How to alert other editors[edit]

Hello! I saw your question at the Teahouse. Here is a small guide on how to communicate with other on the WP.

When someone is posting on your talk page you get an automatic notification. That notification is a red square followed by a long yellow box (for most browsers and settings). In all other cases you have to alert the other editor in some way, either by "ping" or by mentioning them in a link. This will result in a just the red box notification on that users pages. So even if you respond on your talk page you still have to alert the editor you are addressing. If you want to get hold of me you write {{ping|W.carter}} resulting in @W.carter: or [[User:W.carter|W.carter]] resulting in W.carter and sign with the four "squiggles" ~~~~ at the end and hit "Save". There are some more, but these are the basics. And when you ask something on someone's talk page, you also create a new section so your question don't get entangled in some other conversation. If you are having a conversation with another user on some page, it is also customary to add that page to your Watchlist in case someone in the discussion forgets to alert.

The policy is to leave an answer on the same page as the question, keep the conversation intact unless there is some reason for moving it elsewhere. Like complicated questions at the Teahouse can be continued on the appropriate talk page. Best, w.carter-Talk 18:42, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

About all your pages[edit]

Hi again! I took a look and I saw that you have created very many sandboxes and most of them does nor seem to have anything to do with the Wikipedia, like political discussions, SimCity, your website, etc. You might have made the very common mistake of thinking that the WP is a sort of social forum, which it is not. The sandboxes are for you to use when you create different articles and contribute to building the Wikipedia. The infoboxes you were talking about at the Teahouse are only to be used in articles, not as some sort of headers in your own user space. I think it would be good if you read this page: Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. You should also ask for some of your sandboxes to be removed. You can keep a couple in which you can start creating articles, and maybe later when you have lots of articles going on you could add one or two.

If you what to express who you are and what you intend to do here at the WP, you can do so on your user page. Things like your e-mail is not the first thing that should be posted there. Here is a small guide on how to make it more your own. You can start by looking at the userpages of some other editors.

For making your user page look nice, see: Wikipedia:User page design center. You can also "clone/borrow/steal" the code from someone else's user page. Just ensure that you change it enough that it does not look like you are trying to impersonate the other user. Wikipedia:User pages is a good guide as to what kind of things are appropriate in user space. And when you use the work someone else has created, in the edit summary please attribute the work to them by naming the user you copied the content from. If you want to add userboxes you can start here: Wikipedia:Userboxes. There are also many, many customized userboxes floating around on user pages in the Wikipedia, if you find one you fancy just copy the code from the page. If you are further interested in defining yourself and your style there is also the Wikipedia fauna. Best, w.carter-Talk 18:56, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removing infoboxes[edit]

I see you're mass-removing "former country" infoboxes, claiming the subject is not a country. First off, I don't think anyone is claiming it to currently be a country. Secondly, some infoboxes are intended for something else but work fine for our purposes. That may be the case with these articles. My recommendation is to halt mass-removing them and take a moment to discuss it first. Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 18:08, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why some infoboxes are removed like Nationalist government but other pages of former governments still have infoboxes as former country infoboxes? Dadapotato (talk) 18:13, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Again, don't take the name of the infobox literally. An example is we sometimes use {{Infobox restaurant}} for articles on pubs and bars, because it has the fields we want. Is the content inside of the infoboxes you're removing inaccurate? Maybe you can correct those inaccuracies, rather than remove the infobox altogether which has value in summarizing the key facts of the article. — MusikAnimal talk 18:26, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
