Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Ellacomm. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. Getting an Article off the ground[edit]

Hi Ellacomm,

Per your request I'll do my best to make the process of writing a Draft as straight-forward as possible. There is a lot to cover, however, so I apologize if this gets long-winded. Let's start from the top, with determining whether the subject is actually suitable for Wikipedia.

The Golden Rule[edit]

The Golden Rule states that "Articles generally require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic." Let's look at each part of this statement

Significant coverage
This is probably the most important part to get right. The number of sources will tell how "notable" someone is, or in other words "has anyone ever noticed this person?" Passing mentions (film/TV credits, "she worked here", etc) will not work. If we're looking for coverage of Amira Celon in our references, the sources should talk about Amira Celon. Has anyone written an in-depth biography or stated how her career started? Has she received any more than a passing mention? If the answers to those two questions are "yes" and "no", respectively, then we can move on to determining if those sources are reliable.
Reliable sources
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, but it's based on what other people have said. Thus, we need to make sure our sources have a high standard of quality. A blog written by some random guy isn't of the same quality as something submitted by an editor at the New York Times. So when we're looking for articles showing significant coverage, we want to focus on newspapers, magazines (online and offline), and websites that have a reputation for fact-checking and editorial oversight. As a note, places like IMDb are not considered reliable because they are user-created, much like Wikipedia.
Independent articles
If your mother were to write a newspaper article about you, it would be considered a primary source and therefore not independent. Why? Because your mother will automatically be biased simply because she's your mother. The same goes for your publisher, your agents, yourself (this includes interviews), etc. Basically, the sources you use in an article shouldn't be directly connected to you.

Writing an article[edit]

The first few paragraphs of an article, called the lead, is where the subject is introduced. Who is this person, what have they done, and why does anyone care? For example, the opening sentence for the Amira Celon draft could be "Amira Celon (born 19XX) is a psychic medium and internet personality." This immediately tells anyone who's visited the page who Celon is and what she does. The lead can be anything from a sentence to a few paragraphs long, depending on the overall length of the article.

After the lead comes any relevant information about the subject. Things that could be included are: birthplace, family, education, career(s), personal life, etc. All of this information should be written in paragraph form (instead of bulleted lists), and just about everything should be referenced to one of our reliable sources. If you go to WP:REFB there is a very straight-forward introduction to using the refToolbar (section 3.1) which is the easiest way I know of to add references.

At the end of the piece comes the references section. This is done by putting ==References==, followed on the next line by {{reflist}}, which will automatically list all of the references from the body of the text.

Summary[edit]

A good article about someone doesn't have to look super-fancy or contain every single piece of information possible. It just has to have facts about the person, backed up by reliable sources, and written in a way that makes sense and is easy to read.

As a final caveat, I should say that not everyone gets an article on Wikipedia. I have seen some editors try for months to get a draft accepted only to (finally) realize that the person/company they were trying to write about isn't considered notable. I am not saying that Amira Celon is not notable, I am just warning you that it is a possibility.
