I stumbled across your work on George Turnbull through the link on Abbots Langley ~ thanks for leading me into some interesting stuff I'd never come across before. I hope you don't mind the changes I've made: I made George Turnbull a disambiguation page and renamed yours to a pithier George Turnbull (engineer), switched repeated refs to named references, and removed some accidental signatures from articles.

I load photos that I have taken and declare that they are available for anyone else to use worldwide but somehow they always seem to be rejected for copyright reasons. I have scanned this photo taken by Mary Lewis in 2002 of the painting of her son Michael Lewis and the 14 other young people killed in the arsonist attack on the backpackers' hostel in Childers, Australia. Deleted image

If you're referring to File:Childers backpackers fire painting numbered.jpg in your message on my talkpage, I was not the one who deleted it. I merely operate the computer program that cleaned up after User:Explicit deleted it.

If you look at the deletion history for that image, you'll find that it was deleted after this discussion. I don't have access to the OTRS system, but the emails you posted on my talkpage simply grant permission for the image to be used on Wikipedia, which is not the same thing as releasing the image into the public domain (what you claimed on the image description page). This discrepancy, and the fact that Wikipedia-only permission is not sufficient for an image to be used on Wikipedia, is why the image was deleted. --Carnildo (talk) 21:48, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments below. Notability: please note the London Daily Telegraph obituary that is already referenced in the article. Your major concern seems to be to attack notability even though there is an internationally respected source already posted. Please look at the obituary which was thoroughly reviewed by this reputable newspaper. The newspaper accepted the obituary because of the hundreds of thousands of African subsistence-farmers that had improved living standards because of David Gordon Hines and his team. I was very impressed when I interviewed him. Hello. I'm an image expert here on Wikipedia. I see you've been having problems with some of the images you've uploaded. The process can be quite byzantine, and some people can be rude; for that I apologize.

We have to be very careful (some would say paranoid) about copyright on Wikipedia, since we are such a prominent website and so liable to be sued. As a nonprofit, Wikipedia would soon be sued out of existence if we weren't overly cautious about copyright. It shouldn't lead to rudeness on our part, however. I wanted to thank you, sincerely, for the images you've uploaded, and try to help save the ones under discussion.

When you upload a photograph that you created yourself (such as File:Chew Magna WWII decoy pill box - 2.JPG), it's a relatively simple process. As the photographer, you hold the copyright, and you have the right to either release the image into the public domain or release it under a free license. When someone else created the photograph, however, things get more complicated. Even if you scan an old photograph you own, you don't hold the copyright on the image; the original photographer does. In some cases, the copyright will have expired on the old photograph. (This is why I changed the copyright tag on File:Doris Turnbull in a pram, Nowgong, Assam 1902.jpg and File:Joseph Cubitt (civil engineer).jpg, for instance.) In other cases, you may have inherited the copyright from a family member, and would therefore have the right to release it into the public domain: File:Ilaro Court - site of new garden 1925.jpg is like that. But in still other cases, the old photo might still be under copyright.

With all that in mind, do you know who created File:Lawrence Ogilvie on Bermuda-NY ship for a Cornell University 1923 conference.jpg, or if it's ever been published? Do you have any info on the photographers of File:Justin Ogilvie, northern Svalbard late 1970s.jpg, File:Department of Agriculture, Bermuda 1926.jpg, File:L Ogilvie lilies Bermuda 1926.jpg, File:Lawrence Ogilvie & Brian Mulligan, Long Ashton Research Station 1930.jpg, File:L O + mum 1911, 70 Gladstone Place, Aberdeen.jpg, File:Lawrence Ogilvie, Bermuda 1927.jpg, or File:Rosehill, Abbots Langley 1907.jpg? Do you know who the painter was for File:Ryujo 1870.jpg? Also, do you still have the brochures that File:Lowthorpe School 1920s main house.jpg, File:Lowthorpe School 1920s brochure.jpg, and File:IBM 1755 Operator Desk.jpg came from? Can you see if they had a © notice anywhere on the brochure?

As for File:Presentation gold-plated AO drill.jpg, I see that Roger Evely created the photo, so he holds the copyright. If he is willing to release the image into the public domain, then there is no problem; however, if he only wants to authorize Wikipedia to use the photo (but doesn't want to allow others to reuse it), then I'm afraid we can't accept the photo. We only accept "free" photos, meaning photos that anyone (not just Wikipedia) can reuse for any purpose (including modifications and commercial use). If he is willing to release the image under such a license, let me know and I'll start the process to get this image protected. If not, though, I'm afraid it will have to be deleted after all. (The case of File:ROCgroupphoto.jpg is similar.)

Thank you for your detailed reply. A few of these image I won't be able to save, since we don't have enough information about the original copyright holders. But for most others, they will be just fine. I have updated a few of the image description pages to better reflect your intentions. For example, please carefully check the text at File:Rosehill, Abbots Langley 1907.jpg... I stated there that "If copyright exists anywhere, the uploader (heir to the photographer) releases the photo into the public domain." Is this exactly correct, and does it reflect your wishes?

I was also able to restore File:Upstream on the Yangtze Gorge about 2004 before the dam.jpg and File:Lawrence and Duncan Ogilvie, Dundry 1947.jpg, moving them both to the Commons so that all Wikipedia projects can access them.

Finally, I would love to be able to keep File:Presentation gold-plated AO drill.jpg, but to do so, the Wikimedia Foundation will need concrete evidence that the copyright holder releases the image into the public domain. If you can convince the photographer to send an e-mail to permissions-enwikimedia.org, that would be perfect. The e-mail would have to include a link to the image in question -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Presentation_gold-plated_AO_drill.jpg -- and a statement that says something like "I am the photographer, and I release the image into the public domain". If you prefer, you could have the photographer e-mail you (or me) and then you (or I) could forward the e-mail on. Either way, that would work. If this doesn't happen, though, the image will probably get deleted, which would be a shame.

I declare that I invented and patented QuickTide 11 years ago and have waited for modifications to the article "Tide tables" for six years to reflect this new method of determining tidal information. I feel that the purpose of Wikipedia is to have up-to-date information: you and Wikipedia are clearly trying to prevent this. For instance, how can there be an illustration of a presumably copyright (California?) tide table on the page when you have deleted an illustration of a European one (QuickTide) for which I have the copyright and have authorised its diplay on Wikipedia? Thank you for your comments. I can only add that my father was born in Scotland and lived some 78 years of his life in his native Britain. In Bermuda, a British colony, he was employed in the 1920s for about 5 years by the British government as a plant pathologist. He was travelling (probably on a British ship) to New York paid by the British government to speak (at age 25) about his saving the then-vital Bermuda agricultural economy at a US academic conference. One can presume that he was photographed using his own camera by a European colleague with whom he was travelling (my father was a keen photographer). Hi, I replied to your posting on the file's talk page, but as this page has since been deleted so you may not have seen my reply. I referred to c:Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Art (copies of), which says:

• If the original artwork remains in copyright a license from the artist is nearly always needed. Mere physical ownership of an original artwork such as a painting does not confer ownership of the copyright: that remains with the artist.

If you take a photograph of a poster then the copyright on your photo is the same as the copyright on the poster (at least it is in the US where Wikipedia is hosted). If the poster was made in the late 60s then it would likely still be under copyright, and that copyright would be held by IBM. I assume IBM hasn't authorised you to release the poster under a free licence. Hut 8.5 21:41, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

I'm not being pedantic - as far as I'm aware citations such as yours simply aren't acceptable on Wikipedia, nor is original research allowed which appears to be the case here too. You will have noticed that I added a couple of reliable citations to that section, but I could not find one to support your claim that Bevin Boys received £240 per year plus education fees and it just isn't sufficient just to say in the citation that someone told you that's what happened - there needs to be a verifiable citation to support such claims. Many thanks for your note. I am completely confident that the gentleman Mr Jones (90-odd years old) did not lie about all this information. You will see that on 3 September at 19.05 I modified the text to " many Bevin Boys received" to make clear that far from all Bevin Boys received £240. You can refer now to the official Bristol City archive to determine this.

You may not be aware that in the UK there was until about ten years ago payment by the government of all university fees and a contribution towards living costs -- indeed I a 78-year-old had this paid by the government when I was at university 1960 to 1963.

In fact the grant to cover living expenses under the FETS scheme was means tested up to a maximum of £426, (the amount depended on your marital status, number of dependent children etc). I have modified the original sentence in the article and have provided a reference to reflect this information. At age 79, I have had many, many years experience of establishing the Wikipedia sources of information. I have done so to support this worthy theatre company in Hong Kong that improves the Cantonese/English-language skills and political situation in these difficult HK times (I live in England) – for this I have fully and carefully done so in and for the page, fully satisfying your requests:

The article has been moved to draftspace to allow the article to be worked on to meet those standards. As for your points above, 1) You adding a link in another article is not relevant. 2) the theatres own website is not significant coverage independent of the subject. 3) a website home page that does not mention the theatre is not a valid reference for anything - if it was the only reference needed anywhere would be www.google.com. I am confident that the British and other governments have encouraged and never disputed the Wikipedia inclusion of wartime medals. Please view the Wikipedia articles for instance of countries' supreme medals: the British medal Victoria Cross and the French medal Légion d'honneur. The 30,000 or so Bevin boys (teenage boys) were government-forced in wartime to do their wartime duty to mine coal for the armament factories.Duncanogi (talk) 07:18, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

I am reasonably confident of my ground. Most medals were established long enough ago for their designs to be out of copyright. The design of more modern medals such as the Queen's Volunteer Reserves Medal will be protected by copyright, and that article is illustrated by an image with a non-free media raionale (File:Qvrm.jpg). The circumstances of the Bevin boys do not affect the copyright position. For more information see c:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom. If you want to challenge my proposed deletion then you should delete the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice from the file page, as described above. We would then follow the Wikipedia:Files for discussion process. Good faith, but cringe inducing nevertheless. Clearly the image is of public interest and used only to illustrate the organization's intended purposes in a way that words alone could not convey. It's highly unlikely that its use here contravenes Wikipedia policy or any country's copyright laws. Might I suggest you work positively to find a way of actually keeping the image, instead of working to remove it - which would be to the detriment of the article. Thanks, I forgot to add that I scanned the neighbour's Bevin Boy's "badge". I little knew him and visited him a few weeks before he died (he was a teenager in WWII). I certainly do accept that some images can be far from relevant. But:

• Grandfather clock -- My suspicion is that few Warry grandfather clocks have survived -- for instance, I added Warry to the list of British clock makers. Somebody I met many years ago (I am 80 now) felt reasonably confident that the wooden "top" in the photo (I know extremely little about grandfather clocks) is a Warry top removed from a clock. I thought this would make a good photo if it included a child.
• Shoulder – I suggest the page also needs to have a picture of garment-covered shoulders, not just a bare shoulder and the inner parts of shoulders.

This photo and information is there because I had access to it from my father Lawrence Ogilvie who had an amazing plant pathology career that included saving Bermuda's 1920s economy that unusually entirely depended on agricultural exports of early vegetables and tons of lily bulbs from 110 fields by ship to New York before Bermuda's modern internationally-connected banking, and modern immense Bermuda tourism access by aeroplanes.
