Oh, I'm always sucking up to the folks on Wikipedia who are willing and able to do the tedious work that makes my contributions look great. One of my first articles, after writing it, I came back to find this beautiful professional encyclopedia-looking article--just a few changes, rather minor, and my work goes from purely amateur, to something anybody would be happy to encounter and use on Wikipedia. Eventually, I swear, I am going to find a way to con the lot of you into proofreading my work papers, too.
Serious, the spit-shining is, imo, one of the least valued yet most important tasks on Wikipedia, and will eventually be what makes or breaks its lofty goals. I always try to thank folks who are willing to do this, so I can do more research. KP Botany 20:22, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Ceramics Stubs

Hi HeartofaDog, I highly appreciate your asking for help to the original "ceramics stub" author, what an honor...! On the Ceramics the stub the parent category is decorative arts not regulated just to FINE ART. Ceramics and pottery can be both ornamental and functional. I believe factories can produce decorative art, Wedgwood comes to mind, Pottery as a subset of Ceramics can be factory made. Sure, I could use a helping hand, if you know how to fix the article "ceramics (art)" or create a broader article...and want to do it! I did not plan to do it myself, I am more of a painter but sorted all the art stubs last fall into basic categories and check them once in a while. Keynes family

You are disputing that the surname variants are valid. I have researched the "de Keynes" family for more than a year and can trace its roots back to "William de Cahaignes" c1035, sometimes referred to as "Cheney" or "Caineto" with descendents often referred to as Chesney,Caineto or similar. I have also researched the Dakin/Dickin/Deakin/Dicken(s) and most, if not all, descend from their ancestors in Ashbourne or Chelmorton, Derbyshire or Norfolk beforehand.

In genealogy, there is often a lot of conjecture but I have found connections linking my beliefs through many associated families which have remained connected through the generations. There have certainly been numerous changes in surname from the recent Dakin/Dickin/Dickens to the much older change from "de cahaignes" to "de keynes" and "Cheney"/"Chesney" and other varients.

There may well be individuals with names that are the same as, but not necessarily descended from, the original ancestor.

My source for many of the variants is "History & gazetteer of Derbyshire" (1833) which I have images of but is not in my opinion suitable for inclusion as a "picture" (image) in wikipedia. I would welcome a suggestion on how I might present this as some evidence for quite a few of the name variants.ken 19:07, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I see that you added the remaining notable members of the Keynes family to Keynes (disambiguation). I hade originally removed them shortly after I created the page per WP:DAB which states in the relevant part

Lists of articles of which the disambiguated term forms only a part of the article title don't belong here. Disambiguation pages are not search indices. Do not add links that merely contain part of the page title (where there is no significant risk of confusion).

I was trying to get your opinion and help since this is a collaborative encyclopedia. I also wanted to ask your opinion before simply reverting you to avoid a so-called "revert war" where we each insist on our prefered version. As for Keynes family, I am not sure what you are blaming me for. I just created a family tree of a modern notable family. As for the disambiguation page, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#Examples of individual entries that should not be created has this (bolding mine):
"People who happen to have the same surname or given name should not be mixed in with the other links unless they are very frequently referred to simply by the single name (e.g., Elvis, Shakespeare). For short lists of such people, new sections of People with the surname Title and People with the given name Title can be added below the main disambiguation list. For longer lists, create a new Title (name), Title (surname) and/or Title (given name) page, or a List of people named Title."
This is what is already on the disambiguation page, so I see no need to change it.
As for the rest, you already have my opinion and help, should you need it, but there is really no reason why you should not simply go ahead and make any sensible edits that seem good to you. I have no great personal interest in this article or subject and have never engaged in revert warring - although admittedly you have no way of knowing that.
I am not blaming you for anything and am sorry if I am coming across as snappy - I am sure your intentions are nothing but good. I just don't like having rules quoted at me on minor issues.HeartofaDog 20:34, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

I hope you didn’t take offence at my flippant comment; it was intended to be nothing other than lighthearted. Yes you correct that I have no user page. This is for two reasons: (1) I’n new so am still learning about Wikipedia’s policies and procedures, and (2) I have thought for some time about joining Wikipedia as I have received mixed comment from a number of people in the real world. Negative views have included that it petty arguments can easily start, and these can sometimes degenerate into quite vicious arguments. Referrence in Freedom Monument article

What do you mean - "this is gibberish" ? Should I name author and publisher in Latvian (I couldn't find any wikipedia policy on naming foreign sorces and names of state offices are usually translated) were it sounds as idiotic as in english ? -- Xil/talk 09:31, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

It's OK, no need to apologise, it's not that I felt offended - the sentence I quoted in the article could be concidered as gibberish by some, and the wording in the referrence also is confusing. I believe that soviet sorces are the best sorces to use when writing about soviet propoganda, however these book sorces don't have ISBN, which, as I read, is required for book sorces. Also as I said I'm not sure if referrences need to be translated - in printed books they're usually in orginal language, however I think it helps people who don't understand the language to understand what are the sorces, that is why I translated it to english - the orginal encyclopedia is in Latvian. As for the referrence - the publisher was establishment of soviet government (Chief editorial office of encyclopedias), the authors are people who were working for this establishment and the title page of the book referrs to "Chief editorial office of encyclopedias" both in name of the author and in name of the publisher, so I included both, it would be same in Latvian - slightly idiotic. I think the author could be changed to "collective of authors" ---- Xil/talk 14:12, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Latvia template

Thank you for catching the egregious error. I copied the template from that of a US state for the purposes of getting the various assessment criteria. I changed the name, but forgot the phrasing. Yes, I am an American citizen, and our foreign policy of late has been rather more imperialistic than I necessarily like, but I was in no way implying that we were that actively trying to take over the rest of the planet. Question about sources

When I put my sources for Dean Schonfeld can they just be external links at the bottom of the page? Do they have to be subscripts only if they are exact quotations? faculty bios

Glad people are doing them--we need more--but I suggest you add a little more content initially to articles like Wade-Grey--there are people here who are very likely to propose them for deletion--a list of publications seems to help. Just my suggestion.DGG 18:58, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

I added a tag {{Underconstruction}}. It should be good for at least a day or two. In general, yes, it does help to write them off line. Problem is that of the short articles added to WP, 95% need to be rapidly deleted. Admins are supposed to check the user contributions to see if it's an established ed., but often they go too fast. I try to keep an eye out for anything that sounds like an academic, but they can disappear too fast. I see that you don't want to get involved with the internal operations here--a wise move, because it can be addicting--but I've already fallen into that trap, so if you ever need help with that kind of thing, just ask me.
additional point--the article on Naomi Mitchison does not discuss her private life, so you should add the information there. DGG 23:17, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

While it's on prod, anyone can take it off; I saw it there, it looked interesting, though excessively detailed. I took the prod off, intending to edit to remove detail. When I checked the details, I saw that 3 of the 4 sections corresponded to individual bios. I realised there was no reason to keep the article just for the 4th, so I expanded that into an article. I then put the prod back on to delete the now unnecessary article., but if people want to discuss it, AfD is the place, so go right ahead. Actually, when you copy off a public domain source, you still must attribute the copy. In the case of the Catholic encyclopedia, there is a tag for that very purpose: {{Catholic}}. If you forget or neglect the tag, the page will still look like a copyvio (especially to a bot).
