Behold: Nevermind. Right now I've completely restructured the article, added a "Background" section, and filled out the "Recording" section. I've got a few more things to add to "Recording" so that'll be my focus for the time being. I think "Background" could be better, but I just wanted to get the main points written down. Obviously we need more info on what happened after the album was released. I'm not sure if you have any sources I don't (I own Come As You Are, the Classic Albums DVD, and a bunch of Guitar World issues that talk about the band) so let me know if there anything cool you have to add. Just remember, when using American grammar in Doolittle, punctuation always goes inside of quotes. I can undertstand it can be a bit of a habit to break (oddly enough, I'm American yet if I'm not writting anything that's going to be copyedited I like to leave my punctuation on the outside of quotes for purely aesthetic reasons). In a 20th anniversary interview for Spin, an interviewer asks Robert Smith of The Cure "What music has most excited you during the past 20 years?" to which Robert Smith responded "Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies." (Spitz, Marc. "Robert Smith." Spin. November 2005) If you want to include that bit in the "Legacy" section go ahead; I couldn't find an opportune area to place it. While searching for "Bam Thwok" reviews on Google, I found this article: [1]. I find it amusing because I was at the actual Pixies concert that they reference in the first two paragraphs. I actually thought they messed up intentionally as an excuse to throw out some witty stage banter. Everyone in the audience was yelling at them to keep on playing. I was looking at "Teen Spirit" on AcclaimedMusic.net right now. What do you think about adding one of those charts like you've added at Surfer Rosa? I think it might be useful, but given the number of lists, it might be unwieldy. Possibly more important is that according to the site's ranking system "Smells like Teen Spirit" is the fourth-most acclaimed song ever. Now that's insane. WesleyDodds 12:40, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Would you be able to add a screencap of the "Teen Spirit" music video to the "Music video" section? Preferrably a scene worth commenting on, like the crowd dismantling the set and the band trashing their gear. I asked another user to grab an image, but I'm not sure he'll be able to do it. Aside from that, I'm waiting for a clarification on a music sample question (whether or not we can include clips of both the studio version and the Wishkah version of "Teen Spirit") and clarification on a source (I checked out the appropriate book and the text doesn't mention what is cited, but the original editor did cite from a later edition of the book). Could you replace the current live sample of the song with the studio version? At first I was thinking both versions could be uploaded on Wikipedia, but i'm not sure how fair use works in regards to that, and having the original version of the song seems vastly more important (I doubt any one's looking for a clip of the Wishkah version. Since the song's five minutes, we can actually highlight the dynamics in the song. With 30 seconds a soundclip should be able to cover the end of the verse, the prechorus, and part of the chorus. Another option is to cover the intro and the beginning of the first verse. WesleyDodds 11:47, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Bam Thwok

Shucks, thanks, though I still haven't learned to spell. Your cranking out great articles lately, its heart warming to see so many Pixies FAs! Just two things on the Bam Thwok article: the sentence "Bam Thwok" was recorded in a Dreamworks-funded demo session, funded by" is incomplete; and the Horhaus, listentome.net, and Hannah Harper refs are not WP:RS - the first two are blogs, the last is a user contributed review. Kurt Cobain has been sitting at GA forever (and quite frankly the article needs some reworking), and I put Nevermind more or less on hold right now because I figured I might as well make SLTS FA first. Those are what I think are the main Nirvana pages to consider working on. There's always In Utero, and the other band members of course. Personally I've found I really don't care to work on band member pages. After finishing up The Smashing Pumpkins I had plenty of sources with which to add to Billy Corgan. I started working on it, but quickly got bored and gave up. Anyways, good luck on all that! WesleyDodds 07:45, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Music sources

You might want to post the magazine issue details on both the Alternative Wikiproject and main Music Wikiproject source list pages; I purposefully listed only the articles in each magazine issue relevant to alternative rock, thus excluding hip-hop, pop, and metal-related features, among other genres. I can fill out the articles information for the issues I own for the main Music Wikiproject later, but I think the more specific listings would still be helpful on the Alternative WikiProject source list, especially since people there might be looking for smaller pieces on particular bands within the project's scope. Oh, and I can add details from the Spin "100 greatest albums" feature on Surfer Rosa and Doolittle if you think you can find a place for them. One bit I thought might be worthwhile but I had trouble placing in the Doolittle article was:

I haven't seen anything that mentions the "Gigantic" deal. I'll add some more stuff from the Spin top 100 list soon. There's a quote in the Surfer Rosa entry from Frank Black that might be useful where he says "I had gotten kind of obsessed with songs that don't ever change their chord progressions, like 'Roadrunner' by the Modern Lovers [. . .] When you learn things can be simple, it's kind of an epiphany." A thought occured to me: do you own this DVD? I didn't see it cited in the Pixies articles. Aside from containing all the videos, it also contains a documentary on the band. Very useful, as among other things you see Frank Black discussing the band's history while driving around as well as hear praise directly from people like David Bowie, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, and others. Hey there. Got your message and I looked at the page. It seems to me though that you have nothing but print sources listed there. I know a good source that isn't print, but I don't know how to add it, you may have heard of it. It's a radio series carried on CFNY-FM called The Ongoing History of New Music, hosted by Alan Cross. It's been running since 1993, and there's an online library of nearly 200 of the episodes. the duke 3 were never convicted either, but damn are they sure worthy of an article. If it turns out that she is found innocent, it can be altered to reflect that decision. The fajitagate scandal never made it to trial and it has an article. The whole point is i found out of this from reading the paper, off of yahoo news, a global portal with millions of readers. Trams in Adelaide and the path to FA

Hi CloudNine, in short yes and hopefully within the next few weeks. I've been deliberately not editing it or looking at it to gain what I've seen called "strategic distance". Then I can the look at it with fresher eyes, particularly for style and flow. I would love your help on this one as I do tend to salt-and-pepper puncutation and construct some very odd sentences. Pearl Jam

I've been busy the last few days, but in the next two days I plan to sit down and completely fill out and cite the history section, then moving to the musical characteristics section. My high ambition it to have it up for GA nomination by Wednesday or Thursday, which I think is doable given how long it took me to revamp "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for GA nomination. I'll still be busy until tomorrow, but if you want to help citing stuff one of the citations, a link to the Rolling Stone article "Five Against the World", has a pretty thorough history of the band up till 1993. I also think we should take out the paragraph about Kurt Cobain's death; interesting, sure, but really has little to do with Pearl Jam. Also, can you see if you find the 1993 Time feature that the cover used on the page comes from? It's not in the Time.com database right now. WesleyDodds 21:47, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Go ahead and go through Kurt Cobain and (quite boldly) tear out whatever you deem trivial and/or unnecessary (particularly in the early years section) and add cite/fact tags where need be; I'll take care of inserting citations. What are your thoughts on the "suicide dispute" section? To me, that's the most problematic part of the article, so we'll have to work out a proposal for it that we'll then have to post on the article talk page since it causes so much debate there. Citing TV documentaries is fine. I thought about splitting out the suicide dispute into another article for a while since there is so much info, but I'm ultimately against it since then such an article would effectively serve as a POV fork. I think was needs to be done is emphasis individuals have their own theories, and not detail what their theories are. WesleyDodds 23:58, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

As for sexuality: it's always struck me as "one of those things Kurt says in interviews", up there with sleeping under the bridge and saying Nevermind sounds like a Motley Crue record. It doesn't need its own section. It's ultimately not all that important in regards to his own sexuality; what's important about it is what it says about his political and social beliefs. Heads up on technology

Hi. I'm working on what may end up being a full rewrite of the article, and you seem to be its most active steward. I'd like to sound out your views on the changes I intend to make so that we can avoid some potential battles over its content.

My work is strictly at an outline level for now; I have to do a lot of research before I can add proper references. However, the main thrust of what I'd like to do is put a much stronger emphasis on the interrelation between the development of human society and technology throughout the article. I think this is the "big story" of technology: agriculture brought about cities; cities brought about complex societies (and writing, among other things); printing spurred the Renaissance; etc. This should not be confused with the "technology and society" stuff that you just removed (which was rambling, unreferenced, and fixated on modern society).

I don't intend to turn the article into a history of technology either, although the story of technology is bound up in its history. I hope to gain in you a co-author of an article that desperately needs scholarly attention. --Father Goose 19:49, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

The History section's good, though it's probably too long, considering 9 paragraphs only brings us up to 1 CE. History of technology can take up the overflow. That article could use better prose anyway; it's rather list-y.

Here's my working outline as it stands (the text that goes with it is mostly notes so far):

Deleted clips

I think all the clips that were deleted were uploaded by the same user (for example, all the Oasis soundclips were deleted, and those were all uploaded because I asked someone to maybe around a year ago). Pearl Jam

I'm willing to help you with Pearl Jam in a supporting role. I've found that working on articles to get them to GA or FA status, I'm very meticulous and slow, and I rewrite my prose several times until I find something I like because my inital attempts can be lacking to my tastes. You work much faster and write more concisely. Also, I don't own any Pearl Jam albums between Vitalogy and Pearl Jam, so we would definitely need to work with others who are more familiar with those works. If you want to take care of the writing and fixing the citations (missing retrieval dates and all) I can look up more references online and possibly in print. The Legacy and Musical Style sections are always the hardest and take the longest because we have to find all these disparate comments by people, but I'll see what I can do. If you want, we can post relevant quotes and weblinks on a temp page or something and then figure out how to work them into the article.

As for "Monkey Gone to Heaven", talk about the basic, obvious things that don't need citation: the key, the differences between sections, the fact that you can hear Kim Deal doing backing vocals, the guitar solo, Black Francis starts screaming when he says "And God is seven!", etc. I think I read an analysis somewhere about the lyrics, particularly the counting part. Logo

How can I criticize the logo in the article? I know how it was made, why, etc... But, where would I? I also have a source. Xihix 17:50, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

I know what you mean, but the logo is largely recognized as the Red Hot Chili Peppers logo. Even without the wording, many people recognize the red or black asterisk as the band. It's on the drum bass of the band. It's on the official t shirts. I don't think it should have a separate section for it, but it should be mentioned somewhere in the article. Maybe I didn't mention them, but AC/DC, The Sex Pistols, and Slayer, all FEATURED ARTICLES, have their band logo in the userbox. Now, good articles that have their logo: Artic Monkeys, Butthole Surfers, Evanescence, Kiss, Nine Inch Nails, Switchfoot, and Tenacious D. So... All these are godlike articles, Wikipedia-wise, and they all have their logos. So... Why not Red Hot Chili Peppers? Xihix 18:28, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
