Fair use rationale for Image:Handover16.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Handover16.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jackaranga 09:39, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

201 Penelope

I have reverted your addition of a lightcurve plot to the 201 Penelope article. This image is not useful as presently given: in particular the font size is far too small. I'm also not sure what it adds to the article, but the most important that it can't be read. Michaelbusch 02:12, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Commons info

Hi there, can I ask you to add a bit more info to this pic at Commons? Either a summary box or just the place (town, country) and date. I know this seems trivial, but I used to work in a museum archive with a wonderful collection of pioneering photographs - with infuriating, tantalising one-word descriptions! It's amazing the things a viewer 50 years hence will find interesting in a photo. JackyR | Talk 17:56, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Bootiful! Actually, I suffer from hyper-pedantry (or perhaps my friends suffer from it...), so I usually try to add a list of keywords under the summary box - bungalow, tin roof, corrugated roof, caravan, grass, daisies, suburbia.... This is AFAIK what proper picture libraries do (I was only a volunteer at the archive), because it makes images findable for uses you haven't predicted. But tho I'm not the only one to do this, it hasn't been discussed at Commons. :So depends how anal you are, really... :-) JackyR | Talk 20:25, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Is there a story behind your self-photo at commons:Image:Black eye.JPG? How did you fall six feet onto concrete? :) - Keith D. Tyler (AMA) 18:27, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I ran onto a balcony where there were some bedding (it was my grandparents motel), and tripped over them. There weren't enough railings, plus being a small boy, was able to fit through the gap. And down I went. Haven't suffered any ill effects of it. It is one of those fun stories to pull out. Evil Monkey - Hello 23:31, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
You were a cute kid, and I'm sorry for your accident, but using this image (a child) for the black eye article is not a good idea. As a parent, it's unsettling. Please ask the mods to delete your pic. Thanks. B 20:42, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Genesis Rock

Hi. If you are the person that uploaded the image of the Genesis Rock at the commons (and which is also at Moon rock), I'm pretty sure that this is the wrong photo. It is supposed to be sample number 15415, but this image shows 15195, and looks like a basalt. Could you look into this, and perhaps upload the correct photo if this is indeed not the right one? Thanks. Lunokhod 19:38, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

You are correct. Just had a look at where I got it from (Apollo Lunar Surface Journal), and the image I uploaded is sample number 15495. Not sure what is gone one, unless it was incorrectly labelled previously by NASA. I've uploaded the correct image. Evil Monkey - Hello 20:01, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi, sorry to revert your rewrite. I'm always reluctant to revert good-faith edits, but in this case I thought that, when inserted, the trivia broke up the flow of the article too much. I now see your links to trivia guidelines, and I'll give some thought to how a rewrite might be done better. Rocksong 22:46, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm currently doing some undergraduate research on NGC 2419, and got confused when I looked at list of globular clusters and saw that it said this cluster was in Puppis, not Lynx. Then I realised the problem was that it was listed with negative declination, not positive declination. I corrected the entry, but thought I let you know in case you wanted to check to see if there were any other sign problems with other entries. Evil Monkey - Hello 22:47, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Could you close a proposed merge?

Hi. I would like to ask a favor: Would it be possible for you to formally close the proposed merge that was discussed at Independent evidence for Apollo Moon landings? (The debate appears to have ended about a week ago.) The behaviour of some users on this topic is becoming more and more incivil, and I think that it is best that a neutral observer evaluate the arguements and make a final decision. Help with Image Deletion Proposal

Hi, since you're an administrator I was hoping you could help out. The image "Cow on pole with horns" [1] was nominated for deletion on March 28 and most found the image should be kept. The deletion process, however, is still said to be opened for deletion and the deletion discussion hasn't been closed yet by an administrator. I was hoping you could either close the discussion or know an admin who is in charge of image deletion discussions. I noticed a lot of the "old discussion" images are still open (neither deleted or marked as kept), although they have been there for well over 5 days (per Admin instructions). NZ Crown Copyright

Hi Evil, Having difficulty in pinning down anyone about what, if any, copyright applies to NZ postage stamps. Is/was the Post Office (part of the Crown) one of the government departments that doesn't enforce copyright? If it is, then it seems:

  • Over 100 years, OK, outside Crown Copyright.
  • Less than 100 years, a lot less certain. Basically it seems it's 50 years after the author's death. But how can one find out who engraved each stamp & when the engraver died? (If the author can't be found then the period is 50 years from publication) And, according to the government website [2] "Works of artistic craftsmanship industrially applied: Copyright protection lasts twenty-five years from the time the work is industrially applied". Could one argue that the printing of large numbers of copies of stamps is "industrially applied"? If so, then the period is 25 years.

Hope you are able to shed some light on this. Cheers GrahamBould 11:26, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I can't help you. A look on the New Zealand Post website doesn't seem to reveal anything regarding the copyright of the stamps themselves. I'm guessing (and I'm not a lawyer) that the "author" of stamps will be NZ Post since any artists will be working for them under some sort of contract. I agree that anything older than 100 years will be fair game. You may want to try contacting NZ Post to see what the situation is for older stamps. Or ones that they no longer are issuing. Notability of John W. Peoples, Jr.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on John W. Peoples, Jr., by Bamadude, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because John W. Peoples, Jr. seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting John W. Peoples, Jr., please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate John W. Peoples, Jr. itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 23:32, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Victoria Cross

Willy Apiata has became the first recipient of the Victoria Cross for New Zealand. This is technically a separate award from the Victoria Cross although it is identical in almost every way. As such i am wondering how best to describe Willy Apiata given that has technically won a separate award even though they are bracketed together. I am currently the nom for FA candidate Victoria Cross and i am wondering how to proceed. Do i update the number of holders since the Second World War. I am confident that my current course of action of not updating the number of recipients in the infobox is correct. Comments? Woodym555 18:10, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm not a medal expert at all, so I don't really know. On the one hand, the NZ VC is probably of exactly equal "ranking" as the "normal" VC, but as you say they are technically different awards. I wonder if a NZer can still receive the non-NZ VC? This doesn't really help the situation, but I would add some comments in the wikicode saying what is going on so that someone doesn't change it. List of controversial non-fiction books

Hi there, you may be right that it is a bit sloppy to just post names and leave it at that, but why is this such a problem? Isn't that how things are here on Wikipedia, that often people contribute small additions which others then carry on with? As you know, those red links are often the ones picked up on by people who happen to know something on the subect. No matter how small the additions are, you have removed other people's contributions. Is it your rule or a wikipedia rule that says that each entry must have a reason added? Skynyrd database massive removal

Hello, Just a word to understand why you have removed all the links I had edited on pages about a non-commercial site "www.southernrock.fr"? Was it because I was not registered as contributor and just identified as an I.P address? It was no spam at all! I'm registered on the french wikipedia version and I did not know that my login/password did not work on the other languages versions. Now, I'm registered. Is it better? I confirm that the site www.southernrock.fr is made by a journalist with no commercial purposes. It's a database with all information regarding LYNYRD SKYNYRD band and affiliates groups, complete discography, documents, etc. Thank you very much. Best Regards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ctribe94 (talkcontribs) 11:22, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

SKYNYRD site

Hello Evil Monkey, Thank you very much for your answer. Just to let you know that the link was dead for 24 hours because the official starting date is today and we had to fix some little bugs. Now, everything's OK and won't change (except updates). Second, just take few seconds to visit the site and you will understand why this would be a shame not to mention it as external link: there's no LYNYRD SKYNYRD site doing that kind of work in the world (good and original graphics, complete discographies, rarities, documents, a database without commercial purposes). It's a site for fans (made by a fan/journalist/documentalist). It's all I have to say. Just have a look. All information are in english and in french. Again, thank you very much for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ctribe94 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I was wondering if you would be able to tell me more about the 2 lists you created on the above page. I don't understand why there are 2 lists, if a rationale must be provided anyway. I thought that under fair-use I could take any image no matter what it's copyright status, and providing I could create a valid rationale I could use it in an article. I'm not sure I understand why this template exists if we must provide a fair-use rationale with it in any case, why not simply use the traditional copyrighted work templates. Also I find it a bit counter-productive that some NZ government sites allow me to use the images on wikipedia, but this wikipedia tag is forbidding me from doing so because it requires that I prove the material is irreplaceable. Did I misunderstand something ? I am thinking about nominating for deletion, but would first like your opinion. Thanks. Jackaranga 21:37, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

The image tag has changed substationally since it was created. I didn't realize that they were not allowing derivatives so it has been changed to a fair use tag. It probably should be deleted as it adds another layer of complexity to Wikipedia image tagging. The two lists are there because some govt departments have slightly different copyright notices. Some seem to allow commercial use, while others do not. Evil Monkey - Hello 21:54, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, thanks from a newbie

Hey, good read on my comments on Neal Armstrong. If only my grad school guys had read with such detail and common sense.

On the Aldrin "first" comment, should there be a "see also" with a cross-ref to Aldrin?

Should I edit the Aldrin article (which is woefully short, the poor bastard) with that info?

Thanks again.

Shlishke (talk) 03:38, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

No problem. Sometimes the original meaning of things can be lost in Wikipedia as many people copyedit (in good faith).
Perhaps there could be a footnote (done in the form <ref>Footnote text</ref> on the quote to clarify why the word "intentionally" is used and a mention of the what Aldrin said. Evil Monkey - Hello 09:05, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
