Gun politics in Australia[edit]

Good work! This is a long shot but since I gather you're involved in anti-gun control lobbying I don't suppose by any chance you'd have a copy of any of the government advertising for the national gun buybacks? It would be great to have a scanned image as an illustration of the article. Also if you had an photos from protests etc they'd fit in well too. --Russell E 12:01, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Russell. I don't have either of those. There was a Govt website 'australiangunbuyback.gov.au' which was up for a LONG time. It was mostly text, so the Wayback Machine should have it all. The SSAA research team (eg Paul Peake) would have some, I am told they have an extensive clipping database.

For demos, I had some photos from the 2002 demo in Perth I will look for. The flak jacket would be a beaty, but the photocopy I have is a flat and awful image. It is in that article 'spinning a tale'. ChrisPer 02:59, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anti-Gun Lobby in Australia Query[edit]

You're a fairly knowledgeable chap regarding all this... Has anyone heard from the NCGC or someone in Gun Control Australia besides John Crook for a while? I'm doing a bit of research into the influence anti-gun organisations have in the Australian media and I've been unable to find any contact details at all for the NCGC, and the only name I've seen in connection with GCA of late is John Crook. There used to be a national Spokesperson by the name of Randy Marshall, but he doesn't appear to have commented on their behalf since late 2002, which seems to be pretty strongly indicating that the dedicated anti-gun lobby in Australia has less than half a dozen card-carrying members... which does raise some interesting questions on how come their views are so widely reported in Australian media. Wheelock[edit]

Thanks for the kind words. The article badly needed a pic, without which the explanation of the workings is very complicated indeed! The weapon in question is my own, also illustrated at the top of the article. Those are the only photos I took, the object being to illustrate the various parts of the lock. Are you making a wheellock? I made one once, from plans - took me years of filing and hacking away in a cupboard, but very satisfying. I really wanted to fire a wheellock, but of course didn't have one at my disposal, and anyway you wouldn't want to fire an antique one. Mine worked, but not that well! I used the Lauber book to make my wheellock. Your puffer project would certainly look much nicer. The project taught me a lot about metalworking. I only had a hacksaw, files, a calorgas blowtorch and a small hobby lathe. I had to borrow oxyacetylene equipment to perform any welding on the lockplate, which drew the heat away from the bit I wanted to weld with alarming efficiency. And I also had to use the oxyacetylene for tempering the mainspring, which worked first time and is still fine! The small springs were fun to make and temper, and the butane blowtorch was sufficient for these. Of course, machining the parts is hardly the same as forging them, and gives the lock a very modern, crisp look compared to the original ones unfortunately. I bought the barrel from Dixie Gun Works, and profiled it exactly as you did. I'd love to see the Leonardo paper - I refuse to buy from JSTOR who, although tantalising, annoy me with their damn charges... Best of luck with your wheellock and I hope it's a roaring success! Thats OK, I agree with that action, the version I attacked was pathetically bad due to claim and counter-claim stats which don't have aplce in a tiny overview of the issue. Apologies I should have done the full job. HOWEVER those events are not 'my interpretation' but reflect knowledge of the subject. Most of what I put in is referenced at Gun politics in Australia.
