Westall painting[edit]

Hi David, I have been examining the railway history of Battersea, which brought to my attention the painting by Robert Westall of Battersea Fields 'from Lavender Hill'. I note that it may be the picture also entitled 'London from Pavilion Place, Battersea Fields'. Comparing the picture with the 1852 Davies map, it seemed to me that the viewpoint was probably in Battersea New Town, near where Stewart's Lane crosses Battersea Road.

On the 1874 (surveyed 1869) OS Town plan, it shows a row of houses at this position called 'Pavilion Terrace'. And a cross-check of the current state of that location, now called 1 Bradmead, using Google Street View shows a pub called The Pavilion.

If you concur, I shall change the annotations for the Westall painting to indicate the more accurate viewpoint. -- Verbarson  talkedits 23:32, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
