Check out Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure. You might like it! -- Buster Seven Talk 04:56, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Attempt to respond to Buster7[edit]

@Buster7: No idea how to do this. Thanks for the welcome. I'm going to check out The Wikipedia Adventure because, obviously, I have nothing better to do. That's a joke. No, I'll check it out because I'm a pedantic pain in the ass and would love to expand my ability to edit and correct everyone around me. Best wishes, Dustmouse3

Hello there Dustmouse3,
If you want to reply to another user, you can either leave a message on their Talk page or you can Ping them by mentioning their username on your own talk page. This will notify them that you mentioned them somewhere. I added {{Ping|Buster7}} above for you to ping Buster7, in order to alert him to your message. Hey @Dustmouse3:. Welcome to Wikipedia. Good luck as you wonder around learning the ropes. If ever you need assistance, I'm only a "ping" away. Note:the ping only works if you sign using 4 ~'s. Buster Seven Talk 00:30, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My first ping[edit]

@Buster7:

I'm testing to see if I can actually ping someone. Thanks.

Dustmouse3 (talk) 01:35, 29 March 2017 (UTC) Dustmouse3[reply]

Nope. Sorry, @Dustmouse3:. It didn't work. The only reason I know about it is 'cause I have your talk page on my watchlist so I saw your edit summary about a ping and thought it might be to me. Try it again but without the spaces around the bar. Buster Seven Talk 05:38, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know what the problem is here, and it's not the spaces. When MediaWiki, the software that Wikipedia runs on, looks at a change to see if it should ping someone, it checks line by line for a link to a userpage (such as the one generated by {{ping}}) and your signature. If the link and the signature are on different lines, the ping won't work correctly.
On another note, I noticed that you had said that you said that you needed more help with images. One of the many things I do around here is work with images and files, so if you've got a question, just ask! --AntiCompositeNumber (Leave a message) 02:16, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@AntiCopositeNumber: Thank you for the offer. As soon as I have time I'm going to ask for help with images and other user page "decor," maybe this weekend. Dustmouse3 (talk) 01:31, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Dustmouse3[reply]

Custom user boxes[edit]

Hello Dustmouse3. I have noticed your question on the Tea House, and visited your user page, then saw your note about the lack of a user box that you'd like which doesn't exist. It is possible to create new user boxes in a few ways. The official ones are created from templates. For instance, {{User:UBX/Rome}} is a user template, which source code can be found at User:UBX/Rome. More official templates like {{user en}} substitute from Template:User. But it's also possible to simply use a little HTML. Here is a custom HTML userbox, which you can copy/paste from the source of this message. The advantage of direct HTML is that it does not depend on potentially unstandard templates which may eventually get modified or deleted. Of course, modify it as you wish. Enjoy, PaleoNeonate (talk) 01:19, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

fuc-2 This user can contribute with an intermediate level of Pulaar.

@PaleoNeonate: Thank you for the help, and the offer of more help!! Dustmouse3 (talk) 01:29, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Dustmouse3[reply]

If a ping falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it ....[edit]

@Buster7: Trying again!

Nope. I didn't hear a thing. WhY you ask? #1) It's Buster7....with a capital #2) You didn't sign it. Try again. Buster Seven Talk 02:47, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here's another ping[edit]

@Buster7: Dustmouse3 (talk) 03:15, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Dustmouse3[reply]

That one worked. Sorry for the delay in letting you know...I was out of town. Good Luck! Buster Seven Talk 20:59, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-editing[edit]

Hello again Dustmouse3. I was cleaning up my watchlist then noticed your user page was still there (because of the previous Tea house and userbox template interaction), but didn't remember why it was there. So by checking I noticed your new user page changes, with the note about grammar correction.

If this interests you, there is the WikiProject Wikipedia:WikiProject_Guild_of_Copy_Editors which is a lot about cleaning up, correcting and rephrasing sentences of articles previously tagged with a special category. They have instructions on that page, a list of members who subscribed, as well as a talk page to collaborate with other members of the project. They also have the special category Category:Wikipedia_articles_needing_copy_edit and other subcategories, to access articles which need copy-editing. It is also possible to tag articles needing corrections, so that they get added to that list.

Of course, noone is obliged to join a Wikiproject, and even once joined, noone is pressure to work more than they can; anyone can also leave a Wikiproject anytime. If this one does not interest you, there may be other interesting ones too, at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Directory.

I also noticed that you added a userbox about Wikipedia:WikiProject_Userboxes, but have not seen you in the member list of that project. This project is about creating new user boxes for others to use (it may be an opportunity to make your custom one public eventually).

Have a nice day, and happy editing, PaleoNeonate (talk) 05:50, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@PaleoNeonate: Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into it. I have definitely noticed pages that needed a little sprucing up! Dustmouse3 (talk) 15:54, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Dustmouse3[reply]
