very same edit here [7]▪◦▪≡ЅiREX≡Talk 09:37, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Increasing the Heights of Rows within Wiki Tables

Can anyone give me the exact instructions to change (increase) the heights of rows within a Wiki Table? In the Table below, I would like to make all of the rows of equal height -- just as I did with all of the equal column widths. Specifically, I want all of the rows to have the same height (that is, it should fit 3 lines of text from top to bottom) to "match" the row of cells below entitled: ***Most Awards*** (I WANT THIS HEIGHT!). I read the Wikipedia Help section on this (Help:Table) and, lo and behold, it was no help at all. Thank you. (Joseph A. Spadaro 21:10, 4 November 2007 (UTC))

Fixed it. You have to add a style parameter after the |- bit that indicates a new row. Apparently each line of text is about 1.5 em high, so to get three lines high, the code is style="height:4.5em", as you can see in the edit box. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:14, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks so much! I would never have figured that out in a million years! Thanks, I really appreciate it. Take care. (Joseph A. Spadaro 02:37, 5 November 2007 (UTC))

RE: Non-free use rationale

Thanks for the help, now I can rest assured that if I upload anything, I would have to worry that it will be deleted because I didn't put the template on. ;) --Sunny910910 (talk|Contributions) 00:35, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Hersfold, regarding your comments on Talk:Gilberto:

Firstly, thanks for the pointer about the helpme tag, I never realised it was just for talk page help. I must have been confused by the note on Template_talk:Helpme which says "helpme is designed to provide help for new Wikipedians in building the encyclopedia. This excludes userpages and signatures". (Does this mean that the tag can or can't be used on userpages?)

Secondly, I read through Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(disambiguation_pages), and it doesn't seem to have any information about exactly what people I should include on the Gilberto page. The closest thing I found was this: "For people, include their birth and death years (when known), and only enough descriptive information that the reader can distinguish between different people with the same name." This doesn't specify what "people with the same name" actually means. All people with Gilberto anywhere in their name? (If so, this sentence becomes noteworthy: "For longer lists, create a new Title (name), Title (surname) and/or Title (given name) page.") Or should I just include notable people? I'm not really sure either way. Should I maybe ask at the WP help desk?

I think the argument could be made that all this effort into such a infrequently-visited page is a bit of a waste of time, but the reason I'm putting so much effort into getting it right is so that I'll know exactly what to do on other disambiguation pages.

Thanks again for all your help, I really appreciate it. All the best, -GilbertoSilvaFan 14:55, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi again, thanks for the extremely useful pointers. (Maybe they should be added to the MoS page or something...) I'll look up some information on the name Gilberto and see what else I can add to the page. Good luck in the future, and if you ever need a favour, don't hesitate to ask. (Not sure what I could do that you couldn't, but still.) -GilbertoSilvaFan 23:33, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Hi (again!). Just to let you know I made some additions to the disambiguation page Gilberto, on the back of your advice. If you spot anything which you think could be improved, I'd be very grateful if you let me know. Thanks, and all the best. -GilbertoSilvaFan 14:25, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Very good work! I made a minor correction for capitalization, but aside from that, everything looks just fine. Adding the infobox was a great idea as well. Keep up the good work! Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:04, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

It's done... since it's populated by a template, so far everything is there. If you want, I can add a tag to make it put some stuff directly in the main category ... usually thats implemented at assessment time with an NA tag, but currently its too small to make assessment really worthwhile. -- Prove It (talk) 16:19, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I'd forgotten about that. It's up to you, I personally think it should be left up to them to decide how they sort their stuff out for the most part. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:50, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Blackburn Men's Fastball League

Hello, Sources have been added. Can you please review this again. Once the item is launched, fellow BMFL members will be able to edit and add relevant information. Cheers. User:99.241.22.58 18:56, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

If you could provide a link, I'd be happy to take a look, but I'm really not sure what you're talking about. I can't find an article on your league on Wikipedia - if it was deleted, you'd probably be best off contacting the administrator that deleted the page. Non-admins such as myself are not able to view deleted pages. If you're trying to start an article, I'd recommend against having members of the league edit the page - this creates a conflict of interest which may affect the page's neutrality and make establishing notability difficult. Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:48, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

RE:Calm

It was a joke, not actual sarcasm, and it was a section started up by what was most likely a troll anyway. I don't get upset; I get apathetic, especially where trolls are involved. Peace, The Hybrid T/C 23:14, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Even so, it usually helps to avoid encouraging it. Thanks for the reply. Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:16, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome, but I have no intentions of repressing my sense of humor for a troll, especially one who doesn't understand what racism is. Besides, most of the anons who poke around wrestling articles don't understand page histories, so this person will never see it. Also, keep in mind that I was deleting a section specifically to prevent them from receiving any further replies, ie. being fed, so any potential issues my summary may have caused are self-correcting. I think ahead before I crack a joke to make sure nothing bad happens. Cheers, The Hybrid T/C 23:22, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Ahl

Thanks for the offer to do the heavy lifting at "Pages that link to Jonas Nicolaus Ahl". As it turns out, only the first three belong to him.

ALL the rest should go to Ernst Ahl (who will, now, come the top of the most-wanted biographies!). Tim Ross 17:40, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I'll just use that list then. I'll let you know when it's done. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Great job, Hersfold. All is well now. (Although I note that Ernst Ahl already had a stub biography, so I didn't get to see him rocket to the top of the "most wanted" list!) Tim Ross 21:35, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Fair Use Image Violation

Hey, thanks for letting me know about TAR image usage violation. I'm really new to this so I had no idea how the image rules apply, I thought if they were up on a Wikipedia article then they were fair use for everyone. Where exactly can I look to find out more of the rules on image use? Thanks!

Reflexsilver86 04:49, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Most images you can find here are going to be freely available, however you have to check each image page to make sure. If it has a copyright tag (usually indicated by the big red (c) logo and the words "Fair use"), then it can't be used anywhere except the article namespace. The page at WP:NFC can give you the information you're looking for. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:40, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Re: RFA

Hey, Hersfold. Do you know what an RFA is? Thanks,--S.C.Ruffeyfan (talk) 16:31, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

P.S. I'm the guy who asked on how to get into a WikiProject.

Hello there, I do indeed. "RFA" is short for Requests for Adminship and is the process through which established editors can request, or be nominated, to be considered for a position as an administrator. Once a request has been filed, other editors review the nominee's contributions and history of involvement on the encyclopedia and hold a vote to determine the outcome of the request. As with everything on Wikipedia, it's not actually a vote, but a way of judging the community's consensus about the qualifications of the nominee. Because of that, nominees generally need at least 70% of the vote in order for their RfA to be successful and they be granted admin powers (also known as being "given the mop"). However, some RfA's have been accepted with lower support ratios, and some have been declined for higher ones. The best way to find out for yourself, I think would be to go to the nominations page at WP:RFA and participate in some of the discussions. It's often good for these discussions to have comments from people who don't really know the candidate, as that shows a wider range of opinions from around the community.
By the way, here's a quick hint - usually when you see an editor refer to something with a acronym like RFA, COI, or POINT, they're actually referring to a specific process or policy by its shortcut, a redirect that allows us to make links to those policies faster without having to type out the whole name - which in the case of pages such as Wikipedia:No climbing the Reichstag dressed as Spider-Man, can be a great time-saver. To find a page using these shortcuts, just add WP: in front of the acronym and search for it. For example, that gives you WP:RFA (requests for adminship), WP:COI (conflict of interest), and WP:POINT (Don't disrupt Wikipedia to make a point - the actual policy that WP:REICHSTAG parodies).
Let me know if you have any more questions, I'm always happy to help out. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:12, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Eric Yenz Pang

The page created for Eric Yenz Pang in no way falls within the category of speedy deletion. Eric is a very prominent figure in Australian politics, and, as President/Convenor of the NLC (http://www.nlc.edu.au/), is an important voice for international students in Australia, as well as being a major powerbroker in the National Union of Students, and has been often quoted and cited in the national media. Other participants in the National Union of Students have consistently been voted by Wiki editors to be worthy of having a page, for instance Mathew Chuk and Rose Jackson. Whilst it may be arguable that a delete tag was worthy, it in no way falls under the category of speedy delete. StuPol (talk) 10:27, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

My apologies for marking him as non-notable then, however the administrator who deleted the page also noted that the article "was very short and cited no sources," which is probably why I didn't consider him notable. Wikipedia gets many new articles every day about non-notable people, and it's often very hard for us to tell which subjects are notable when little information is provided and no sources are given to back up the information. For that reason, we also have a speedy deletion criteria for articles with very little content and no context whatsoever. As the admin said, you are more than welcome to repost the article if you can provide a little more information and some reliable sources to back up the information. You may also want to review the speedy deletion criteria at WP:CSD. Thanks. Hersfold (t/a/c) 16:57, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I strongly resent your tagging St V for speedy deletion. The page has extensive analogues in two other languages, which admittedly were not there at the time. While I did half expect the page to be tagged, please be more careful in your tagging, as you tagged it db-nonsense, which it was not, giving the rationale "appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent.", which it certainly was not. Again, please do not tag things for speedy deletion giving rationale which are in no way appropriate. -Oreo Priest 18:46, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Please see a reply and rationale for the tagging on your talk page. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Much better. I've added a reference, and hope to flesh out the article a little more by tomorrow. A minor suggestion, not similar to the one above: even if not proficient in the other languages, it helps to check the interwiki links to see if other WPs have extensive articles which have survived, or if it is invented and patent nonsense. I'll protest the proposal for deletion of course, but I'm glad this is more or less straightened out. -Oreo Priest 19:28, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
I feel like it's fairly good for now. As far as I can tell, there's no candidates for deletion page where I need to plead my case (if there is, please let me know about it), so my removal of the template you added I believe puts the matter to rest. That is, as I hope, if the current state of the article proves its notability to your taste. -Oreo Priest 20:14, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

You might want to read my addition to your response on the help desk... - Mgm|(talk) 20:51, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Suite Life on Deck

Hi. I know that it may not be confirmed, but go to the page it says and scroll down. It will say "Danny Kallis, Suite Life on Deck". Then talk to me. I just did not know it was wrong. I didn't mean to do anything bad.

I'm sure you didn't, but to avoid unnecessary clutter on the project, we have to filter out articles about subjects that are non-notable or whose articles don't contain enough information to provide more than a basic understanding of the subject. Once the series gets off the ground, you might be able to write an article on it, but since Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, we'd much rather wait until we have solid information than speculation of something that may or may not occur. You may also want to look at the criteria for speedy deletion for more information. Thanks for contacting me about this, and happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:22, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Hey there. Noticed your comment at User talk:Oberobic. I'm not sure about what guidelines say in that case. The Pakistan University of Management and Technology appears to be older than the other, does that weigh into which UMT should have the unqualified article title? None of them seem to be particularly well-covered, or maybe I have to take another round at googling. |dorftrottel |talk 17:59, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

There appear to be several institutions with that name.[8] Maybe we should go straight to establishing a disambig page at University of Management and Technology and qualify all individual institution articles? |dorftrottel |talk 18:01, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
(posted before edit conflict) From what he said, the American one is a few years older. I don't really know, I was just going on what he said. I'll look into it; it may turn out that the best course would be to make the actual title a disamb page and have both actual articles with unqualified titles.
You know, for a word that means "to make things less confusing", it sure is a pain in the arse.
(after EC) Guess that makes it easier then. Disamb page it is. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:03, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I went ahead with it: University of Management and Technology, University of Management and Technology (Pakistan). |dorftrottel |talk 18:12, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
