Hi. When you recently edited Teacher, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages NUT and ATL (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Sir John Gleed School[edit]

Please DO NOT add promotional material to the Sir John Gleed School article without proper sources. Wikipedia is not a brochure for the school, and should not be used to 'sell' the school unless independent sources can be found to back up these claims. Also, please do not add irrelevant information such as the school layout. Only material that should be in an encyclopedia should be included! Bleaney (talk) 19:06, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Wisbech, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Castle (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hi Fenlandier, are you familiar with the core policy that all content must be supported by WP:RELIABLE sources? Without them, it appears that almost everything you've added to the article in the last few days won't stay. Further, most of it appears to add non notable people, places and events to Wikipedia. Please provide inline sources--in the meantime I'll solicit further assistance before cleaning up the article. Thank you, 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 17:09, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've reverted to the last decently sourced version. Please don't continue to add unsourced content to Wikipedia articles. Especially if it includes the dates that box factories opened. 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 17:16, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I just thought I'd get in touch - on Wikipedia, one of the core policies is citing sources for where information has come from - this can be a website, a book, a newspaper, etc. I notice quite a lot of material you added to Wisbech, which must have taken some time, has already gone to waste because it was removed for not being referenced. I think if you're keen to help expand articles here, it's definitely worth taking a bit of time to find references for where information has come from. Otherwise, there's no way for readers to know if it's just something that's been made up. Thanks Bob talk 21:52, 23 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thanks for all your work on the Wisbech article so far. Hope you don't mind me sticking my nose in, but I've noticed you're adding a lot of lists or short facts and bibliographies to the page, and I wonder whether the next step might be to make it flow a bit more, with paragraphs that tell a bit of a story. For example, I was looking at the 'waterways' bit, and the business about the 'battle of the dams' is quite intriguing, but other than saying it happened, doesn't give a reason or background of what the dams were, or why there was a conflict - that's the sort of interesting fact that readers will be after.

I guess your extensive bibliography could be a great resource to find and cite facts. About 10 years ago, I got the article on Chatteris up to "good article" standard, which mostly involved adding paragraphs of referenced information that told the story of the town and about it as a place (its history, demographics, economy, politics, etc). If you have a look at Altrincham, that's a featured article about a UK market town, and you'll notice that it doesn't have many lists, it's mostly paragraphs. Hope that's some help - good luck with your research! Rob (talk) 00:40, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Fenlandier

Thank you for creating Master Grossmith.

User:Blythwood, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Pretty solid. Few tuneups I've made: as both books have been digitised, I've linked to them. I'm presuming William Robert was his genuine name, and 'Master' just a stage name, so I've put his real name first and "also known as" second, and also put in a redirect from "William Robert Grossmith". There's a BBC article (unfortunately unsigned) discussing a theatre poster of his, so I've cited it. It's best to check articles before publishing, and there were a few mistakes. You had "Goldsmith" instead of Grossmith a few times (which really gave me the heebie-jeebies that the article had got two different people mixed up–please try not to give new page reviewers heart attacks in future!) and it's best to link to the play not the person for Richard III. I see one book and the BBC source both say George Grossmith was his nephew? Might make sense to add that if so. And added a few categories, and put the book title in italics. Hope that all makes sense!

Richard Gypson[edit]

Hi, this article has a mistake and so I can't mark it as reviewed. You said in the dates of birth and death that he was born in 1811 and he died in 1853 but then the text says he was conducting research in 1855? And even if the dates 1811-1853 are correct they need sources. Blythwood (talk) 00:11, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A source contains an error which I hadnt spotted, I'll see if I can get the date of death by other means. Thanks. Fenlandier (talk) 08:58, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks. Also just to explain the edit I just made, the aim with Wikipedia categories is to add, and use, subcategories wherever needed to avoid categories that could grow very large just getting too bunged up to sort through effectively. So normally the category "Child actors", as it explains at the top of it, "should directly contain very few, if any, pages"–where an article is in a subcategory like "English male child actors" there's no need to put it in the bigger category. Blythwood (talk) 21:02, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

👍Thanks for taking the time to explain the reasoning. Fenlandier (talk) 21:13, 31 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You wrote: "They had at least two children Richard Shaftoe (b1794) and Thomas Shaftoe (1795-1795)." Do you mean that Thomas died as an infant, or is the death date an error? -- Ssilvers (talk) 05:18, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wisbech article shortened[edit]

Several editors have shortened the Wisbech by more than half. Content can be true - and referenced - yet not appropriate for an article about a place. David notMD (talk) 18:37, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I was not involved with this, but I took a look at what the editors did. Most of what was removed was either unreferenced or poorly referenced. Some of it involved statements like "Prince so-and-so visited Wisbech on x date." I agree that this sort of information is not of encyclopedic importance unless the prince did something of historic importance while he was in town, like, say, marry princess so-and-so. The fact that someone bought the castle doesn't belong in this article. It would belong in the castle's article. We should always consider whether a fact that we consider adding to an article is actually of encyclopedic importance to THAT article that you are considering adding it to. If not, perhaps it is noteworthy with respect to another article. See WP:NOT and WP:Noteworthy for more information. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:15, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I started off the paring down of Wisbech, as it was nearly as long (in bytes) as Nottingham. I understand wanting to have a public home for all the facts you have on Wisbech, but Wikipedia is not a web host. I do appreciate that your content was well sourced; however, if the town does not have all this material available on it own server, then the historical society ought to be the logical choice. A look at the Wikipedia articles for towns of Wisbech's size will give you an idea of what content is appropriate for an encyclopedia article about an English town.--Quisqualis (talk) 03:31, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
