Also, you are still using one singular source. Am I wrong in suspecting you are involved in this site (as you seem so inclined to use only this site)? Greetings, I am a voluntary editor of Virtualology sites. I have spoken with Mr. Klos recently about utilizing his Appleton's content to add and improve biographies in Wikipedia since quite a bit of famousamericans.net text is in Wiki postings but do not cite Virtuaology as the source. Mr. Klos thought it was a good idea to add new information and where needed an entire biography for a missing historic figures in Wikipedia. My question simply is, If Mr. Klos agrees can these biographies be utlized to expand Wikipedia by adding missing biographies and thereby give your contributors a base to work from? Can this be done with a computer program rather then manually since there are approximately 25,000 biographies to review? Damslerset

Fine, keep your errors in history, I give-up. God forbid Wiki readers readers are educated that Hancock was not only President of the Continental Congress but President of the United States under its 1st US Constitution. As for Independence Hall, do you know why the government of the United States abandoned it as the seat of government? Do you have a clue? I bet you don't. I dare not add that to your precious fluff page on the Hall. For you, however, in 1783 the military mutinied and surrounded Independence Hall holding Elias Boudinot (President of the United States) hostage along with the entire government of the United States. The President called out the Pennsylvania militia to free them but they backed the mutineers and refused to show. It was future President of the United States, Artur St. Clair, who came to the rescue and finally freed them in negotiations. They vacated Independence Hall and resumed the seat of government in Nassau Hall Princeton never to return again. Now how does one tell this story or the FACT that 10 Presidents of the United States existed before George Washington without citing a source? There are so many errors in Wiki on the founding period it is ridiculous. So I start with the small stuff like acknowledging John Hancock for holding two Presidencies and cite a source to wake people up who may actually browse their precious Hancock county or Independence Hall that he held the two offices. You call it vandalism. I call it righting history and giving a great man his due as a founder of a nation that borne your right to censor readers of a county named after him that hHancock was once President of the United States in Congress Assembled.

WikiProject Resource Exchange[edit]

Why not post a bit of information about your site to the WikiProject Resource Exchange, and allow other editors to use it as needed? The old book that is behind the content of famousamericans.net certainly contains useful information. However, continuing to add direct copies of information and links to many Wikipedia articles yourself may end up getting you blocked even though you mean well. --Versa geek 02:02, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: President of the U nited States in Congress Assembled[edit]

Please look at the guidelines and policies on reliable sources and external links before adding what appear to be spam links to promote a book. Self published books are not generally considered reliable sources. You might also want to read up on spam and single purpose accounts.

I also strongly question using a book on John Hancock (biography) as a source for the name of various Hancock Counties in the US (a history of the county would be a much better source).

If you would like, I would be glad to ask for a third opinion on your edits inserting the President Who? link. Just let me know (we both have to agree to go to Third Opinion). Thanks, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 22:13, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

outside opinion on use of Virtualology/Appletons[edit]

according to the site, the revised biographies are arranged separately, as explained "If you would like to edit this biography please submit a rewritten biography in text form . If acceptable, the new biography will be published above the 19th Century Appleton's Cyclopedia Biography citing the volunteer editor." from, e.g. [1] However, I see no firm indication that this is in fact the case, and would like to see some examples of this. Ones directly from Appletons are not copyvios. Ones modified from Appleton's are copyvios, because the Virtualology site is copyrighted. Unfortunately, the original ones are also known not to be reliable or accurate.( It is additionally plagiarism to use them with just the tag at the bottom, without indicating that the entire article was copied and what the exact source is.) I therefore doubt that any material from this site can ever be incorporated in Wikipedia. If unmodified, they are not reliable. If modified, they are not public domain.

I furthermore do not think the material is always being added carefully. there was already a good article on Benjamin Alvord (mathematician) (1813-1884), using Appleton as well as other more authoritative sources. You added an article for his son, Benjamin Alford Jr., unfortunately called Benjamin Alvord (general) --unfortunately because the father was also a general--and copied the information from the bio of his parent as a direct cut and paste from the Appleton web site. (I deleted it as a duplicate, but I can make a copy available--actually I hardly need to, because it is an exact literal character-by-character copy of the one on your own web site [2] without any attempt whatsoever to modify it into the appropriate style for wikipedia--not even inverting the name from its "ALVORD, Benjamin," to what we would call "Benjamin Alvord." Not writing appropriately with respect to style, is a minor matter and easily fixable--though a nuisance if you intend to do many contributions. But you did not check to see that you were copy-pasting about the right person!

I think this casts doubt on all contributions derived from this source, and I urge you not to add further material until this has been worked out according to consensus. I apologize if this has sounded a little sharp, but I want to make certain that this gets clarified before things get more complicated. -- This has already been discussed at Wikipedia_talk:Copyright_problems#Virtualology and might best be continued there.
