NC city and county economy info[edit]

Stumbled across this a few days ago: Business North Carolina, a business magazine focused on NC. They do occasional recounting on the economies of certain counties (usually in tandem with a feature on specific development projects) and some their articles even include info on cities. Be forewarned, some their content is sponsored. I just dropped some info into the Yanceyville article with this source. Just use the search bar and relevant info will normally pop up. -Indy beetle (talk) 10:35, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Indy beetle Thanks for this reference. I think I'm going to add a reference bank to my user page so I don't forgot these sources and help others out as well. Have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 23:00, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Teamwork Barnstar
Thanks for sanding the edges on Robeson County, North Carolina. I've just nominated it for Good Article status. May it be the first of well, at least a few county GAns. Indy beetle (talk) 04:05, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Indy beetle Thank you for the Barnstar, glad to help with the project. DiscoA340 (talk) 16:35, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If Robeson County becomes a GA article, do you plan to work on Scotland County to get it GA level as well? DiscoA340 (talk) 16:40, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Depends, information on Scotland is less forthcoming than Robeson. A small history section is probably fine (I think most rural county's have "less" history than Robeson) but resolving the lack of clear info on politics and Geography might prove challenging. I will continue to work on it nonetheless. -Indy beetle (talk) 19:15, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Indy beetle That makes sense about the lack of information being a problem. I may be wrong here but if you did nominate it for GA status, it would be graded as a small-ish article not a large, wide-reaching article. You may want to use Harrison County, Indiana as a guide as it has about the same population and article size. In my opinion, you could probably merge a couple sections together to make the article look bigger (bullet points seem to be fine as long as they're cited). I'm sure that a lot of info about the government can found on their website and the politics sub-section could probably be fully merged into that as well. I would also surmise that a lot of sources that are used in Robeson's geography section could also be used as the two counties are relatively the same geographically. Thanks again for your work for Robeson County and I'd be happy to help with Scotland County if you decide to nominate it in the future. DiscoA340 (talk) 19:54, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well yes articles are usually judged relative to the amount of available source material, though I've been burned before. Sufficiently "broad" is more the issue than "big". The main thing is I just graduated from college today which means my excellent library access is going to be curtailed very soon, so it will be harder to get at the best sources. -Indy beetle (talk) 04:31, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Indy beetle Congratulations about graduating college! I don't know what the rules are for this but would they allow you to use their library if you said you use it for research (e.g. Wikipedia editing)? If not, you might be able to digitize the books you use the most before you lose access to the library (using a machine like this one if they have them). The state library and archives in Raleigh might also be another good place to look if all else fails. Still though, congratulations about graduating, have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 21:53, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would also say while that article you edited didn't become a GA article, it still includes a lot of information about him. At the end of the day, getting something to that level is a great accomplishment, it's about the information added which helps people the most. Smaller edits made like this one and images uploaded like this one while being small help to improve Wikipedia. Before we both started to edit the two pages, they both looked like this (Scotland) (Robeson). Even if both articles don't get promoted, I would certainly say the quality of both have improved and that is what's important at the end of the day. DiscoA340 (talk) 22:40, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well yes, at the end of the day green icon nothing more than a handful of pixels, but the info and photos are what people find useful. And yes, those articles are objectively better than what they were regardless of what laurels they collect. With regards to the library situation, my (former) university library is open to the general public during most daytime hours, but only students and staff have borrowing privileges. I plan on purchasing a "friend of the library" public sustainer annual membership which would give me book borrowing privileges. The main thing I lose is free JSTOR, PROQUEST access as well as access to a few other online databases. Thankfully, I have free newspaper.com access through the Wikimedia Library program and some other tricks up my sleeve. Also, I recall you once talking about creating a collection of good free to use sources on NC. You could add them here: Wikipedia:WikiProject North Carolina/Library. I've dropped in a few. -Indy beetle (talk) 05:08, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Indy beetle I'm glad that you were able find a solution about the library. I did make a small helpful website section on my user page but I didn't realize that WikiProject NC had a dedicated library section. I don't know if some of my website links could fit there but I'll try my best. You may already use Google Books but it might have some good references though it only shows you previews of some books. DiscoA340 (talk) 16:02, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Indy beetle I added some references to the library but I was wondering if you knew what the reuse policy was for the NCDOT. They have an archive which contains their aerial photography slides but it makes no mention that they cannot be reused for public use. The only thing I could find was this price list for high quality tiff files or large print versions (the versions on their website are lower quality jpeg files). I am hesitant to say they can be added to Wikimedia but they could be used for visual references which is why I added it. DiscoA340 (talk) 19:23, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't know about their typical archives, but what they post on their official Flickr at NCDOTcommunications is almost always freely licensed CC BY 2.0. That could be added to the list. -Indy beetle (talk) 20:33, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

At Kannapolis, North Carolina, I'm not sure why you moved the official website link below a link to a map. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:22, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Magnolia677 I was intending to give more weight to the wiki-affiliated site (OpenStreetMap) but I'm open to it being moved below. DiscoA340 (talk) 21:46, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all your edits. The official link is almost always first, with the sister projects to the right. It's not written in stone, but a few places state that the official link is the only link always permitted, so it's almost always first on city articles. But again, it's not written in stone, so your call. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:19, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnolia677 Many thanks, I'm nearly finished with said edits. My goal was to "beautify" the "External links" section for a few articles which had become overgrown with dead/promo links. Seals and Service Marks[edit]

We represent the Town of Huntersville as legal counsel in intellectual property matters and left a request on the article talk page to correct the following error that arose on September 14, 2022, by "adding seal." The righthand information box, immediately beneath the words Downtown Huntersville and the image of downtown, features the word Huntersville having the symbol/design of a capital letter H with a branch and leaves for the cross bar and the symbol/design of the capital letter H by itself having a branch and leaves for the cross bar. The capital letter H by itself having a branch and leaves for the cross bar is incorrectly labeled a "seal." Huntersville had not adopted this symbol/design of the capital letter H as an official municipal seal. Huntersville uses the capital letter H and design to identify Huntersville as the source of services provided by various town departments -- in other words, as a service mark. Please correct this error by labelling the symbol/design of the capital letter H by itself as a "service mark," not a "seal." The word Huntersville with the similar capital letter H is labelled a "logo," which is not incorrect, although it may be more convenient to identify both the single letter and design and the word and design as "service marks." Servicemarks (talk) 21:50, 10 March 2023 (UTC) Servicemarks (talk) 22:00, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Servicemarks Problem should be fixed now, sorry for any issues. DiscoA340 (talk) 22:48, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Correct me if I'm wrong but is this the Seal of Huntersville (found on "Annex-19-05-White-Farm-Estates-Annex-Website," page 5). DiscoA340 (talk) 00:26, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We have inquired pursuant to your question. Servicemarks (talk) 00:51, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Servicemarks Okay, thank you. DiscoA340 (talk) 00:59, 11 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We have confirmed that you have correctly identified the seal of Huntersville as the black and white image featuring Town of Huntersville at the top and North Carolina at the bottom beneath the date 1873. Please remove the label "seal" that is incorrectly placed beneath the capital letter H with a branch and leaves for the cross bar. Both the capital letter H and Design and the word Huntersville with the capital letter H with a branch and leaves for the cross bar are not seals but are trademarks and should be identified as such.
Thank you. Servicemarks (talk) 14:58, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Servicemarks I changed the layout of both images on Huntersville, North Carolina. The "H" logo has been switched with the official seal, does it look good to you? Thanks. DiscoA340 (talk) 20:38, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Interstate Highways[edit]

Hi, hope all is well. I wanted to ask you if you are sure "Interstate Highways" is always capitalized and never written in lowercase. For example: "There are many Interstate Highways in the U.S." Compared to: "There are many interstate highways in the U.S." I don't believe it's a proper noun unless a specific interstate highway is named e.g. "Interstate 81". Thanks. Peabodyb (talk) 14:51, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Peabodyb According to the FHWA, any words pertaining to the Interstate Highway System are capitalized (Interstates, Interstate Highway(s), etc...). I think it's the same for U.S. and State Highways (ex. U.S. Route 117/North Carolina Highway 109). Not 100% sure about the last two ones but that's how I've seen them written on Wikipedia and in real life. Thanks and have a good day! DiscoA340 (talk) 22:31, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. I think they are referencing proper noun usage there; if they feel "interstate highways" in the general sense should be capitalized, it may be a stylistic choice. Congress itself has written "interstate highways" when speaking generally: https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/Federal_Highway_Act.htm. We could say that both forms are correct based on these examples. Sometimes I wish English were more like German: all nouns are capitalized in Deutsch. Makes things easier. Have a great day as well and thanks so much for all your contributions! Peabodyb (talk) 11:28, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Peabodyb While it does seem there are multiple different interpretations, I generally add the official page title to the "See also" section (In this case, the original title is List of future Interstate Highways). Nevertheless, always glad to help, have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 20:30, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have found no evidence that Statesville has a flag but if you feel very strongly about the city adopting a new flag, you should go to a city council meeting and propose one. I promise you, if they adopt it, I or someone else will add it. In the meantime, you could try to improve the article by adding more information, pictures taken by you, etc... county courthouse problems[edit]

I have found nearly every county courthouse in the missing or updated needed section of your page. However, there are four counties that still have problems: Chatham, Clay, Currituck, and Lauren county. Currituck does have a new county courthouse but every image I've found of it is either copyrighted or can't be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The other 3 have the same county current courthouse as it appears in the infobox. I'm not sure if the county justice centers also count as a county courthouse for the infobox. If so, then most of these problems are solved and only Currituck County will be the one that needs to be fixed. Thank you and if you'd like to suggest me to edit other images/articles in the Carolinas, I'll be here to help. :) Cork12 04:31, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cork12 Thank you so much for finding all those County Courthouse pictures. To answer your question, justice centers are usually "deluxe" courthouses with multiple different organizations merged within them (Durham County and Dare County are examples). Is this image of the Currituck CC available to be used, otherwise it's all good. I also saw your edit summary in Wake County; I don't know if you wanted to add a collage to the infobox but I think it's possible using Template:Multiple image since county infobox templates don't have a multi-image function. If it isn't too much to ask, could you make a collage for Wilmington, North Carolina as well as Wake County, North Carolina and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina (if the template doesn't work, disregard the last two). If you ever need help with finding images to use and or you need taken, feel free to contact me anytime (I've got a whole stack of unuploaded pictures of Asheville if you need any). I can't thank you enough for your help! Have a great day!
P.S. If you ever come across a flag from one of these places online or in person, could you alert me to its location. According to Flags of the World, they exist, but I don't think they exist anywhere online (at this point, they might have been retired or discontinued from use).
P.S.S. Those collages are really great, thank you for making them. DiscoA340 (talk) 18:34, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Already finished Mecklenburg County. Next is Wake and Wilmington. Cork12 23:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All done with the collages! Hope this brings in some more attention to these cities/counties. I have a quick question though. I've been editing collages for many cities around the US, after did Nashville I noticed that there no page for the downtown of the city, which weird me out because it is one of the largest cities in the US, so I decided to create an article about Downtown Nashville. Is it ok if you help me with this draft? If not its ok and I'll keep helping you with other articles in North/South Carolina. Thank you! Cork12 01:49, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cork12 Sure, send me a link to the draft. What is it that you need help with? If you haven't already, you should look at Help:Your first article which might be helpful for you. As long as you cite your sources (Visual Editor has a good citation generator) and the article meets Wikipedia:Notability guidelines, then, I believe you'll have to submit it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation to be considered (at least for your first article). Have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 02:07, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Stokes County Flag.gif requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. NC county article captions[edit]

Then all 100 of those articles need to be edited. There's no good reason for those capitalizations--they aren't proper nouns. Rontrigger (talk) 18:38, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

To my best knowledge, the image caption and title on commons are the same (see: File:Map of Gaston County North Carolina With Municipal and Township Labels.PNG). Maybe someone could do an AWB run through and change each caption to "Map of municipalities and townships in the county" or "Municipalities and townships in the county" as it works for all of them. A message of comradery[edit]

DiscoA340,

I don't mean to step out of line here, and if you think the following does, then by all means please ignore it or outright decline, if you wish.

Anyways, there seem to be a pitiful few of us Wikipedia editors outright dedicated to improving coverage related to the state of North Carolina. I take great interest in this area, as you seem to as well. If you are ever in the Raleigh/Triangle area, I would like to invite you to schedule a coffee (or other beverage) meeting with you, at your convenience. I think it would be nice to speak with a fellow Wikipedia editor about our efforts to cover NC together, and of course I do mean this in a friendly and casual sense, not to circumvent Wikipedia's normal channels of communication, such as talk pages, or to make you uncomfortable. My "Email this user" function, if you visit my user page, is enabled if you wish to email me there. To reemphasize, if you do not wish to do this than by then please all means ignore or decline, but I extend the invitation to you nonetheless. -Indy beetle (talk) 03:47, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Indy beetle Hello,
I hope all is well. Thank you very much for the offer, I greatly appreciate it! While I would love accept your offer, I'm entering quite a busy part of the year for me and the rare times I do up to Raleigh (from Wilmington), I'm quite limited to a small time frame there. But maybe sometime in future though. I do agree that long-term Wikipedia editors for North Carolina are sometimes overlooked by the rest of the community due to how few of us there are. I manly started editing Wikipedia to add the 2020 census counts to county articles as well as update them; that then spurred into a more long-term care for county articles in NC (and now SC). But I do find it sad how little Wikiprojects are utilized and Wikiproject U.S. counties is basically abandoned now, though it's certainly not as bad as others. Otherwise, I don't regret much about Wikipedia and it has opened my eyes to new ideas/prospects (like photography). I do hope that the work done now will help people in future when they inevitably stumble across a North Carolinian county or city page. But thank you again for all you work done on NC county pages, especially with the Sandhill counties, hopefully the GA review for Robeson will start soon because I'm quite interested on how it turn out. Thanks again for your offer, hopefully, I can find time in future to follow through with it. Have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 02:23, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Greene County, NC[edit]

There are numerous problems with this edit. First of all, when you made the edit, Buck Newton was within days of assuming office as the state senator. Secondly, Newton replaced Toby Fitch; I'm not sure how you could get Toby Flinch from that name. It helps if you preview your edits before publishing them. And finally, it's not a minor edit. Please read WP:MINOR before marking an edit as minor. Thank you. Sundayclose (talk) 15:31, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Disco, In regard to your change. The heading should not be designated as "racial composition" since Hispanics are not a race. That is why I leave the explanation "Note: the US Census treats Hispanic/Latino as an ethnic category. This table excludes Latinos from the racial categories and assigns them to a separate category. Hispanics/Latinos may be of any race." in the heading. I am seeing a lot of editors who are assuming it means race and are making edits as such messing up the data i.e. racial data would include Latinos in each of the categories). It is best to keep it unhidden so as to avoid such unintentional but incorrect edits. cheers Patapsco913 (talk) 23:05, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I added a chart showing the true racial composition (which some well-meaning people will adjust the racial and ethnic chart as such). Patapsco913 (talk) 23:21, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted your edit for failure to engage. You are the first person in my 11 years of editing to archive a comment on their talk page rather than respond? Patapsco913 (talk) 01:21, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Patapsco913 My apologies, I didn't think there was anything left to discuss but I can see it was an oversight on my behalf.
If you think the two charts are necessary, then they should stay, but I'm concerned about two things. In a section for the 2020 census, why is the 2010 column visible first? 2020 is the most recent count, so it should be first in the column. Lastly, I don't understand why the note can't be a hidden one? It is unsightly and takes up a lot of space in the chart. I can't comment on editor behavior but they shouldn't be editing official data from the 2020 census, but, even if they still did, they should also be able to see a hidden efn note (in source mode at least).
I also noticed that there is a slight typo in the note you've written. Usually, "US" is usually written as "U.S." and the word "Census" isn't capitalized unless it is written as the full name (United States Census Bureau).
Again, sorry for the issue. Thanks and have a great day! DiscoA340 (talk) 01:42, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on State to State (808 State albums) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. 64.229.90.172 (talk) 22:08, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
