Question about editing semi-protected[edit]

@Chewings72: I'm pretty new to the talk pages so can you help me clarify when is it appropriate to use the request to edit semi-protected template? The first time I used it on another page for a minor edit and it was approved, but then I read on Help:Talk pages that I should propose/suggest the edits first.
