Tabs

James, WiR has outgrown the current mainpage layout. I wonder if Project X can support our request (from when you and I last skyped) to change it from the current view to having tabs across the top? I don't recall if you said that Project X can switch us to tabs or not. If it can't, would I create a nightmare by trying it myself? I've never created tabs but I am hopeful that I can figure it out. Rosiestep, I hope to figure out a working solution soon. The trick is to find a way to present all of the link options without overloading it and making it too complex. Wednesday April 13, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon NYC and Mini-Video Opportunity

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

Special this month, a Mini-Video opportunity for individuals to share their Wikipedia experiences (during pre-meeting, 6-7pm, and in side-office during regular meetup). A videographer will be present to record 1-3 minute Mini-Videos of folks informally speaking, sharing anything about their Wikipedia-related projects, whether an edit-a-thon they joined, an article they edited, or a class project they were a part of, etc.

We will also follow up on plans for recent (Art+Feminism!) and upcoming edit-a-thons, and other outreach activities.

We welcome the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from all educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

We will also place our chapter's votes for the global Wikimedia Foundation board.

After the main meeting, pizza/chicken/vegetables and refreshments and video games in the gallery!

Transclude article requests anywhere on Wikipedia

In the last issue of the WikiProject X Newsletter, I discussed the upcoming Wikipedia Requests system: a central database for outstanding work on Wikipedia. I am pleased to announce Wikipedia Requests is live! Its purpose is to supplement automatically generated lists, such as those from SuggestBot, Reports bot, or Wikidata. It is currently being demonstrated on WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health (which I work on as part of my NIOSH duties) and WikiProject Women scientists.

Adding a request is as simple as filling out a form. Just go to the Add form to add your request. Adding sources will help ensure that your request is fulfilled more quickly. And when a request is fulfilled, simply click "mark as complete" and it will be removed from all the lists it's on. All at the click of a button! (If anyone is concerned, all actions are logged.)

With this new service is a template to transclude these requests: {{Wikipedia Requests}}. It's simple to use: add the template to a page, specifying article=, category=, or wikiproject=, and the list will be transcluded. For example, for requests having to do with all living people, just do {{Wikipedia Requests|category=Living people}}. Use these lists on WikiProjects but also for edit-a-thons where you want a convenient list of things to do on hand. Give it a shot!

Help us build our list!

The value of Wikipedia Requests comes from being a centralized database. The long work to migrating individual lists into this combined list is slowly underway. As of writing, we have 883 open tasks logged in Wikipedia Requests. We need your help building this list.

If you know of a list of missing articles, or of outstanding tasks for existing articles, that you would like to migrate to this new system, head on over to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Requests#Transition project and help out. Doing this will help put your list in front of more eyes—more than just your own WikiProject.

An open database means new tools

WikiProject X maintains a database that associates article talk pages (and draft talk pages) with WikiProjects. This database powers many of the reports that Reports bot generates. However, until very recently, this database was not made available to others who might find its data useful. It's only common sense to open up the database and let others build tools with it.

And indeed: Citation Hunt, the game to add citations to Wikipedia, now lets you filter by WikiProject, using the data from our database.

Are you a tool developer interested in using this? Here are some details: the database resides on Tool Labs with the name s52475__wpx_p. The table that associates WikiProjects with articles and drafts is called projectindex. Pages are stored by talk page title but in the future this should change. Have fun!

On the horizon
  • The work on the CollaborationKit extension continues. The extension will initially focus on reducing template and Lua bloat on WikiProjects (especially our WPX UI demonstration projects), and will from there create custom interfaces for creating and maintaining WikiProjects.
  • The WikiCite meeting will be in Berlin in May. The goal of the meeting is to figure out how to build a bibliographic database for use on the Wikimedia projects. This fits in quite nicely with WikiProject X's work: we want to make it easier for people to find things to work on, and with a powerful, open bibliographic database, we can build recommendations for sources. This feature was requested by the Wikipedia Library back in September, and this meeting is a major next step. We look forward to seeing what comes out of this meeting.

I think the problem I'm having is that Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory and Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory are different pages, and I keep going to the old one. IMO the old one needs a more prominent link to the new one. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:39, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
WhatamIdoing, my long term plan is to replace the Council directory altogether with the new one. I have held off on proposing it for now because there is still a lot more work that needs to be done and I haven't had the time to prioritize it. Associated Phabricator task. More seriously, if WP:1.0 is dead, then it would be useful to know that. We could remove a fair bit of information in the old directory if that were true. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:28, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
WhatamIdoing, I think once the old directory is fully supplanted we can just use a redirect. :)
I am not sure it's within my discretion to say that WP:1.0 is outright deprecated. That may take a larger conversation. But I am not sure it is worth embedding all the links in the directory, either. As I see it (and I would appreciate any data that might contradict this), the primary purpose of the directory is finding WikiProjects, with finding the particulars of the WikiProject being secondary. I am concerned that having all the links to assessments and the like creates clutter for the directory; if people really want that information, they can visit the WikiProject.
So, considering the new WikiProject Directory as it exists now, is there anything that is missing that would make you or someone else object to replacing the Council directory with this one? (Other than certain WikiProjects being missing from the topical sub-directories, which I am aware of.) Harej (talk) 15:38, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
It might be good for us to figure out if 1.0 is "historical" now, regardless of the new directory.
The new directory doesn't have a direct link to the project page or its talk page, both of which might be useful. (You have to click through to the description to get to the project page.) Perhaps a (page • talk) link?
The old directory also includes links to collaborations and portals, both of which I think we can safely omit. But an indication of task forces might be helpful. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Science#Medicine for an example. They're tolerably rare, though, so perhaps that is best left to project pages. We might want to wait a bit on the 1.0 question. m:Wikipedia to the Moon might be able to use the 1.0 team's infrastructure. We should see whether that sparks any revival. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:25, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
WhatamIdoing, noted on holding off on deprecating 1.0. I'd like to link directly to the project page, but I had to get the template to be very small in size in order for it to work while still being transcluded over 2,600 times on one page, meaning I had to sacrifice that link. Our upcoming MediaWiki extension will hopefully make that better by incorporating the in-line styling into a proper CSS file, meaning we can add more features while keeping the template size small. I do plan on associating task forces with individual WikiProjects; that will be done through Wikidata. See d:Q10656655 for example. (The conclusion I came to is that task forces are common enough that it's worth associating them with their parent projects, rather than just treating them as WikiProject equivalents.) I wonder if you could reduce the template size even further by putting even more of it on Wikidata.

Hello, Kippelboy! Currently we are working on making an extension, CollaborationKit, to make WikiProjects easier to organize and run. One of the benefits of this is that it will be much easier to internationalize. And I am aware of how much the Catalan Wikipedia enjoys trying out with the new tools. (Speaking of which: have you seen Wikipedia Requests? We're accepting interface translations.) Once we have a working prototype of the extension, would you be interested in trying it out? Women in red wikidata feed by language?

Would it be possible to have a 'women in red' page like this Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Tasks/Wikidata Missing Article Report, but divided by language to be translated from rather than by the women's occupations? It would be useful for someone who is interested in translating articles from one language to the English Wikipedia and needs to identify articles which are well-sourced in the other language. --211.30.17.74 (talk) 02:46, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Hi James, yesterday was really productive. Looking forward to moving forward with those plans.

On a new subject, Dr. Blofeld came up with a great idea, "Women in Green", as a Good Article campaign under WP:WikiProject Women. Do you have time to create the logo for it --> Women in Green logo.svg before I speak on Saturday at Wikimania? Join us for an evening of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art Library's second annual Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to LGBT art, culture and history.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Also featuring a lightning talk by CUNY students at the La Guardia and Wagner Archives on a project to document local 1980s HIV/AIDS activism on Wikipedia.

Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Did you know?

It's quick and easy to insert a references list.

Screenshot showing a dropdown menu with many items

Place the cursor where you want to display the references list (usually at the bottom of the page). Open the "Insert" menu and click the "References list" icon (three books).

If you are using several groups of references, which is relatively rare, you will have the opportunity to specify the group. If you do that, then only the references that belong to the specified group will be displayed in this list of references.

Finally, click "Insert" in the dialog to insert the References list. This list will change as you add more footnotes to the page.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Arabic and Indic scripts, and adapting the visual editor to the needs of the Wikivoyages and Wikisources.

Recent changes

The visual editor is now available to all users at most Wikivoyages. It was also enabled for all contributors at the French Wikinews.

The single edit tab feature combines the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. It has been deployed to several Wikipedias, including Hungarian, Polish, English and Japanese Wikipedias, as well as to all Wikivoyages. At these wikis, you can change your settings for this feature in the "Editing" tab of Special:Preferences. The team is now reviewing the feedback and considering ways to improve the design before rolling it out to more people.

Future changes

The "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including: Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Assamese, Aramaic and others.

The team is working with the volunteer developers who power Wikisource to provide the visual editor there, for opt-in testing right now and eventually for all users. (T138966)

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. It will look like the visual editor, and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices around September 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Request tools

I saw the Meetup about Safe and Healthy at Work. I thought it was super interesting and I wanted to propose 3 topics Fire safety, hand washing and home safety.

But when I tried to add them to the request system (first time I use it...), only Fire safety appears on this list for the meetup. I can't have the others appear in the list of topics that could be worked upon during that edit-a-thon. On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism.

New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support.

Can’t join us in New York? Visit our global MENA Artists Month partnership page to coordinate international and online events as well.

If I reduce the width of the page, the top part overlap with the bottom part. I have no idea how to avoid that. I guess there must be a code or something to prevent it ? Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Harej. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

10,000 Asia Challenge

Hi, I wondered if you or somebody you know would be interested in joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge? The idea is to showcase the work being done on wikipedia across the continent, and inspire more people to create and work on countries which might not usually get much attention and then possibly running some contests to bring in new editors. It would be a good framework I think to encourage more articles on Asian women next month, and possibly you could run contests then towards it and encourage people to create or improve more. Women in Red main page editing difficulties

Hi Harej. I have recently been creating quite a number of new Wikidata-based lists of redlinks for Women in Red. I have been using the format developed by emijrp as it not only displays the names but has sortable columns on the Wikidata description, dates of birth and death and image and provides access to the Q-item. Now that I have more or less completed country-by-country listings, I would like to add lists by occupation/profession. While your additions on the WiR page covering Women in architecture, artists, activists, scientists, technology, writers and philosophers have been useful, I think our participants would prefer the new display format for the various occupations. My problem once again is that I cannot edit the page as the "edit" for "From Wikidata" is not active. Could you or The Earwig sort this out and I can then begin to add links along the lines of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by occupation/Scientists.--Ipigott (talk) 12:53, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

On Sunday, October 16, Wikimedia NYC will host a multimedia tutorial, workshop, and hackathon focused on Wikimedia Commons and the work processes for cultural multimedia wiki-projects.

The CommonsLab is the concluding "upload party" to the Wikipedia @ Open House New York Weekend photo scavenger hunt, and an accompanying Wikimedia Commons multimedia hackathon.

Did you know that you can easily re-arrange columns and rows in the visual editor?

Select a cell in the column or row that you want to move. Click the arrow at the start of that row or column to open the dropdown menu (shown). Choose either "Move before" or "Move after" to move the column, or "Move above" or "Move below" to move the row.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has mainly worked on a new wikitext editor. They have also released some small features and the new map editing tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the list of work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, releasing the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving language support.

Recent changes

  • You can now set text as small or big.[3]
  • Invisible templates have been shown as a puzzle icon. Now, the name of the invisible template is displayed next to the puzzle icon.[4] A similar feature will display the first part of hidden HTML comments.[5]
  • Categories are displayed at the bottom of each page. If you click on the categories, the dialog for editing categories will open.[6]
  • At many wikis, you can now add maps to pages. Go to the Insert menu and choose the "Maps" item. The Discovery department are adding more features to this area, like geoshapes. You can read more on MediaWiki.org.[7]
  • The "Save" button now says "Save page" when you create a page, and "Save changes" when you change an existing page.[8] In the future, the "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.
  • Image galleries now use a visual mode for editing. You can see thumbnails of the images, add new files, remove unwanted images, rearrange the images by dragging and dropping, and add captions for each image. Use the "Options" tab to set the gallery's display mode, image sizes, and add a title for the gallery.[9]

Future changes

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining 10 "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next month. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including Thai, Burmese and Aramaic.

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. The 2017 wikitext editor will look like the visual editor and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices in October 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Join us for a full Saturday of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of Latin American artists.

The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia.

Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio.

The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and works of Latin American artists, architects and designers. With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others), the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Introductory training on the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given throughout the edit-a-thon. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Join us for a full Saturday of social Wikipedia editing at NY Academy of Sciences (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles covering Women in science for their second annual edit-a-thon!.

This event also coincides with the year-long celebration of the Academy's 200th Anniversary and a Women in Red online campaign.

Beginning and experienced Wikipedia writers are both welcome, and there will be helpers on hand to assist those new to editing the encyclopedia.

More Reports bot woes

Reports bot hasn't meaningfully updated Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Metrics/November 2016 since 6 November. I've added perhaps 300 new women biography artices to wikidata in the past three days, none of which have made it to the report. Grateful if you'd look into it. Grateful also if you'd explain the underlying algorithm of report bot with respect to this report ... what is it using as an information source, how does it work. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:38, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

The main thing is Wikipedia:WikiProject_X/wikiproject.json needs to have its wikidata_missing_articles entries (and metrics/wikidata_query entries, assuming you want to update that too) replaced with SPARQL queries. That's exactly it, Ipigott. The reports were built on an older system that the creator himself has since said should no longer be used. We now use the Wikidata Query Service, which is professionally developed and maintained and is considered "production" grade rather than experimental. Harej (talk) 18:49, 11 November 2016 (UTC)

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Harej.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

GA script

Hi Harej, might you be able to help me with User:GA bot/goodarticles.php? I know you haven't touched it in a while, but it doesn't look like anyone has touched it since. I'm somehow counted at User:GA_bot/Stats, but my count doesn't display at WP:GAN and hasn't in years. As the count is used socially to determine whose work to review, it puts me and similar editors in a quandary. I imagine it has to do with signature parsing. Would you be able to take a quick look and see if it's a quick fix? czar 17:23, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Seraphimsystem, the edit was part of earlier work to migrate category associations to the WikiProject's dedicated category where one existed. Thus categories like "Regional WikiProjects" would go in WikiProject Palestine, rather than on Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine, since the former exists. This is to streamline the category system.
