Basque people

I dunno if you are interested in/have knowledge of the topic, but there seems to be some kinda dustup going on over at Talk:Basque people. User:A R King is involved, and he seems like a steady hand to me. I've already told jmabel, but if you know anyone else who might wanna be involved, send 'em thataways. Ref conv

Sorry for the downtime. References converter is now back up and running. About a week ago the hard drive in my server crashed. Luckily it stayed together long enough to allow me to pull all the data off onto a new hard drive, but I still had to go through the process of installing Linux on the new hard drive, installing all the necessary programs, and loading in all of the old data from the server. I got all of my essential services up within two days (CVS, Apache, Wiki), but I kind of forgot about web scripts, which I finally got around to fixing today. Per recent discussions, the way in which Persondata is viewed by Wikipedia editors has changed. In order to continue viewing Persondata in Wikipedia articles, please edit your user CSS file to display table.persondata rather than table.metadata. Why, thanks for the kind words, Ling.Nut and LessHeard. Unfortunately, after about six months of waiting this article came up unexpectedly on the main page during the two weeks I've been essentially offline, and so I had little time to do other than note it had appeared. I must say I didn't expect it to receive quite the attention it seemed to, and while there were some, doubtless generally justified, criticisms, it seems to have emerged through the scrutiny intact, actually probably in better shape overall.--cjllw | TALK 08:14, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification, Ling.Nut. I'm glad to see that Joe will still be around in some capacity- he's done more than his fair share in trying to keep the mechanics of this place running smoothly, so I don't begrudge his taking time out to refocus on article writing- which, after all, is the reason we're (supposed to be) here! It seems I've stumbled into a culture war of sorts. It's deletionists v. inclusionists (a familiar battle), but also many-inline-cites (as in, me) vs. few-inline-cites (apparently, jmabel.. and others). Kinda big-endians v. little-endians, and people are bent out of shape enough to be insulting (not jmabel, but other familiar names), and even to pull back from Wikipedia (apparently, jmabel). I sort of know what you mean, and it seems to me the more time one spends in attending to the 'meta-tasks' of policy and policing, the more likely it is to reach a point where it all seems to be too much hard graft to stay relatively sane. I s'pose such developments from time to time are not unexpected. Maybe it's just my own focus on specific editing tasks, but I think overall there's enough scope around here to avoid getting ground down by the inevitable frustrations which come by.--cjllw | TALK 05:14, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm quitting WP:GA, at least for a while and perhaps permanently, because of all the insults I've taken. I have been very seriously considering quitting Wikipedia. I don't think I will do the latter, but.. I am not 1/100 as keen on it as I was before.
On another note, perhaps related (?) someone else is yapping at Talk:Indigenous peoples. You can argue with them if you want. I say leave them alone in their reality construct, for good or for ill, until & unless unless they start damaging articles.

Ling.Nut, don't worry about stepping back from GA- let others share the headache for a while. Thankfully there are plenty of relatively quiet corners around here where one can contribute (mostly) unmolested by those with agendas and peculiar ideas on civil conduct.
I sincerely hope that you do not move away from contributing here entirely: you are one of the most productive and level-headed editors it's been my pleasure to encounter, and your activities on languages and the wikiprojects Ethnic groups and Endangered Languages have been superb as well as invaluable. Despite the attention-seeking antics from some, IMO at least focus on good editing and applied common sense is still able to trump the distractions of this place, and overall it's still a worthwhile, even fulfilling, pursuit in one's off hours. Leave the argy-bargy to those who revel in it, collaborate with those whose behaviour merits it, and we'll still manage to continue building something of use.
As for the recent posting at talk:Indigenous peoples, I think your advice is very sound. From their edit history it does seem they are angling for a debate. If they want to discuss or alter the article then we'll see, but so long as they seek commentary on their own opinions... well, we've all got better things to do.   • Thanks for the very kind words. I haven't been level-headed lately. In fact, I've been doing a pretty good job of handing people reasons to think I'm not level-headed. I think I bought into the whole "we're a community of respect" thing, and was bitterly disappointed to learn that it is not true (here I disregard vandals, trolls etc., who do not count).  :-)
  • But I am turning the idea over in my mind that maybe I'll just write stuff and stay away from the yapping conversations of people who for some reason have the respect of the "community." Some people are living their own autobiographies (he said, bitterly). So let them.  :-)
