Question from Jyergin on Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) (18:17, 2 January 2024)

Is it possible to export a Semantic MediaWiki to Wikipedia? Or, portions of it? We had some development on especially the Organizations portal. https://wiki.wcpl.info/w/Main_Page Things to consider? Process? --Jyergin (talk) 18:17, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Jyergin - I'm not familiar with Semantic MediaWiki - I can help with issues related to editing the *content* of English Wikipedia. If you're looking for help with programming issues, you might try posting a question at the Semantic MediaWiki community board: [1]. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 04:09, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Seemslegitz (16:36, 6 January 2024)

Guten Tag!

There is a article, Bluey (2018 TV series) I've noticed needs updating, and so does the article, Furry Fandom, but both are semi-protected articles, is there anyway I can speed up being able to edit these articles? --Seemslegitz (talk) 16:36, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Seemslegitz - an article with semi-protection cannot be edited by IP addresses or accounts that are less than four days old and less than 10 edits (see WP:SEMI for more details). While you've made more than 10 edits, as your account is about a day old, you're unable to edit semi-protected pages. However, I can see you left a comment at the talk page, which is the best thing to do at this point. If no one replies or the edit isn't made, you'll be able to do it yourself in three days. Where you are not making copy-editing/stylistic changes, don't forget to include reliable sourcing with your changes/additions. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 01:10, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Amogus123454321 (00:02, 19 December 2023)

Hello, if i am editing somewhere with numbered columns, how do i add something straight to the top without disturbing the other columns? --Amogus123454321 (talk) 00:02, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Amogus123454321 - I'm not exactly clear what you are trying to do. Are you wanting to add a cell to a column in a table? Are you able to point me to the article that you are trying to edit? Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 00:18, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes i am trying to add a cell to a column in a table, regards, Amogus123454321 (talk) 23:56, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Amogus123454321 - can you point me to the specific table where you are trying to add the cell, please. Are you using visual editor or directly editing the wikitext? If you are editing via the mobile app, I don't have experience with that, but I suspect it is more complicated that way. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 10:58, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
I am directly editing it and for the table, click on the first list. I am editing - Tallest buildings in Canada - i am using website. Regards, Amogus123454321 (talk) 03:00, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Amogus123454321 - happy new year, apologies for the delay reply. In terms of editing the table at Tallest buildings in Canada it looks like the item you wanted has been added. It looks like the count is not correct however. I'll try to fix it. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 04:17, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Ok thanks happy new year to you too Amogus123454321 (talk) 00:24, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Also, is there a way to automatically change the numbers because in a big list i cant change 200 numbers Amogus123454321 (talk) 00:26, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Amogus123454321 this template: {{Static row numbers}} allows the creation of tables where rows are automatically counted. In terms of the Tallest buildings in Canada table, it might be possible to convert that table. You could try leaving a message on the talk page of the editor who created that template: User talk:Jts1882, they might be able to help further. This level of table automation is beyond me (I did manually fix the table!). Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 08:26, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from ExoField (17:12, 7 January 2024)

Hello, how do I upload a logo for an institution on their wiki page? --ExoField (talk) 17:12, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @ExoField. Images are usually uploaded to Commons, but with logos some caution is necessary. Logos are normally copyright of the organisation, so how Wikipedia uses them is different from images in general. Basically, a low quality version of a copyright logo can be used in a single instance, under a fair use principle. Can you tell me which logo you would like to upload? Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 20:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
What if I'm uploading the organisation's own logo on their own Wikipedia page?
I'll link you the logo, it's from their official website. Actually, nevermind, I tried to link it, but Wikipedia blocked it. It's the logo of Khyber Medical College, I think it'll show up if you search for it ExoField (talk) 21:00, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Also, I'm unable to access Wikimedia Commons, I think it's blocked in my country ExoField (talk) 21:07, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @ExoField looking at the Khyber Medical College website, I can see this logo:
https://www.kmc.edu.pk/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/KMC-1.png
Is that the one? Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:54, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Try this link to Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Normally, I would say, if you have access to English Wikipedia you should have access to Commons as they are only different subdomains of the same top-level domain (wikimedia.org). Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:56, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
wikipedia.org and wikimedia.org are separate domains though and could be blocked for different reasons. Even if they were same domain, some routers/proxies filter by sub-domains too (commons part of commons.wikimedia.org and en part of en.wikipedia.org) ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 00:47, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
@Shushugah: D'oh...and thank you! I really need to get that new prescription for my reading glasses. Sigh :) Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 00:51, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
No worries :D @ExoField Another possibility is that the (logged out mode) IP address might block you from editing, but if you sign into Wikimedia commons (same username/password as Wikipedia) that will change that. But that shouldn't be the case either way for merely accessing the commons. Can you confirm if it works? ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 01:17, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I might have made a mistake, I was unable to access Wikimedia Commons, so I used a VPN and got my IP blocked. Turns out the reason I wasn't able to access it before was because the government slowed down internet services across the country. Thanks for the help though! ExoField (talk) 10:35, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
This link doesn't work either, it just shows an error that the connection has been reset, this type of error usually shows up when the government has banned a certain website. I'm not really sure with this case though. ExoField (talk) 10:43, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, this one is perfect (I was referring to the one in the middle, the emblem, but this one is good too) ExoField (talk) 14:52, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
How much do I have to downgrade it for it to be viable for upload? Or is this viable already? ExoField (talk) 14:55, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @ExoField - I've uploaded the logo and added it to the article, you can see the file location here: File:Khyber_Medical_College_logo.jpg. I've uploaded this using the fair use provisions, see this for more information: WP:NONFREE. I used the "upload file" link on the left side of the page. It can only appear at the article and in only one instance. A bot will remove it if it used in other locations. Also a bot will downsize a fair use image if the file size is too large when uploaded. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:30, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much!! ExoField (talk) 02:21, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from TijgertjuhX69

Can iprotect my search and reading files so nobody can see which information im checking here like in private in browser — Preceding unsigned comment added by TijgertjuhX69 (talkcontribs) 10:22, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

@TijgertjuhX69: I'm not really sure about this question, it would probably be best to ask this at WP:TEAHOUSE. Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 12:04, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
@TijgertjuhX69 welcome to Teahouse! The Wikimedia Foundation takes as many measures possible to protect your anonymity. For technical reasons, IP address and other device metadata is logged (how all websites work), but very limited number of employees at Wikimedia Foundation can access what websites you visit. A few more volunteers can access such information (temporarily) when you make edits. You can read more at Wikimedia:Privacy policy. If you are concerned about Wikimedia Foundation having such information about your logging, you can install Tor and browse Wikipedia even more anonymously. You will not be able to edit while using a proxy or VPN however. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 14:08, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from ExoField (20:39, 9 January 2024)

Hello, can you please review the last 5-6 edits on Khyber Medical College, kindly, am I in the wrong? If so, why? And what should I improve? --ExoField (talk) 20:39, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @ExoField - first, don't be too discouraged, you've actually taken the right approach - asking questions of others when an edit is not accepted is really good practice. Second, I've had a quick look at some of your edits and it's important to understand the difference between information that is of encylopaedic interest and information which is trivial. So, in this case, almost every higher educational institution in the world will have some kind of residential college, and thus minor details (eg number of places) of an instutition's residential college are trivial. Whereas, encyclopaedic information would be, for example, a residential college that was the oldest in a country or the largest. Or information about the number of computers - every educational institution worldwide has computers, putting in information like that is not encyclpaedic and makes the article appear to be promotional. In general, I would recommend looking to add information which appears in sources which are independent of the subject you are writing about. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 07:14, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Ah, I see, I just couldn't differentiate between important information, but I think importance is relative. The reason I added the residential college because a lot of higher educational institutes here don't have their own accomodations, so it is a noteworthy point. Also what about the alumnus association, why was that removed? Very few medical schools have an alumnus association here (less than 10), this is definitely encyclopaedic information, no?
And I think the importance of some information varies from region to region, just as I mentioned about accomodation, in this country most schools/colleges don't have their own hostel system, a college having one means it's well established and has a history. And I don't think editors should straight up delete years worth of information, they should give a warning first (i.e citation needed, like how they do on other pages), this specifically made me very angry.
Your opinion on this, kindly.
Regards. ExoField (talk) 07:24, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Just to give an example, a few days ago, and about 10 minutes ago, I added a few unsourced changes, but an editor contacted me that I could add it back if I provide reliable sources. But this one editor on the page does not accept any change whatsoever, no matter the source. First he labels them as unsourced, but when I sourced them appropriately, he labelled them as promotional?
Again, your opinion on this. (Yes, I'm angry and rightfully so, he deleted information that has been unchanged for almost a decade.) ExoField (talk) 07:32, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @ExoField - just to respond to above and to quote from one of your edit summaries: "Here it is very important whether a medical school has an international presence or not." The main distinction with Wikipedia is that the information used needs to be supported by independent, reliable sources. Ideally, as an editor of Wikipedia our job is not to determine what information is important, rather the sources do that for us. In this case, you are using the Alumni Association's own website and you are making a decision that it is important. What we need is a source which is independent of the Alumni Association and Khyber Colledge writing about the Association - is this way, the source has made the decision that it is important to write about the Association and you would use that source to add information to the article. So it is not that importance differs from region to region (that is normal), but that wherever we are it is the seconary independent sources which determine what is important. Is that explanation helpful? Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 07:34, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, understood ExoField (talk) 07:38, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @ExoField - I'm leaving a message on the article's talk page, let's continue the coversation there. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 07:39, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from ExoField (15:02, 14 January 2024)

When to cite from primary sources and when to cite from secondary sources (secondary is a go to, yes?), are there any exceptions where you are allowed to cite from the primary source --ExoField (talk) 15:03, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi @ExoField - yes, in general the principle is use secondary sources and avoid primary ones. However, have a look at WP:PRIMARYNOTBAD; it is a case by case basis - for example, if one wanted to quote the date an organisation was founded, it would generally be acceptable to quote from the organisation itself, but there are circumstances where doing so (if the organisation was in dispute with another organisation over naming rights) might not be appropriate (see WP:PRIMARYCARE for more infor). What kind of information do you want to use? Regard, Goldsztajn (talk) 20:55, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
I see thank you.
General information about an institution that's probably not present anywhere else, i.e amount of inpatient wards, or the amount of members present in the organisation, books in the library, and so on. Most of these will probably not exceed more than one line on the Wikipedia page. ExoField (talk) 21:06, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @ExoField, it really depends. So, for example, just because information exists does not mean it should be inclued in an article. The problem with using primary sources is that it can create problems related to WP:UNDUE - the over-valuing of information not recognised as important by independent sources. So, using your example, the number of books in a library is not normally a relevant, unless for example it was the Library of Congress, which has one of the largest holdings in the world (and that would need to be sourced to a secondary source!). Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 21:15, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
I see, thank you, again. ExoField (talk) 21:18, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from GuyUser81 on 2029 in public domain (05:08, 29 January 2024)
