List of Doctor Who serials

Hi Edokter. You are probably aware of the discussion that has been ongoing for quite some time about the List of Doctor Who serials page. Those of us left in the discussion feel we are coming to a consensus - we appear to have agreement on the direction of change - but the exact layout is still being worked on. However before we proceed wanted to get in touch with some more editors and commenters to make sure consensus has actually been reached - and if so hopefully gain further advice on the layout. Your input would be valued. Thank you. Dresken (talk) 21:55, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

I don't see anything close to a consensus. I would also oppose any splitting up the specials, as they form an integral part of the complete narrative of the show. The whole onset of this discussion is wrong; it was instigated because of wether THORS belonged to Series 9 or 10. Bottom line is: tyhey should not be split up. It would no longer be the list of serials/episodes. -- User:Edokter talk 20:35, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
I agree, bringing back people who had left the conversation has made it unsteady again - but that is partially why I asked them back - I was afraid a false consensus was forming among those left talking - and was not representative of the whole. I feel at least we have had some success in actually discussing the different options between sides. Thank you for taking a look. Dresken (talk) 05:21, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Pre Gadget Proposal Feedback

Hi Edokter, long time no type.

I've been developing a handy User Resource Manager which is nearly nice. I added it to user scripts a while back, and have recently improved it a lot, but am still in the process of tweaking and tidying. I think it's got merit as a potential Gadget, but before proposing it, I'd like some feedback from someone who understands it (without me having to explain), with an aim of fine tuning; I think it's the best thing EVAH, so am the worst person to judge whether it actually is.

Any chance you might take a gander when you have a chance? I'm a delicate little flower, so be kind; if you think it sucks, just say so; beating around the bush just snaps my twigs ;-) fredgandt 04:17, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

User:Discographer/sandbox

Hi, Edokter. Can you take a look at my sandbox page please, and scroll on down to 1990 and see why the references are not showing up, though they do show up if you go to "edit" and then hit "show preview". Maybe you can figure it out for me. Thanks! Best, --Discographer (talk) 01:19, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Discographer: The page is in Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded. This basically means that you've got too many templates; I suggest that you split the page down into smaller units: you could start off with separate pages for each thirty-year period, or perhaps one for each decade. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:18, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks User:Redrose64. I will split up my sandbox before March ends. Best, --Discographer (talk) 18:18, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

About the font stack for Latin script used by Wikipedia

What is the current font stack for Latin script used by Wikipedia? (Where do I look for this information?) I'm asking so I can look for the nicest integral symbols for intmath in all the allowable fonts, as you probably had figured out already. (This must have been done...) Thanks. — TentaclesTalk or mailto:Tentacles 23:21, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

We don't have a font stack; it's just sans-serif. We avoid specific fonts simply because they will not work on all platforms. The only exception being the font-family used for math, which is a Times-based stack with near-universal support. As for intmath symbols, the characters are only supported by those fonts with extended unicode coverage, which are far and few. Forcing a certain font is going to be counterproductive. -- User:Edokter talk 12:00, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Fun design projects

I don't suppose you have a little extra time on your hands?

I've partnered with User:Bfpage and User:WhisperToMe to improve the tiny Haitian Creole Wikipedia. One of its problems is that it needs a thorough overhaul to remove the ugly. The infoboxes are clunky (e.g., w:ht:Modèl:Mizisyen), the main page is impossible on a smartphone, and the text appearance needs attention.

It's a lot of work, and some of it needs to be done in Haitian Creole (e.g., parameters for the infoboxes). On the other hand, you'd have pretty much a free hand with the design.

What do you think? Are you willing to have a go at it? WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:54, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

WhatamIdoing, I'm a little busy in real life, and this does present a challenge due to language and time. But you can always ask about specific problems (like the font), and take it from there. -- User:Edokter talk 10:06, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
Here's a question for you: w:ht:Template:moun is Infobox person. I don't mind the colored border, but I do mind the text being squashed up against its left edge. What's the best/simplest solution? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:18, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
WhatamIdoing, easiest is to add some padding to the table. -- User:Edokter talk 19:50, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Would it ultimately be better to replace it wholesale with an (old, pre-Lua version of) infobox? WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:36, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I think it would. The current template is filled with obsolete attributes, which should be removed/replaced with CSS. -- User:Edokter talk 17:07, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Is this likely to mean that we need to update common.css? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:09, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Comic Sans on M10 engine

Hi Edokter, you removed my addition to the Comic Sans article, because of it being unsourced. Well i cited wikimedia's picture of an M10 engine (from the corresponding Sri Lanka Railways M10 article, where it can be clearly seen (i've seen the engine in person, it definitely is Comic Sans). We may discuss if the manufacturer used Comic Sans or an exact lookalike copy version of CS, or if this information is relevant. But i wouldn't call it unsourced... :-) --M01 (talk) 10:35, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

There are two problems. 1) It has to be cited to a third, independant source. 2) We don't list every use of Comic Sans. The first means that it has to be noted by a reputable source, making it a notable use. The second is that Comic Sans is widely used everywhere by many companies, so why is this one special? -- User:Edokter talk 10:42, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

ITN ongoing

Hi, when you implemented the new, easier footer for ITN, what was the intended functionality for when there were no Ongoing events, such as the current state? I seem to recall previously that we would switch to a right-justified More current events... linked to the Current events portal. Is this your recollection and/or intention? A hanging Ongoing events doesn't seem quite right, but it's been such a long while since we had nothing in the section. Stephen 01:03, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Stephen, it is supposed to happen only when both Current events and Recent deaths are empty. Then both are combined on one, right-aligned line. Splitting them up didn't seem like a good idea either. -- User:Edokter talk 10:50, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I just tested and note that behaviour on no entries. Having Ongoing events is a little misleading as the link is to the current events portal, which includes one-off as well as ongoing events. On the other hand, no one else had noticed or at least been moved to comment. Stephen 23:46, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Change at Template:Longitem

Hi Edokter, when you made this [1] change to Longitem, did you check that none of the transclusions of the template were in fact relying on the style syntax? I was pointed to the highly visible use instance at the WP:File Upload Wizard, which was suddenly found displaying gibberish because of your change. Since the documentation neither describes nor discourages either parameter syntax, what made you certain the form with the explicit parameter name is in fact "obligatory", and can we be certain this hasn't caused more undetected damage elsewhere? Fut.Perf. 09:34, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Update: I don't know how many editors ever relied on the style syntax, but the person who introduced it in 2014 apparently used it at least at – and that transcludes in such a complicated indirect way I really can't figure out what potential consequences it might have. Fut.Perf. 09:43, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
You just hit the core reason that user was banned from template space. -- User:Edokter talk 09:49, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
To add... if you see any more of his edits (adding a lot of "micro-styling" into style parameter), just remove them. It was a staple of his to style everything at a micro level to fit his screen best without regard for any other screen resolution. For historic reference: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive871#Request template namespace topic ban for Sardanaphalus. -- User:Edokter talk 09:57, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
(ec) It was the syntax of the template before Sardanaphalus changed it to not require the style= paramter name. That user has been banned over a year ago for messing up way too many templates in this manner. It caused many (if not all templates he edited) to be locked into a certain prarameter scheme. I spent over a year cleaning up that mess, and a still find remnants like this one. No, I did not bother to check if some pages actually used it, mainly to force this practice out; style parameters are traditionally never unnamed. In the case og longitem, it wasn't even documented until Sardanaphalus changed it. If there are special pages that relied on this, then I apologise... though I never expected this format to leak into special pages. Pleas notify me of any more glithes like this so I can clean up. -- User:Edokter talk 09:48, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

topicons

Hi Edokter, Looks like I just edit warred you on Template:Bot operator topicon - I really don't care how we can sort these things, as long as there is some way to do it, and it should be consistent across all the topicons. It looks like @Andy M. Wang: is working on these as well - is there a preferred standard (that also actually works)? — xaosflux Talk 16:01, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

@Xaosflux:, I'm in the middle of reverting my good faith edits to customize id. I think that was my fault to look look at how the top icon module code handles it. I'd like to remove id customization on Template:Bot operator topicon now, since it can also use number for sorting, as Edokter suggets. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 16:04, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Feel free to revert me - will there be an actually working standard when done? e.g. xaosflux Talk 16:06, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Yes. Though I'm not happy with auto-sort being forced down our throat, I resurected the |number= parameter to allow for custom sorting. I revereted the id hack because it would remove the current id in a topicon, so I pointed out the number parameter. (but 1 revert is hardly an edit war, is it?) -- User:Edokter talk 16:21, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
No indeed not, but I'm not one to just blindly revert templates normally and didn't want you to have the wrong impression. — xaosflux Talk 17:47, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Just tried |number=, and it doesn't actually work. I checked the module code, which suggests that it uses "icon_nr", "number", "id", "name", and "image" for sorting. If I'm using |number= incorrectly, let me know? My code is bascially , etc. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 16:25, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
(ec) The module is not in use. The numbers are relative, so all top icons should be numbered, ie. if AWB topicon is 3, there should also be a 1 and 2 numbered top icon. -- User:Edokter talk 16:32, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
I think it's because pretty much all the topicons don't actually pass |number= through to topicon. I don't have time to make this change to all the topicons right now. — Andy W. (talk ·ctb) 16:29, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Correct. One of the reasons I wanted auto sorting gone. I'll goo over all the top icons with AWB to add it. -- User:Edokter talk 16:32, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, please ping me when there is a working solution again - the template documentations may need updating as well. — xaosflux Talk 17:47, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Re: Your Edit on 10 Year Topicon

Hi Edokter! Regarding your edit on , did you change the default width to 24? Flash of content on watchlist

A major cause of the flash experience on the watchlist is due to phab:T42284 icw. the changed pages watchlist gadgets. I'm seeing that upon first load, I get the base style and my personal choice of green bullets. These are the <style> included version of the CSS. Then the JS loading arrives. First the base stylesheet, and then the green bullets stylesheet. Now because the stylesheets all use the same specificity, they all override each other in that order as well. So during page loading, I have a moment where the JS loaded CSS for the base style sheet is arriving, hiding the 'page updated since'-elements and thus causing a reflow, then the green bullet css arrives and shows it again. I propose we either move the base style sheet back into Common.css, or that we raise the specificity on the rules for the CSS green bullet and bold gadgets. And then let's pray that bug gets fixed already. :) —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:37, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

BTW. I used Chrome's filmstrip to find this, it's a really useful tool for this kind of analysis. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 08:39, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
I have been seeing the flash for some months now, ever since RL loading became asynchronous. I think moving the base style to Common.css (site) is the simplest option for now. BTW. di you mean Chrome's 'timeline' tab? I've never used that before. -- User:Edokter talk 12:08, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
Yes. since this year it has an option that also makes screenshots while you profile. It's really handy (though you have to google a bit to figure out how it works, since the ui for it is not ideal in my opinion). —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 18:17, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Watchlist problem

Hi, from searching around, it appears that you are the person to ask about this. For the last few days/week (multiple? month? Idk time flies), I've been getting a "Secure Connection Failed" error when I try to click "Mark all pages visited" on my watchlist. It doesn't happen every time, but it's more likely if the page has sat there for a while (e.g. if I've closed my laptop and come back to the page hours later). The best guess I have is that this change, which moved purging to the API, somehow caused this. It's not something pressing by any means because I just have to refresh the page to get rid of it, but it is mildly annoying, and any way you'd know of to get past it would be helpful. Thanks!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 02:24, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Dudemanfellabra: I think that this is part of a wider problem, see e.g. Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 146#Annoying "Secure connection failed", phab:T134869 and Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Not able to edit. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:09, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks for pointing that out. Since it had only happened to me on the watchlist, I assumed it was a watchlist-related problem. Glad to see that the problem will be fixed with FF47's release on June 7.--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 22:17, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

I'm aware that the old template supports a size parameter. When I edit the TFA subpages (which I do for most days, usually to add/replace the image and/or adjust its size), I generally mention only the outwardly visible changes in my edit summary.
At the same time, I routinely switch to the main page image template, even if no caption accompanies that day's image. This reduces the likelihood of something going wrong if and when someone decides to add a caption later.
If you feel that the raw markup is problematic, we could update the old template to support captions or create a new wrapper template. Note, however, that I recall no instances of the markup causing a problem at TFA in ten months of use. —David Levy 01:25, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

The whole thing is just inconsistent. Have a look at Template:Main page image/sandbox. I've incorporated the padding in there, so one can call and no raw markup is need at all for any section. -- User:Edokter talk 07:03, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

I completely agree with you. We do need somebody to be bold and make a change, as there's stalemate in many decision making processes on here. Wikipedia has long looked dated and amateurish. Something more along Wikiwand's style would look a lot better.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:18, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

The problem for a lot of us has been that Edokter has too often been one of the most immovable impediments to actually doing something about the problem of WP looking dated and amateurish (not programmatically in opposition to the idea, just usually unwilling to accept most steps in that direction for one niggling reason or another, and too often on basis of what WCAG wants versus what the actual W3 specs really say). I don't know anyone who thinks Edokter should quit Wikipedia forever, simply over being challenged on the level of control, and tooth-gnashing in defense of it, that the editor exerted over certain things. I'm sad to see a long-term and productive editor just leave entirely. But it was definitely time for him to let other people ever do anything with CSS on this site. I was on the verge of lodging an RFARB about this stonewalling behavior, after about a decade of gritting my teeth and just trying to work within but mostly having to work around Edokter's personal over-control of "everything CSS on Wikipedia", when someone beat me to it at ANI and obviated the ArbCom route.

I don't blame him for storming off. I left, angry and feeling unjustly treated myself, and stayed away for an entire year, other than to respond to a handful of things people e-mailed me directly about, but otherwise not even editing to fix a typo. The 99.9% break for a year was very useful, both for me and my life, and for WP in that I was a more useful Wikipedian when I came back. I hope Edokter has a great break and comes back to us, after however much time is needed to shake it off and reconsider what he wants to put into and get out of the project, and the subtle but crucial difference between stewardship and ownership.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  09:02, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Edokter. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Unblock tag not working?

Hi Edokter, I notice you've made several edits to the 'unblock' tag page...I've had difficulty getting the "reason given" section to work on my personal User page. Even copying and pasting the tag without modification does not seem to result in the "your reasons here" section appearing. Instead the tag always displays "no reasons given". (My reasons are still in the code for the tag on my page, but are not rendered.) Is there a chance you could help display my reasons given in the tag properly? Sorry to bother you with this. Thanks for your time. Ericmachmer (talk) 23:32, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Ericmachmer Edoktor retired last July. Now he did make two edits in October but it is likely that he won't see or respond to this post anytime soon. I would suggest that you ask your question at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). MarnetteD|Talk 23:39, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Template:V Merge discussion

Greetings Edokter, seeing as you have been heavily involved in editing on templates V and Navbar and you were also involved in the last discussion about merging these templates (in 2014) perhaps you'd like to contribute to the latest discussion? → Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2017_March_5#Template:V. Thank you. 80.12.85.225 (talk) 19:13, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Still alive

Just a shoutout to all my watchers/stalkers. I'm still alive. I thought I'd do little retrospect and explain a little what happened 18 months ago. At that time, I was under a lot of stress, even though I could not tell why. I had a steady job (still have), and no financial worries. I quit smoking two years prior. But I had health problems, and those reinforced my stress, which resulted into more problems. Just over a year ago, I finally found out I suffered from type 2 diabetes. Now, a year after that, I'm doing very well. The stress is gone and I can start enjoying life a bit more.

I don't know yet if I want to come back. I picked up some old hobbies to keep me busy. Plus I don't know how the community will react. But anyway, I'm still here. -- User:Edokter talk 20:48, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

@Edokter very good to know. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:07, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

The file File:Watchlist small c.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused Wikipedia screenshot.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 14:54, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how infobox ship is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
