Atlantic Salmon Federation page

Hi -

I have just taken down the ATLANTIC SALMON FEDERATION Wikipedia page. Will try again, with much simpler page. Can you just erase the rest of the site entirely until I get that done? It would be very much appreciated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Salmon_Federation Thank you - Tom Moffatt — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomasfmoffatt (talkcontribs) 19:51, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your cooperation (it's pretty rare). If you ever need help, let me know here. Good luck! :) Guoguo12--Talk--

messages on talk pages?

Hello, Guoguo12. You have new messages at Chadricko's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Would this be the proper way to write someone and sign the post? I am new to posting and would like to update many aspects of Sacramento State University's page as many things have changed on campus and could use some guidance.

(Chadricko (talk) 17:17, 14 December 2010 (UTC))
You don't need to put a talkback template if you didn't reply to something on your talk page. Also, don't put a space before your signature, or it will be displayed the way it is now. Guoguo12--Talk--  19:46, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi. In September you PRODded this, and it was deleted. Undeletion has now been requested at WP:REFUND, so per WP:DEL#Proposed deletion I have restored it, and now notify you in case you wish to consider taking it to AfD. The requester says he can add references, but he is a newbie so give him some time. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:54, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for informing me. I'll take a look at the article in, say, two or so weeks. Guoguo12--Talk--  22:49, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Need Help

  • The people (or Madonna fans) at the Confessions on a Dance Floor page and Madonna albums discography are trying to erase my reliable sources of the album selling 8.5 million figure, to an unreliable source of 12 million from a blog. And they have been trying to block me from wiki because of it. Please help me 76.117.166.71 (talk) 02:34, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Actually, the source added by "the people" appears to be a news blog run by a reputable news source. According to Wikipedia's guidelines on reliable sources, "Some news outlets host interactive columns they call blogs, and these may be acceptable as sources so long as the writers are professional journalists or are professionals in the field on which they write and the blog is subject to the news outlet's full editorial control." If I were you, I'd go with which ever source is more recent. Guoguo12--Talk--  02:49, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
  • The more recent ones are actually from her label.

Chicago Sun Times source

  • I understand certain guidelines, but I hope this helps.76.117.166.71 (talk) 02:53, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

Atlantic Salmon Federation

Hi -

Have just put up an ultra-simple Atlantic_Salmon_Federation write-up - having taken down the elaborate one.

I still regret the difficulties experienced in putting up a more elaborate listing as there are some really interesting "state of the art" things happening - most particularly ASF's sonic tracking of Atlantic salmon between North America and Greenland, and ASF's involvement in taking down dams. (Yesterday ASF and partners paid $24M US for three dams, that will removed, while hydro capacity goes to other existing dams).

Do not want to run afoul of Wikipedia policies, but the difficulty with the above things is that much of the reference material comes from within the organization - hence the difficulty.

Any thoughts from you would be welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomasfmoffatt (talkcontribs) 15:27, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for working so hard to make the page policy-compliant. If there's anything you want to add, add it but don't copy and paste it from elsewhere. Also, if you add any statistics or anything controversial, cite the source. If you need help, let me know. Happy holidays! Guoguo12--Talk--  21:12, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Re: Revision

The edit i put on this page changing the endowment from 129 to 71.3 does not need another citation. The citation used for the orig post explains that it should be 71.3 million, 129 million is simply the total assets —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.220.41.15 (talk) 21:16, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I see. Sorry about that. I thought it was original research. Guoguo12--Talk--  21:18, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

"why is it that when i search for "retards attempting poetry" wikipedia displays a list of search results with italian litrature at the top and it it has "100% relavence" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.107.194.183 (talk) 12:45, 30 October 2007 (UTC)"

Shouldn't you remove this from "italian literature" discussion page? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.222.67.46 (talk) 21:32, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea what you mean. Searching "retards attempting poetry" does not yield anything related to Italian literature. Please stop your disruptive editing. Guoguo12--Talk--  21:34, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

User:84.222.67.46 was directing you to an old insult on the talkpage. It appears the IP was attempting to defend their vandalism by pointing out a pre-existing example. I have now removed the insult, and archived the rest of the talkpage. SilkTork *YES! 12:44, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Happy holidays to you too. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 00:51, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

I have just added my "support", and I really do hope you succeed. However, if you don't then think carefully about the reasons given by those who oppose, try to take on board what they say, work at making contributions which answer their points, and come back in six months to a year. I am confident you will make a good admin some day. Time and time again in AfDs there are opposes based on "not enough content creation". As far as I am concerned, anyone whose main contributions are writing contributions doesn't need to be an admin, but someone who makes strong anti-vandalism contributions can benefit enormously from having the mop, sp I regard that argument as unhelpful. However, rightly or wrongly, that argument is frequently used, and so it is worth taking the trouble to write a few articles and add significantly to some existing ones, so as to get those Wikipedians who use that argument onto your side. Once again, I hope you succeed this time, but if you don't then I help this advice will help you to prepare better for next time. JamesBWatson (talk) 17:01, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your support and advice. I'll be sure to address the issues in the oppose section to the best of my abilities whether I succeed or not. Thanks again (and happy holidays)! Guoguo12--Talk--  21:57, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Your RFA is not going to succeed, and people are asking you to withdraw. Among the things that people like an admin to have is good judgement, another is a selfless attitude, so they do things for the best of the community rather than for themselves, another is to respond well to advice, and another is to pick up on consensus and do the right thing. Putting all these things together it will do your next RFA good if you withdrew from this one with a comment of thanks. SilkTork *YES! 12:22, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, but I would like some more comments. I absolutely agree that judgement and selflessness are key characteristics in any person. However, like Wifione said:

"And no, I don't think the candidate should withdraw this RfA before the seven day period is over. As the candidate has understood logically, this will allow the maximum editors to provide their views on what areas need to be improved."

However, I will consider withdrawing; thanks for your input. Guoguo12--Talk--  15:36, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to see you won't get admin-ship this year. Better luck in 2011! Sumsum2010·T·C 04:02, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, and also thanks for supporting me! Speaking of RfAs, I wouldn't be surprised to see your name at WP:RFA some time in 2011. Keep up the good work! Aww... you're still ahead of me. Guoguo12--Talk--  04:12, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
I've been thinking about that, maybe in the summer. You're still doing a lot better than most of the participants! Sumsum2010·T·C 04:21, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Perhaps, perhaps not. I guess I'll give it another try in June or so. Guoguo12--Talk--  04:23, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
I just wanted to say that I hope you haven't been discouraged, and consider running again in a while. Although I reluctantly opposed this time round, it was only due to a lack of experience in certain areas; what you have contributed has been very impressive. You show plenty of potential, so I hope you stick with us. Best wishes for the future, Trebor (talk) 02:58, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind words, Trebor. I guess nobody read my withdrawl statement. Anyway, I'll most certainly stay on Wikipedia. Guoguo12--Talk--  04:16, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2011 WikiCup!

Hello and welcome to the 2011 WikiCup! Your submissions' page can be found here and instructions of how to update the page can be found here and on the submissions' page itself. From the submissions' page, a bot will update the main scoresheet. Our rules have been very slightly updated from last year; the full rules can be found here. Please remember that you can only receive points for content on which you have done significant work in 2011; nominations of work from last year and "drive-by" nominations will not be awarded points. Signups are going to remain open through January, so if you know of anyone who would like to take part, please direct them to Wikipedia:WikiCup/2011 signups. The judges can be contacted on the WikiCup talk page, on their respective talk pages, or by email. Other than that, we will be in contact at the end of every month with the newsletter. If you want to stop or start receiving newsletters, please remove your name from or add your name to this list. Good luck! J Milburn and The ed17 21:58, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Cleanup Drive

Hi, I'm planning on participating in the cleanup drive...but can you try to clear up the instructions on how to update stats on the leaderboard?? I don't really understand them or where to pull the numbers from. Sorry for asking such a noob question! HatBucketBalls (talk) 16:42, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for planning to help out! If you're talking about stats, it works like this. Before you wikify (add links, fix HTML, add lead section, etc.) an article, you note the articles word count, which is the number of words in the article. After wikification, you update your own statistics with the word count, date, article name, et cetera. Then you can add your name to the leaderboard if you are in a position to do so (right now there's plenty of slots in the "# of days the user wikified 5 or more pages" column).

To find word counts:

  1. Click here: Custom JS
  2. Click "Edit"
  3. Add the following code to the page and save it: {{subst:js|User:Dr pda/prosesize.js}}
  4. Reload the cache.
  5. To test it out go to any random article. If you look under the Toolbox menu on the far left of the screen there will be a link for Page size. The backlog elimination drive uses the number of words listed under Prose size (text only).
  6. Go wikify!
Feel free to ask any other questions! Guoguo12--Talk--  20:03, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Actually, the page logs suggest that it has been tagged before and the request succeeded. Guoguo12--Talk--  02:26, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
I couldn't spot that in the page history but have since learned why. Clearly the page was re-created - oddly, this is the second one I've come across in one day & user:C.Fred has explained it to me. My knowledge of the original CSD came from the original editor's talk page, not from the logs. I need to work out how to access the logs for situations like this. Relisting of arguments

  • You relisted the argument in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ron Ainsworth and provided no rationale for doing so, other than what was in the template. Before the relist, there had already been 9 comments made, 2/3rds of which were in support of following a written guideline, which is ostensibly what you and I are supposed to do as admins. If you feel that you must relist a debate under that type of circumstance, please provide an explanation for doing so. I can see no justification for it in this case. I have had to enforce the rules of WP:ATHLETE even when I did not agree with that policy. If you feel that there should be further debate on that policy, then it should be done elsewhere. Mandsford 13:42, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
    • AfD closed as keep, but let me explain. Looking at the version on 19 February, I saw a number of strong keep or keep !votes, which I took into account, along with several delete !votes, including by the nominator. None of the arguments for deletion were rebutted logically; WWGB's counterargument claiming there are "no ifs, buts or maybes" contradicts WP:IAR and basically argues that WP:NSPORTS is the absolute final law, which it isn't. Mattinbgn's delete/merge argument, also not rebutted, is valid, pointing to the possibly unfulfilled WP:GNG. However, despite any reasoning probelms, I asked for additional input because I wanted to correctly assess consensus; here, relisting seems to have been unnecessary, and for that I apologize, but I still think that a little more input is better than a little less. I am sorry for any inconvenience. Guoguo12--Talk--  18:08, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Are you new to being an administrator? I noticed that you wrote "non-administrative closure" and I don't see you on this list Wikipedia:List of administrators/G-O. If you are an admin, I can only say that all of the admins seek to correctly assess consensus, and that I think that most would have closed this after seven days. If you are not an admin, then I will simply ask that you please not do this again. In this case, you've remedied whatever disruption was created, and as far as I'm concerned, it is water under the bridge. Non-admin closures are appropriate in cases where WP:SPEEDY or WP:SNOW would apply; and, it is appropriate to include a "note to closing administrator" in a comment if you believe that something should be relisted, or if there is an issue that has not been addressed. However, closing or keeping open a discussion is generally the function of an administrator. Mandsford 16:40, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
As I have before, I apologize for my actions. As you can see from my User rights log, I am not an administrator. I also assure you that I will not attempt to close an AfD again. Guoguo12--Talk--  18:47, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
  • Thanks. The matter's closed. Mandsford 20:54, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. Public Policy Initiative Recruiting Assessors for Spring

Hi Guoguo12,
I would like to ask you if you want to participate in an initiative [Public Policy Initiative (PPI)] carried out by Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy. If you are interested in research and want to experiment with article assessment or just want to help out, please, join our group of assessors because we really need your help. If you have questions or need more information, please check out the discussion on the assessment tab and the WPUSPP Assessment department, or contact ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk · contribs), who is the Research Analyst for the project. Also, if you know valuable and trusted editors who are expert in USPP and/or articles assessment, please invite them to participate to this project. The work to be done is not so much, and will start next spring. Your help would be much needed and greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and all the best. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 10:31, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind invitation. Guoguo12--Talk--  20:23, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

IRC invitation

Because I have noticed you commenting at the current RfC regarding Pending Changes, I wanted to invite you to the IRC channel for pending changes. If you are not customarily logged into the IRC, use this link. This under used resource can allow real time discussion at this particularly timely venture of the trial known as Pending Changes. Even if nothing can come from debating points there, at least this invitation is delivered with the best of intentions and good faith expectations. Kind regards. My76Strat 08:21, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind invitation. (That's two this week!) Guoguo12--Talk--  20:23, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

I fail to see how edits like this are useful. Furthermore, I highly advise you to stop vandalizing Wikipedia or you may be blocked from editing. Guoguo12--Talk--  00:20, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

The Battle Of Atlanta Wiki article

Hi. I am citing Garrets Atlanta and its Environs as my source for all the lines I enterd. I an new to Wikipedia any tips or help would be welcomed — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnpack1 (talkcontribs) 20:42, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for adding some more details. I realized that I've actually used the same source before, though I had cited in differently (never mind the details). I've cleaned up some of your edits and I've removed some of the more interesting but less encyclopedic narrative portions. I've also referenced them with {{sfn|Garrett|1987|p=}}. You can see this in the source code. What the code does is that it creates linking footnotes. It would really help if you could provide the page numbers for the ones without page numbers; these are the ones following the sentences you added, since I don't own the book. Just add the page number after p=. For example, if a sentence is citing page 55 of Atlanta and Environs as its source, update {{sfn|Garrett|1987|p=}} to make it read {{sfn|Garrett|1987|p=55}}. If you're confused, or have any questions, just ask me and I'll see if I can help. Thanks! (I hope you like it here on Wikipedia!) Guoguo12--Talk--  22:00, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Interview

Hi Guoguo12, Thanks for participating in the interview. If possible, can you please answer question 1? You do not need to give any personal information if you do not wish to do so, but some basic background info would be nice. If not, I will just use your edit history as a guide, but it would be nicer if it comes from you. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 01:12, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

First thoughts on the drive

First off, good job. You done an excellent job leading the project in the last few days and the drive looks like it will do well. That said, can we please add {{Articles that need to be wikified progress}} to the "track" page? It seems rather hard to find and I'd imagine we want that to be very visible - its practically a checklist for the drive. I'd do it myself but I figured you might have a better reason for excluding it. Nolelover It's almost football season! 00:14, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Well, it looked kind of messy, so I moved it to the instructions page. Move it back if you wish... Guoguo12--Talk--  15:38, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Meh, that's alright. I just wanted to make sure that you knew it wasn't there. Nolelover It's almost football season! 18:44, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
