Samos Island' Turkish name[edit]

I do not have my own strong views on the matter. Although I would rather have this an information included than not - the island was a part of the Ottoman Empire and is reasonably close to Turkey, thus it is quite possible that the name is relevant. I do not intend to force my opinion in anyway. What I have found usable is to semi-protection of articles if there is any edit conflict. It stops people from the temptation to use puppets. Happy editing Alex Bakharev 07:48, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Alex thank you for your response and all the useful information you provided me. Although I have been using Wikipedia for many years it is only recenlty that I decided to contribute to this great on-line resource. I will try my best to learn and adhere to the guidelines. Now regarding our argument on Samos Island. I kindly request that you reconsider ypour views for the following reasons:

- Samos was a semi-independent island primarily during the Ottoman Empire not the Turkish State.

- There were no Turkish people/minorities inhabiting the island at any point in history. There are no mosques or any other cultural buildings and artifacts of Turkish origin on the island of Samos.

- The Turkish name for Samos ("Sisam") is a modern invention and a paraphrase of the original and historic name. It has no significant historic value; since ancient times and even during Ottoman rule the island was widely known and refered to as Samos.

- I dont understand your argument about proximity to Turkey. Does that mean that I or any Greek have the right to edit in Wikipedia all Turkish cities and places along the coast of Asia Mianor with their original Greek names?!

- If you insist on including the Turkish name for Samos then at least this should be included at the paragraph where it refers to the Ottoman Empire. Even though this still wont make much sense since the vast majority of documents, maps and references of the time refer to the island as Samos.

- In very recent history there have been several significant claims and statements by members of the political and military establishment of Turkey regarding the sovereignty of a number of Greek Islands. So within this broader context placing a Turkish name on a prominent location regarding the actual historic name of a Greek Island is offensive to its Greek inhabitants and seems to be an extension of Turkish propaganda.

- I will put it again simply in another example: Say I am your friend, neigbour or even good relative then, do I have the right to call you a name other than your own?! More so do I have the right to change your name and do so in important, public documents? I cant stop the Turkish governement to call the island I was born and raised by other names in their own country. I find such stance foolish, since well before the time of Pythagoras and Aristarchos the mathematicians, Samos was known with this name and renowned for other cultural and historic facts such as the Temple of Hera, the Efpalineion tunnel, its famous muscat grapes and wine. (..by the way someone had misnamed in this same wikipedia page). But to state prominently any other names besides Samos on an encyclopedia that is after all refering to a Greek Island, is absurd and not fitting to an objective point of view. A good friend respects his friends personal choices, integrity and self-image. Efpalinos 09:16, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May I suggest [to cover every aspect] that you add a paragraph to your SAMOS page entering all the data you covered in your remarks [and then some] thus giving information about the historical changes from Greek to Ottoman to Greek again for the region where Samos is included. This additional information would surely satisfy (almost) everyone. zyclop —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zyclop (talkcontribs) 01:33, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

coordinates[edit]

I have added the coords to the island, also slightly reformatted the article.

Please check the interwikis, the island can be on the Greek Wikipedia Alex Bakharev 02:26, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
