clarification[edit]

What is being boycotted? I am confused on that point. ++Lar: t/c 05:53, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ramblings[edit]

What this boycott establishes quite nicely is that no one is interested in any of the areas you linked. This is proven by the amount of edits they have received compared to the many admin hopefuls out there. And this is one of the many reasons Gazimoff has started this review. To assess what we, as RfA regulars feel is most important and report it back to the community. It will show us what our common concerns are, assuming there is a pattern to our thoughts on the subject. So I ask all of the supporters here: why oppose something that cannot hurt and can only help? — MaggotSyn 12:18, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, and someone probably once said Nobody cares about your garden; leave those silly pea plants alone and join us, the regular scientists, in studying pangenes. Gregor Mendel didn't raise a fuss and died in obscurity. I'm a bit more ornery. DurovaCharge! 18:18, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Noted, duly. Although poor Mendel should have taken the advice. I so love picking out those peas from my cup o noodles. — MaggotSyn 16:12, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Coaching teams?[edit]

One thing that has occurred to me, and it is one of the reasons that I haven't tried to do any admin coaching, is that I know I am not fully conversant with all aspects of being an admin, and I don't want to mistakenly tell someone seeking advice from me to do something only to later find out I was wrong or that a better option with which I was not familiar was available. I think a lot of admins might be in basically the same situation. One way to potentially address this would be to create "teams" of admins to serve as coaches. If, as an example, an experienced mediator, proposer for deletion, page protector and editor of protected pages, etc., basically a group or "team" of admins who between them are at least familiar with all aspects of being an admin and thus better able to provide coaching, I'd probably be more willing to stick my neck out. Has anyone ever given any thought to creating a few "admin coaching teams" like that? John Carter (talk) 20:48, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to see a "best practices team" where people who are skilled in different areas of adminship explain what goes into each area. It's one thing to understand basic consensus, another thing to close a canvassed AFD. So a training manual would first explain the basics of an area, then the basic mechanics of administrating that area, then go into common administrative problems and solutions for that area. DurovaCharge! 21:13, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now thats something I can agree with. I've been thinking a lot about a manual for each area. Everything from blocking, to closing out XfDs. In fact, I was working on one about a month or so ago, but had it deleted. Take a look and see what I mean (I'm not the best writer, only warning you). — MaggotSyn 03:42, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bear in mind I don't have the ops to read deleted pages right now. :) Ideally a coaching manual would work like this:
  1. Set forth a list of admin responsibility areas, with a module for each area.
  2. For an area, describe the basics (what is vandalism, how to respond to vandalism).
  3. Describe the common gaming methods (block evasion, sleeper socks).
  4. Offer Q&A sessions and "field exercises" relevant to the area.
Sounds reasonable? DurovaCharge! 04:07, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am now convinced we are talking about two different things. How would this be different from the admin school? — MaggotSyn 06:09, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you need some help with it, swing by my talk. I'm not sure how much I can contribute, but I'm still willing. ^_^ — MaggotSyn 11:51, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mutually exclusive?[edit]

How are RFA review and RFA coaching mutually exclusive? How does RFA review threaten the process of selecting admin candidates? I feel like I'm missing the point despite reading through everything several times. I don't understand the point of a boycott. Hidden Glass 2 (talk) 04:42, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing short of boycott has gotten the community's attention. I've been beating this drum around town for a year. DurovaCharge! 04:46, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
