Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello HJ Mitchell,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 22:44, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Ealdgyth, SchroCat, and MarnetteD: Thank you all for the good wishes. Merry Christmas to you and yours. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:57, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for Devon County War Memorial, "a smaller monument (a single cross on the cathedral green in Exeter) but it has an interesting history, not least the contrast Exeter's own war memorial five minutes' walk away"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:44, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Gerda. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:58, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Tommy Robinson

What are you talking about, Tommy Robinson himself said that his parents are Scottish and Irish - not English. Therefore, his nationality is Scotch-Irish by definition. Certainly it's fair to say he's a British citizen, but Britain isn't a nation. Abattoir666 (talk) 03:09, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

I'll quote the Wiki Article on this: "Robinson was born Stephen Christopher Yaxley[10] in Luton, England. In an interview with Victoria Derbyshire on BBC Radio Five live in 2010, he said that his parents "were Irish immigrants to this country".[11] His mother, who worked at a local bakery,[12] remarried when Robinson was still young; his stepfather, Thomas Lennon,[1] worked at the Vauxhall car plant in Luton."

@Abattoir666: I'm talking about putting "being a pre-eminent English Nationalist while not being English" in the infobox. That's not exactly encyclopaedic, is it? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:40, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Alrightm that last bit is fair. Compromise, I won't put in the snide remark, but we leave his nationality as Scotch-Irish (it is Wikipedia's responsibility to speak truth, be it to power or the masses). Oh, and we revert the elisions that English nationalists will naturally try to stick in. 03:33, 23 December 2018 (UTC)Abattoir666 (talk)

That reminds me! What the Southampton Cenotaph is "incomparably more significant" than, is a statue of Issac Watts, the famous (!) hymnster. You can see it at the bottom of his article. KJP1 (talk) 14:37, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

AirTrain JFK - FAC

Hey Harry, thank you for your comments at the FAC for AirTrain JFK. I truly appreciate the feedback, even though you opposed the nomination, as it gave me some time to make some changes and think about whether I should really be including all these details in the article. I've started trimming the content on the AirTrain article. Let me know if I'm on the right track. This is only my third or fourth article that I've nominated for FAC, so I really do appreciate the criticism. Thanks again, and have a happy new year. epicgenius (talk) 02:02, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

You're welcome, and it's nice to see you're taking the oppose in the vein it was meant. Nominators sometimes take criticism personally but at the end of the day we all want the same thing. I'll look back when I get chance. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:49, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Thanks for the thorough review of the AirTrain JFK page's FAC. I truly appreciate your many hours of effort on the review, even after you initially opposed it. Hey Epicgenius. Sorry, I forgot to reply to this the other day! I'm glad we were able to make progress on the AirTrain article. I see there's been some more tweaking necessary since I supported, but I honestly think the article is in much better shape, and I'm glad my feedback has helped you to improve your writing. That's the best outcome anyone can hope for when they oppose an FAC (something I'm loathe to do as a general rule. Sometimes nominators take the criticism too personally, which doesn't do the article any good. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:57, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

@JDDJS: As long as it's just for your personal reading and you don't intend to post it to Wikipepdia or anywhere else (you didn't write it, so the copyright belongs to the people who did). Check your email. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:22, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Check this out...

For some reason, you're listed here as top user by added text to the Black mamba article (!). I can now say with authority that cleaning up after copyvio is harder than writing from scratch. I used to scoff a bit when folks such as iridescent just rewrote articles from scratch but this was a lotta work....and there are still other snake articles the banned user did to review....sigh. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:11, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Cas, I haven't looked at that article, but sometimes when people are listed as having added the top text it can mean they reverted page blanking. I noticed this recently elsewhere, where several editors not involved in writing an article are listed as having added the most text to it. I looked up their edits to see how that was possible, and found they had reverted page-blanking vandalism, which means that the size of the whole page is attributed to them in the WMF's article history. SarahSV (talk) 22:41, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
Interesting, I should have thought of that....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:35, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
It could mean that when the history of Wikipedia is written many years hence, a handful of vandalism fighters may look as though they wrote most of the encyclopaedia. :) SarahSV (talk) 03:24, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
I better go revert some page blanking then :) Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 08:29, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
That'll almost certainly be a revert of vandalism. I don't recall editing that article, but snakes are interesting (from a respectful distance, the bigger or more venomous the snake, the more respectful the distance!) so I was planning to have a read and leave some comments on the FAC. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:12, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
That'd be really cool (reviewing that is) - I haven't really edited many controversial science articles, so this was a bit of a learning curve. It's funny how certain topics become war zones, including largest eagles, largest stars, poisonous snakes, lions....and I have thought more about the FA process being the next best thing we have for a Stable Version....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 18:52, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

Kamala Harris and Discretionary Sanctions

I'm afraid I'm not clear on how these things work. In a nutshell, Capriaf (talk · contribs) has twice re-added material he's added (reverted the removal of, in other words) to Kamala Harris, which is under the American Politics discretionary sanctions and has the "one revert per 24 hours" edit notice on it. So, does this need to go the the arbitration enforcement board or can any admin deal with it?

  1. 17:32, January 30, 2019 First revert to restore material added
  2. Date Second revert

Note also that Capriaf has

  1. been notified of both the D/S and the violation
  2. has been blocked once already under D/S, in 2017, and failed an appeal.

Thank you. --Calton | Talk 18:43, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

-I'd like to add that, each time, I added new material to be in compliance with article standards. I also put it up on the talk page. Pure deletion of my edit makes it far more biased. I added a note in my edit saying, if it seems editorial, it should be revised to appear less editorial. capriaf 19:08 UTC January 30, 2019.

@Calton: Normally the place for this is WP:AE, especially for anything that's not cut and dried. In this case, the violation is obvious and Capriaf is well aware of the sanctions, having been previously blocked as a result of them, so I'm confident acting on my own. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:40, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. The thing is, I checked Capriaf's block log and saw that Capriaf had received an AE block, BUT a search of the AE board only turn up an appeal of the block. So I was confused. --Calton | Talk 16:09, 31 January 2019 (UTC)
@Calton: The place to look, if it's a discretionary sanction, is WP:DSLOG (I'd forgotten to log this block there but I've rectified that now). Admins are empowered to act on their own discretion (hence the "discretionary" in "discretionary sanctions"); AE is just a centralised venue for editors to bring issues to admin attention or for discussion of complex issues.

By the way, while you're here there's a minor issue with your signature: the pipe ( | ) between your userpage and talk links needs to be |, which displays the same but the software doenss't treat it as markup. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:55, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

NHLE template

Harry,

Thanks for making me aware of the above. It's a very useful template. I'm sure this question has been asked before, but does a corresponding version exist for Cadw properties? If it doesn't, how would I go about requesting one? It will be quite a large job to update the Monmouthshire Grade I and Grade II*s but worth it long-term. Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 08:09, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

@KJP1: I don't think there is. I don't think Cadw's records are online the way Historic England's are, so we still have to use the British Listed Buildings site. If or when Cadw come up with an online, searchable database, hopefully somebody will be able to write a bot to change all the citations. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:34, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
You can get them online, here, [1], although it's not as helpful as the HE site. I've asked the template creator about the chances of creating one. Best, KJP1 (talk) 07:04, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.

A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.

The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

The Kingfisher

I am posting here after peeking at Bishonen's talk page and understanding that much of the block here is per your analysis. I request you look at the thread at Bbb23 page. I specifically, and respectfully, want to point that The Kingfisher does not edit on Shabbat PST time. This is clearly evident in their time histogram The Kingfisher (as well as their contribution log). In contrast, NoCal (and subsequent accounts blocked for being NoCal socks) - NoCal100, Epson Salts, When Other Legends Are Forgotten, and Firkin Flying Fox - did edit on Shabbat. Orthdox Jews, may not per their religious beliefs, operate electronic devices (including Wikipedia) during Shabbat (~25 hours from Friday sundown to Saturday night - exit/entry varies by time of year and geography).Icewhiz (talk) 17:23, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

@Icewhiz: I hadn't actually made my mind up on this one. I felt the evidence was good enough to ask to ask a checkuser to investigate. I often find it helpful to ask for a checkuser once a prima facie case has been made because sometimes it can conclusively rule a connection in or out. I was hoping that those investigations would shed more light. Bbb came back with a "slightly less than  Likely" and decided that that, combined with the behavioural evidence presented, was sufficient grounds for a block. I don't have access to the technical data that Bbb used to draw his conclusions, but the bahavioural evidence appears to lead to a similar conclusion—in particular, there is long-stnading bad blood between NoCal (in various guises) and Nableezy, and KF has edited several obscure articles in common with previous NoCal socks, and it's always suspicious to see a relativley new editor filing AE reports that seem to indicate knowledge of events that predate their account. Kamala Harris edit-warrior

On 30 January, you blocked an editor, Capriaf, for two weeks due to edit-warring on the Kamala Harris page. That editor has now served his ban and has immediately resumed to his old ways and earlier today restored a similar version of the content that he was banned for edit-warring into the article.[2][3] Snooganssnoogans (talk) 01:36, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

I waited a few days since my ban ended. I followed the advice given upon my changes and went directly to the talk page as directed. I made completely different edits this time. I went further in detail and no one acknowledged my concerns on the talk page. I am making a good faith edit and did ONE edit since the reversion made against me in twenty-four hours as permitted. I am not edit warring. Rather I am trying to comply to your standards. I specifically cited stuff relevant and said I encourage people to edit to better comply with Wikipedia standards. If it gets reverted, I will do further research and rework so it can comply with the standards set forth. Snooganssnoogans is giving an unfair critique of me. I specifically made a different edit as permitted. Capriaf

@Snooganssnoogans: You'll need to file a report at WP:AE. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:29, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I have put 1989 for Peer review. I believe the article is well researched based on other FAs that I modeled this on. My biggest concern is the prose, which is my weakest expertise. If possible, I would like to have your input regarding the article's current word use, grammar, sentence structures etc. Feel free to do so when you are available. Southampton Cenotaph

Hi Harry, I note that this only needs a source review to pass FAC. I would be happy to provide it - I came close to FAC standard with my ACR source review. However, if I do, the Wikilinking issue will come up again. So I will leave it for a third opinion unless you ask me to step in. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:54, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

FAC Mentoring

Hello,

I'm looking to nominate 1927 Chicago mayoral election for FA status and wanted to know if you'd be able to mentor for me (it's my first FA candidate). There's still a few finishing touches I'd like to do (finish the ward table, add in some more citations, etc.) but I wanted your thoughts on it ASAP before I formally submit it. Thanks so much! -John M Wolfson (talk) 18:26, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
